Last Words by Shari Ryan

There has not been a book that has touched me as deep as Last Words has. A truly mesmerizing web of complexity that has completely intertwined past history and present day.
No where else will you find a story so thought provoking that it stays with you long after the last page, the last sentence, the last word. A hauntingly beautiful romance
that spans a lifetime of history. Amelia is 91 years old and she has kept hidden a secret for 74 years. But now that she is in the hospital and not doing well, she has asked her
granddaughter Emma to read to her from her diary. A diary she began in 1945, when she arrived in New York from the war. Then ensues one of the most gut-wrenching stories
that I have ever read. The horror of life inside a concentration camp and what Amelia endured and survived is nothing short of miraculous. After losing her mother, father and brother in a Nazi concentration camp, Amelia has resigned herself to die there. She knew that after seeing all the death around her, there was no way that she will ever get out of their alive. That is until she see kindness in the unlikeliest of friends. She knew she should not even be talking to the Nazi soldier, but he wasn’t the same as the others. There was something different in his eyes. And what began as a friendship turned into a lifetime of love. But sadly, their happy ever after doesn’t quite happen… Separated after the war Amelia has no idea what has happened to the kind soldier. While in the hospital Amelia pushes for her granddaughter to go out with the young, hot, cardiologist Dr. Jackson Beck. Emma has had her own share of a rough relationship and is finally able to move on with her life. After overhearing Emma read from the diary to her grandmother, Jackson wants nothing more than to continue the story. What develops is a bond, quite deep and intimate. A wonderful story of love through, above and beyond the constraints of time.
What was even more thought provocative and emotional is the authors Afterword. The words herein tell of survival and self preservation. Of the life of a grandmother raised in a time very different from ours. This short afterword said so much of what isn't said that I was left in tears and tissues even more so than the book itself.
All of this book is beautifully written. I have read ninety percent of Shari's other books and this one is different. While I love all of Shari's books this one moved me. It stays with you. It leaves you with things to contemplate and consider. Things you probably never took the time to begin to comprehend, and even though we try, we may never fully understand. But it's stories like these that make up the fabric of our lives today - of our grandparents and their parents who forged on in the face of things that are completely inconceivable to us today. How they went on to live full and wonderful lives. I can't thank Shari enough for this book. You have opened eyes that were not ever closed but less unaware.Word of warning: have tissues at the ready!

I love historical fiction. I love historical romance. When these two genres blend, I'm in heaven. I love to read all time periods, but I have a special love for books set in the WW1 and WW2 eras. There is something about love in a time of war that really gets me. Shari J. Ryan's latest book, Last Words, is exactly the kind of historical romance that hits me in the heart.

Last Words actually takes place in both the past and the present. The past is set in war torn Czechoslovakia, and tells the story of a young Jewish woman whose family is literally destroyed in front of her eyes. Faced with the possibility of being the only member of her family left, Amelia does everything she can to stay alive. In the midst of the daily horrors she experiences, Amelia finds an unlikely reason to hope.

In the present, Emma Hill is asked by her 91 year old grandmother, Amelia, to read from the diary she wrote to record her time and experiences in the concentration camp. As the past creeps into the present, Emma learns that there are some secrets that are too painful to recall, that there is always hope and that true love endures regardless of time or place.

I really enjoyed this book. There were a few places where I had to put the book down because the scenes in the concentration camp were just so vivid and real. I'd read them and need a break to regroup and process. I loved the relationship between Emma and her grandmother. It was warm and pure. The love stories that happen in the present are really nice. One old, one new; both passionate and sweet. I have to admit, though, my favorite part of this book was the attention to detail and authenticity that Shari J Ryan was able to achieve. Writing a book set in Europe during WW2 requires an enormous amount of research and commitment. Trying to weave fiction and history together is no small feat. Last Words is a wonderful example of this blending.

I am COMPLETELY blown away by this story. I am a sobbing mess here. I actually listened to it on audio, (which I highly recommend) so the story lasted quite a bit of time as I had to break for life in between. I think maybe that added to the journey of this story for me.

What the heck did I just listen to? I mean... my god.... Although, this is a work of fiction... you realize that people actually endured this kind of life, and the strength and survival skills necessary to come out of those years alive. And it's sad as we really lose some of the last of them, that their stories will only be read and not told. A whole generation of people not getting to experience these survivors.

There are two love stories going on here. And while I really enjoyed Emma and Jackson. It was the old love story of a couple of what would be 90-year old lovebirds that held me captivated. They had been together through some of the worst things imaginable and torn apart, but never forgotten by Amelia over the rest of her life.

I was the thinking that the title might not speak to people if they were deciding on a book to read. Some people might see a story about The Holocaust and pass. You know, I might have been one of those people. Then the audiobook opportunity dropped into my lap and I figured... Why not?
I'm here to tell you that that title really means so much to the story and you might not really see how important it is until you get to the end. But, please don't pass on this book. It makes me sad to think that I might not have heard this story otherwise. Such a completely beautiful story. <3

Wow, just wow! This book was amazing, it truly was an emotional, powerful, heart wrenching but beautiful read. The non-fiction part is really heartbreaking to read at times, but it's a story that needs to be told and never forgotten. The fiction part is beautifully written, I loved Emma, I was so pleased she left her bad relationship behind and gave Jackson a chance ( with a little help from Amelia!) I, like Jackson, couldn't wait to read more from Amelia's diary. I really felt as if I was there with her, I ugly cried at times but there was also a little humour that made me giggle! Charlie, what an amazing man he was, I'm pleased he got his ending with Amelia, just wished it had been sooner. This really is one of the best books I've read this year, at times I was left speechless, the author truly put her heart and soul into the story. If you only read one book this year, please make it this one, you won't be disappointed, I wish I could give it more than 5*.

Wow. Wow wow wow.

I just don't know what to say. Shari J Ryan rocked my world with this book. She brought history to life with her fictional story. Amelia fell in love with someone she wasn't supposed to. She lived through a nightmare but was able to find a beautiful bright spot in the darkness. And while the real life events hurt, I couldn't put it down. The history is what drew me to this book in the first place, because even though it is heart breaking it is important that we know our past and the past of those that suffered gravelly.

Emma is on a mission to find her grandmother's lost love before she passes. While also finding in love herself.

The story of love, loss, sacrifice, and life is told through the eyes of a survivor and the woman who would do anything from her.

Despite the fact that the book flips between the past and present it's easy to follow, the writing is flawless and beautiful.

Shari Ryan stole my heart with this book.

I've never read a book that's touched me as much as Last Words by Shari Ryan. There was so much beauty, emotion, heartache, love, grief....just everything in one amazing story. Hands down, it's the best book I've EVER read.

I really loved the style that Ryan used to tell this story. Going from present to the past with each chapter added that much more depth and made it flawless. Even if you're not a history person, don't let it keep you from embracing this piece of work. You will not want to put it down!

I'm a huge fan of this author's work and she has surpassed everything else she ever written. I'm willing to bet she bawled her eyes while putting these words down--it's that epic. And when you're finished, you're left breathless, yearning for more of Emma and Jackson, and of Amelia and Charlie. Every ounce of emotion in you will be stirred when you're done.

Congrats Shari on this beautiful masterpiece!!

You know, this audible is probably my most favorite one I've listened to so far. I loved the accents. I loved that the narrators fit the characters so perfectly.

On top of having fabulous narrators, this story is amazing. I don't read a ton of historical romance, but I find that when I do, I typically really love it. Last Words is no exception. I absolutely adored these characters. Jackson and Emma were so cute. Charlie and Amelia were devastating.

The story does go back and forth between present day and Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia during WWII, and I felt it was a creative way to go about it. The story told from that historical time is gut-wrenching; however, as I was reading, I felt that from other stories written about this time, Last Words was mild in comparison when it came to depicting what these people had gone through. The afterword actually does state that Last Words is mild compared to what truly occurred during such a dark and terrible time in world history.

If you love historical romance or if maybe you are afraid of historical romance, I recommend this book! It has the best of both worlds with characters that you can't help but just love.

Wow, wow, wow, wow!! This is going to be one of those reviews that I don't think I can coherently write. Whatever I say, I don't think it will clearly explain how much I LOVED this story, and how much you MUST read this book.

From the opening page and the prologue I was swept away on a journey of discovery alongside Emma, Amelia, Charlie and Jackson. I don't even want to get into the details of who the characters are because I truly believe you just need to read this and experience every page, every word and every detail for yourself in it's purest form.

This book is quite possibly one of the most emotional and gut-wrenching books I have read for a long time. This book is filled with sadness, terror, emotional and physical turmoil. But it is also filled with so much HOPE, so much positivity, and beauty...

And as well as stories from the past and the horrific and emotional side to it, Shari J Ryan has also managed to get just the right amount of humour and lightness into the story. With some great humour and parts which will make you smile, this book really does have it all

Words cannot describe the beauty between these pages. The horrors of what the characters went through, and the real-life atrocities of the world. This is love in it's purest form, finding your ONE TRUE LOVE, and not letting ANYTHING stand in it's way. It's a story of survival and hope even in the bleakest of times...

I shed so many tears reading this book, and tears in all ways... tears of sadness, shock, and happiness. You WILL need tissues, I've not cried like that whilst reading for a long time!! But you will also spend plenty of time smiling. I stayed up so late reading this one, written in such as way that you just had to keep reading another chapter, just to get to the next bit and find out how the story continues!! Superbly written, great flow, build up of tension and the most prefect page turner.

This story is one of the most thought-provoking, poignant and beautiful books I have read and it has gone to the top of my favourite books of the year. Shari J Ryan has excelled herself on this one!!

A MUST READ STORY, which I will be recommending to EVERYONE!

Emma's grandmother, Amelia is the rock of her family. That is, until the day Amelia suffers a stroke. At this point, Emma's life is forced to come into focus. Amelia suddenly wants Emma to find her old diary, one she wrote during the Holocaust, and a man named Charlie. Oh, and Amelia has also conned her cardiologist, Jackson into taking Emma on a date. When Emma finds her grandmother's diary, she is launched into a world of secrets from Amelia's life and horrors that she could not believe. In addition, Emma also reads about love found within the concentration camp. Amelia and Nazi Soldier, Charlie Crane find one another during the worst of times. Charlie, though a Nazi, has simply been forced to serve since a youth. In reading Amelia's story of survival and love, Emma comes to realize what she has been missing and dives into her new relationship with Jackson. However, she is now in a race against time to find the Charlie from her grandmother's past as Amelia's health worsens.

I have always loved historical fiction and I'm so glad Shari took on such a heavy topic. Inspired by her own grandmother, Shari has weaved together a story of past and present, survival and loss and heartbreak and love. I was pulled into Amelia's story with her strength and tenacity throughout the pain, hardship, loss and desperation of being separated from her family and watching those around her continuously die while she lived with help and hope from Charlie. With alternating viewpoints of Amelia's diary and Emma's blossoming love life, I was given a reprieve from the Holocaust and given a taste of Shari's specialty with Emma and Jackson, a sweet and sultry romance. Through reading Amelia's diary together, Emma and Jackson are brought together quickly, realizing that love is something that you should hold on to. With just enough hints of spice, their relationship heats up quickly. I was also engrossed by the mystery of Charlie; was he alive, had he moved on, would Emma find him on time? I was glad for Amelia's happily ever after, although it came seventy-four years late. Most of all this story this story is about remembering those who fought to survive and the power of love when we have lost all else. This is also a way to remember those who have survived this hateful time in history and to make sure we have all of their last words recorded so that we will never forget.

First… Oh my word! Have you ever seen such a beautiful cover? It’s completely fitting that this amazing cover would grace the words of Shari J. Ryan’s best book to date! I’ve read several of her other works and this stands out among the others… granted, this book is unlike any other book out there. Truly unique! Ryan writes that this is where non-fiction and fiction gather up and blur the lines of forbidden love. She really has woven this breath-taking story spanning generations of time and mixing a truly devastating past with a memorizing love story.

Ryan’s words are captivating… you WILL feel them deep in your soul. You can’t help but feel what Amelia goes through in that concentration camp… the starvation and mistreatment. It’s completely devastating to think back on that time period. Ryan goes into such explicit detail that you feel transported back into time. This could have been a tough story to follow but it wasn’t. With the multiple POVs, it was easy to understand and follow the story through the past and to the present and back and forth. It was just so perfectly weaved together that I can’t help but think that this must have been a labor of love.

Phenomenal book! I literally lost sleep wanting to finish this book. I never wanted to put it down. It was beautifully written. A forbidden romance at a time you wouldn't think there would be any romance going on! I don't always like the switching of viewpoints, but this one really worked. It flowed seamlessly since she was reading a diary. You always knew exactly which viewpoint it was, and the time period. It was very descriptive... so descriptive that I got a physical reaction to the circumstances that she was living through in the past! It was remarkable the amount of detail and how it took you there. I had tears, I felt the dread in my stomach, I smelled the smells she described the conditions smelling like. I really felt like I was there, living through it. I felt like I was the one starved and weak. Out of all the Holocaust accounts and stories I've read, this by far surpasses the creation of story I had in my mind. The current day story was just as beautiful. Emma was strong like her grandma. She didn't need anyone but she was lucky to find someone who appreciates her for who she is. If you like history and/or love stories, this is a must read!

Last Words is a true masterpiece. It is the story of a journey between a boy and a girl. Although Shari Ryan doesn’t provide much background about Charlie and Amelia’s lives before they became prisoners; she composes a story based off of facts as stated and written by her grandmother. Ryan reveals who her grandmother really was as a person and why she led a simple life.

Charlie and Amelia met during the holocaust. Neither wanted to be a part of history being made, but unfortunately sometimes we don’t get that choice. Charlie’s decision was made for him by his parents. He was to train to be a Nazi soldier. Amelia on the other hand was born a Jew. Her decision was made for her by her family’s ancestry.

As history tells us it doesn’t matter your age or your sex, if you were a Jew everyone was treated the same. Amelia and her family were captured during dinner one evening. She like many others had no idea where she would end up.

Charlie, trained to be a Nazi soldier was assigned to the same concentration camp as Amelia. They met after she was captured and their story unfolds between the pages of a beautiful love story.

Shari Ryan had me hooked from the beginning. She is such a talented author and has such a way with words. Her writing was fantastic and gave me goosebumps all over my body from the beginning of the book.

She wrote this story as a tribute to her grandmother, but also as a memory for herself. She interpreted
her grandmothers journal and wrote a true work of art.

This review is for “Last Words,” by Shari J. Ryan

Disclaimer: I am Shari's BIGGEST fan. But I am also, as I've said before, above all-- honest; if I didn't like it, I wouldn't give it a five-star review just because, or say as much about it as I am about to say. Hope you're ready...

First, let me just say that I am not sure Mrs. Ryan is capable of writing ANYTHING LESS than a 5-star story. Granted, I haven't read ALL of her books and novellas (yet), but her writing style, no matter the genre/sub-genre, is nothing short of Poetic Genius. Time & again, she proves to me that I can LOVE a story outside of my normal type of story-type picks. How? Okay, my first guess is that she is some kind of Time/Space Magician, and is just writing down events EXACTLY as she witnesses them in a parallel universe, where words flow deliciously like melted butter and descriptions and characters are intensely real and vibrantly vivid, more-so than the normal 2D ones we see here on paper-- on Earth.

BUT, I've been known to have some outlandish theories before, so I'll posit my 2nd guess on how Shari thoroughly convinces me of her worth as a Master Storyteller and leaves my heart and mind aching with desire to read more... Um, I kind of touched on it earlier... It's her writing style. I honestly cannot get over how intoxicating (it) is. In the space of just a few hours, I devoured her latest gift to the Literary World, Last Words; a novel with clear and definitive dual storylines and POV, forbidden love, unexpected joys, gut-wrenching and unfortunately realistic tragedies, and the kind of serendipitous conclusions that only happen in real life, where life is stranger and better than fiction.

Without giving too much away, here is a breakdown of what I think about Last Words, and why I'd rate it 5+ stars if I could.

Plot: Okay, so, the book has dual plotlines, alternating easily via every chapter. One storyline follows Amelia's life after capture and subsequent imprisonment in a Nazi-run prison camp during WWII. This part of the story is told via a diary(that btw, reads like a current story/as-it-happens, instead of the typical “Dear Diary” format) that Amelia has kept secret for seventy-four years from her family, including her granddaughter, Emma, whose own present-day story unfolds, as she is asked by her grandmother to read and finally learn the pain she (Amelia) has been burdened by for so long, alone. The premise of confessing your secrets while believing to be on your deathbed, is a familiar occurrence, as is the effect that learning truths and keeping those family secrets—secret, have on the perspectives of the receiver of such precious knowledge. There are no plot holes, outrageous twists, nor unnecessary deus ex machinas used to move the story along, or lead to an HEA. This book reads just as a real-life account of love, hardship, extreme pain and loss, and misguided decisions of selflessness-- should read.

Characters: Hmm, I really DON'T want to give the story away, so let me try my best to say it simply-- Amelia and Emma are REAL PEOPLE(aren't they?), as are the other supporting characters and cast members. Fully fleshed-out, with distinct voices... their story(ies) pull you in and are not easily forgotten. These people come alive and it feels as if you're watching a documentary or live Reality TV. Real. Believable. That's the kind of characters you find in an SJR book.

The Writing: Yes, I know I've touched on this- quite a bit... BUT, let's go a step further... Mrs. Ryan's prose is spellbinding and bewitching. (It) is easy to read, while being far from basic. Her words are quotable and inspiring, and thought-provoking. From the very first pages, I was drawn in-- sucked in-- possessed.

In Case You Wanted to Know: There is violence, somewhat graphically described, that was, sadly, “typical” of concentration camps during WWII/the Holocaust. There is no detailed or implied rape; mentions of it happening within the camp-yes, but none occurs within the story. I do not recall any foul language. Yes, there is sex in this novel, but in typical SJR fashion, it is tastefully described, not overly explained, and NOT the main part of the story, nor is it a recurring theme... We're talking 3 occasions that consist of maybe two paragraphs each...

Overall: Yes, I read this book prior to its release. No, I did not have to give a review unless I wanted to-- but of course, as usual, I wanted to! Overall, this story does not disappoint. Shari did her research, listened to her relatives and to her heart, and wrote a masterpiece that feels like it REALLY DID HAPPEN. A completely plausible war-love-story, that moves the reader (um, myself AND (MC)grand-daughter, Emma) to live more-- want more-- believe in more. Think of Bastian in The Neverending Story, or Harry Potter gazing into the Pensieve-- You will be pulled in and your heart will be forever changed.

Excellent is an understatement. Where do I begin? Been a fan of Shari Ryan since her first debut novel, Schasm. Her newest release, Last Words, left me speechless and a river of cleansing tears. This review will hopefully convey the magnitude of how profound the story is.

A few words to encapsulate what I felt while joining Emma, Jackson, Amelia and Charlie throughout their journey of discovery. Deeply emotional, moments of laughter (yes there is comic relief-- “Mom picks up her phone, checking for missed calls or text messages, but her phone is always on the LOUDEST volume, so I don’t see how that would be possible”--My mom did this too!)
feelings of dread, happy and sad tears and most of all never doubted the connections between the characters. A four letter word comes to mind REAL

“Honesty is what sets you free”

The written words were so descriptive, it transported me to the exact moment in time standing next to Amelia enduring the suffering while trying to survive the horrid condition of the concentration camp.
“I wanted to remind them that I was human.”
--I felt the sadness, the mistreatment and the starvation and sickness forced upon the Jewish people
“My knees began to tremble and I dropped the clipboard, creating a cloud of dirt at my feet… Papa??”
- -I breathed in the same cloud of dirt as Amelia while she was in a state of shock, I myself felt the shock and loss of blood draining from my face in this part of the book

Oh Charlie, you will be taken back by this gentleman (puts a whole new perspective on the word gentle)
“I thought maybe he was going for sainthood while the rest of his kind were running toward the gates of hell”
“I would suffocate against his lips because I would take that way of dying over anything else.”
“Be my hero”

You could definitely tell heart and soul were put into this book, just like Ryan’s other novels--but this was dynamic. To convey to the readers in such explicit detail of what the Jewish people went through during this horrific time in history all the while incorporating a fictional side of a forbidden love story was just a perfect balance. The POV’s were constructed beautifully between the past and present making it an easy transition for the reader to turn that page. And boy did I keep turning the pages to find out how all this would end – I didn’t want it to end, fell in love with each and everyone of these characters.

Woke up this morning, just wondering about them and what the future holds.
I'll leave you with this.. I was not alive while the Holocaust was in full force, but Ryan made sure no matter what --by the end, you experienced a part of what was happening and it made a lasting impression and you were changed by the end of the story.

One: Love has a way of sneaking into your heart and taking you hostage for an entire lifetime
Two: If you’re lucky enough to hold onto love, you wont have to experience the pain of having your body captivated by a soul that may or may not still be alive

THREE: READ THIS BOOK

Last Words, where Non-Fiction meets Fiction, and the lines in between are blurred by forbidden love.

Amelia - 1942:

The inside of my closet held the last bit of my freedom before I was torn from my home and shoved onto a dark train.

Our destination was even darker. “Women and children to the right. Men to the left,” they shouted at us.

Everything was taken from me, leaving only the smoke filled air, piercing screams, and soul-burning cries.

I was slowly starved and weakened to the bone, but there was a man—a Nazi—who brought me extra food. He called himself a prisoner too, but he scared me, and I wondered if he was the enemy I should fear the most.

Emma - Current Day:

My grandmother hid her past in an old diary under her bed. The tattered, brown leather book sat there for years until she asked me to find it and read her unspoken words. Now, her stories and secrets are consuming every moment of my life.

She’s dying ... and asking for a man no one in our family has ever heard of.

I never imagined a hand-written book could change my entire life, but it has. It opened my eyes to a new beginning, and I learned that love is not the unsaid word my grandmother has refused to speak. It’s an action—it’s longevity, taboo and sometimes forbidden. Do we fight for what’s wrong, or do we spend our lives searching for what’s right?

Last words were never spoken because love doesn’t stop until a heart is no longer beating.

Holy crap! Talk about an amazing read. It was brilliantly written. Emma and Jackson's story was absolutely beautifully written. Reading about Ameila's past was heartbreaking it quite difficult at times. This story brought out many emotions. A must read!

I received an ARC for an honest review.

I'm not sure I can do this book justice with my words.

This was my second read by this author and I was blown away. My emotions were all over the place. It was a hard read due to the subject matter and knowing that this truly took place and that people lost their lives because of the hate of other people. I found myself having to put it down a few times. Not because it wasn't well written but because of the emotions it brought out. Ryan did an amazing job at telling this story. It is definitely a MUST read!!

Last Words is an emotional novel. I knew it would be before I turned to the first page, and throughout this intricately woven story, author Shari Ryan plucked at my heartstrings while skillfully urging me to read on. Once I began reading, I had to know how the book was going to end. From start to finish, this book was absolutely riveting.

I found this tale to be surprisingly personal, especially the parts of the story narrated by Emma Hill. Emma comes from a strong family of women who support and care for one another. She is close to her aging but willful grandmother Amelia, and when Amelia suffers a heart attack, Emma, her mother and her aunt rally together at Amelia’s hospital bedside. I found parallels between Emma’s relationship with Amelia and the one I shared with my beloved grandmother. When Emma gets a glimpse at Amelia’s past―one that no one knows exists―I understood her desire to uncover every single detail. The fact that Amelia’s story is based on true events made this tale that much more fascinating as well as heartbreaking.

I can only imagine how difficult Last Words was for Ms. Ryan to write. It’s a captivating mix of fiction and real life, and I think she did a beautiful job of telling this story. I can’t help but think that there might be a few very important people in her life who are incredibly proud of her. I know one thing for sure; her tale will be one that sticks with me for a very long time.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I don't know where to start.....this book made me feel things I've never felt, it took me to a place I've never been. I cried, I loved, I laughed, I hurt. I truly feel like I am a better person now for having read this book and having my eyes opened to the harsh reality of life and the past.

I have an amazing relationship with my grandmother.....she is my best friend. Because of that relationship, I love that this book shows the relationship between grandmother and granddaughter and the point of view switches back and forth between those two. I love that the granddaughter gets to know her grandmother on a deeper level while learning of her past struggles and the bond between the two grows stronger.

This is by far, one of the best books I have EVER read!!

Last Words is devastatingly beautiful. Forget about forbidden romances between stepsiblings, or a teacher and student. This beautiful love affair between a young Nazi soldier and a Jewish girl that begins in a Holocaust concentration camp and spans DECADES is one of the truest forbidden romances you could ever imagine. Charlie's love for Amelia is so selfless, so pure, so beautiful, and the way that Amelia cries out for him in her dying days was heartbreaking.

As Amelia sends her granddaughter Emma to retrieve her locked-away diary, I couldn't wait to dig into the pages of the past along with Emma. The chapters alternate between the present day and Amelia's 1942 memories, but the story flows seamlessly, taking the reader on a true rollercoaster ride of emotions. Even Emma's own situation in finding love again with Jackson was tender and sweet and emotional.

Last Words is so unlike the other Shari Ryan book I've read -- and I was amazed by how she brought this story to life. Manservant had me laughing out loud constantly; Last Words had me weeping in my bed at midnight. I was so engrossed in this story, I read it over the course of a single day, staying up into the early hours of the morning to see how Charlie and Amelia's story concludes. It was well worth the book hangover.

What would be your last words? This story will will stick with me for a very long time. Brava, Shari.

Once in a blue moon an author comes along who gives you a piece of her heart and soul through her work. Last Words by Shari J. Ryan was that book for me. It wasn't just another book to read but a journey of love, immeasurable loss and unwavering hope. Amelia's story will break your heart but also lift your spirits. Her granddaughter Emma was given the gift of reading her grandma's sacred written words tucked away in a journal for years. Amelia's story is hard to hear but it must be heard. Amelia is a fighter, a survivor who lived through conditions that no person on this earth should ever have to go through. Reading Last Words will open your eyes and your heart. The three generations of women in this story will make you cry, laugh and smile. Five shining stars Shari Ryan.

Sometimes, even the toughest warriors who survive the odds and somehow escape the shadows of death, can still fall helpless and weak to the mercy of love."

Last Words pulled me in from page one, and it will stay with me for a long time. It is both heartbreaking and heartwarming; sad, and yet full of hope. More importantly, there is love.

Last Words tells the story of Amelia, a 91 year old Holocaust survivor, who is currently in the hospital due to a stroke. Through her diary, read by her granddaughter, Emma, we learn of her time as a prisoner in a concentration camp, her eventual freedom, and the secrets she has kept in her heart for more than 70 years. Through Amelia's story, Emma discovers a new way of looking at life and of living, and she learns about survival and love.

"[...] love isn't measured by time [...] if it's meant to be, it's meant to be, and there's not much you can do to change that. Life is too short and precious not to take a chance on love."

Love doesn't always make sense, but maybe it isn't meant to. Love, true and real love, is selfless, and this books shows us just how selfless and lasting it can be.

Honestly, this is a story you need to experience for yourself. I read it in one sitting, and I highly recommend it.

There are no words to try to convey to you the depth of my love for this story. Shari is such an amazing writer - she is able to capture your heart and your attention from the very first words and then she keeps you engaged and enthralled the entire time. This quite possibly is my favorite book to date from her.

This story is raw and gritty at times and then heartwarming and funny at others. There is a beautiful theme of survival and love that sees beyond hatred – a love that stares deep into the soul of another human being, finding compassion and something to keep fighting for – and a trust that goes beyond comprehension. This is love and acceptance at its most basic level and Shari’s words bring this journey to life in a stunningly beautiful way.

Told in past and present day, Shari does an amazing job of character development – you see inside the character's souls - I absolutely love the dynamic of three generations of women, the chemistry of Jackson and Emma, and of course the story of Charlie and Amelia. I laughed, I cried – no, I sobbed, and I was totally spent by the end of the book – but my bucket was full – overflowing actually. This journey with Shari is magnificent!!! I highly recommend this book!!

I've been wanting to read this story, as it seemed to be heart-wrenching, and I'm always searching for stories with substance. Last Words did not disappoint. It's actually two love stories in one, the first of love found through loss and hardship, the other through hope and healing. I've gotten a glimpse of the true horror mankind is capable of inflicting on it's own, and the strength of those who suffered, as well as the guilt of those who survived by sheer determination. But through it all, a love beyond anything I can imagine has been waiting silently. Some parts left a deep sadness, but it's a story that needs to be shared. I will be carrying the memory of Amelia and Charlie with me for a while.

This is a story about true love and sacrifice regardless of time or distance. Two of the most unlikely people find love in the midst of WWII. This story is the definition of "love conquers all.". Charlie is a Natzi soldier, tasked with rounding up the Jewish families in Prague. He finds Amelia after the most devastating action is committed to her mother right in front of her eyes. These two risk the odds and fall in love when all that surrounds them is the injustice and chaos of war. But they are torn apart before they get a chance at a life together. We are taken on a journey of their story through Amelia's diary as her granddaughter, Emma, has been given the keys to a 74 yr old secret after Amelia suffers from a stroke. But Emma is going through her own turmoil with a wasted 6 yr relationship. Just as she decides to close the door on love, Amelia's doctor wins her heart and love shows us its wonder all over again. This story is so beautiful and definitely not to be missed. For those who don't believe that love can conquer all, just pick up Last Words to find out how love always prevails.

Top Pick for 2017
If I could give this book more than five stars I would. Last Words is a story that will forever stay with me. I felt every emotion while reading this. I cried, laughed, and pushed myself through some difficult parts. I wanted to reach into my kindle and hug Amelia what an extraordinary, remarkable, courageous woman she was. I absolutely Ioved her story, and Emma’s journey alongside her grandmother. Charlie Crane the most bravest, honorable man who risks his life all in the name of love. An eye opener to the tragedy that occurred during the Holocaust. A beautiful, powerful, emotional story everyone needs to read. Shari thank you for sharing your words and your grandmothers.

First a warning, keep the tissues handy because you're going to need them. The emotional undertow is deep and it is strong. This book takes on some really big subjects: love, loss, life, death, second chances, redemption. And they're all handled with such a deft touch that while you know you're jumping into the deep end, you really don't realize just how deep the subject matter is until you're in over your head. I'm sitting here looking at the blinking cursor and realizing I haven't quite recovered from the book yet. I don't know if I ever will. I'm wondering how do I put into words what I just went through. I'm sure I'll be numb once the tears stop. Right now I'm shaking, it had so much impact on my emotions. Just like the way Emma reads her grandmother's diary, and for many of the same reasons, this book would be better taken in small bites than the single-sitting I did it in. The love stories of Emma and her grandmother, Amelia, are profound and moving. And that's about all I know I can say without giving away all of the most important parts of the story.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book.

Absolutely gorgeous! Description that swallows you up and allows the reader to get lost in the moment! Characters that you want to know, want in your life, and in your family. In case you hadn’t already guessed, I really loved this book.

Shari J. Ryan effortlessly weaves together a story that spans time, generations, and countries. She perfectly balances the light with the dark. So, although there are very serious subjects at the story’s roots, it is paired perfectly with laughter, humor and love. The seriousness of the subject matter is not lost, but it does not swallow the reader leaving them to wallow.

The characters in Last Words are loveable and relatable. Grams was by far my favorite, with Emma following in a close second. The two women complement each other on a variety of levels. As one reviews her life leading her to where she is now, the other is trying to grow into the woman she truly wants to be. In a side note, Grams is hilarious and I would love to have her as my grandmother.

I highly recommend this book. For those that are fans of historical fiction, it is definitely a must. But, truthfully there is something for every reader in this book. Love, family, adventure, loss, and growth are just a few topics this book masterfully covers. Shari J. Ryan has crafted a beautiful piece of writing that everyone should take the time to read and enjoy.

When Shari told me about a book she was writing, I got all excited. When I started Last Words, I had no idea what I was in for..I experienced every emotion you can think of.. I was a blubbering idiot through most of it.. Why?
Last Words takes you on a time travel through history. Amelia and Charlie meet during one of the most horrific events in the world, the Holocaust. A forbidden love. One between Amelia, who was a prisoner of the camp. Charlie was a soldier. I am not going to say to much about their story. This is one you need to read and experience on your own. There is so much to this story.

Last Words is unlike anything I have ever read before. I have never read anything so emotional. Shari's words are just break taking. She captures you from page one and doesn't let go. This book has stuck with me, even till today.

2 love stories wrapped in one book. 4 characters who thought they would never find love again.

This book deserves way more than 5 stars. 10 stars for one of the best book written ever!!!!

I don't even know where to start, I am totally speechless. Last Words is a 5 star book and a must read for everyone. I just couldn't put it down. I have read a lot of books lately where they get really boring and repetitive - this book was the complete opposite. I think it is Shari's best book yet and I encourage everyone to read it.

I was given an arc for an honest review and I can honestly say it is one of the best books I have read this year. I'm not going to tell you what the book is about - the blurb does that. I also don't want to give away anything which is why my reviews are just loved, liked or didn't like. This one is LOVED ?

I Voluntarily Reviewed an Avanced Reader Copy of this book!

To the author that broke my soul. You Shari J Ryan have somehow crawled inside my soul with your words and cracked it. Thank you for that.

I was so nervous to read this story because I knew the outcome would be the same. However, this author has given me so much enjoyment that I had to give it a,real chance. That real chance kept me up until 6 am in the morning crying. Happy tears. The words and characters are so authentic and genuine that I felt like I was right there living it. It takes a phenomenal artist with a natural craft to reach the heights that Mrs. Ryan did. Thank you for sharing your beautiful craft with the rest of the reader nation. I am a blessed reader because of you!

I love how shari put words on her books. She always know how to put reader in alert and make them down at the same time. She know how to make beautiful words to a book with so much full of feelings. This book is one of the best book i read. I can't even stop crying till the end. Knowing what love's supposed to means in this book. Love is so much more than a word. So much meaning that we cant undertand but Shari always know how to write the meaning of love in all her books. This book is one of the best. I wish i could find someone like Charlie someday and be the strongest girl like Amelia or maybe a great person like Emma who found a perfect gentleman like Jackson.
I never read about the Holocaust but in this book i know how hard to live in that time. This book is a history and romance at the same time.

This is one of the most touching and beautiful stories I've read so far this year and my new personal favorite by this amazing author and I'm so glad that I was fortunate enough to read this amazing story! Emma is a character that I feel we can all relate to in some way and to watch her discover her grandmother's history and go through all of the emotions associated with that was quite an experience for me. I loved every single second of reading this heartwarming story and will be recommending for everyone I know to read this one. This is a must read for sure! I reviewed this for Reviews from the Heart.

There is absolutely no amount of amazing words I could possibly use, in any language, to describe Shari Ryan's new release Last Words and still do this deeply moving, thought provoking love story justice.

Last Words moved me to the brink of tears, cultivated fear and burned deep in my heart with the our pouring of love it provoked.

Ryan's story was an unexpected one in Nazi German times. Two souls finding love in the most tragic of places. Ryan poured every stitch of her heritage into this emotional novel. By doing so, she has written her best novel to date.

Last Words is one of those books you must absolutely read for yourself to feel the strength and emotion crafted by Ryan. Last Words is special, a different story of love demanding to readers to be read. Don't miss out on this opportunity to read something that'll change your perception of true love.

There are no words to correctly portray how this book has made me feel. This is honestly one of the most beautifully written, captivating, and heart-felt books I have ever read! I am a huge fan of Shari's - but I'm now wishing I could rate this book higher than 5 stars, because it is some of the best writing she has ever done! I'm not going to lie - I cried like a baby, quite a few times - but I just could not put this book down...I needed to know how it was going to end, but once I got there - I was so sad to say goodbye to the characters. Last Words takes us back and forth from the present to the past, a terrible time in history, during WWII, in the Holocaust. It was very hard to read about this time of history, but the love captured within the words throughout the past and present, helps tie this story together beautifully. 10 stars, an absolute MUST READ!

Last word by Shari Ryan

How do I start reviewing a book that you love so much? That left you speechless, broken and tearing for this amazing story of love, surviving and fighting for the love of your life. I read heart of time and it was an amazing story as well. She never disappoints me. I can pick a book from Shari Ryan without reading the blurb. Every word, every character touched me incredibly. Each character has their own story. Amelia’s story broke my heart a million times but Charlie mend it with his love, caring and protecting Amelia risking his own life. This story is about “never giving up” time will decide. Is a story of true love. Sometimes you need to choose between freedom or love. What would you choose?

Again Shari Ryan left me wanting more of her amazing writing.

This was the most amazing book I think I've ever read. I didn't know much about the holocaust and the things that happen and this book told about it and made you feel for the Jews that were taken and put into concentrations camps.
This was the story of Amelia, who suffer a great deal during her kidnapping and stay in the camp. During this time she meets Charlie, a soldier who helps her and give her food to help her survive.
Amelia needs her granddaughter Emma to help her find Charlie before the time comes for her to leave this earth.
Emma finds her diary and learns the story of her grandmother and everything she gone through and her secrets she wants to keep.
This is a great book and I highly recommend this book!!!!
Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!!
Happy reading!!!

Oh My! What a Heartrending Story this was. This was a very emotional story. When I started reading this, I thought it would make me cry but the things that happened (which were true) made me VERY ANGRY! A Grandmother secretly has her granddaughter read her Diary to find out the truth of her young life. The ending made me a little more joyful for this Family though. A Great story about a Horrific Time in The History of The Jewish Community. This was definitely a page-turner that is one of My 2017 Favorites.

If I could give this book 100 stars, I would. It was such a touching story that was also based on true history. It approached a subject that many authors wouldn’t write about, the Holocaust, and made it a story with heart. I especially appreciated the way the story seamlessly flowed between current time and the past by using a journal. I think it adequately gave insight into what happened in that horrible part of history, but there was also a deeper, more hopeful message. Even in a time of great darkness, love and general care for others will always exist. While many suffered the pain of their own torture or the torture of loved ones, the survivors still had love in their hearts. I think this is a valuable message, especially in our world today.

Shari J Ryan has written a story so unique and soul touching. While I really enjoyed the present story, I was eager to get back to the past. Shari's words were a DeLorean time machine and I was Marty McFly ready to hop in. I felt all the emotions while reading this book. Last words taught us that during tradgey there can be hope. This is a very unique love story set during WWII, a German guard who falls in love with an inmate at a concentration camp. The story is told through Amelia, the holocaust survivor and her granddaughter. I thought it was well written and loved the characters. I think it's important to note that all the German soldiers may have felt as Charlie did, but they were robbed of having a choice. And to the author, I am quite certain your grandmother is more than proud of you, and I would not ever doubt it. I loved the book. Thank you for sharing your memories the best way that you could. LAST WORDS
BY SHARI RYAN

What a fan-tast-ic book by Shari!! One of my favorite books of 2017!!

It was so down to earth, very descriptive, very detailed, very emotional book.

There are 2 points of view, Amelia and Emma.

Amelia, who is ninety- one years old, runs into some health problems. Seventy-four years ago she was a survivor of the Holocaust.

Emma who is 28, Amelia is her grandmother. Amelia keeps asking for a guy named Charlie. No one knew this person was. Amelia requested Emma to find a special journal under her bed. Emma finds it and starts reading it to her.

You will not regret on purchasing this book! VERY GOOD!!

This is my first time reading about the Holocaust and Shari did an amazing job writing this story. What a love story of the truest kind. It grabs you from the beginning until the very end. I love how she told about Amelia's life journey through her journal and she trusted her granddaughter Emma with it. It was just so full of emotions that I had both tears of sadness and of joy...I couldn't put it down until the very end...I absolutely loved reading it and I really hope you give this book a chance...One book I hope to own on my shelf. Thank you Shari for this incredible read... Especially about the journey through the holocaust and to the present day...
It will leave you breathless.

A story of the horrors in life but of the beauty that can be born from the ashes. Follow this amazing story of life, love and perseverance. It is a story of heartbreak and fear but also a story that speaks of unending love that can last a lifetime. This is by far a must read for 2017!❤️❤️

I absolutely loved this book. It expertly weaves a contemporary romance between Emma and Jackson, her grandmother's cardiologist, with Emma's grandmother Amelia's story of forbidden love in a World War 2 concentration camp.

I admittedly enjoy reading about that era. I feel it is important that we never forget what happened. A warning though, Amelia's story does include some violence and heartless situations that are at time difficult to read and may not be suited to some readers.

Overall I found it is a story of persistence and survival and of that type of once in a lifetime love that she shares with Emma mostly through her diary. The ending is a happy twist of fate.

I want to be totally honest. I would never have picked this book to read. Not because of the author I have read other books by Shari ( Man Servant & The Heart series). I would not have read this book because parts of it take place in 1942. I would also have missed one of the most soul touching books I have ever read. This book grabs you and takes you through hell. The Author tells you that this is " where reality meets fiction". For me this is the best " Story of Love". Love is a gift to give it, to receive it, to experience it. Unconditional love? It doesn't matter if a person had it for a minute or for years they had everything.
This book will be with me for a long time. Thank you Shari J Ryan.

I was unsure about reading a book with such a heavy (true) subject being a large focus. I'm not the biggest fan of tearjerkers. I knew I would be emotionally challenged since this is based around a real horrific tragedy (The Holocaust). Even if the characters weren't real.

And I was sad. And I did cry. But it was so worth it. This book was well written, heartfelt, and made me happy to have had the experience. Shari Ryan is a granddaughter of someone that was a survivor. She was able to take a sad family history that I'm sure she's thought about her whole life and pour it into this beautiful story. I'm so glad I read it!

Last Words by Shari J. Ryan literally brought me to tears. Emma's grandmother Amelia is a Holocaust survivor. When she takes sick and has to be hospitalized, she asks Emma to find and read her diary. It contained many secrets of her survival she was never able to voice to her family. This book showed how everlasting and pure love can come from something so tragic and horrible. There are not enough words to describe how touching and moving this novel truly is. It was just a beautifully written story that captivates you the whole way through. It deserves a much greater rating than 5/5.

Such a tragic and beautiful story of all the opposites in life, love flourishing in the midst of hate, courage triumphing over fear, goodness conquering evil.
I loved the seamless flow between present day and world war 2 holocaust.

Thank you for this heartfelt, and as we learn in the author’s afterword, very personal story.

An enjoyable marriage of present day life, focusing on Emma and Jackson, with the past lives of Amelia and Charlie. A forbidden relationship in an era that such a relationship could endanger your life. The flashbacks, told within the confines of multiple journal entries, gave the reader small glimpses into the lives of Amelia and Charlie. The reader saw how a bond formed and grew in a most undesirable place. The dialogue between Emma and Jackson was engaging and funny. Jackson was my favorite character. I highly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.

I am not usually reading this genre but I am glad I did this time. It is a nice read with a story line and plot that I liked. To write about the Holocaust can go both ways. But this one amazed and surprised me positively. A romantic lovestory that you just have to read. It caught me from first to last chapter and has so many twists and emotional ups and downs. The chemistry is over the top. The second chance love story is unique and the author has just nailed it.

This is one of those books that leaves you reeling - it was hard to pick up another book after finishing this one. I loved the concept of this story - the diary wrecked me emotionally. I love a story where you learn things from history, good and bad. Amelia and Charlie's story was heartbreaking and I loved that it was Emma and Jackson who got to feel the diary's words and learn from it. The end was perfectly written and even a little unexpected.

This one is most certainly worth the read and I will be encouraging friends to pick it up!
