Thoroughly enjoyed the series with its twists and turns the characters go through. Love the idea of the Eldran. Was a little disappointed in the final fight scene, but still enjoyed it. It seemed to go by too fast.

Wonderfully written book. Most of my burning questions from the first 3 books were answered. This series gave me so many historical feels. I also may have cried a few times. Im ready for the next series!

This authors use of description is absolutely wonderful. They set the scenes so vividly without the length others would take. I have enjoyed reading the journey of Chloe and Dion and their world. I like this book much more than book 3. I cant wait to read more from the author. There are a few things I wish ended slightly differently, and definitely wish there was more romance and relationship development between Chloe and Dion. **Spoiler Alert*** Wish Kargan would have stayed true to his character development, get eaten by a dragon, and Javid become king of kings. The whole Kyphos story was a group of people too many and to have him take down the ancient evil solo, just makes everyone fighting the dragons and the whole war look pathetic. I don't know I'd I misread but I thought there were about 150 red dragons in the beginning, then there were battles and they were killed one by one and by the dozens, but then at the last battle theres suddenly 200 dragons? ***
Overall a great series!

Dear James, you should be extremely proud of this wonderful adult series. The story was exceptionally from beginning to end. The characters were very well constructed as was the map of the story world. Congratulations on an excellent, exciting and fascinating story and setting. I highly recommend reading this series to anyone interested in reading a great story that will take you away to a fantastic era of Magic and beasts. Thank you James for a wonderful adventure.

Mr Maxwell writes like Robert Jordan in his descriptive character building. His attention to detail when setting the scenes and building up moments in the book jeep you reading. I'm finding the next series of his to read now.

People learn who a person is by their body language, tone of voice, how they dress or what they like. An author doesn't have that option. He must write his book in such a way to capture the hearts and minds, or imagination if you will, in how he formulates his words. He doesn't have the luxury of observation.
For those of you who have not heard of James Maxwell must surely find out who this man is.
The Shifting Tides, four book series is James's way of introducing himself. He has a style, an eloquence to his wording that sets him apart from many authors. His wording flows like water through the pages, giving life to the characters by the way he describes them, tells you their status in the plot. He is able to provide description far ahead, from the past and within the present. I found his style very comfortable to read. It took some time for book four to surface, but when it did, I bought it and picked up right where I remember I was. The first three left that God of an impression on me.
This series is about eight different cities/societies encompassing a large sea that's very close to landlocked. On one side live a people similar to the Greek of our world. There are three cities within sailing distant that share various commodities that drive a civilization. One grows grain, one processes metal, one governs and so on. In the wilds of this land are creatures of a human-nature. On the opposite side of the sea are warriors, brigands, thieves and dictators.
I sense you, my fellow readers can spot the plot growing before your eyes by this review. I don't want to say more for fear of giving too much away. James has taken different facets of our society, given it a twist and created a fantastical series that will be enjoyed by all ages. It has the depth of contemplation, the evils of the sick mind, the power-hungry, the subservient.
So if your looking for a good, entertaining and thought-provoking set of books to read, you've come to the right place. Enjoy, I truly did!
