This book kept me entertained from beginning to end. Javier and Laura's story was so moving. I hated when I got to the end of the book because I know it will be awhile before another I Team one comes along.

This I-Team series is really good, I have enjoyed all the books of the series, this one seemed significantly more emotional. I enjoyed the characters, their strengths and fears. It didn't play out exactly how I had thought, but it was a good ride.

Not the best in the series. I found myself skipping pages and not really caring much about the two main characters. I think bringing in two new main characters into this series at this time, when it's already been established, was the mistake. I didn't care about Laura or Javier, and Laura was annoying at times. Very disappointed since I've been waiting for the next book to come out in this series.

I was interested in the story line, but the authors poor word choices kept getting in the way of me enjoying the story.

1. WAY TOO MANY military acronyms and confusing lingo. In a word - obnoxious!
2. It annoyed me when the author used "flat" instead of "apartment" or "condo." I live here in CO and nobody uses the word "flat" - Isn't that a UK thing?
3. "Dawg" and a few other choice words/phrases/and profanity that Javier would use didn't fit or flow well at all!
4. Javier's backstory and mission gone bad is ringing a lot like a true story, coming out as a movie. It made me somewhat uncomfortable when reading it.
5. Who isn't trying to kill Laura?
6. Ending - suck! The author only had a few ways to wrap this up and tie it with a bow, but I was kind of disappointed.
7. Haven't read any of the other books in this series, and now I am not sure if I want to.

I recommend reading First Strike, the erotica novella prequel, before reading this book. It’s a deliciously short and sexy story that gives us a glimpse into Javier and Laura’s no-strings attached weekend in Duboi City. This novella ends with a bang and the story continues in Striking Distance. It may be short but it’s pretty darn good. And it’s only 99 pennies!

Striking Distance opens up with Javier Corbray, a special OPs Navy SEAL, on a mission to capture a terrorist. The mission is going according to plan when he discovers Laura Nilsson, the woman known as the “Baghdad Babe”, and the same woman he had a passionate weekend with in Dubai City, had been held captive the entire time everyone in the world believed she was dead. This prestigious reporter’s life has been forever changed. She’s a survivor who has been broken mentally and physically and has a long, hard road of healing ahead of her.

Two years later, Javier is in on leave after one of his missions went terribly wrong and he was injured. While recuperating, he goes to Colorado to visit his SEAL buddy, Nate West, and his family. Laura, in the meantime, continues to struggle to get her life back together. She works for the I-Team in Denver and is preparing to testify against the terrorist who kidnapped and terrorized her. Javier never truly got over Laura, so when they see each other for the first time, the explosive chemistry that was intense the first time they met is still there simmering under the surface. But Laura is not the same vibrant, passionate woman she once was, though she still very much feels something strong towards Javier as well. When Laura’s life is threatened, Javier, ever the protector, goes to Denver to make sure she’s safe and to act as her bodyguard. What follows is a suspenseful and romantic story as Javier, the FBI, and Zach McBride (U.S. Marshall) investigate to find out who wants Laura dead.

During the time Javier stays with Laura, they are given the opportunity to explore what could’ve been between them before Laura was captured. For eighteen months, Laura had been beaten, raped, and threatened to be beheaded on a daily basis. She was treated like a slave and almost forgot who she was. Her healing journey has been slow. Javier plays a pivotal role in helping her down her path of healing. He is so damn sexy and sultry with his Puerto Rican good looks, big heart, and alpha protectiveness. He becomes Laura own personal hero in every way possible. Javier’s also dealing with his own issues ever since the mission that went bad. These two are very strong, compassionate, and intelligent people who have been broken emotionally and feel vulnerable. Together, they support each other and give the other exactly what’s been missing in their lives.

The romance between these two is beautiful with a perfect slow, sensual build. Considering what Laura has been through, anything too fast would’ve felt unrealistic. I love how Javier takes his time with Laura. Being that Javier is used to being dominant in the bedroom, it was heart-melting to see this potent man let Laura take charge in the bedroom, when she needed to be the one to take instead of being taken from. I felt a magnitude of emotions as Javier and Laura reconnected intimately. When Laura finally finds the courage to give herself to Javier, it was loaded with heat and passion. I think this might be one of the most romantic stories in the I-Team series that Pamela Clare has written to date.

Ms. Clare’s stories are always spot on with her deft and smart plotting. I thought the romance aspect to the story was a little bit more of the focus this time around, though the mystery and danger was always prevalent and continued to keep me guessing who the culprit was. The pacing does lull just a bit in the middle of the book, but it doesn’t take long for the pacing to pick back up. And the ending to this story absolutely slayed my heart, it was so incredibly emotional and touching.

Striking Distance is titillating and intense and another great edition to the I-Team series. This is a great series for romantic suspense lovers. These books are intelligent and well-written with smart and sexy characters. Each one of the I-Team books can be read as a stand-alone, but I’ve had a good time reading each of them. One of the things I like the most about this series is how Ms. Claire always brings back previous characters and includes them within the storyline. I was very happy to get page time with Marc, Julian, and Zach. You really don’t want to miss meeting Julian, another utterly sexy alpha hero that will melt your panties.

Striking Distance (I-Team #6) by Pamela Clare is another amazing installment in the I-Team series. This book is easily read as a standalone, but the whole series is very worth the read. Ms. Clare’s characters always grab me from the get go and keep me turning the pages.
Laura Nilsson is a war zone TV reporter, who is abducted and while the world has been told she has been beheaded, she is being held by an al Qaeda terrorist for eighteen months. Navy SEAL, Javier Corbray is on a mission to abduct the terrorist and finds a miracle, Laura Nilsson is alive.
Two years pass and Laura has found a place to heal and work on the I-Team in Denver, while testifying in court against her abductor. Javier comes to Denver to visit his best friend Nate on his ranch and take a break while recovering from wounds, both physical and mental from his last op. The two are reunited just as attempts are made on Laura’s life. They don’t know who is behind the threats, al Qaeda or someone she has had other interactions with as a journalist, but Javier isn’t leaving her side until she is safe.
The trauma of Laura’s abduction and abuse and the trauma of Javier’s bad op has been handled extremely well by this author. The plot moves at a fast pace with the constant threat against Laura, while amazingly fitting in the healing, redemption and love between the H/h. The sacrifice made at the end had me in tears and thank you so much to the author for the follow-up additional chapters. I can’t recommend this book enough!

Pamela Clare is the queen of romantic suspense. I forgot how much I love this series, and I have been hoarding this book for a while, saving it for a reading slump. Luckily I started reading it at home, because I was a watering pot before I even finished the prologue. I recommend that you read First Strike before starting Striking Distance, as it gives the short story of how Laura and Javier met over a weekend in Dubai. I think knowing their origins gave more depth to the story and made it all the more emotional knowing what Laura went through.

Our heroine, Laura Nilsson, was an investigative reporter covering dangerous human interest stories in the Middle East. During a live news report, she is kidnapped by a group of Al Qaeda, which is followed by 18 months of hell for Laura. Laura was a strong female character whose courage and perseverance were inspiring.

Our hero, Javier, a Navy SEAL, is devastated when he sees Laura's abduction live on the air, and later learns that Al Nassar said he killed her. Javier has vowed to take down Al Nassar, even though his commanders don't know his connection to Laura. That vow was how Javier came to be on the team that infiltrated Al Nassar's camp to capture the terrorist leader, and discovered that Laura was alive. Javier's rescue of Laura triggers a series of events that eventually bring them back together, even though they are not the same people who spent that amazing first weekend in Dubai. Javier is the typical hero that we have seen in the I-Team novels - strong, capable and protective of their women. I loved Javier and the way he helped Laura get over the things that happened to her in captivity.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves a steamy romance with a good dose of danger and suspense. Keep your tissues handy, because this one is a tearjerker. 4 stars / 3 flames.

Striking Distance is the sixth book in Pamela Clare’s I-Team series, and just like the five books before it, it’s amazing! It’s fast paced, exciting, heartbreaking, inspiring, romantic, sensuous… it’s everything we’ve come to expect from this amazing author!

This story deals with some difficult subject matters, including the heartbreaking aftermath of rape. The cover blurb alone tells us that this will be an emotional ride, but let me tell you… what Laura endured in captivity was hell. Even after being freed she continues to live that hell, and trying to put the pieces of her life back together and move on... well, I can imagine many women would just curl up and give up, but not Laura. She’s strong, she’s intelligent, she’s compassionate… she's truly a wonderful woman.

Javier Corbray is an amazing man. Of course he's sexy as all get out, but he's also protective, compassionate, honorable, devoted... he's all kinds of awesome! He understands all that Laura has been through and does whatever he can to make her life easier and to keep her safe. Laura has much to overcome, but with Javier on her side, anything and everything is possible.

One of the most compelling things about Pamela's stories is how she uses events or practices that really do happen, educating us to the world around us and doing it in a way that's entertaining. Don't misunderstand - I'm not saying there's anything enjoyable about drug rings, human trafficking, heinous acts in prisons, or setting women on fire... I mean that these are things we all should know about, but probably don't. Pamela gives this to us, making us aware of what's happening, but doing so in a 'first hand' way, through her characters' eyes, and giving us hope in the knowledge that there are people out there who are working to make a difference. To make things better. And who knows? Maybe we can find a way to help, too.

In case you aren’t already aware, Pamela Clare has given us a prequel novella, First Strike, which is Javi and Laura’s first meeting in Dubai, and the super sexy weekend they spent together. If you’re interested, you can read all about why this scene was cut, and how it came to be a novella, in My Spoiler Free Review of First Strike. As always, Pamela makes sure that, one way or another, her readers get her stories, told the way she wants them told - in their entirety!

Well, I best stop now before I start rambling - more than I already am. There's so much to say but all you need to know is that Striking Distance is a riveting, poignant story. Javi and Laura are a worthy addition to the other I-Team happily ever afters, and It doesn't get better than that!

My sincerest thanks to Pamela Clare for once again allowing me to be part of her reading team. As always, it’s been an incredible ride!

The I-Team reading order so far:

1. Extreme Exposure
1.5 Heaven Can't Wait - a novella found in the out of print anthology Catch of the Day and on ebook
2. Hard Evidence
3. Unlawful Contact
4. Naked Edge
5. Breaking Point
5.5. Skin Deep
5.9. First Strike
6. Striking Distance

Striking Distance begins with Javier out on a mission to bring in the man who abducted Laura and killed her eighteen months ago. But after getting into the man's compound he must stop to save a woman who says she's American. Little did he know that it was Laura... She's not the same woman he meet so long ago, but at least she is alive and safe now.

Two years later, Laura is glad to be back in America, and is testifying against the man who held her captive for so long where she was beaten, raped, and threatened to be killed every single day. Now though she's glad he is behind bars. But there is still someone out to kill her. That is where Javier comes in. He runs into Laura again and they decide to start building on their relationship.. Well sort of, they start off as friends this time. But he must do everything he can to keep Laura safe until they can figure out who is after her. She still has some secrets she's hiding though, things that are haunting her.. But so does Javier. These two have to go through so many hurdles but they do finally come out in the end in a beautiful HEA.

This book was very good. I really enjoyed it. The story was very unique in my opinion. No one else on the I-Team has had to undergo this much horror.. I felt so badly for Laura through out the whole book, and then towards the ending I was even in tears because of the things she had to go through! And Javier was always there with her, to protect and love her. The book also has an awesome epilogue! I hope this series continues with more awesome books such as this one!

So Pamela Clare does it again with another fantastic addition to the I-Team series (#6) If I'm honest it wasn't my favourite but that's a bit like saying it's not your favourite chocolate; you still loved it and want to eat it every day.

I'm so glad I read the extended prequel First Strike (I-Team After Hours)) before starting this. Not only is it a hot little read but it made a huge difference in understanding who this couple was before... well before events changed them.

This is an excellent read but the general tone of the story is slower, without as much of the hard hitting action we've grown accustomed to. I think the fact that both characters are damaged and suffering from PTSD had a bearing too. They spend a ton of time recovering and healing each other so the romance is slow burning (yet still super sexy).
If I'm nit-picking (which I only do with books I'm invested in) I disagreed with a couple of the h's decisions, not so much the big one -that moved me to tears and I understand the why's but the medical one. I also got to the point of eye-rolling with Laura constantly Skyping her G'ma and mother back in Switzerland. I'd have hated to miss the whole naked, manscaped Javier in the background scene though, -hilarious.

I loved so many things here too; Javier and Laura are awesome characters and I felt like I knew them by the end. Watching the sweet moments as they fall in love and heal, *big sigh*

Javier... Gah, Clare really knows how to write the perfect heroes. I loved how he sacrificed everything for her and that she trusted him to bring parts of her back to life. I loved that he was her mystery SEAL and she didn't know and he couldn't tell her. And yay we get the inclusion of past characters, in particular Marc & Julian and their ongoing bromance and Gabe's continued affair with adrenaline.

Navy Seal Javier Cobray can't forget his weekend in Dubai with the "Baghdad Babe" It was only meant to be a no-strings affair, but watching her get kidnapped on live TV eighteen months ago almost broke him and since then he's thought of little else but revenge on the terrorists that subsequently "killed" her. His latest mission however surprises everyone and finds Laura very much alive, being held at an Al Qaeda compound in Pakistan. He can't give away his identity but he is taking her home.

Two years later see's Laura Nilsson now working with the I-Team in Denver. She's struggling but has come a long way in her recovery and is now about to testify against the extremist leader who kidnapped her.

The romance gods are at work again because it's during this time that Javier (on medical leave) also finds himself in Denver, staying with his Seal buddy Nate West (Skin Deep (I-Team After Hours)) When Laura's life is threatened and a fatwa is placed on her head Javier makes it his mission to keep her alive.

Pamela Clare's I-Team is the inspiration behind a group of fans on Facebook called, appropriately, "Pamela Clare's I-Team." I became a member of this group a few weeks ago, and have truly enjoyed the camaraderie while counting down to the release of her sixth I-Team book Striking Distance on 5 November 2013. Luckily Clare had a remedy for everyone who was expressing withdrawal from one of their favorite series, which was the release of a prequel novella (First Strike) a few weeks ago.

Like so many others I waited till yesterday (5 November) to read Striking Distance and quickly became caught up in the story of Navy SEAL Javier "Javi" "Cobra" Corbray and Swedish-American television journalist, now I-Team reporter Laura Nilsson.

I do recommend that you read the two novellas that precede book six (Skin Deep and First Strike), as there are characters and motivations in both of these books that will help inform your read of Striking Distance.

In many ways, this was my favorite I-Team novel as I admired both protagonists and also how Clare handled the physical and emotional abuse of Laura at the hands of her captors for two years - as well as the reclamation of her life. It was inspiring on many levels and also helped shed light on abuses that we might otherwise ignore.

In addition to a tremendous amount of suspense and intrigue, a betrayal of friendship by a member of the I-Team (though I have a feeling redemption will be on its way for that character in the future), and what felt almost like a family reunion as characters from previous I-Team novels had fairly large supporting roles in this story, Clare offered a true sense of kindness and generosity of spirit between Javi and Laura as they became reacquainted with one another and learned to trust their feelings once again.

Having met a writer under a fatwa (yes, that writer), I hung out a lot with his bodyguard, who was a slightly older and smoother version of Javi (if you can picture that). It's hard to comprehend the effect of living with a known threat constantly - and the hyper-awareness and stress that brings - but Clare captures it perfectly in this novel.

I loved the plot twists and turns, the introduction of some new characters that I hope we'll see more of, and also the way that Clare concluded this book. I'm not going to give the plot away, but I will say that true love is represented here on many different and beautiful levels - and recommend that you have a box of Kleenex at your side as you read this edge-of-your-seat page turner.

I highly, highly recommend Striking Distance as well as Clare's other I-Team novels and give this book five stars.

If you're considering reading Striking Distance and you haven't yet read First Strike, do that. It's a short story prologue to SD and it's only 99 cents. Well worth it as it's a fantastic short that's really sexy and romantic.

And having read First Strike, the poignancy of Striking Distance will be even more acute. Both main characters are powerfully damaged and, surprisingly, the female lead is actually emotionally and mentally healthier at the beginning of this story than the hero is. Unexpected once you know what's happened to her in the time since First Strike's ending but she's been working at it while he hasn't. But her recovery is only slightly further along than his, and this couple does a great job of healing each other with every scene.

The first 50% of the book is very atypical of the I-Team series (which has become, in my opinion, one of the absolute top romantic suspense series published today), and I think fans might feel a bit put off. It's dark. It's nuts and bolts. It has a pall of tragedy and horror even as there's light and recovery visible throughout. It felt sort of like a procedural, if that makes any sense.

After the halfway mark, the story shifts and feels much more like the I-Team tale we're used to. The romance, the sexy playfulness, the great friendships. It's all there. But the problems introduced in the beginning are not problems that have easy solutions. Sure, PC could have waved her magic writer's wand and come up with a paper-thin scenario that would have made it all perfect, but she didn't. Some may feel that makes the HEA more bitter than sweet, but I disagree. I appreciated the HEA far more for the realism. These are characters who could have been seen as victims, but they just won't stay down. I really appreciated that. Ugh, I realize that sounds like there wasn't an HEA when there absolutely is. You'll have to read for yourself to see what I'm talking about because I don't want to spoil anything.

Javier and Laura are a lovely couple who put others above themselves time and again, which is exactly how we like our I-Team leads. Strong, compassionate and vulnerable. And hot. Let's not forget hot. They fulfill all the requirements and it'll be great to see them pop up in later stories.

This is really a 4.5 star read. I round up, but I have to say I felt that pall over the story from just how dark it is in the beginning weighs things down a bit. As much as I appreciated the realism, it affected my enjoyment of the story negatively. To be honest, I have an odd trigger with terrorism subjects having been across the river from the World Trade Center on 9/11/01. I can't explain it and I never know when it's going to pop up, so there's that as well. Some may find this too dark, but I'd tell them to stick with it if they can to get to the juicy romantic stuff later. It's well worth it.

I closed the book with a tear in my eye and a smile on my face and that's definitely saying something about how I felt about this HEA.

Author Pamela Clare has been so clever with her marketing that I find it impossible to review STRIKING DISTANCE without also talking about its prequel, FIRST STRIKE, so be sure to read <a href="[...]>my review of FIRST STRIKE too</a>. I’ll leave the finer points of the story descriptions to the blurbs, but here’s the gist of how these books fit together:

In FIRST STRIKE we meet Laura, an American TV reporter covering the Middle East, staging in Dubai before heading back to work in controversial territories, and we meet Javier, an American Navy SEAL, in Dubai for an R&R weekend after months of action with his team. Neither are looking for a relationship, so a weekend of no-strings passion is their only intention. After three dynamic days (& nights!), they turn their backs on the strong bond they’d unexpectedly formed. And then BAM! Pamela Clare leaves you with a cliffhanger tragedy of an ending.

Fast forward 18 months and you’re in the STRIKING DISTANCE prologue. Unbeknownst to the world, Laura has been held hostage by an Al-Qaeda group since just after Javier kissed her goodbye in Dubai. Javier is the SEAL team leader of an op against a compound where the last thing he expected was to rescue the woman he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about for over a year. Chapter one opens two years after the rescue, with Laura now working as an investigative newspaper reporter in Denver, Colorado, and Javier on leave, suffering from PTSD. Laura and Javier are brought together once again, each with a freight train of personal baggage, working side by side to extinguish a terrorist threat.

Once you've been sufficiently teased by the prequel, you're ready for the explosive (quite literally -- those flames on the cover? not a bonfire!) follow-up novel. I’ve never read a stronger opening to a book than the prologue in Striking Distance. Clare <a href="[...]>posted it online</a> months ago as a teaser and it slayed me. Thank God the book lived up to its promise!

Laura is a survivor. Despite that she spent nearly two years in captivity by terrorists, where she was frequently raped, that when her captor was brought to justice he put a hit on her head, or that she has to continuously deal with a great heartbreak, Laura is determined to live life on her terms. She doesn’t wilt in the face of danger, but she also doesn’t take stupid risks, so when Javier enters her life again, she doesn’t turn down his offer of protection while the threats and risks are eliminated.

Javier’s mixed heritage, Spanish guitar serenades, Navy SEAL intensity, and dedication all combine to make a sexy and likable hero. His patience and creativity in easing Laura back into an intimate relationship is incredibly sweet. It also makes for some creative hanky-panky. ;-) For fans of SEALs, you’ll die for the scene near the end where he gets to put his frogman skills to use in an effort to rescue Laura. And as if all that wasn’t enough, his actions and words in the final three chapters regarding an emotional thread of the plot – not the romance or suspense threads – are what make him an incredible hero. (Sorry, no spoilers here!)

One of the really beautiful aspects of the story is the way Laura interacts with the Muslim family of someone who’s accused of trying to kill her in a terrorist plot. Not only is Laura not blinded by stereotypes, but even after everything she suffered as a prisoner of an extremist, truth and respect are what govern this heroine’s emotions and actions; I can’t think of a more heroic trait than that. Laura’s final scene with this family was one of my favorite in the whole book.

In fact, it was refreshing to read a book that dealt with terrorism in such a real, personal way, where it was more than simply a plot device to represent ‘bad things’. Clare’s I-Team books always tackle gritty real-world problems, so it’s not surprising that she didn’t shy away from this current affairs hot topic. I felt Clare did a truly great job of showing the importance of respect, tolerance and perspective in a non-preachy way.

The series name I-Team stands for Investigative Team, because all of the books in the series have a heroine that works as an Investigative Reporter for the Denver Independent. (Sidebar: Clare used to be just such a reporter in Denver, so she brings authenticity and first-hand experiences to the table.) One of the few things that caused a minor ding on my rating scale was that Striking Distance felt a little less investigating-y (hey, I’m an editor; I can make official rulings on spellings) than previous books in the series. In the prior books, both the heroines and heroes have independent storylines that converge, and the heroes play big roles in the mystery/investigation side of the plot, but I felt that was a little less true for Javier. He was a strong and fully fleshed-out character, but most of his arc was of the internal variety; his external goal was more-so to support and protect Laura, and I felt it leant a slightly different tone to the book. Laura, too, seemed to do a little less investigating than other I-Team heroines.

Although this book is fully capable of being standalone, the joy of reading the I-Team series in order is all about the bromance. The heroes and heroines are all friends and make an appearance in this book, and the men work together in some capacity (politician, law enforcement, etc.). Their interactions jump off the page, most often from hilarity and ribbing, sometimes from sheer cohesion, and when you’re lucky, some tender sincerity. Sherlock and Watson, step aside.

And let it be known that I’m not a big crier when I read, but I teared up a few times with this one. Gah!

As a standalone romantic suspense novel if I hadn’t read any of the other I-Team books, I’d give Striking Distance 4.5 stars. (Bear in mind I'm incredibly precious with 5 stars, reserving a true 5 for only a handful out of all the books I've ever read.) Comparing it to the rest of the I-Team collection, my personal rating is 4, which goes to show how amazing the whole series is! Check out my <a href="[...]>favorite Striking Distance quotes</a> here at Goodreads.

Thank you to Berkley for giving me a free Advanced Reader Copy of Striking Distance in exchange for an honest review.

<a href="[...]>Pamela Clare’s blog</a> has some excerpts of Striking Distance, so you can check things out for yourself.

And if you’re even the teensiest bit interested in audio books, there should be a law that you also try Striking Distance on audio. Why? The narrator, Kaleo Griffith, will curl your toes. (Go on, I’ll wait why you <a href="[...]>sample</a> him, er, ugh, his narration.) Seriously, I’m happy just listening to him read copyright and production information. I haven’t yet heard his rendition of Striking Distance, but I have heard the rest of the series, so I know it’ll be impossible for it to not be great. (And for the record, I’ve never liked an audiobook until these.) If you buy any of Clare’s books in Kindle format through the store.com then you can snag the audio companions for a bargain $3.99 each at audible.com. DO IT. Unfortunately the titles aren’t available at audible.co.uk (lots of sad faces) but you can order the CDs elsewhere.

TV reporter Laura Nilsson, known as the “Baghdad Babe,” spent eighteen months in an Al-Qaeda compound after being kidnapped live on the air. Two years later, she’s still wondering why.

No mission in Javier Corbray’s fourteen years as a Navy SEAL affected him the way Laura’s rescue did. No woman had stirred his protective instincts the way she did. And he wants her more than he’s ever wanted anyone.

As Laura and Javier’s passion ignites, so does Laura’s need to discover the mystery of her past. Especially when she learns that her abduction was not random—and that she’s still a target for a killer with an impenetrable motive. Now Javier will have to rely on his skills to keep the woman he loves from being struck down before she dares uncover the truth.
I have never been kidnapped and tortured by terrorists but I felt an instant and deep connection with Laura Nilsson. Her strength and courage bought me to tears. I couldn’t stop reading this book, from the action packed first page I just kept going. Javier Corbray is larger than life and I just went all weak in the knees for him, so I’m grateful I was sitting down to read. I’m a sucker for an Alpha male in a uniform with a protective streak and a strong lady to balance him.

Laura and Javier are perfect for one another. This was the first I-Team book I read and I have to say it will not be the last. I’m going back to read them all from the beginning and then I will read this one again just for the fun of it. Every person introduced in this story fascinated me and I loved how the author brought everyone to life so vividly by balancing their personalities with the storyline and setting.

Striking Distance by Pamela Clare
5 Stars (But honestly it is so much more than that!)
Javier Corbray has worked very hard to get where he is now. He is leading of a group of SEALs on a mission to capture Abu Nayef Al-Nassar, a Saudi national who is the leader of an al Qaeda splinter group operating in northwestern Pakistan. The United States wants him captured because he has orchestrated many attacks against United States citizens; Javier wants him because of what he did to Laura. Javier and Laura shared an intimate weekend; both agreed to no strings however Javier’s heart didn’t get the message. He had intentions of contacting Laura when the unthinkable happened. Laura was kidnapped; Al-Nassar claimed responsibility and that he killed her. Their mission accomplished, Javier is returning to the helo when he hears,”H-help me….I’m…I’m an American too!”
Laura is now tied with Natalie as my favorite ITeam heroine. The abuse she suffered - physical, sexual and psychological, is more than I can comprehend. She is strong and determined. She will find a way to build her life again, and she will go back to what she loves journalism. As all ITeam members she is great at her job. She is aware that her past makes her a target but she is determined to use her skills and voice to help. Laura is unwavering in her determination to take back her career, however she is unsure on how to work on the personal relationships in her life.
Laura and Javier are wonderful characters separately but together they are a very special couple. Because of their earlier connection you feel the chemistry immediately and there is a deep love. They know that life is precious and even though they promised no strings, they each left their weekend in Dubai hoping to reconnect, only to have that hope extinguished when Laura was kidnapped. Their hearts have realized this new chance is something rare and should not be squandered. Can Laura ever be with someone intimately again? Javier is the perfect man to help her find that part of herself. Where First Strike was filled with ultra steamy scenes; Striking Distance is filled with scenes that are both steamy and sensual. In Dubai they were both active in finding mutual satisfaction; in Denver Javier is determined to help Laura allow herself to feel again. Javier is brave, honorable and sexy as sin in this book. He holds regrets deep in his heart that only Laura can help heal. It is fitting that Nate is his best friend, as they are very similar to the core.
This book is about a lot more than two former lovers finding each other again. Within the first six chapters I laughed, I cried and my heart raced. Danger and deep emotion made me turn the pages. Laura has a lifetime slot on a terrorist kill list, but she refuses to let that shape her life. There are many times where Laura could have made a decision that could have been easier for her to handle emotionally but she is determined to do what is right, not what is easy. I myself find her choices both heartbreaking and courageous.
I have been blessed to have finally read the book that took a place in my heart a year ago. And I will tell you this book is more incredible than I ever anticipated. I don’t know how she does it but Pamela Clare books just keep on getting better. Out of the over 100 books I have read in 2013 – this is my number one – my favorite. One I will re-read again and again. I plan on getting the audiobook read by Kaleo Griffith for my iPod on release day too.
I received this book from Pamela Clare in exchange for my honest review; however I purchased an e-book to keep with all my other Pamela Clare ITeam favorites.

A reporter is kidnapped and thought to have been decapitated. Javier's SEAL teams goes after a terrorist and as they are ready to leave a woman steps up & says she's an American. When he pulls her hood off it is Laura the reporter who was taken 18 months ago. He grabs her and puts her in the helo.
Two years later she must testify against the man who raped, humiliated, and terrorized her. After her testimony he threatens her. She reunites with Javier tho she doesn't know he was the one who rescued her. Between him, the U.S. Marshal, and the FBI they must find out who is trying to kill her before they succeed.

I loved this story!!! There was a short story that gave you some background info on these two. They had met and had a short no strings attached affair. I liked Laura because she is a strong, independent, woman who was put thru Hell and is trying to put her life back together. Javier is a hot, sexy, loyal SEAL who will do anything to protect her. If I could give this book 10 stars I would. I laughed and I cried. I wouldn't mind having Javier protecting me

This book is very well written, intense, enthralling, emotional, romantic and even funny at times.

I will start out by saying that before you read Striking Distance, pick up First Strike, a novella prequel. SD is a stand alone book, however First Strike enhances the emotion and understanding you will have for the characters. First Strike is much more erotic than Pamela Clare's norm, yet it felt so right.

I have read all of PC's books. This book seems to be so much more from her heart. All of her books feel this way, but, SD, is a couple notches above. Ms Clare doesn't simply write a book. She creates characters and scenarios that are complicated, powerful, compassionate and most of all believable. I found myself wanting to add them to my extended family. She weaves characters from previous books into each addition to the I-Team series, keeping them all alive and active. They fit into Striking Distance seamlessly without taking away from the main characters.

Ms Clare is diligent to distraction with her research. Places, people, cultures and circumstances become so real due to her fine attention to detail.

I'm not going to write a synopsis of the book. I have a link below for a review that does a fabulous one.

Now, for my giddiness over the release of this book. It has been long awaited. I've counted down the days. I savored it as I read it. I love this book. I have hard copy, digital and I'm about to go buy the audible version performed by Kaleo Griffith. I'm sure he will have me even more enthralled.

Drop everything. Read the book now! It's that good. Then go out and get all of her books, including her historical books, they will knock your socks off.

Luckily, when I discovered the I-Team series; they were all out up to this one. Instead of waiting for a series to be published one by one, I was able to binge read. That is so much more fun than waiting endlessly, except now I'm suffering from withdrawal. At first I found the beginning disjointed. Looking back, there probably wasn't any other way of doing it and once you get into it, you understand. The sappy 19 years later scene at the end kept me from giving it 5 stars. Maybe what happened after the wedding could have been a novella but that would have been awkward. To get the most of this book, I consider it essential to read Skin Deep (Megan and Nate's story) and First Strike (the prequel). Just wouldn't be the same without having read those two first. More than many other series, she keeps her characters involved in all the books and not in just a token reference. That's how she makes you so addicted to following the lives of her characters.

Only the most talented authors are able to produce a series with no loss of freshness, no drop in quality. Pamela Clare is one of those authors. In my opinion, Striking Distance is Ms. Clare's best work yet.

One reason for the quality of the I-Team series is Ms. Clare's background as a successful journalist. She doesn't shy away from the difficult subjects, and she doesn't give her characters any easy outs. Striking Distance is a story of love arising from unthinkable cruelty and violence, but that violence is never played for shock value. It's used to let the characters shine.

The heroine, Laura Nilsson, is both incredibly strong and heartbreakingly fragile. The hero, Javier Corbray, is just the man Laura needs to help her heal - strong enough to protect her, knowing enough to seduce her, and big-hearted enough to love her. The balance between romance, suspense and subplots with other I-Team characters is maintained to perfection. I finished the story feeling that I knew Laura and Javier personally. This is a book to be reread and savoured. If you read romantic suspense and haven't tried the I-Team series, you are missing out on the best of the genre.

Another amazing read by the very talented Pamela Clare!! What can I say that hasn't already been said about her talent? Striking Distance is an emotional roller coaster that will leave the reader raw and crying in one paragraph and then uplifted and encouraged in the next. What makes this story even more heart wrenching is knowing the story line happens on a regular basis. I shed so many tears throughout this book. I couldn't put it down. Pamela Clare has once again written a novel that sinks into your heart and soul, not just your mind

Laura Nilson is a TV reporter who is abducted while reporting live on the air in Islamabad and spends eighteen months in an Al Qaeda compound until her rescue by a Navy SEAL team headed by none other than Javier Corbray, a man she had a brief, but passionate fling with two months before her kidnapping.

When Javier realizes Laura is actually alive, he can't believe it. And although he immediately recognizes her, he keeps his identity to himself under order and, concealed by a camouflaged face, Laura never recognizes him.

The story picks up two years later in a Manhattan courtroom where Laura is testifying against her Al Qaeda captor, Abu Nayef Al-Nassar. During the proceedings, Al-Nassur threatens Laura's life and makes it clear she will never be safe from his reach, thanks to his many followers. The looming threat by Al-Nassur keeps the element of danger pumping through the pages when it needs it, and the scenes that take place as a result, are intense.

Following the courtroom drama, the scene opens in Denver, where we learn that Laura is now a reporter on the Denver Independent's I-Team. At the same time, Javier is also in Denver visiting his longtime friend, Nate West (Skin Deep/I-Team #5.5). Some of my favorite scenes actually take place between Javier and Nate in this story. They both suffer traumatic war and/or basic "rough" life wounds. Although Javier's wounds aren't physically obvious like Nate's scarred face is, they are definitely right under the surface, and he is forced to address them in this book and does so with a lot of nudging from Nate. Although I will always be team Marc (Unlawful Contact/I-team #3) Striking Distance had me crushing hard on Javier. I found him to be not only sexy and dangerous (in that hot sort of way), but also a little bit vulnerable.

When Laura and Javier reunite for the first time in the story after her rescue, it's at a barbecue at Nate's ranch and, as they grow closer to one another again, they begin to rekindle their relationship. While the romance is slow to build in STRIKING DISTANCE, given Laura's traumatic sexual experiences while being held captive, it was realistic and far more believable than if she and Javier had jumped in the sack immediately. And knowing how hot their chemistry was in FIRST STRIKE, I knew it would be worth the wait. It was very emotional seeing Laura struggle to find her sexual self again and realize that although she had her free will and so much more taken away from her after her abduction, she was still worthy of everything Javier was willing to give her.

Laura is an exceptionally strong Heroine and I found myself wondering more than once how much of herself Pamela Clare channeled into creating her. This book is full of moments that pull at your heartstrings. I won't slip a spoiler in, but I will say that Laura is forced to make some heartbreaking decisions that show just how strong her character really is.

One of my favorite things about the I-Team series is the obvious amount of research that goes into each book, which I'm sure can be credited to Pamela Clare's own time as an investigative journalist. She knows how to provide credibility, which in turn paints a phenomenal scene. Another one of my favorite things about the series is the way characters from past I-Team books are intertwined into each new story. When I pick up a new I-Team book, I know I'll be reunited with the familiar characters that made me fall in love with the entire series in the first place. These "cameos" almost always provide a few laughs as well, and I always look forward to them.

I had the privilege of reading both STRIKING DISTANCE and its prequel erotic novella, FIRST STRIKE, several weeks before each of their release dates. I would highly recommend reading FIRST STRIKE first. I found it to be a great introduction to the characters and greatly added to the measure of depth I felt for Laura and Javier while reading STRIKING DISTANCE.

I found STRIKING DISTANCE to be the darkest of the series, and that's not a bad thing. Its characters, particularly its heroine, must address some intensely painful issues to rebuild their lives.

Unlawful Contact is still my favorite I-Team story to date, but STRIKING DISTANCE is very close behind it. Like each I-team novel, STRIKING DISTANCE is romantic suspense at its finest!

Striking Distance is an excellent novel. Clare writes hot, exciting romance along with an intelligent, socially relevant story, appealing to readers who like their romance thoughtful and textured. Laura is strong and courageous, determined to rebuild her life in the aftermath of the horrendous torture she experienced. Javier is fierce, protective and passionate, showing so much tenderness for Laura, who's dealing with intense emotional wounds. Readers will love this sexy, thrilling romantic suspense novel, and root for Laura and Javier to get their happy ending.

I was prepared to like Pamela Clare's most recent I Team novel, but it surpassed my expectations. This is an amazing book with such a great cast of characters and one of the most amazing hero/heroine duos I have ever read! Javier and Laura have such a deep and genuine love for one another. The story of her capture, rescue, attempts on her life, and everything in-between make for an unforgettable read. This story reminded me of Linda Howard's Cry No More. I was impressed by Clare's willingness to go outside of a normal happy ever after. It was, but not in the usual way. The epilogue was so thorough and left me completely fulfilled. Amazing job on this book and a must read for any romance or romance suspense lover!

This is an absolutely wonderful book! I could not put it down until it was finished. I have read all of her I-Team books, and they all are wonderful, suspenseful and, yes, hot. Her characters are so realistic that I couldn't help feeling for all of them. And Pamela Clare keeps you guessing until the very end. Although it would be nice if you had read all of her past books, it is definitely not necessary to understanding the book. I would definitely recommend this book to all. I just finished it and am already looking forward to Pamela Clare's next book.

LOVED LOVED LOVED this book and finished it last night. I am not a professional reviewer just to let you know, I'm more of a professional romance book reader who loves happy endings.

This is how romantic suspense should be written. Sucked me in from the very beginning and and not once was I taken out of the story the entire time I was reading it. Pure escapism and thrill ride from beginning to end. The hero is smokin' hot with the morals and values to match I just wish there were more like him in the real world. The heroine, Laura Nillson was just the perfect match for Hero Javier Corbray- beautiful, strong and independent. I did love how the story included the H/H's heritages. I haven't read any stories with a character who had a Swedish background.

I liked how we see old friends from the I-Team series and met some new ones as well. There is just the right amount of steam and sexual tension. I felt that the love scenes were very sensual and added to the story and did not detract from it at all.

I've always believed that good fiction has to have conflict and there is plenty in this story. There are tough choices that the hero and heroine make that I don't know if I could have done the same -it fits the story and their characters perfectly.

I will not give the ending away but I will say the happy ending comes--just not always how we would want it or when.

I was given this copy by the publisher for an unbiased review.

This is one my new favorites by Pamela Clare and an excellent addition to the I-Team series.

Pamela Clare does it again!
In the latest addition to the ITeam series, Striking Distance, Pamela Clare continues to give her readers passion, romance and suspense with brief moments of comic relief.
Ms. Clare's writing style is flawless leaving this reader fully satisfied at the end of the story, yet longing for the story to never end.
She seamlessly brings in past heroes from the previous ITeam books creating nostalgia for ITeam fans.
Striking Distance, Laura and Javier's story, had me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails, fanning myself, wiping my tears, and snorting with laughter.
To catch the beginning of their love story, read First Strike by Pamela Clare.
Enjoy!

This novel is fan-freaking-tastic. Seriously. Ms. Clare has an amazing ability to create fully developed characters and storylines that are above average for the romantic suspense genre. I won't rehash the plot, as the synopsis is available above, but I will say that Laura and Javier are worth the emotional investment. Both characters have suffered damage to their souls and find pieces of their healing within the other. I laughed and cried while reading this book and found myself thinking about it when I had to put it down. Above and beyond a great romance, this book also offered a look at issues that are very real in this world. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that enjoys romantic suspense with strong storylines. Also, if you have a friend that is a snob when it comes to romance (let's face it, we all know one), this is the book to change their minds.

Pamela Clare's latest book definitely doesn't disappoint. It has a terrific, heart-wrenching story that tackles social and moral issues, a great heroine, a truly wonderful hero, action, adventure, and of course romance...lots and lots of romance. Even if you haven't read any of her other I-Team books, you will love it. And if you want a bit more depth to the experience, read the short story prequel, First Strike--it makes the story that much more poignant.

Pamela Clare is an incredible author. She cares deeply for her characters and it shows in the books she writes. She made me care about Javier and Laura (as well as the rest of the ITeam couples) I really enjoyed First Strike and Striking Distance. While I was reading I felt like I was going on the journey with them and couldn't wait to see what would happen next. Congratulations Pamela Clare.

## AWFUL. Omg, this book was excruciating. I loved this series, but this book... Gah, no thanks. This story is so depressing, the suspense practically nonexistent, and the characters boring and bland. I recommend skipping this one.

REVIEW:
I liked this story but was not in love with it. This was an extremely intense story with a lot of sorrow and hurt. Maybe that is way I did not feel connected with the story. I thinking that if you are a fan of Pamela’s you will enjoy Javier & Laura’s story. This being my first Pamela Clare story I think it was just a little to intense for my mind frame at the time I read.
I do plan on giving Pamela’s I-Team series another shot.
