Better then buying actual kits.....My 9yr. science lover LOVES this book! Yes, you have to prepare for the experiments but hey, kids shouldn't just be handed something all ready to go, it wont teach them the very first step in science experiments, which is.....PREPARING.

This book has some good ideas, but doesn't really have the scientific method in mind. The questions don't keep independent and dependent variables in mind when conducting the experiment. I had to change each of the experiments to allow the students to measure something and keep a log book (critical foundational skill). It's a good book if you just want to do science - like projects. It needs some tweaking in order to use it in the classroom.

This book with most basic sciences is good for ALL ages. It is a necessary supplement to school where there is often little or no practical lab work done. It allows the child to learn that science exists other than in the school! The use of ordinary ever-day items to create experiments makes the essential connection between book learning and real life. It is especially valuable in school where children are taught that the bible is the source of knowledge.

During summer break, in order to keep the boredom away, I like to provide my children with a stash of fun ideas to keep them busy. The more educational punch to the activities, the better. 101 Great Science Experiments is one of the favorites in the stash this year.
As the title says, there are 101 full-color, fully illustrated, step-by-step experiments. Most of them are easy enough for my older elementary and middle school students to do on their own! While many of the experiments require several supplies, most of them are readily found around the house and aren't at all expensive. I love that we can give a quick glance at the supply list, pictured at the top of each experiment, before jumping into anything.
There is only a brief explanation of each experiment, but it's surprisingly "enough" - especially when kids are doing the experiments on their own. And, since most of the experiments don't require a bunch of time (and they aren't getting bogged down with too much explanation), they will often get on a roll and do several experiments in a row.
If I had to come up with a list of "fundamental" science experiments that I think every child should do before diving into upper level science studies, this book includes most of them. By the end, your children will have completed 7-15 experiments on the topics of air and gasses, water and liquids, hot and cold, light, color, growth, senses, sound and music, magnets, electricity, motion and machines. It covers a vast array of science topics!

Interesting & easy science experiments. My 10 year old grabbed it as soon as it got here & even took it to cub scouts with him so he could continue looking through it. Good for a child if around 10 & younger too. Easy, step by step.
