I too eagerly anticipated reading this book, since I went through an apron-sewing blitz this summer. I was a bit disappointed, however. Although the photos and instructions are helpful (for seamsters more accomplished than myself), the tone of the book is reactionary, with negative statements about working mothers and a lot of nostalgia for the Ozzie and Harriet era. Although Geisel celebrates the rebirth of the domestic arts, she praises the home-as-nest (enclave of traditional domesticity) rather than the house-as-studio (a DIY workshop involving every member in open-ended acts of engagement with economy, history, and culture.) Still, there's some interesting history and some great photos.

This book is full of history, advice and recipes that are so different and wonderfully great, plus there are many aprons. There is a very interesting story to each apron, some great pictures to help explain things. There is the feeling of pure honest love and friendship between the author, the aprons, and the reader. A worth while book for sure.

I received this lovely little book as a gift from a friend who knows my love of aprons and the stories that each one tells.

I loved reading the stories, looking at the glossy beautiful photos, and I even made simple aprons from the patterns that were included.

The book is pretty enough to display, and I do just that in a vintage napkin holder in my kitchen.

Love aprons. Love this book.

This book wasn't what I had expected . . was looking for apron patterns that I could sew and put to a daily practical use. The author wrote about the history of the apron and included sketches of aprons from different time periods. Didn't find any patterns that I cared to sew and wear today.

My copy of "The Apron Book" just arrived. I could hardly wait to sit down with a cup of coffee and get lost in an era that seems so long ago, but so close to heart. Earlier in the year, I attend "The Apron Chronicles" a traveling exhibit of aprons and their stories, told by EllynAnne herself! The exhibit was amazing! Aprons do have a voice and they're heard throughout the pages of "The Apron Book". In "The Apron Book" Geisel has done an extraordinary job bringing the aprons to life. Each apron pictured has a heartwarming story filled with love that only an apron could tell. They come to life and it is as if you're there. The tidbits of info scattered throughout the book from what to do about over salted soup to the perfect pocket placement on an apron are a delight. I can't sew a stitch but I've read every pattern in the book! Thanks EllynAnne

Specifically, apron patterns! She has lovely vintage aprons - we know, because she photographs them for the book! But the only patterns in the book are for very basic - in my opinion DULL - aprons. I would have adored this book if she had made patterns from her vintage aprons.

Having eagerly anticipated EllynAnne Geisel's new book with the highest expectations, I have to say it was even more delightful, beautiful, inspiring and warm-hearted than I had imagined it would be! Considering myself an Apron Muse, and with a collection of beauties that I treasure, EllynAnne has validated these homey icons in a most loving and deserving way. I truly believe that aprons bring the soul back into the kitchen and the life of the family in a way that can't be explained or replicated with all of the sophistication today's hurried world can buy, and pray this book will encourage a resurgence in wearing those sentimental ties that bind!

Every grandmother, mother and daughter should own THE APRON BOOK. EllynAnne Geisel brings us poignant apron memories and takes us on a sentimental journey that reminds of the ties that bind us together. As a contributor to THE APRON BOOK, I waited with great anticipation for it's release. THE APRON BOOK has exceeded my expectations! The photos of vintage aprons, apron memories, and apron patterns truly make the reader want to "Tie One On". All across America people will be searching for their old family aprons or will be looking for new ones after reading this book.

I found "The Apron Book" book to be absolutely charming and fully engaging. Old enough to remember aprons similar to those represented being worn by family and friends, as well as being an inveterate collector of fabric, this work prompts pleasant memories as it nudges me toward my machine.

I received the book yesterday and couldn't put it down. After dinner I curled up on the couch with it and read it cover to cover. If you are expecting this book to be a book full of apron patterns, you will be disapointed. However, if you love vintage textiles you will surely enjoy the pictures and apron stories. And for those with the creativity gene, who needs a pattern anyway? If I had to describe the book in two words, I would say it's nostalgic inspiration. Enjoy!

This is a wonderful book enabling the reader to take a stroll down memory lane. My 85 yr. old mom is an "apron-aholic", I purchased the book for her and am giving it to her for Mother's Day along with an apron I made using the pattern included in the book. The book is a great timeline of the evolution of the apron with fun tidbits and recipes along the way. Such fun!

Love this book!
I am always recommending it to others who love Aprons and apron stories.
It even has a user friendly pattern in the back of the book.
A must have as well as a great gift to send to friends who are apronistas!

Ellyn Anne Geisel's book was a touchstone for me. As we become so automated and electronically connected she brought a truth and many memories for me as I thought of the "aprons" in my life. I do believe we want that "touchstone" as women and men still put on aprons to be creative and serve their aspirations, families and friends.

I saw this advertised in a magazine last year and bought it a part of a Christmas gift for my mother this year. A few other women also commented on it after she opened it. She has always worn aprons since I can remember and thought she would enjoy this book. She does not sew anymore, but I know she will enjoy the stories and pictures. I flipped through it before I wrapped it for her and it looked like a nice book.

I thought this was such a great little book, full of heart-warming stories revolving around memories of aprons and the loved ones who wore them. There were a couple nice recipes and a bonus apron pattern adhered to the inside back cover. This book makes you want to throw on an apron and cook a great big meal for your family!

What a beautiful book! It brings back so many memories of my grandmother wearing fancy aprons on Christmas Eve, and of my mom wearing a funky 70's apron to bake cookies in! Great for coffee tables, or for anyone who enjoys collecting old linens, nostalgia, or even sewing. It has inspired me to sew beautiful aprons, and do my part to bring them back in style!
