This book was recommended to me after the sudden death of my husband. It addresses many of the thoughts and feelings I had and made me feel like I wasn't the only one. It addresses various types of untimely death, so I would recommend it to anyone who has lost a loved one to any type of unexpected 0death.

Very thoughtful and kind. Many things were explained here. So much can happen in just seconds. Most people don't talk about it even in a casual seating. I am a widow of a soldier, there is not enough words I can type that could describe the kind of man he was the good he had done in his life time the devastation this caused for all who knew and loved him. The joys and laughter he enflicked to others, the strength he shared to his family. The courage he demanded for his Army Units. Just to suddenly stop. I was brave and held my pride for him as he would want me to. Then the silence of it all. I always wondered if I did good. This book acknowledge all that was there and hidden and what is to come. I was joyfully commended of my reactions and unknown expectations. It won't ever be easy, but at least I have a clue and it's not so scary. This book explained a lot, an open eye to so much more that no one will talk about. It also opened my heart with ease and strength to face a journey on my own. The most concern for me was how do I raise my children without daddy. DL

In a surreal reality where you question on a daily basis if what you feel is "normal"...these women let you know that you are not alone. A definite read for those suffering from unexpected loss. I have bought 2 additional copies for family and friends.

Many books cover the same territory, but this one stands out for its 22 coping exercises near the end of the book. I recommend to those who have lost spouses that they consider instead specific books about the loss of a spoouse. there are many choices.

I have been reading anything and everything on grief since my husband's passing and this is by far the one who gives the most answers to my doubts and concerns. It is direct, honest and not scared of answering real questions instead of just using a formula.

No one can understand the pain & turmoil that comes from losing someone you love very deeply unless they too, have been forced to cross that ravine. I was hopelessly lost, unable to find my way back to putting my life into balance. I still have a long way to go, but this book has given me the guidance I needed to start that journey. I thank the authors for sharing their own tragedies and showing me how to give myself permission to grieve.

I recently lost my brother suddenly, and this is an excellent book. Since reading it, I have had other friends who knew people who had sudden losses, and in each case I recommended this book. It doesn't help you to fast-track your grief, but it helps you to understand the process and ways that you're dealing with it. It has helped me tremendously in working through my brother's death.

The reason I took off a star is they reference a website the author put together many times, [...] It looks like they sold the domain or it's no longer open. That's pretty disappointing - if you're going to publish information, you have a responsibility to keep the site open, in my opinion.

This book is written by authors who have experienced grief. The book was very helpful and easy to read. There are suggestions and examples of others life stories. I would recommend it for anyone who has experienced a sudden loss or for someone to help others in the grieving process.

I am going through a horrible loss of my boyfriend to a homicide. Nothing I feel will ever really "help" me. I can say though, that this book has been with me a lot lately. It doesn't help the pain, but maybe helps you see that others have experienced something similar....still reading it.

Those who lose a loved one, whether from accident or sudden onset of illness, often feel deserted and impotent. This book has good suggestions for dealing with the hidden (and not so hidden) feelings frequently experienced. Highly recommended reading.

It says "surviving sudden loss," but this book will help any of us who have suffered a loss. I can't imagine how painful it was for anyone to have lost a loved one unexpectedly. A different set of feelings, intensified by the guilt of not having been there. That's all I can say. It's a hard part of life as I myself prepare to open another chapter. We're never ready to say goodbye, expected or unexpected. With this book, fortunately, one can take a few pages at a time or skip to another section.

This is a wonderful book. My oldest daughter passed 6years ago. You never get over something like this, nor should you, but this book helps you deal with the new normal. You learn that you are not in charge of grief and you can't control it. There are many different situations, loss of parents, spouse, dear friends, all from different perspective of the authors various experiences.

This book singularly helped me after my best friend's sudden death while we were on vacation. It has the insight and pragmatism to guide you during your most lonely hours. It gives you permission to feel your feelings and steps to take to get through it all.

This book provides specific examples of many of the things we all think and feel while grieving, helping the reader feel less alone and more understood. It is particularly helpful for those who have lost loved ones to abrupt tragedy, whether medical or accidental. The bibliography offers a myriad of additional resources to assist with grieving.

I've struggled for months with what appeared to be a mid-life crisis. In researching how to get through it, I tracked the source down to delayed grief. I lost my brother in 1995 and my dad in 2000 in very similar auto accidents. I don't think I ever grieved them properly and it surfaced in my forties. This book is one of the ones I found to address my particular situation.

This is a well written guidebook to carry anyone through the experience of losing a close loved one suddenly. It contains sections dealing with specific losses such as: a spouse or partner, a sibling, suicide, mass death (such as terrorism), fallen heroes, and others. Each section is thoughtful and helpful. It also has a wonderful portion of the book carrying the reader step by step through the immediate aftermath of sudden death. The back couple chapters are dealing with additional resources and activities to help with grief work.

The authors of this book have both dealt with sudden death themselves. Part of what I found most useful was reading the sections they wrote about their personal situations. I'm still working on the back exercises. I think that will take a while. I wish I'd had this book in 1995 when I lost my brother. Even though my grief was delayed by decades, I am still finding it helpful. Grief is a very individual experience that nobody except the person inside your head will ever understand. These authors have written a resource to help you find your way through that deep, dark forest into the light again. I recommend it to anyone who's experienced a sudden death. I'll keep my copy when I'm finished to hand on to the first person I know who needs it. It helps.

I found this book enjoyable to read and could relate to the different experiences of some people. I wish I didn't have to read it, but because of the loss of my wonderful husband, this helped me understand some of the emotions I'm going through. Hope it helps someone else too.
