Oh boy what a mess. I started reading and it was like coming home. I connected immediatedly with the characters. I laughed, I cried and I was angry at some point. I like the pace of the book. The writing is excellent, the story is great and the book is totally worth reading it. There's love, drama, twists and turns that kept me at the edge of my seat.
Then There Was You is a fantastic 5 star read, a beautiful story - and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book, My Way Back To You.

10**********Read!! Let me start by saying, this is a Claire Contreras book, I was pretty confident I was going to love it!! It's been awhile since Claire has written and I was begging for some new material from her!!Then There Was You did not disappoint in any way shape or form!!! There is only 1 other book that has gripped me so desperately, made me giddy and happy, only to rip my heart out... I loved every second of it! TTWY was a powerful, tension filled love story! Rowan is a beautiful man, kind, funny, rich, and the oldest son, set to take over the family business, with rules, of course! Tessa is a beautiful spirit, and a designer, who is looking to get out of her hometown for good! Rowan has to stay, Tessa has to leave...How can they ever work?!?! I loved Tessa's desire to be who she is, not who some man wants her to be, I loved how kind Rowan is when it comes to Tessa and her dreams, but I hated him for the choices he makes!!! This story gave me every single emotion I look for in a book, I laughed, I was angry, I felt my heart breaking, my chest ached, and my tears fell freely. So much angst, tension, and drama, I cannot imagine what book 2 will bring, but I know I am more than ready for it. What a hell of a return Claire!!!!!!

I absolutely adored this book, such an emotional ride full of family drama, heartbreak and eye opening moments. The first book in this duet was perfectly done and honestly had me smiling while I was reading. The family fabrics empire sets the perfect backdrop for this story in beautiful upstate New York.

Rowan Hawthorn has had it drilled into him his whole life that he doesn’t bleed, he is strong and must show no weakness. Love is not a goal attained in life, the most important thing is family image and success in business. Yet Tessa Monte is the one thing in his life that makes him pause and wonder for a moment if what he believes about love is actually true.

Tessa Monte is a strong, powerful woman who is extremely talented and goes after what she wants. The problem is the man she wants, has always wanted, does not believe in love or a happily ever after. No matter what has happened in their past, fate keeps bringing Rowan and Tessa together, causing these once friends turned enemies into something neither one of them can deny.

Family issues, misplaced blame and unstoppable love makes this book a page turning romance I didn’t want to put down. 5 Stars!

4 “Back Again” Stars

Oh man. My stomach is in knots. This angsty back and forth love/not love story has me on pins and needles. I need book two like yesterday.

Then There Was You is the first book in the Second Chances duet. It follows Rowan and Tessa. High school sweethearts whose relationship fell apart when they went to college, these two fight. A lot. Now Tessa is back in her home town temporarily and is constantly thrust back into Rowan’s path. Determined to forget him, she does her best to ignore him and the pull that is constantly between them. But best intentions aside, neither can deny their attraction. But life is not going any better for these two than it did all those years ago. And it seems the timing may never be right.

Right from the start I was curious. At first I had a hard time figuring out the connection and what exactly was going one between these two. But once the story picked up, the angst was ever present and IT HURT. I was frustrated with both of them at times and that ending about did me in. But man was I invested. I am so glad the next book is going to be released soon because I have got to know how this mess is going to play out.

Holy -Smokes !!!

First let me start out by saying thank you ! I was in the worst book funk , I kept starting and then stopping different novels before TTWY . There wasn't anything that could hold my attention.

Then I started TTWY and oh my word , complete and utter rapture! This novel has me obsessed !

Tessa has come back to town to tie up some loose ends , and her first run in is with Rowan . The sparks fly immediately ... may I also say the author does such a beautiful job of helping you to experience every emotion her characters are feeling.
There are plans put into place with both of them . Rowan and Tessa have both been living separate lives and planning futures for themselves. Futures that don't involve the other person. But all that goes to hell in a hand-basket when Rowan decides to ask Tessa to be his secretary while she's in town for a couple weeks.

Outside forces are determined to keep them from working their issues out. But with raw energy swirling and undeniable love what will happen ?

A billion stars !! I'm stuck on this book am impatiently/ patiently waiting for part 2 ! ;)

Oh Claire, my heart needs the next book!!

Tessa and Rowan grew up together. They were best friends, dated, went their separate ways, and are now briefly reconnected. So much happens during the reconnection that will have your heart tripping over itself.

I loved how this was written. There are so many feelings involved. The chapters of the past add a lot to the emotional aspect and allow you to see and feel the feelings Rowan and Tessa have for each other but are both too jaded from their upbringings to realize and understand.

“She had the kind of magic that turned me inside out. The kind that would make me believe that maybe I did bleed.”

I also enjoyed the supporting characters a lot. The support and friendships and love are heartwarming.

Tessa and Rowan’s story is touching, heartbreaking, selfless, and left me in a mess of emotions. I can’t wait to see what Claire has in store for us with the next part.

When you love an author it’s always a torturous wait between releases. What I love about Claire’s work is that when the wait is finally over the book is always well worth it. Tessa returns home to settle her family’s affairs and runs into the one person she hoped not to- Rowan. Tessa and Rowan’s lives have always been intertwined. They were life long friends-turned into something more-ended when they went their separate ways to college. Though they haven’t spoken in years, the minute they’re back in each other’s presence the sparks fly. Their second chance, much like their first, has an expiration date. Both go into it with eyes wide open. But, with family politics weighing him down, Rowan must make a heart-breaking decision. This book left me a big ole mess. I had to hide from my family, so I could cry in peace. Even though I had a sense of where it was going, the emotions that played out between them hit me hard. I don’t think I’ve ever been more thankful that a duet is being released weeks apart. Even though I’m sure it won’t be any easier on my heart I cannot wait to see how their story will end.

Then There Was You by Claire Contreras is the first book in the Second Chances Duet. I absolutely love her writing and could not wait for a new book from her-and let me tell you this book was worth the wait. It is packed with wide-ranging emotions and twists and turns you don’t see coming. And that ending!!! OMGGGG I need to know what happens. Like right now.

Tessa and Rowan grew up with each other. They were friends and eventually it led to more. Decisions were made that had them going in two different directions. Now years later they are in the same town at the same time. But Tessa isn’t having any warm fuzzy feelings toward Rowan and wants to do what she has to do and get back to her life. Well...that isn’t the case and hearts get broken and lives get ruined.

I LOVED this story. I seriously devoured it in one day and am now sitting here biting my nails waiting for the conclusion. Rowan and Tessa...my heart broke for them and for they each had to go through. Ms. Contreras sucked me into this story and I didn’t want to come out. I cannot wait to read the next book!

Claire Contreras is one of those authors that delves deep into character development and their emotions and this book was no different. I loved how this was kind of like a second chance romance with a side of anxiety about what was going to happen next.

Rowan & Tessa have a very deep relationship. It isn't always good, but whatever they both feel, they feel it deeply for one another. I loved seeing their relationship in past and present form. It showed what happened to make these two people (who are clearly made for each other) so distant and angry and sad and heartbroken.

The passion that Rowan & Tessa have for each other is off the charts hot and the fact that they can read each other so well shows how in tune they are with one another. I loved that I didn't know what was going to happen right away. When a book keeps me wondering and guessing and anxious about what is to come, then I know that this is one heck of a good read. Clarie really did a number on my emotions and on the characters emotions. That ending...oh my gosh, I am so anxious for the next book!!

Oh! My! Goodness!! This story is so much more than a second chance romance. I cried on my husband’s shoulder when the book was over because I wasn’t ready for it. I wanted it to keep going and going and to keep the glimpse into their world!

Tessa is broken by family losses and financial strains she doesn’t truly understand. Rowan is broken by parents who didn’t know how to love him - leaving him to think love was a farce. Not knowing what to do with their hearts, they think they can hook up and be happy after all they tried their hand at “more” in high school, but ended before they ever really started. Years later, their passion and electricity is even stronger, but is it strong enough?

I so enjoyed this book and can’t wait for more of this story! Rowan is a swoon-worthy guy even if he doubts it. Tessa is stronger than she’ll ever believe. Samson is a great brother for Rowan and friend for Tessa. And Camryn is just a biatch who I wish didn’t exist!

Of course, there is a rival – Camryn. She’s willing to do anything to wear the crown. Not gonna lie – not since Leah (Dirty Red) have a I wanted to punch a character in the face this bad. The part of the story told in flashbacks make sense so that you understand why Tessa is so angry at Rowan. These two cannot stay away from each other despite the reasoning for them being apart are still very much in evidence.

As a born romantic, I’d like to say that everything is sunshine and rainbows. It isn’t. Claire Contreras gives us a meaty love story here. One that quickly grabbed my attention. Truth be told, I pulled an all nighter and have no regrets. The mix of angst and sex is just about perfect. Can these two move past the mess made by their parents? Will they be able to put aside the fear each of them feels for different reasons? Nope! Of course, I’m not telling you.

Once again, you got me Claire Contreras. Right here! In the heart. I bow my head to you. Thanks for giving us something fresh and oh so good.

A complicated, complex angsty love story that was burning with so much fervent passion, intensity, and feelings. Claire Contreras hooks readers right from the beginning as she presented characters that were linked by a past. Tessa and Rowan have known each other all their lives but as adults, their relationship took a different turn. Emotions of anger, hate, lust and possibly love begins to run rampant. And so with Contreras’ vivid and heartfelt emotional prose, she brought life to Tessa and Rowan. She allowed readers to see that there are two sides of the story. And that is all I have to say with the plot line since I don’t want to spoil as to why this book was a compulsive addictive read. But what I will say, Claire made us bleed for these characters as their past came colliding in the present. In this slow burn angsty romance, Contreras made our hearts yearn for Tessa and Rowan in a way that has begging for the next book.

Oh, what a tale Ms. Contreras tells! First off, I love the cover for this book! I've read other books by Ms. Contreras in the past, but this story grabbed me by the throat and would NOT let go. It is a powerful tale of the damage failed marriages cause the children involved, regardless of age and how these two characters grew up together not believing in love. I have to say that I totally LOVE a book that is so good it can tear my heart out and leave it bleeding in the dust, but then turn around and put it back together in a way that makes it better for the pain. This is a two book series, but the second book will be available in just a few days. You really don't want to miss this one. It has all the feels you can handle and then some.

Tessa and Rowan have been in love with each other since high school but both of them don't believe in love due to their upbringing; especially Rowan. He was raised in a loveless marriage. Tessa's parents went through a horrific divorce when she was in college that scarred her as well.

When she comes back to town to sell the family home after being away for 4 years, she sees Rowan again. He stirs up old feelings that she thought she locked away.

Being the oldest child, Rowan has to marry in order to inherit the company. Even though it's a marriage on paper only, Tessa is destroyed that he's giving up his future. When she tells him that she loves him and will give up her future in Paris designing, he turns her down and walks away.

Oh my flipping goodness!! From beginning to end my beating heart was working overtime! Tessa and Rowan...I’m angry, I’m sad, I’m frustrated, I’m devastated and yet I’m hopeful....and the author did it again! I’m in need of book 2 because that ending is hide under the covers reaction. Luckily we don’t have to wait too long! Once you’ve started this book you’ll be so immersed in the characters and storyline you won’t be able to stop. All I kept thinking is Life. Is. Not. Fair. Tessa and Rowan have so much history and yet sometimes it’s not enough. Love and timing do go together and for so many reasons it’s like it’s always working against them. Then There Was You has pushed my emotional threshold to its max....

I’ll be in the corner working out my issues hoping, praying and wishing Tessa and Rowan come back fighting.....

Oh my god, Oh my god................. It's not about second chancer. This book clearly teach us a lesson. When it's the real thing, when is it True Love, somethings will stand in our way, but at the end that LOVE will fight and win it all.

I couldn't get enough of this book and I will read it again, again and again.

Ahhh...this book wrecked me! I need the conclusion like now!

Then There Was You has me all kinds of twisted. I felt every emotion. I’m shocked, angry, saddened, frustrated...you name it, I’m feeling it!

You have this couple who just can’t seem to get past their insecurities and hang ups about love and marriage. They both had a seemingly perfect up bringing, but what goes on behind doors isn’t always as it seems. They both have families that tore their lives apart and they aren’t sure they can overcome or change their paths...

Will they take a chance or will it all be ruined? I NEED the next book! I’m dying to know all the things!

Claire Contreras always surprises me with her books, and this book is not the exception. I usually read the whole series to make my review. I know her stories always are very emotional, the angst of this story it makes you feel helpless and crazy sometimes, but is worth it.!!
The chemistry between Tessa and Rowan is so special , both of them are pessimistic about love when in reality they are so in love.
I’m so curious about the next book, I can’t wait to read the conclusion of this beautiful love story.!!!

3.5 stars ... Okay so honestly I’m sitting here like wtf! The first half actually was seriously so boring and honestly I wanted to stop reading the book a few times! Then I went to the reviews and there were so many 5 star reviews and wow reviews that I was like okay FINEEEE I’ll keep reading. Seriously the last hour of the book I was beyond hooked and could not keep my emotions in check. I totally called the cliff hanger though like from a freaking mile away. I’m about to start the second book and I swear if the first half is boring AF I’m going to be so mad bc they wasted most of this book with a bunch of crap that I could have done without.

This book!! Ahhh, it’s perfection. God, did I miss Claire’s writing. Claire’s writing is so damn good. Then There was You is phenomenal. It’s emotional and angsty and so well written, with characters that are so well developed and fantastic. This one will get you with the feels. All of them. It’s a roller-coaster of a ride- one you will love and not want to get off. You will not be able to put this book down and when you are done, you will be counting down the days until book 2.

Claire proves once again that her talent is above the rest.

It's wonderful seeing the latest release from Claire Contreras. There is a beauty in her writing that I have been waiting for. Then There Was You came along at just the right time. This duet is perfectly crafted. A strong story line filled with all the perfect mixture heartbreak, angst and undeniable passion.

I immediately fell in love with Tessa and Rowan. They are strong characters who have been challenged in life with making tough decisions. The beauty in overcoming their obstacles makes the journey all worth it.

I look forward to the My Way Back to You.

Amazing! I fell in love almost immediately.
This story is refreshing. I laughed. I cried. I understood the struggles and decisions each one of them had to make. The bond and connection between these two is one that cannot be hidden. It's obvious they belong to each other. My heart broke for Tessa. My heart broke for Rowan...The hardest choices are the ones we make when we think it's the only one.

Rowan is a swooned worthy-fall head over heels in love with kind of man. He is strong, tough and determined BUT also sweet,
attentive, romantically possessive and selfless.

The thing is, Tessa and Rowan did talk, there was no misunderstanding about their relationship. There was no angst as such, except they were both just scared of their feelings, of falling in love, marriage, the whole nine yards. One of them deliberately jumped over a cliff. That’s alright though. We can move on, nothing to cry over here folks.

I give this 4.5 stars (which the store doesn’t have), because this story grabs me and never let go till I got to the end. Such an angsty read also. I wanted to bang the head of the H and h together. Stupid fools.....

Holy rollercoaster. This book has been on my TBR for awhile and I'm so glad I decided to finally read it. Claire has written a beautiful story that I, no doubt, cried reading. It's rare for me to like all the characters in a book but I enjoyed all of them. I love the friendship between Sam and Tessa. But the relationship between Rowan and Tessa gave me anxiety! I can't tell you how many times I wanted to punch Rowan. But I still adore him. I cannot believe that is how it ended! So much angst. Love this book so much and will definitely read this over and over.

Really Loving the chemistry between Rowan and Tess. High school sweethearts (yet unofficially out in the open) both know there is really something deeper going on then what either of them want to admit, but after going separate ways to college they happen to find their ways back home and to each other for different life altering reasons. He has to run the family business and she has to close up loose ends. These two can have it all but the other does not fit into the equation. This first book leaves off with a heart shattering cliffhanger that I can’t wait to dive straight into.

I really like this second chance love story of Tessa and Rowan. The character development was done in the past and current chapters. These two belong together that is evident from the beginning. She is afraid of getting hurt again and he just doesn't think he has it in him love anyone. There are a lot of family dynamics going on to influence each of them. This book includes angst, drama, and tears. This book ends with a cliffhanger (not my favorite) luckily the next book will be released soon. I'll be waiting on pins and needles waiting for it.

This was one of those second-chance stories that has you rooting for the characters to get hit their crap together and realize they were meant to be together. Tessa and Rowan have a lot of personal issues that prevent them from fully being together. Neither one has a model family, although Tessa is close with her siblings. My only issue is that I wish this wasn’t another book where the hero didn’t believe in love because of his parents. I’m eagerly anticipating the second book in the series so I can find out what happens next.

These characters are a beautiful mess.. if you are looking for an easy read this is not it this book has all the angst and I swear my heart was going to come out of my mouth or would drop so low I can’t even.. Thus book sucked me in and I didn’t even notice .. so many lows and highs and oh so much drama and that ending omg I can’t even believe I’m writing this crappy review I should be reading book 2.. can two people that don’t believe in Love fall in love? A must read that is highly addictive

Claire is back baby!!! I’ve missed Claire’s writing but she’s back and with a bang. Love, love, loved this book.

This book has everything I love and more. Second chance love, friends to lovers, angst galore and hotness!!!

Rowan and Tessa were perfect together and I’m dying for more of them in book two. Their relationship is like a rollercoaster ride that you don’t want to get off.
That ending was so good and so unexpected.

Claire fans will love this book.

Ok but first I have to say that I really got invested toward the end. I mean the no-yes-no pull with Rowan and Tess was driving me crazy then we get to the bitch “girlfriend” and finally some action! And then .... that.... i mean.....jeez woman!

I struggled a bit at the beginning and was a bit confused but quickly got pulled into their history and story.

I NEED THE NEXT ONE NOW!

This was a long awaited new release from Claire. It had all the feels and angst. I enjoyed that the story was told from the past and present. I could feel the chemistry between Tessa and Rowan, I was hoping for some more past to find out exactly what happened between them back then but I'm sure in book 2 it will answer these questions. I really loved Tessa and how you could see her growth from past to present and I'm excited to read how she handles what comes next for her

First I have to say OMG I absolutely LOVED Tessa and Rowan.. I fell head first in love with this story and Loved every freaking minute of it!!! I so need the next book like RIGHT NOW!!!

One thing about this author I just love are her second chance romances, I am always blown away and fall in love with them!

I loved everything about this book from beginning to end. This one has it all!!! LOVED HARD
