Well written and informative. A must read for anyone who is interested in how the evil slavery trade was finally brought to light as the evil that is was. Wilberforce was a genius, a Christian, a man who used his position in government for good. Highly recommend!

A worthwhile read for any, this book details the life of an individual who is unknown to many. Wm Wilberforce had a profound effect on the world at large by his instrumental role in the abolition movement. While no one can say it has been removed for the earth, it has been removed from the "acceptable" consciences of the earth.

Wilberforce is like Lincoln and Churchill and Reagan a man for the ages , a man to pattern oneself after. He was a true hero in ever important way if all leaders would behave in this manner what a wonderful world we would live in. This book was excellent.

Everyone should read this book about William Wilberforce and his lifetime efforts to stop the slave trade and later to win freedom for slaves throughout the British Empire. His tireless crusade eventually bore fruit is the United States but only through the War between the states.

What an amazing individual. It is incredible to me that William Wilberforce is not a more well known historical figure. Metaxas does a wonderful job of relating the life and works of Wilberforce while paying proper respect to the influence that his deeply christian convictions had on his personal and political goals. Metaxas has a profound style of writing that I believe helps convey the monumental implications of the work that Wilberforce pursued so fervently in life. Overall, a powerful, uplifting read about a new personal hero of mine.

Eric Metaxis does a phenomenal job of bringing William Wilberforce to life. I found this book to be much more than an entertaining and educational read. It was inspiring and uplifting also. It was even a little disquieting, as I contemplated the life that Wilberforce lived for God and then wondered if my life was being lived as it should be. Although I'm done reading this story, I don't think I am done with the reflection it inspired. Great book.

Metaxas gives life to the struggles of William Wilberforce in a way that grabs you and holds you. He has obviously researched his subject well, and interjected his own insightful impressions where appropriate.

I was captivated by Mr. Metaxas writing style but also got a good education of the English gov't and culture of the late 1700s and went on to be inspired by the life and dedication of William Wilburforce. I,'m glad I read it in kindle format so I could easily look up all the words I didn't know the definitive meaning for.

I read Eric Metaxas' "Bonhoeffer" last summer and I absolutely fell in love with the book and the writing style. I also own the movie "Amazing Grace" to which this book is the companion read. Therefore, when I realized that Eric Metaxas penned "Amazing Grace" there was no hesitation to start the book. Once again, I fell in love with the hero, was amazed at how a man could revere and surrender to God so much, and was enchanted by the words of Metaxas as he enumerated the struggles and accomplishments of William Wilberforce and his fearless endeavours to abolish the slave trade.
If you are searching for inspiration, an engaging narrative, or simply want to sit back with a great book, this read is for you.

A WELL WRITTEN HISTORY OF A MOST INTERESTING ENGLISH STATESMAN OF THE LATE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. HIS FIGHT FOR HIGHER PUBLIC MORALS AND TO ABOLISH THE SLAVE TRADE SHOULD BE ENLIGHTENING FOR ALL.
AT TIMES THE DETAIL IS EXCESSIVE, OTHERWISE IT MIGHT BE CONSIDERED A GREAT BOOK. OVERALL, HIGHLY INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN

Eric Metaxas does a wonderful job of telling the story of William Wilberforce and his role in abolishing the slave trade in England. He is an unknown hero who put his moral convictions to test to change the lives of millions. His actions are still being felt today from 18th century England to the civil war thru the civil rights movement. A wonderful and informative read.

This book is not only a masterpiece of authorship, but also one of content. Unfortunately, as usual, the liberal media has considered it as a Christian treatise, and therefore, unworthy of dissemination or discussion. I have never read a better author, or a better historical explanation of the battle for human rights. I predict, for whatever it is worth (probably nothing), that he will be eventually recognized for his extrodinary talent. Hey, out there, are you listening!!!!!

This is a good overview of Wilberforce's life. It does a fine job of bringing in the historical and cultural setting of Wilberforce's work without getting bogged down in unnecessary details. My only criticism would be the highbrow vocabulary which the author sometimes indulges in. But overall well worthwhile.

Eric Metaxas' handling of a legacy such as Wilberforce was impeccable! We certainly owe him a debt of gratitude for this wonderful work! Not only did I complete its reading feeling more educated regarding this historical giant, but also more confident in living out the Christian faith in a way that honors both our Savior and those that have gone before us!

An outstanding book about a man living out his faith when it was not popular. The difficulty we all face when we realize that an accepted way of life we have known since childhood is contrary to what is right, and the courage required to face ourselves. Being willing to submit our lifestyle to the good will of a righteous God who loves us and directs us in a way that is best for us, even when it is contrary to what we want.

Metaxas does a wonderful job of setting Wilberforce in his cultural surroundings. This helps the reader see that much of what is now taken for granted in Western culture regarding the dignity of all human life was anything but taken for granted before Wilberforce and the Claphamites opened their generation's eyes and helped them find their voice.

May we see more men and women like them in our generation!

I thought I knew the story of William Wilberforce.... but there was so much more to his life, than the usual press stories about him. He lived a very examined life, and held himself to a high standard. His story was truly inspiring. If you like historical novels you will enjoy this book.

This book was life-changing. An amazing account of the extraordinary life of an ordinary man who focused his passion and his faith and worked tirelessly towards improving the lives of many. Metaxas' writing is very readable, and he uses rich vocabulary and humour to enliven the text, and writes this biography like a story. Great read.

Actually, I should say my new heroes!

William Wilberforce is an amazing historical figure who rebelled against evil in his culture with unrelenting compassion, grace, and courage based on his faith.

And, Eric Metaxas. Well, he too is a new hero for me. He is intelligent and very funny. His respect for Wilberforce shines through the narative and he includes plenty of facts about Wilberforce that the movie, Amazing Grace, creates a hunger for. He is a gifted author who brought so much to this story that I actually cried when I read the page where Wilberforce dies. Bravo Eric!

What an important story to be told. The books reads like a novel. I feel embarrassed to have known little about Wilberforce and the ending of the slave trade and am so glad I understand more about the endurance that was needed by so many to see its end. It pushes you to ask yourself what has God called of me, what sufferings can I be apart of relieving, how long could I endure... Fantastic book.

Metaxas does a splendid job acquainting us with a true world hero, a man who literally changed the world. With his feet on the Rock and with his God-given abilities, he used his life to make the world a better place for all of us.

A great biography and history of William Wilberforce, who worked valiantly, despite poor health, to end the legal slave trade. The author also reminds us that slavery is still going on today. Another great book by Eric Metaxas.

An awesome book. Thank you Eric for writing this. Taught me many things about life, youth and growing up to make a difference. One of my favorite quotes:
"Policy, Sir is not my principle, and I am not ashamed to say it. There is a principle above everything that is political. And when I reflect on the command that says 'Thou shalt not murder', believing the authority to be divine, how can I dare set up any reasonings of my own against it?"

Excellent writing about and account of Wilberforce's life. Also learned a lot about a time in Great Britain's history I did not know much about. Writing in several places is at a college level with the words and references used by Metaxas.

This is an interesting and informative book. Knowing of Wilberforce's important contributions, I must admit I did have a full understanding of the great difficulties he faced from so many areas. His accomplishments were in much greater number than I knew.
So happy to have read this inspiring book about a truly remarkable man.

Eric Metaxas is an excellent writer. He tells the story in a way that guides the reader along, with the principal characters fleshed out into living characters. The reader finds him/her self in the middle of the story and can feel the emotion of the characters. In this case, the characters become real. The long campaign to end an atrocious evil surely took its' toil of suffering at many levels. It is important to the modern reader to become familiar with this particular trade in slavery, in the last three centuries and to see what happens to the peoples as they find their 'voice'.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The biography gives a very good background of the problem of slavery in a very interesting manner. I especially appreciated the way the author treated the man who was Wilberforce. He was not a superhero, but a man who fought with all that was in him against a heinous practice. Through perseverance and hard work Wilberforce triumphed over the system of slavery that had been accepted and acceptable for ages. I recommend it to anyone who wants to be inspired by greatness.

Loved Metaxas' biography of Bonhoeffer so picked this one up as well. Metaxas doesn't disappoint. Though he got a bit bogged down in the names of all the involved parties in the politics of the abolition of slavery, for the most part he was able to give a meaningful and moving account of a complex and exciting time in history. Love how he manages to humanize his subjects and show the centrality of their faith to all they do.

Eric Metaxas has a gift for weaving abiding truths and Christian exhortation into biographical accounts. Bonhoeffer was my first read, it influenced the way I choose to live my life in these days of waning Christian culture in the US. I knew of Wilberforce and had seen the movie, but I did not know the stirring details of this man's life. I expected the book to provide insights into culture at the time, and Wilberforce' s life as salt on that culture. I was not disappointed.

This book was a real eye opener, to what happened 2oo hundred years ago. We belong to a group called readers and thinkers and we chose this book by Metaxas because we had just finished Bonhofer by him and it was well written. He presents their story line in story form and keeps it interesting. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read and or is interested in history.
