Could not s top reading this true-life ordeal. Alistair is a survivor of the worst that a man can do to another human being. This is a must read for we must -- like the holocaust -- never forget what really happens in war.

Alastair Urqhart died in October this year (2016).
How this young 19 years old young man survived the many horrors he lived of the infamous death railway, to Nagasaki is just plain unbelievable. A testimony of a time nobody wants to see again.

Yes now days a forgotten story, yet millions of solders and civilians suffered or were massacred. An incredible story, well told by a man of great personal strength. The evil of man is beyond understanding.

Amazing story of survival and the realities of the life of a POW held by the Japanese during World War II. Although my father was not a prisoner of war, he fought in the Pacific theatre during WWII until he was wounded in hand to hand combat. He didn't speak about his war years until toward the end of his life and the stories were very similar to some the author tells. They haunted him until the day he died. A very compelling read.

This book will have you enthrawled and you will capture the pain and frustrations that the Allies suffered at the hands of a brutal and merciless enemy. A book you won't put down until you know the outcome. I salute with a great deal of reverence the men who fended Singapore.

While not detailed in the intimacy of the gory things that occurred, it still gives the reader enough information to know what happened to the unfortunate WWII POWs. Maybe we treat others better than these me were treated their own.

Intriguing and memorable, would be 5-star with me except quite a bit of the material seemed repetitious. But then, I suppose the horrible treatment he endured considered the "real thing" repetitious, too!

The torture he, and other prisoner's endured by the Japanese, were
Inhumane. How the kept going day after day, surviving to the end of the war is amazing. I was interested in learning the fate of the Japanese officers in charge of prisoner camps.

Alastair writes of the unimaginable but very real horror faced by POWs in the Far East. In a world dominated by the whistling men in the Movie, Bridge over the River Kwai, he gives a truthful look at what they endured. Angry yet not controlled by his anger. A true hero.

This Scottish author was a survivor of Japanese slave labor camps. He bravely shared his story. Anyone interested in WWII, perseverance in the face of cruelty, PTSD, and the human condition, should read this book.

Everyone should read this autobiography of sacrifice and strength of will. Truly Mr. Urquhart is a hero and an example of what one person can go through in war and yet survive. Do we still have men like this today?
