While enjoyable, the book lacks the pulp styling of McFarlane's other books, which makes some of its flaws less easily overlooked. Still, as long as you can look past some of the dialogue and characterizations, the book is enjoyable.

Not your usual urban fantasy witch wizard book. The book had an actual plot..not all sex and violent. I enjoyed the storyline of the main character..he is not op like other books.. I highly recommend it

Really enjoyed in a couldn't put it down sort of way. Some books I've read I have to put down and come back to, because of their predictability or because of tone or some other issue that interferes with the flow of the story / narrative. That is not an issue here.
Immortal Coil (A Dragon Spirit Novel Book 1) :: Firstborn - Legacy Book 1 (Legacy Series) :: A Nate Temple Supernatural Thriller Book 10 (The Temple Chronicles) :: Don't Rush Me (Nora Jacobs Book One) :: Burned (A Magic Bullet Novel Book 1)

I really enjoyed the book. Normally authors will allow their characters to get beat up a lot through out the story and then miraculously pull it together in the end. This book did not have any of that. The main character consistently overcame each situation. This made it believable when he continued to "win the day". I do agree with one poster who said it would have made more sense for the main character to have at least one weapon to fight all the werewovles he kept running into.

I really like his style of writing. This book can stand alone, though at the end I could not help going to see if there was a second in the works. There is humor, action, and just a hint of naughty. Give it a try, you can't go wrong at this price.

A good story over all. I thought the emotional aspects were a little rushed for this short of a book. It would have been better if the author had delved into the respective characters back stories and explained their motives a little. You go the whole book confused as to why the MC is being targeted and when it's revealed it leaves you wanting a better explaination.

A different genre for Jamie MacFarlane and thoroughly enjoyable.
Real quick: Slade (a Wizard) tries to settle in a town near to where he thought his family was from. Unknown to him at the outset is that the town is full of others who practice the occult arts. At the center of the action is a child leading to revelations that reveal more about him than he could have guessed.
A very quick read and one I'd readily recommend.

As a fan of Jamie's sci fi series, I was a little reluctant to try a new genre, but the risk paid off. What a ride. As much fun, if not more, than the Dresden novels, with lots of potential for more fun and mayhem. A murder, a mystery, werewolves, witches, and wizards, along with a troll or two for good measure. Can't wait for the next one!

A flash of red, a beautiful woman and a vision of a wolf. This book had me right from the start! This is a fun book taking a concept you are familiar with in a direction you might not have imagined. The story is set in our time, in our world. But things are not as you have thought. There is magic at work in our world, making it fantastic and a little scary. I look forward to reading more of Jamie's fantasy worlds.

I was quite disappointed. Compared to the Privateer series, this story line is just blah. Not up to Jamie's usual snap. I read in spits and spurts - when I can find time to - so with the Privateer series, I always knew where I left off and looked forward to what happened next. Now, with this Wizard, the main character is after all a wizard, not a witch, series, I find I often need to back up a page or two before I continue on. Wicked Folk is harder to keep going back to. Stay in space Jamie.

I came upon this book because I'm a fan of Mr. McFarlane's "Privateer Tales" series. While I'm waiting for the next installment of THAT series (nudge nudge, Jamie! :D ), I gave this book a try.

I don't always like supernatural books that are set in our present-day, mundane world, because so often, it's handled badly, and we "regular humans" come off looking like complete idiots for not recognizing that there are strange things afoot. ("Look, up in the sky! It's Superman! ...oh, hi, Mr. Kent. Gee whiz, you sure don't look like Superman wearing a pair of glasses at all!")

This book was handled very well in that respect. All the magick-y folks have real jobs, because, hey, even witches gotta eat, and most of them wouldn't even raise your curiosity-meter if you passed them on the street. Nicely done!

Add to that likeable characters, and a smartly moving plot, and I was happily hooked!

I couldn't get past 30%. I was looking for something different. I couldn't understand why the main character Felix just had to settle in a town where he wasn't wanted. I just didn't understand the authors need to make the character stupid enough to stay. Maybe I missed something because I couldn't get past 30%.This book was not good.

It can be difficult to find new series in the urban fantasy genre that don't feel overly familiar. Too often authors appear to be borrowing from the greats, even when its pure coincidence. An intentional nod to their favorite authors, building off existing ideas, neither of these are bad things, unless they aren't accompanied by original story ideas and good writing. I found none of these problems when reading Wizard In A Witchy World. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that McFarlane shares many of the same favorite authors as myself, but the great story telling and writing? That was all their own. Excellent read and a very promising introduction to a new series

If this doesn't show that I bought the book, it is because I used Kindle Unlimited. That having been said, it was a great book. A lot of the three dollar and Kindle Unlimited books could use a good editor. Not so on this one. It was fast paced and a little different. I like Urban Fantasy and this was a good one. Good enough that I hope there is a sequel. The worst thing I could say about it is that I am not a tree hugger and the main character is one.

If you like Urban Fantasy, you will like this. And for the grammar nazi's there is little to complain about.

I usually find it hard to find a good, light story starring witchy types, but this book delivered. I like that it focuses on the action and relationships between characters, rather than use the story as a vehicle for massive torrid sex scenes, but don't mistake that for this book being written for children. It's very much an adult read. The description of witches follows closely what i know of Wicca, with just enough fantasy to make it fun and visually appealing.
Overall, i can't say how much i loved this book. It reminded me pleasantly of Dresden meeting A Modern Witch.

Refreshing to have adults behaving as such, mostly. Felix Slade is definitely a Wiz in a totally Witchy world, poor man. Amusing to watch him stumble through trying not to make too many faux pas along the way.

Really strongly developed characters, including some kick-ass women. Action, mystery, magic and humour, it pretty much has it all.

Definitely a series worth reading if this first book is any indication. Fun finding little Easter eggs too!

A thoroughly enjoyable world of witchy. Highly recommended!

Couldn't make even half way through. The MC is really dumb. So every time he turns around something is attacking him. They all are at least trying to injure him Badly yet he does nothing about it. Maybe he starts kicking but later but I just couldn't get into it.

As a fan of ur an fantasy I am always looking for a good read. Mr McFarlane has given us a riproaring opener to what should be an smazing ride. First person tales told by wizards are pretty standard but the way he mixed other fantasy elements is what made this a must read. Werewolves are wild, trolls are actually sexy and intelligent and a scism between rival witches is just a part of the fun. His magic is well rooted and seems very workable. Just all around a fun book.

Having been a fan of the Jaime McFarlane's Si-FI Privateers series and his ability to create a wonderful world with fun characters, I was surprised to see he created a Magic series. So, I spent yesterday reading it and enjoyed it MUCHO. A fun twist on a young wizard's adventure with witches, werewolves and trolls. He also has humorous problems with the opposite sex. A fun read and the jump into fantasy was a lot of fun and I reccommend this and his other series to youth and adults alike. Enjoy the story. I'm off to download the next in this series.

Ok story. Too many grammatical errors but all in all a fun read. I'd have liked see better explanation of the magical system rather than just the protagonist blurting Latin, but perhaps that's scheduled for future books in the series.

Felix is a wizard who is new in town. Seems like everyone is trying to give him the beat down. Witch covens, werewolves, and trolls are after Felix. Luckily he is a strong wizard who can hold his own. I love that Felix is a complex character, who deep down is a really good guy trying to hold back the evil that comes with his powers. He is looking to find love in the supernatural world. He is also trying to discover more about his past. I would love to read a sequel.

I'm not generally a fan of sorcery and wizardry but my daughter, whose opinion on books I value, recommended this to me. I have read all of Jamie's SF and really liked them so I gave it a whirl. Discovered I really liked his book and the second one but only because his writing style keeps you engaged and he has some very interesting characters. Why not give it a try and see if you like it as well.

I really enjoyed this book. I usually read science fiction and am a big fan of the Privateer series of books also written by Jamie McFarlane. I wasn't sure what to expect with this book being in the fantasy genre but I was pleasantly surprised. I think I will like anything written by Jamie. The fact that it was set in modern times was a big plus for me. The main character is a really decent guy. Really loved the character of the troll! I plan to continue to read this series and am starting the next book now.

I really didn't think I would like this as much as I did... great job Jamie! I have read all of his Privateer based books, and love those... well good thing I was wrong! The books makes compelling characters and has a decent mix of "magic" etc.

Some nice turns, and it is happy ending friendly (in general) which is a requirement for me as I hate tragedy.

Well written good characters main character seemed to be either feminitist modern intellectual man who is lost in his books or written to make him seem more sensitive since he was raised by his coven. The usual parts of evil protagonist and love interest were there and it was a good read.

Too little action, not enough description of characters or scenes, and a very wimpy wizard. I kind of think the author must be British by the amount of crap the main character takes from others. All of that aside, the book was good enough to not count as a waste of time. But I doubt I'll make too much of effort to follow the series.

I read Wizard in a Witchy World and Wicked Folk back-to-back so one review for both books.
Wizard starts out okay and keep me interested. Good background information. Wicked Folk took it up a notch and was the better of the two but you need to start at the beginning obviously. Looking forward to next.

The summary didn't do the book justice. Over all, it was a good read. There are a few things that the book does not explain, but I hope the next book will divulge those mysteries. One of those mysteries is the existence of a dark foreboding power within felix which is hinted at earlier in the book when he's angry, tired and fighting off a coven.

Refreshing take on a foundling wizard tale. There is much more to his life as a wizard than it first appears. Felix, the unwary hero, is not as unassuming or ordinary as he sees himself. A good, fun read with the right mix of villains, adventures, sexy romance and friendships.

I enjoyed the book. The title was enough to catch my attention and while it did take me a couple pages to really get into the book; I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope there is more to come with the story of Felix, Gabrielle and Clarita. Great character development and a good plot line. Several climax points where you would normally see a book end afterwards and still more to the story.

Definitely different than the other books that Jamie has previously released but does not disappoint! Adventure, witches, Wizards, werewolves, trolls all rolled into a great read. Can not wait for the next book in this series and excited to see where this story goes.

The opening portion where the author hadn't picked a perspective was awkward. Other than that it was thoroughly enjoyable. Reminds me a little of Rain Oxford's Elemental series for some reason. Good books to read while waiting for book 2 of this series if you haven't yet.

Looks like Butcher is taking his sweet time with and more Dresden Files - McFarlane has a comparable hit with Felix Slade. A familiar story line but with some good twists to make it his own. The characters get built up pretty quick in this first novel, and when it ends you want to keep following them. Best I have read since Kim Harrison finished the Hollows series. I hope McFarlane has a lot more of this series in the works....

I loved the book. When everything turned out I thought was really good. But why did it not follow up on the dark power he was holding back? He could of used it so many times. That's the only reason I put 4 stars

I came for the Privateer series and read the modern fantasy when I ran out of space-ship tales.

This is an excellent book which should work well for adults as well as teens. Both the violence and sex are off-screen enough to suit all but the pickiest parent.

This series is very comparable to the very widely read Dresden Files but not so close as to be considered a copy. I will read/buy any sequels.

Good, but not great. It is enjoyable and worth the time. It isn't high art or that rich, but not everyone is looking for game of thrones in every book they read. I liked it and I'll be looking for the next one.

This book has everything: aside from the protagonist (who is a wizard), there are witches, werewolves, shifters and even a sexy troll.
The writing and pacing are good and the main character is likable, although a bit of a lightweight. Parts of the story are real page turners and all-in-all it is an entertaining read.

This book kept me up late for a couple of nights trying to finish the darn thing. The only reason I didn't give a higher rating was the writing could have benefited from a stricter editor. As for the story I would compare it with some of Butcher's early work.
