This is wonderful book! It seems a little scary at first, but it really catches your audiences attention! Good story about not judging people by their looks! Like the glow in the dark idea, but it is kind of hard to watch it glow when you need the lights on to read it!

This little book is very memorable. I remember having it read to me many times when I was young. WHAT WAS I SCARED OF? is the not very scary story of a young child who is afraid of a pair of pale green pants with nothing inside them. Now, these pants are animate, intelligent, and the child keeps running into them everywhere he goes. The more often he sees them, them more frightened he becomes. Until he realizes that the pale green pants with nothing inside them are just as afraid of him as he is of them. In his own weird and wonderful way, the incomparable Dr. Seuss is teaching generations of children not to fear that which is different from them.
WHAT WAS I SCARED OF? is short, the perfect length for a bed time story. Written in classic Seuss tongue-tickling fashion, the rhymes flow easily, delighting both the reader and the listener. At first, my 3 year old's eyes grow very wide over the idea of pale green pants with nothing inside them, but soon, as both the child and she realize that there is really nothing to fear, the sweet giggles begin and then great laughter ensues.
This not so spooky tale is perfect for this time of year, as well as the rest of the year, for that matter. WHAT WAS I SCARED OF? is highly recommended for children of all ages who want a "suspenseful" adventure, with peals of laughter at the end.

This story is one of our favorites around Halloween. It is a great read-aloud for kids who love scary stories, yet it is not too scary for most. It doesn't directly reference Halloween, but it is sufficiently spooky.
Note that it is included in the original Sneetches collection, so purchase that book instead. The other stories, like Sneetches, are really good too. Get more bang for your buck.

We have a large collection of Dr. Seuss. Some are better than others but this one is by far our favorite. It's a fun silly story the kids can relate to. Yeah, to make it glow you have to read it in the dark with a flashlight. We've never bothered and it's still plenty enjoyable.

This is my family's favorite Dr. Seuss book! The children like the slightly creepy pictures and the silly place names like Grin-itch, Roover River or the field of Snide. It's just the right degree of scary for young kids, gives them a little thrill without giving them bad dreams. It is fun to read and I love that it sneakily implants in little minds the message that the basis of prejudice is fear. I especially love page 17, where the little yellow bear-like character is in the dark and gloomy snide field and comes face to face with the only thing in his life that has ever really frightened him, the pale green pants. If you look carefully at the snide bushes you will see a swastik symbol and the letters KKK. And isn't that exactly where prejudice is found, in the dark and fearful recesses of the human heart? "And there I was caught in the snide and in that dreadful place those spooky empty pants and I were standing face to face. I yelled for help, I screamed, I shriked, I howled, I yowled, I cried, 'oh save me from those pale green pants with nobody inside them.'" The ending is very sweet and always puts smiles of the faces of my children. You can't go wrong with this one!

Perhaps my top pick for the bedtime stories.
The eyes of a child grow large, their tiny heartbeats quicken and their grip tightens upon your person. Questions arise every other page from their interested brains as to "What do you think is gonna happen next?". Until the last few pages when all is revealed what's green and has been walking in the dark, the cutest of giggles begin.
Upon leaving the childs room, lights go out and the exchange of good nights are given; even thou it is but a humourous book, none-the-less do the tiny folk remind you to leave the closet light on when exiting the room.
I think those are the best critiques in the world.
A Suessage walk in the forest dark.

When my grandchildren were little this was their favorite story. We used to read it by flashlight under the covers. Every time they came to my house they asked for the "story about the pale green pants". I even had to bring it along whenever we all went on vacations together. I will be ordering this glow-in-the-dark version to read to my 2 year old great-granddaughter. Can't wait!

I ordered this book thinking it was a regular size book like the rest of my kids dr seuss books. I was wrong...it was a mini size book. I wasnt happy to pay $6 and change for this. Will donate it... on the hunt for a regular size book.

It's a great book that basically teaches the lesson of life which is as nervous as you are, someone is probably feeling the exact same way. The material in the book stands on its own and would be 5 stars if it wasn't for the gimmick.
But where this book fails is in its execution. The type is not readable in the dark, and the glow in the dark elements are weakly implemented. Since the Glow In The Dark gimmick is why I purchased the book, it's a disappointment.
