Well written and laid out. Best source I have found to get the body on the right track and be healthy. Excellent choice replacing many of the other books I have purchased in the past. I highly recommend this book.

Dr. Mullin in his book “The Gut Balance Revolution “illustrates a very unique and practical approach for combating the obesity epidemic. This book is informative with a lot of case studies and research experiments to support his theory. The daily menu program along with the recipes he has listed are a real help to jump start this diet program. A book that can be easily understood by professionals as well as by the lay man.

Great book overall. I would give this 5 stars except that Dr. Mullin recommends eggs as a major supplement to the diet. My research shows time and again that egg's have negative effects on the gut, the body. See links to non-bias studies below...

Excellent book, informative and right on the cutting edge of medical research today. The gut drives our immune system and what we eat really changes the population "down there".... choose wisely. This gives you all the information you need to change your life for the better....

In 1910 Dr. Mechnikov from the Pasteur Institute and winner of a 1908 Noel Prize proposed that alterations in the gut microbiome were associated with certain diseases, and by restoring the gut microbiome one could restore health. In 2011 Dr. Francis Collins, the leader of the Human Genome Project, noted that the Human Microbiome Project was the future of medicine.

In June 2015 Dr. Gerard Mullin from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine wrote The Gut Balance Revolution, a book integrating evidence-based scientific information on the gut microbiome with a straightforward, three-phase diet and lifestyle plan for change. He tells a compelling story for patients and clinicians alike. If you are reading this review you should consider reading this book.

Very excited about this book--just the recipes alone blew me away! Got all my excess weight off before getting the book, but the trick is KEEPING it off. And this makes so much sense. Gotta listen to a man who lost 120 lbs & kept it off, while getting healthy & enjoying life.

Finally everything in one place! There are bits and pieces of this information in articles and various posts but this book puts it all together, and more, in a way that everyone can use. Food, recipes, exercise - this isn't just for weight management - it is for good health. I need another copy as this one has plenty of highlights! Dr. Muliin is a true doctor/nutritionist! Highly recommend the book - to live by and reference.

I intend to use the principles and great tips provided in Dr. Mullin's The Gut Balance Revolution to enhance the weight loss achieved by patients at the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center. I highly recommend the book to anyone concerned about their health and their weight. (Dr. Lawrence J. Boring. An accumulation of very lengthy sterile discussions in sensational style, trying to keep the pertinent information away from the reader while selling his method like a magic pill. After 150 pages without learning anything I finally gave up. Huge waste of time.
My advice: Save time, money and learn all you need to know by purchasing "gut" by Giulia Enders, a fantastically easy to read, right to the point, funny book so dense in information, yet reading like a best seller novel.

Dr. Mullins new book provides the reader with a clear understanding of the role microbes in our gut influence our health and weight.
We are made of trillions of cells, yet the number of bacteria that live in our gut is 10 times that number. How we eat has a profound effect on how we feed this internal milieu. The knowledge and research that went into this groundbreaking book is to applauded. I'm suggesting this book to all my patients, who not only want to lose weight, but desire a higher level of health.

Either the author or the store should make clear that this is the same book as his previous, The Good Gut Diet. Only tiny print on the copyright page acknowledges this, which seems less than forthcoming on the author's or publisher's part. In my experience, most books that are re-released under a different title indicate "previously published as" in a more prominent place. Either way, save your money if you own TGGD already.

Dr. Mullins offered me a whole new window into restoring my health, and sustaining it. I followed Phase 1, appreciating the book's detail about why it works. I'm 45 years old and had enjoyed good health with little effort for most of my life. My usual tricks for feeling good and slimming down weren't working and I refused to believe it was age and that my best years were over. I realized I had "leaky gut", adrenal fatigue and was experiencing food sensitivities (related to leaky gut). My MD said all my labs looked fine and that I was good, but I felt far from ok. A Naturopathic Doctor did food allergy testing, my research told me it was leaky gut, but she didn't know what to do about it.

There is so much conflicting information and it was so frustrating. I remember thinking, "somebody that knows what they are talking about, please tell me what to do and I'll do it!" I spent so much free time listening to health and wellness podcasts, searching for answers, trying sooo many things.

I heard Dr. Millins in an interview and everything he was saying made sense and made me curious to try it out for myself. The results were noticeable within the first week.

Please note, the first few days are tough but necessary, as those bad organisms begin to be starved of the items that had created their little party, at our expense. I don't believe you can get the results without the die off, no matter how healthy you think you've been eating. I encourage others to research Die Off to stay as comfortable as possible during those critical first few days of resetting your gut microbiome or you'll skip that important, and very individual process.

I felt increased energy, decreased inflammation and more like myself within the first ten days. After so much searching for answers on how to feel good again, this book and Dr. Mullin's expertise was an answered prayer. It works, not just addressing symptoms but resolving root problems. I can't wait for more people to understand the role of gut health and how to get there. So many people still think it's just about taking a probiotic. For me, the path to health is here in this book.

I started the process he recommends in the book on Oct. 24 and am now more than 3 months in. The results are so widespread from clearer thinking, improved memory, less cravings, more stable moods, my skin and hair are healthier and obviously the weight loss. I almost want to cry with joy every time I put on my skinny jeans, which for more than a year I had wondered if I'd ever wear them again. I'm not all hunched over like a little elderly person when I get out of the bed in the morning. My joints don't creak when I go down the stairs. So many little and big ailments I attributed to aging weren't aging but instead an overloaded digestion system that couldn't take anymore and needed my help and attention.

So glad we are learning about gut health and it's pivotal role in overall health and deeply appreciative for this book to spell it all out and make it actionable. Best wishes to you and I hope this book and it's process has the same real and sustainable effects for you.

Maybe the author thinks his readers are dolts or will attempt to speed read thru this book, or he feels he has to justify the price with more pages, but it is just bloody repetitive! I would have paid the same amount for a book 1/3 the length (and do we need "more" recipes??) with the information and scientific bases for his pronouncements and recommendations presented once. (And if the reader still doesn't understand, have footnotes that link to online explanations). Got so bored by chapter 3, couldn't go on!

This book has a lot of information. Like another reviewer, I believe it was quite lengthy and could have been summarized more in the beginning chapters. (I kept thinking - get to the point.) If you are not someone who knows a lot about your gut and how foods interact with your body, read this. I would also recommend learning about the Paleo diet. They are very similar, however Dr. Mullin's removes FODMAP's. Also, in phase 2 he allows foods that you can not eat on the Paleo diet. This surprised me. As someone who suffers from Ulcerative Colitis I know my body can not process beans, yet they are listed as a superfood in Phase 2. I tried adding quinoa to my diet last year after reading all of the benefits, but my body also resisted it and I became very ill. In short, listen to your body. This book is a great starting point and you might have to tweak some things.

It is not often that you find the titles ‘gastroenterologist’ and ‘nutritionist’ referencing the same person. Dr. Gerry Mullin has continued to author books on the cutting edge of integrative and functional medicine; presenting this information in a way that everyone can learn and benefit. This is a must read for health care providers, and anyone who has struggled through countless diets. For the last ten years I have worked with patients, day in and day out, with their weight loss goals. Weight loss has never been about ‘calories in: calories out.’ Think about this - it has become the norm in our culture for people to continuously try extreme dieting. It has become 'okay' to starve yourself in the pursuit of a lithe frame. This is why this book is so important to the health of our nation. The food that you eat affects your microbiome and this in turn, affects your ability to lose and gain weight.

Dr. Mullin’s new book, The Gut Balance Revolution, should be seen as a beacon of hope to anyone who is struggling with losing weight. This book will teach you how to eat to rebalance your gut and your metabolism. THIS is how you lose weight and keep it off for good!

In The Gut Balance Revolution, author and academic gastroenterologist Dr. Gerard E. Mullin “suggests” that the bugs in your digestive tract have a much greater impact on your weight than how many calories you consume. He makes more than 50 references to things that research “suggests” which is appropriate since little of the research he references is conclusive in any meaningful, human context. He “suggests” that this is proven by the fact that America’s obesity epidemic continues apace even as “the daily caloric consumption of Americans fell by 74 calories between 2003 and 2010”. He neglects to mention that the average American was still eating hundreds more calories than they are burning up every single day.

I would suggest that either Dr. Mullin is very poorly informed or he is willing to torture the truth to sell a few books. In any event, his misdirection is of little practical consequence as—if you follow his prescription—you will end up on the same lower calorie, higher fruits and vegetable, lower meat diet that everyone else prescribes and will probably have a smaller waist and healthier microbiome to show for it. I do wish he had not clouded the truth with a bunch of highly speculative microbiome mumbo jumbo which, at best, will turn out to contribute marginally to the obesity discussion.

My advice is simply to skip this book and follow Marion Nestle’s concise advice: “eat less, move more, eat lots of fruits, vegetables, and grains, and don't eat too much junk food.” Better yet, invest your time and money in Dr. Nestle’s What to Eat.

There is really no surprise here that Dr. Gerry Mullin has produced another spectacular, vital, and timely, work. Information on the importance and influence of the GI microbiota on systemic health, and body composition, has been emerging and breakneck speed. Dr. Mullin has been able to take all of the complicated and confusing information and put it into terms and concepts that the non-medical profession, and medical professional, alike can understand and utilize to improve their health. The book is full of science and evidence on the concepts presented, but yet maintains an easy-to-read style which delivers actionable steps that the reader can take immediately, and in the longer term, to lose weight and achieve a greater level of health. The recipes are fantastic and helpful. I have begun recommending this book to my patients who have weight-loss resistance and the feedback from them has been nothing but positive. To someone who is a very respected colleague, I would like to commend and congratulate Dr. Mullin on yet another vital contribution to the dialogue on proper nutrition, the achievement of optimal body composition, and the importance of the microbiome in health.

Reading this book will change your outlook on what your body needs to become or to stay healthy. I atteneded a 6 week class of 12 retired-age ladies who followed the program outlined in the book. We all had good outcomes that improved our health and got us started on a healthier way to eat. I had many health issues I wanted to address and also wanted to lose a few pounds. I found my blood pressure decreased, my irritible bowel problem was giving me less upsets and I generally had more energy. I thought I knew the right way to eat but I received an education of so much more. Although this book does get medically technical at times, there is a wealth of information about the body and what we need to eliminate from and add to our food choices. Good recipes are supplied also. My doctor was so interested in my results that she is reading this book!

Dr. Mullin's book The Gut Balance Revolution is masterfully written -- putting the latest gastrointestinal science into motion, into clarity, and into the eyes of a reading public that has been grossly overexposed to "miraculous diets, cures, pills, potions, and super-foods". Dr. Mullin talks honestly and accurately about the slimy stinky bacterial soup within our guts that is essential to our bodily function, is critical to our health, and makes us the men and women that we are. Properly feeding, cultivating, growing, nurturing, and farming these mostly bacterial gardens is the theme to which Mullin keeps returning -- with good reason. This book beautifully blends emerging hard science into a compelling and understandable narrative. It is very well documented for those who chose to go further. This topic is one of the explosive areas in biomedical research that will cause a sea-change in our perspective over the next decade or more; it has already fueled a massive change in our understanding of the human condition. The book is a must-read for those who care about their bodies.
