This is a cookbook from Vivian Howard. She left the chef life in the east to return to her North Carolina life where she is rediscovering staple southern foods and running a few restaurants and raising twins with her husband. She is full of energy!

Wonderful book! I refer to this as a well written book, not just a cookbook with great layout and recipes, but also for the story it tells. Living in Downeast NC most of my life, Chef's ability to entwine the fabric of life of our region with her story and the story of the local farming and fisheries industry makes this a great read and tool to have in your kitchen. Highly recommend!

I was introduced to Ms Howard via her television show the Chef and the Farmer. I am a fan and hope to get to the restaurant some day. The cook book is a fun extension of learning about Southern Cooking (North Carolina) one ingredient at a time! Now while my family is from the West (Mississippi) I can relate to many ingredients. I can enjoy exploring the rest. Ms Howard has presented both cook book and sociological study of the region she once again calls home. You can never really escape family.

I loved the book and Vivian ' s stories. I have watched every episode of her TV show. She is a real inspiration to working women everywhere. She has inspired me to try foods and new recipes. I'm planning to go to North Carolina, just to eat at her restaurant.

I enjoyed the history and recipes I was Lucky enough to have heard her speak at a special"Women's Day" program. She was very"down to earth" and interesting. You will enjoy the book especially if you are from Eastern North Carolina.

Love, love, love this book, storybook and wonderful recipes. Some people have been critical of the photographs, but I think they are just fine. How much more could you want in a book, Vivian at her best, telling her story and sharing her wonderful recipes.

Gorgeous book! And huge! I wasn't expecting the volume of it. I adore Vivian from the PBS show "A Chef's Life" and one day we will make it to her restaurants in Eastern North Carolina all the way from San Francisco, CA! The stories are the best part of this book. It's such an important work to document the native ingredients of where you are and give recipes that are historical and also one's that elevate those ingredients. If you are like me and love to curl up under a quilt and really read a cookbook this one will not disappoint!

Wonderfully written! Much more than a cook book. As someone who grew up in Eastern NC the stories really bring back memories of picking butter beans, cooking with and watching my mom can fresh vegetables from the garden. The recipes are easy to follow and turn out great. The pimento cheese and grits recipe even has my husband liking grits!

What a magnificent cookbook! This is a simply glorious compilation of Vivian Howard's engaging personality and talented expertise as a chef, and it is as educational as a textbook and entertaining as a novel. If you are looking for the same basic, down home Southern recipes that are in a zillion other cookbooks (or online) you might be disappointed; the recipes in this fabulous book have a unique twist...not necessarily difficult, but offer new experiences for the cook and the exploration of flavors for everyone.

The recipes as well as the background text are written in Vivian's style...I can almost hear her voice as I read. I am devouring this book with a passion, and cannot wait to try each recipe. The many pictures are artistic and styled to enhance the quaint rustic style of the book.

As a woman who is convinced I was born and raised in the South in a former life, I want to thank Miss Howard for this creative endeavor. It makes me happy!

I love watching Vivian on PBS. After living in NC for 4 years, I understand the culture & meaning of "food". Her recipes are from the heart & souls of many before her, and she continues on those Traditions! I highly recommend this book!

Awesome book! It covers Vivian's cooking "rules" that are very helpful, but most of all it addresses all types of foods grown in the South, and how they have affected the culture, the way of life, the history, the traditions - it is hard to lay down! Great gift!

I love the style: genius recipes combined with storytelling. The dishes are creative and also approachable for a home cook. This is the first cookbook I have ever just sat down and read like a novel. Will definitely whip one of these recipes up the next time I want to appear like a capable cook to dinner guests.

The book is lovely, it exceeded my expectations. It's more than a cook book, it's an indepth study of Vivian's little corner of NC with cultural, culinary and family ingredients all mixed in. It belongs on the shelf with Julia, with Jacques, and
with Shirley Corriher. A good gift for the good fans on your list.

Absolutely gorgeous book and beautifully written. Part autobiography, part cookbook, and definitely an education in the history and customs of eastern North Carolina food. Some reviewers did not like the photography. For the life of me i cannot see why- perhaps the matte paper instead of the typical glossy? This is a stunning cookbook. Do yourself a huge favor and BUY IT NOW. In fact order an extra copy because I guarantee you someone you know will want it as a gift.

This book was even better than I had expected. Vivian Howard writes just as she talks on her shows... down-to-earth! Have eaten at Chef and the Farmer restaurant, a high-end restaurant that serves food "outside the box". She shares many of her recipes in this book.

This cookbook is unlike any I have ever owned! The recipes are creative and I feel inspired to try my own flavor combinations. I love the stories of Chef Vivian Howard's life that are included. I so admire her and her husband, Ben. Their love of family and community in addition to entrepreneurial skill and willingness to take calculated risks motivates me to want to do the most with my life. I treasure this book. Thank you!

Such a wonderful book full of delicious stories and recipes from her family and folks of Kinston, NC. The photos are gorgeous and I was not expecting a huge, beautiful book. I am now convinced to go out and find some of the ingredients that I previously turned my nose up at and prepare these recipes! I also plan to visit that area and her restaurants. Thanks Vivian for all of your hard work on this book. It is amazing!!!
