Great extension to the poster. I just got this book and already use it a lot. It is easier to identify a wood to use in a project and then go find it then to constantly search the hardwood lumber yards trying to find a a species for a project. I find the book well organized and easy to use as a reference.

its OK. Good pictures. But the whole point of this is to have an index. Unless you care about hardness and strength (I don't very much) the only way to find a wood with the characteristics you want is to flip page by page all the way through taking notes. Its clear the author is an engineer and not a woodworker or he would realize that woodworkers are more interested in other characteristics. When I build a small box with an exotic and super expensive wood I really don't care how hard it is and how much weight I can put on it. His website has the same problem in not being able to sort woods species by actually useful characteristics. This is very sad because the information is there, it just can't be sorted by in any useful way. The guy is fixated on hardness and modulus of elasticity.

A bit lacking in properties of some of the woods. I looked up Atlantic white cedar, and found little. I was hoping for information on uses, how it takes a finish, how it machines. Also, the pricing comments were incorrect. It is available here at very competitive prices to SYP. There are better sources available on the internet. It does have pretty pictures though, but it would be difficult to identify the wood by them.

A little disappointed , it isn't very often one has the equipment to magnify end grain 10X power to identify wood. I would like photos of tree bark to compare instead. Seems to me it would be a lot more useful .
