Nothing about this book really worked for me. Using djinn as the basis for the story could have been really unique, but the descriptions of them and their abilities felt random. The protagonist is stripped of her powers at the beginning of the book so is forced to rely on her brain, which turns out to be an poor tactical move. She mostly just blunders through the book, occasionally figuring smaller things out while being completely oblivious to the big picture items. She starts accusing people of murder for no other reason than they're in the book and she needs to accuse somebody. She's the heroine but in the end, it felt like she needed to be rescued. And while all of the characters have the beginnings of personalities, they still felt more like caricatures than actual characters. All in all, this was a book that could have been really good, but then just wasn't.

I received Burned as a review copy. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. This book was difficult for me to rate fairly. For my tastes, it was more a two-star read, but I also recognize this rating could possibly prevent other readers-- who may enjoy this book for the very reasons I didn't-- from giving this a fair try. The writing was good, but I found I wasn't enjoying a book about Alyse, a supernatural who wasn't able to use her powers due to binding bracelets. A witty read, although, Alyse was a bit vain and valley-girlish for much of the time. I can see that many reader would enjoy the ride more than I did, hence the upped rating.

Alyse Winters is a djinni. More than that, she’s a highly rated covert operative for a supernatural agency. And she’s pretty impressed with herself, though to be fair, she has the talents to support her ego.
That is, until her mission falls apart around her, and suddenly she’s cut loose with no backup, and her handler seems to have vanished. She finds herself wearing copper cuffs that cut off her magic, and dumped back in her old town of Philadelphia, where too many people hold a grudge against her, villains and former boyfriends included.
To make matters worse, someone is murdering people, and she keeps finding herself at the crime scenes.
I listened to this audio book in one session, on a long drive, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve been meaning to take in another djinni book for a while, and this one didn’t disappoint. While I can’t say I analysed the plot in the way I would when reading, I know it was easy to follow, the narrator did a fantastic job with making all the characters sound distinct, and the dialogue was great. The story hits the ground running and the pace rarely lets up for more than a brief breather, the humour-particularly some of the situations she finds herself in, and some of the wonderfully outrageous minor characters - kept me smiling and the range of characters and their varied mythos all worked really well for me.
This book is a great set-up for the series to come. The mystery of why Alyse finds herself in this predicament isn’t at all resolved in this instalment, but the murders that form the backbone of the plot are wrapped up neatly by the end. I thoroughly look forward to reading (or hearing) subsequent books to find out more about Alyse’s situation, which is deliciously fraught with promised complications and dangers to come.

So totally different from most books I almost literally did a dance when I realized not a witch to be found.
A djinn without her powers, Alyse Winters seeks out her best friends, those she left behind when she became part of the Secret Elite. Sadly, she finds as we all do, what was in the past stays there.
Trying to find out who "burned" her with her own organization, leaving her in human form - no money, credit cards, or comfortable shoes, she takes on a job for the mob, and finds finds herself a suspect in several gruesome murders.
This is definitely not a cozy. This is somewhat dark. There are some light moments, but not as you may expect in one of Ms. Case's books.
Of all of the books written by Ms. Chase, this is my favorite by a long stretch. I look forward to the rest of the series.
There is a slight cliff-hanger, but nothing that will make a scream rattle the ceiling (mine do sometimes).

Would have given a 2.5 if that had been possible. Moves well and the world is an interesting one. Alyse is djinn who works for a spy organizatin. Her powers are blocked and she is dumped in her old home city after a mission gone wrong. Essential it is the set up of the TV series, "Burn Notice" only here with supernaturals. Character development is thin and it is difficult to connect with Alyse who has more tough talk then personally. Plot is simple without much going for it. Pleasent few hours if you don't have anything else to do. Has some potential if the characters and world are fleshed out.

I love urban fantasy, and love reading about all kinds of supernatural beings. Somehow, I had never read a book involving a djinni before. Alyse is a djinni, and her powers end up "suspended" by a pair of magic cuffs. I really liked the characters in this book, especially Alyse. I love a super strong, sassy, and smartass main character. The author did a great job with the world building. There were other supernatural creatures in the story, and they were all described very well also. Alyse finds herself in the middle of a string of strange murders involving some of those creatures. I would describe this book as an urban fantasy mystery story. The narrator of the audiobook was Carly Robbins. She was fabulous as Alyse, and was absolutely perfect with the smartass attitude! I definitely recommend the audiobook version for anyone interested in the story. I really enjoyed this first book of the series, and I hope the next audiobook is released very soon!

Well chalk another one up the the bad ass female that sure is cocky without her powers. As this one goes, it really was surprisingly good. I have read a lot of this genre and can not wait for the next one. Yes, I will read the series just to find out if the power she has harnessed gets back to her.
Starts out with her doing her job for the covert agency she works for and somehow wakes up in Philly with shackles on her wrists. Yes, these are the things that drain her power. So, with no job or bank accounts open, she goes and finds her friends that she used to hang out with. Old lover, sex pot and a quirky guy.
She goes to work for the mob that wants to find a stolen airloom and all sorts of perils happen along the way.
Read the book to find out what happens.

I did enjoy this and I will read the next book, however, there were definitely a few things that annoyed me that were mostly due to credibility or a common sense viewpoint that seemed to escape the purview of literary privilege.
Alyse is (or was) an intelligence/secret agent with loads of experience and at the top of her game. Keeping this in mind she embarks on an investigation of her own incredibly carelessly. For example, she tells everyone, regardless of their potentially hostile and dangerous position, what she is all about. Even with her generous amount of experience she jumps into death defying situations with no backup, little protection and no knowledge or background on what she's about to get into. Displays of a stellar policing? I think not. It sticks out like a sore thumb reducing an otherwise good book edging toward pulp fiction.
Nonetheless, the characters backup characters are good, there's an excellent dose of fun,, and the plot although predictable in spots is good reading.

Look out Rachael Caine, there's a new djinni in town. Seriously though, I couldn't tear myself away from this book. It gives a new spin in the paranormal field, one rarely explored. The writing is extremely good, with well developed and well defined characters and a solid, fast-paced plot that draws you in. It's not the same old thing, rehashed time after time. It's a truly good, original story, and I look forward to the sequel.

This book was not what I was expecting, but it was an interesting read. It is kind of a cross between Burn Notice and magical fae all wrapped in one, even if Alyse is Djinni. Alyse goes from having all this wonderful power of being able to conjure whatever she wants, take on different forms, disappear at will, to having nothing but her human form which she apparently took for granted. Alyse is in big trouble, and trouble seems to be her middle name because it keeps slapping her sideways every time she turns around. Not only does she need to find out who burned her and shut off her powers, but she has to find something for the mob, and prove she isn't a murderer. Definitely, not an easy task when all your magic is gone and you're trying to keep a low profile. If you like books that have intrigue, crimes to solve, supernatural entities, hot guys, and sarcasm this is definitely the book for you.

I love this author, everything she writes is magic. Alyse as a burned agent is a great premise and I love her character along with her friends and allies, old and new. It was a great urban fantasy with plenty of humor and mystery.

Enjoyed reading the first book in this series. Kept me interested from start to finish can't wait to read the second book. Alyssa was a great character and interaction between them kept you on your toes to see what was going to happen next.

A good paranormal badass read. I enjoyed the premise and the result, though expected, it was still worth the travel to get there. A bit long winded at times and a bit formula, but still a fun read. I basically liked the characters and who doesn't like a good conspiracy novel. Against all odd and all of that, a fun read.
