The first three fourths of the book are fairly strong...it's the ending sequence that I didn't care for. Uses similar settings and entities as he does in "The Fold", another one of his books. Just all to similar and I didn't care for them in that book much either. However, the first 3/4 of the story were a good read and highly enjoyable. Just got a little too out there for my taste at the finish.

As a long time mythos fan, I really enjoyed this. What others are calling "slow paced" is, in reality, good character development. A promising author...I don't usually bother to review the new and/or self published because it's not worth my time, but this (I got it on a bargain day) is worth full price. I've recommended it to quite a few like-minded friends. Kudos to the author for original ideas. A nice mix of scifi/steampunk/lovecraftian "horror". Not a gore book. A good read. A must for any Lovecraft library.

I downloaded this book because it popped up in the "customers who bought this item also bought" section of "Ready Player One" and "House of Leaves," which I both enjoyed. Neither of those books are perfect in my mind, and neither is this one, hence the four stars instead of five. I found the first 2/3rds of the book to be un-putdownable. I flew through it, unable to wait to find out what happens next. I even had a few moments where I actually jumped a bit in nervousness while reading. Very creepy and mysterious. I could not figure where the book was leading. Unfortunately, after the first 2/3rds (once we learn a bit more about what the mystery is behind the house) the "bad guy" is pretty obvious and you're just waiting for them to strike and after they do the book becomes less interesting to read (not bad, but not nearly as awesome as before when I couldn't bear to put it down).

All in all, a solid and good read. It led me to read his Ex-heroes books, which (while very different from this one) were a lot of fun as well (especially if you're into zombies and superheroes).
Ex-Communication: A Novel (Ex-Heroes) :: Ex-Isle: A Novel (Ex-Heroes) :: What the Hell Did I Just Read - A Novel of Cosmic Horror :: By Peter Clines - Ex-Patriots: A Novel (3/24/13) :: Ex-Purgatory: A Novel (Ex-Heroes)

I started reading Clines with Ex-Heroes and Ex=Patriots, and let's just say he had me with zombies and super heroes. When I saw 14 for my Kindle I knew I had to give it a chance and it didn't let me down. Since I don't want to give much of anything away, let's just say that he does a great job of creating a cast of characters you want to know more about, and the slow build to the culmination of the story is very satisfying. This is one I'll read again someday.

This is one of my favorite books, can't recommend enough for anyone that's a fan of David Wong, Lovecraft, or any other sci-fi writers. It does not disappoint, even if it starts off a little slow. The ending is worth it!

this is really quite an impressive book. such a simple plot but so much fun! It's really hard to put down because all the chapters are only 4 pages long. that may sound silly but the chapters are less like chapters and more like stopping points in one ongoing story line. Other books like Heart of Darkness could have used such stopping points. Any fan of stephen king and the likes will enjoy this book. it's great to know there are authors like this out there who still have so many more novels to write.

I had no expectations when I opened this, other than I'd finish it. And yet, I really liked it. I love me some Lovecraft and I'm hard to please. At times, the book felt a bit stilted and the characters were a bit underdeveloped, but it was tolerable. The storyline held up, though I wanted more of the tunnels and elevator shafts and lava-run geothermal generators and room to deep space. But I finished it in a day and wanted it to go on a bit longer, so I'd call it a success. The ending was too pat, but I'm not going to dwell on it. I certainly don't feel like it was a waste of time.

One does not currently exist. However, it would be in all likelihood better than Lost, better than The Walking Dead, better than Fringe or the X-files. Why? Because this is the perfect puzzle-box mystery. From the smaller aspects of the terrifying MacGuffin, to the larger aspect of the plot itself, every detail is perfectly calibrated, explainable, sensical, such that there are no evident loose ends or dangling plot threads. Finished this book in one sitting. Enjoy.

Peter Clines is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. The characters are diverse and interesting. The plot supplies suspense without becoming tedious, and the voice of the writing is engaging. Had I read "14" before "The Fold," it would have been given five stars instead of four as the climaxes of both books are very similar.

I am sure those who are Science Fiction fans would enjoy this but it reminded me too much of Lost the TV series, but not nearly as great as Lost was. Won't b reading this anything from this author anytime soon.

Very entertaining book. I enjoyed the unfolding mystery and liked the characters a lot. After reading Clines' Ex-Humans series, I knew he could write great characters and he didn't let me down. Great, captivating story and a suspenseful ending.

This reads like a great classic science fiction book with a good dose of horror thrown in. Very Steven King-like, which is odd because it was because of his blurb, I bought the book. The twists and turns rarely take the expected route. Great read!

One of the most imaginative, entertaining and unique books I've read in years. I'd read that Clines has written some "genre-bending" books (the "EX" series) and this book blends SciFi, horror and suspense. I highly recommend this book and DO NOT read anything about it so you can enjoy the unexpected twists.

One of my favorite reads this year. Clines gives us a captivating Scooby-Doo/Lost/Lovecraftian/Steampunk/SciFi thriller that had me spellbound from beginning to end. Awesome fun and I am looking forward to checking out more of his work.

A great book! i dont want to spoil anything about the story so i will just keep this simple. The apartment that they live in which has many odd things going on is investigated by tenants. At times i almost wanted to skip ahead just to see an end result of something bc i was so eager to find out what was going on. basically if u like what u read for the description of this book or what it says on the back cover then i think u will like this book. maybe a little slow at times but it never slows for long. All the characters were will described and i had feelings for them all like they were real people. im giving it 4 just because it would have to just be out of this world to get 5 stars and not many books achieve that. If u like mysteries with some sci fiction then u should try this one

Moves too slow. Very wordy. I lost interest after 112pages. The beginning had promise but faded all to soon. The characters lack depth and are uninteresting. Seems like a 're-hash of several creepy building stories.

This book was recommended by a friend at work. And I regret nothing. I was surprised more than once when I just didn't see something coming. And though I felt pretty sure I knew who the bad guy was eventually, it was a true pleasure to read the ending. This book was fast paced, had some great characters and I really enjoyed the story.

I enjoyed this book greatly. I can see the comparison of a combination of H.P. Lovecraft and House of Leaves (but wasn't torture like House of Leaves was). It was strange and wonderful. I recommend it.

I bought this book based on a recommendation through another website. I was curious about the way they described this book...one part horror...one part mystery. What I didn't know at the time was it is also one part pure science fiction.

When asked by a patron at a restaurant to describe what the book was about, I honestly said to her, "I'm half-way through this book, and I don't have a clue what's really going on?" That's what I loved about this book!! The fact that it kept me guessing what would happen next until the very end of the book.

If you are looking for a book that will make you keep turning pages until your eyes blur....then this is that book!!!

This was a very interesting story that sucked you in, strapped you down and picked up speed. At first I thought it was going to be about a creepy apartment building, but the further I read, the deeper the plot became. The characters were believable and likeable, and kept the flow of the story going. This book was like finding an onion ring in your fries; a pleasant surprise.

I enjoyed this book immensely and the characters were well developed. I love tales that send the reader on an adventure out of the ordinary world we all live in every day. 14 is suspenseful and has an element of horror to it that doesn't go over the top to gross out or alienate the reader, but you will go on a ride through the supernatural that will leave you wondering if this story could happen in reality.

I absolutely cannot wait for Peter Clines to write the next book in this universe. The Fold was fantastic, this was fantastic, I want another book with mysterious rooms and puzzles to solve. I loved it.

Wowzers. Great story. Great sense of humor. Exciting investigation scenes. Creepy mystery adventure with off the f***ing wall supernatural elements. Sometimes silly but always cool. I wish this author would write more like this and not continue wasting his career with trite and tiresome zombie novels.

Or even a more Modern Day "Fringe" type story with alternate Universes and such.

I had heard that this was 2013's Audible Best Book Choice...so of course I had to read it. I'm not one of those
who can enjoy listening to a book. I have to be able to READ a book. Even though I do most of my reading on
my Kindle E-Reader.

The one aspect of this book that I found most thrilling besides the Mystery of this strange Apartment Building...
was how all the characters were drawn together by their mutual curiosities and their need to find answers.
What became a building of individual tenets with their own lives and interests (and most of them seemed to be
loners of sorts) became a building of people that learned they needed each other and in the end the had become
a real community.

The entire mystery starts by everyone observing strange things in their own apartments...and then wondering why
there were so many rooms like # 14 that were completely padlocked and closed off from all the other apartments.
What was really behind all those locked up doors?

If you like a great Sci-Fi Read...this is the book for you!

I just finished reading this book and it is everything other reviewers said it was.Sometimes the suspens in the last 25% of the book was too much for me, I had to take breaks! It really is fantastic. Mr Clines mastered the story, the flow and the characters beautifully. To think that I wasn't sure if it was worth 8$ and I waited 3 weeks before I bought it. Money well spent.

After reading this, I am beginning to think that Peter can't write a bad book. While the story is completely different this book is in the same vein as John Dies at the End. The story focuses around a bunch of tenants that live in an apartment building that has some odd stuff going on. Peter does a really good job to help you relate to each character while even adding some humor in there for good measure. I really enjoyed this book and I think you will too.

I picked up --14-- as a filler between Clines' "EX" series (can't wait!!) and was really glad I did. There were great, unique characters that were very well developed and a story line that kept me guessing. Even when I thought I knew where the story was going, Clines threw in a twist (or 6) that knocked me back.

While reading --14-- I found myself comparing Clines' writing to Steven King's (at least his good stuff - I mean this as a compliment). I liked the characters and Clines was able to take some very every-day items and scenes and give them a twist and a surprising look and feel.

I would strongly recommend --14--.
