"Melvin did not deal well with disappointment." This is the beginning of Julie Gassman's newest book, You Get What You Get. It tackles the problem of handling disappointment in a clever and straightforward way. Melvin throws a fit whenever he doesn't get what he wants. Apparently this is tolerated at home and he always gets his way, but at school the rule is "You get what you get if you don't throw a fit." Melvin learns to control his behavior at school pretty quickly and when he spills the beans at home, his parents take on a new philosophy as well. The book makes a great lesson and relevant point about self control that any child can understand. With bright illustrations and a to-the-point message, Gassman has created a winning book with a great message.

Melvin does not deal well with disappointment, so he REALLY hates his teacher's rule; " you get what you get and you don't throw a fit." So, even when he gets a pink napkin instead of green, or crayons instead of markers, he doesn't throw a fit.
However, Marvin knows his family doesn't knows the teacher's terrible rule. That night, when it's Marvin's turn to choose the movie, his sister wants a different one, Marvin slips up and tells her " you get what you get and you don't throw a fit." Oops. Now his parents know "THE rule" and throwing fits for a robot book bag because the dinosaur ones are all sold out and having a chocolate chip cookie with less chips than his sister are no longer "fit worthy" that he feels like throwing a fit. Will he accept it or have a throw down?
A great read aloud for the beginning of the school year to introduce classroom rules.

You know when you're watching a pretty good movie, enjoying the story and are really excited to find out the ending... Then the movie ends leaving you with a confused feeling, you look at the person next to you like, "Wait what? That's how it ends?!"
Yeah that's how I felt at the end of this book. It should have explained the reasoning for "you get what you get..."
My 4 year old loves books, and after this one she said "Eh, I didn't really like that one"

My kindergartener has been saying this phrase ever since she started school last Fall. I saw this book in Prime Unlimited and had to check it out to see if it was a coincidence or something her teacher had read and implemented... jury is still out on that, but this book is cute nonetheless! The rule Melvin hates (“you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit”), however, does not work at home on her. Reading “The Highly Sensitive Child” and “How to Talk so Kids Will Listen...” for more suggestions on that front.

Words like "disappointment" make this not a beginning reader book. It might make a good bedtime story book or an early reader book, but definitely consider it a challenge for the young -- a short challenge. The cartoonish variety of illustrations will certainly appeal to children, and the topic is familiar to all. So, if your child has problems throwing fits, this might help bring it under control, though the lesson is really more for the parents than the child. He already knew to follow the rules.

Our daughter loves books and so imagine our delight when she found a book that she loved that actually improved her behavior. Beautifully illustrated, this book gets its message across without being preachy or lame. A must buy for the sometimes moody child.

Perfect read for preschool age children learning that you won’t always get exactly what you want and you have two choices, to accept what you get or throw a fit because you didn’t get what you want. A lesson can be learned of the behavior expected.

I chose this book because I like animals. I gave 5 stars because of the lesson of the story applies to all ages and the illustrations were too cute. I can see the characters moving about telling the story in my mind. I loved every page, thank you
