Wow. What a roller-coaster ride through Detective Austin Glass's life as he goes to a dive of a diner to meet an informant, becomes obsesses with a pair of bunny slippers on a busboy and then all hell breaks loose, with his case, his career, his love-life, and just about everything and everyone's life around him, too!

If you like snarky, wise-cracking heroes who actually do have feelings buried deep down somewhere, (he's smart as well as being a smart-ass), then you'll love Austin. OK, so he goes gay-for-you over Mr. Bunny-slippers, but he has his reasons for this remarkable bit of self-discovery at the ripe age of 26. And if you think you're in for a simplistic tale of sweet love, don't hold your breath. This is a fantastic, complex tale tale that explodes as magnificently as Austin's life. There is a cast of fantastic characters with tons of back-story--and Austin and Rabbit's shaky nascent love-life can't get terribly far when things (including bullets) are flying at them from all angles.

It's unexpected, funny, moving, exciting, fast-paced... and a bunch of other superlatives and adjectives that I won't bore you with right now. Just--if you think this sounds even half-way interesting--BUY IT and READ IT! It's one of the best books I've read in ages--and I read hundreds of books. This was just brilliant stuff, and I sincerely hope-hope-hope there is more where this comes from, because I am so there!!!!

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 6/10

PROS:
- Austin's narrative voice is dry and sarcastic and quite funny. His and Peter's initial interactions are priceless--not just the snarky things they say to each other, but also Austin's simultaneous attraction to Peter and confusion about his feelings. (see cons also) And the humor continues throughout the book, without ever really letting up.
- The author manages to convey an equal level of maturity in her 20-year-old and 26-year-old protagonists. Austin may be college-educated and have a decent amount of experience with police work, but his naiveté about a lot of things puts him on an even keel with Peter, who is much younger but is hardened and streetwise.
- There's a lot of buildup in the creation of sexual tension. Alexander does a very good job of establishing how distracted Austin is anytime Peter is near him.
- The plot is complicated, with an intricate backstory (which gets a bit dense at times, to be frank). But this is not one of those stories in which a half-hearted attempt at a plot is thrown in to add meat to the romance. The plot is a major factor here, and it's good.

CONS:
- Every new scene begins with a little heading or title, and they drove me crazy. Some of them are pointless--like, they're just one word, like a character's name. Others are amusing (example: "Douchebag of the Year Award"), but they often give away one of the funniest or most meaningful lines in the coming scene and thus lessen the line's effect considerably. About a quarter of the way through the book, I started attempting to ignore them because they were annoying me so much.
- As much as Austin and Peter's verbal sparring amused me, there's a healthy dose of lying and falseness and hostility to the relationship, which made me distrust it overall. Peter is a master at manipulation, and Austin is cocky and arrogant and quite a jerk sometimes. I didn't hate either of them, but sometimes their actions and/or words were very off-putting.
- The entire book is in first person from Austin's point of view, except for a single scene from Peter's perspective, told in third person, and in present tense, 40 percent of the way in. That scene seemed terribly incongruous to me.
- Through the whole book, we get hints and teases and mentions of a particular development in the characters' sex lives...and then the book ends without showing it to us.

Overall comments: This story is full of interesting characters, some likeable and some not; even most of the ones who appear for no more than a couple of pages seem real. I was interested in the story as I was reading it, but I felt a bit let down by the ending, and I've now forgotten large chunks of it, just a little over a week after reading it.

I rarely bother to write reviews for the romance novels I read, but this one is worth it. In fact, it's so good that I have trouble believing it's really a debut novel. Surely this is actually an experienced author writing under a new pseudonym?

Whatever the case, this book is pretty terrific. The main characters are outrageous, the plot is outrageous, the humor is outrageous, and the romance is heart felt. The humor had me smiling and laughing throughout, the plot nearly gave me a heart attack at the climax, and the romance had my heart aching in all the right ways. What more could a reader ask for? Well....we COULD ask for a much better proof reader (and I'll be happy to offer my services here if anyone is interested in improving the next book....), but that is a small complaint next to the many fine qualities of this story.

For $2.99 (or $5.99, or probably $8.99), you really can't do much better in the cop/mystery/adventure/humor type of gay romance than this book. I'll definitely be keeping track of this author to see what she comes up with next!

What annoyed me most about "Shattered Glass" by Dani Alexander (who is a woman, I think?) was the constant, perpetual, never-ending bickering, arguing and nit-picking dialogue between the 2 major characters, Austin and Peter in this gay romance/police story. I simply detested reading their ridiculous argumentative style of interacting.

What annoyed me second most was the book's length. It should have been edited to about three-fourths (or less) of its current length. The extra words and pages were unnecessary and often simply repetitive. I was happy the book ended, not because of a clever wrap up of the details - just thankful it was over. There was no joy in finishing the book, but there was relief.

Nonetheless the story was a good one, engrossing and quite well-written. The characters were clear and consistently themselves, even if relying on stereotypes a good deal of the time and a bit too preachy about the horrors of gay life - workplace prejudice and all that. That sort of stuff is in fact passé now in most civilized places. It no longer is compelling substance in a novel.

The tale takes place in about 2 weeks in the lives of a group of people who are involved in and end up solving or dying in a cops-on-the-take episode with heinous criminals. During this time, 26 year old Austin, a cop, crashes out of the closet, leaving splintered door and door jamb debris behind him and falls in love with Peter, a mysterious, perhaps shady, 20 year old very experienced young gay man who is a central figure in a crime being solved. In the end, Peter is the more mature. There were lots of funny moments.

I give the author a 4+ for story creativity, even if it was too complicated and way too long, a 3+ for writing, and barely a 2 for creating characters who, while lovable, were basically annoying and hardly admirable in their inability to interact without stupid arguments. Enough of the yelling, already!
So, overall, it's a 3.40, rounded down to a 3.

Great read, great price! Austin's voice had me giggling on the train and the pace had me holding my breath at times. I'm essentially a crime reader and a bit of an occasional romance reader and I found the crime writing right up there, often with crime + romance stories one or the other style suffers, but not this fun (not so little) read. I loved the titles of each chapter...actually there wasn't much not to love! As with a lot of Kindle books a little bit of extra editing wouldn't have gone astray, but for this price I'm not concerned. I'm looking forward to the sequels.

This story was definitely more than I expected from the blurb. It was an elaborate story about finding yourself, but I'm sure it was more than that. I figured out the missing puzzle piece early on, which was somewhat disappointing, but overall, it was a good story, with a complex cast of characters. The ending feels as if there should be another book to continue where this one left off, although I'm not sure if there is or will be. I will definitely check for other titles from Dani Alexander to find out. Very much worth the read or listen!

I cannot count how many times I have purchased "gay" fiction only to be disappointed by the juvenile attempt at writing. This book however was a delight to read. The characters and plot were well done and held my interest until the end. I immediately checked for other books written by the same author. Well worth the cost.

What a fantastic book. Loved, loved, loved the characters. Loved the romance. Loved the sarcasm & wit that peppered the dialogue from Austin. This was a fantastic suspense/thriller. A brilliant 'coming out' story & above all a delightful romance. What more could you want from a book...except maybe a sequel? This is a definite keeper.

I don't usually bother to write reviews, but this book was so good I just had to gush.

The book description doesn't really do the plot justice. I went into it expecting your typical sex-heavy/plot-light romance story, and I'll admit, the pairing of a detective and a prostitute intrigued me. But it's so much more than that. The plot is complex and takes so many twists and turns, you're never sure what's real or what will be uncovered next. It's a romance, but it's also a mystery, and the two blend together quite well.

But the characters were my favorite part. The narrator's internal monologue is completely hilarious, I cracked up so many times throughout the book. The dialogue is crisp and witty, and each character has a very unique and well-developed personality. It would have been so easy to typecast them, but the author really creates real, loveable people. Even the secondary characters are crucial and well-developed. Watching the whole cast overlap and interact is so much fun, I came to really care about all of them by the end.

The author's style was funny and engaging and really easy and enjoyable to read. First person narration can be a tricky thing to do well, but she nailed it. I love her humor and wit, and hope to see a lot more from her, with these characters or others.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read and could not put the book down. It's a great cop drama, coming out story and romance novel. I appreciated the extended length for such a low price as well. I immediately went looking for another book by this author only to be disappointed there are not any yet. I cannot wait for her next book.

WOW! This was definitely the best story I've read in a long, long time!!! Austin Glass is a straight cop who is engaged to a great gal (Angelica). One problem, he finds himself obessessed with a red-headed busboy (who wears bunny slippers at work), who isn't what he seems to be. In fact, Peter isn't even gay! He IS a former prostitute and SO much more (as we continue to find out as the story unfolds). When Austin comes out to his dad (a high powered lawyer) at the police station it leads to a whole series of crazy events that makes you want to read the next chapter and then next (even when it's WAY past your bedtime)! I can't recommend it highly enough. The surprises just keep coming... no pun intended. :-) I can't wait for a sequel, because I just love these characters!!!

This is a treasure - truly funny, with a real (if over-the-top) plot, sharp characterization, and great dialogue. I laughed out loud. A lot. It got a little out of hand near the end with the mobster stuff, but I'd recommend it to anyone.

I'm really impressed with this author. I RARELY enjoy books written in the first person, but this was so well done that I forgot all about that small detail. Very witty and smart characters. I just loved all the characters. The dialogue is excellent. What a great price for a full length novel. Another thing I RARELY do is re-read books (which makes for a very expensive pastime!!), but I'll definitely re-read this one. I'm looking forward to more books by this author.

Some books are produced to be skimmed and others are written to be read. This is definitely one of the latter. The storyline is interesting, the characters are well developed, the writing is very polished and it's a full length novel.

Two more books are scheduled to come out this year and I can't wait. Hopefully, they will meet the bar that's been set.

This book was so unexpectedly good. It wasn't perfect as I would have liked various elements of the story to be more fleshed out, but the characters were so compelling. They drew me into their world and made me want more. I couldn't recommend this more to someone looking for story and romance as opposed to pure erotica.

Everyone seems to 5 star this book, kinda irritated me in some ways. First, am not chasing after someone who had done some of the things he did and second,I like Glass but he was ^&**% whipped if you know what I mean. Have you ever had someone chase you like that, not realistic.

Straight to the point, the story surrounding the characters was exceptional! I really enjoyed the crime aspect of it. So much in fact that if this book was only about that, I would have given it 4 stars.

However... those f**king bunny slippers! I hate them so much! Why? I wished Austin never saw them and that we could've gotten with him crime stopping escapades.

If you don't like indecisive, rash, immature people, then you will have a strong dislike for Austin Glass. He is so d**kwhipped that he made some of the most ignorant decisions I have ever read in fiction. Ever. I have not experienced the whole true love thing, but I highly doubt that jeopardizing all that you are (not meaning his sexuality, but his career etc.) for one person is really a sign of love. Then he was sure of love, just raging lust *eyeroll*.

I know it is fiction, but damn Austin is pathetic. Sigh. I really wanted to love this book.

I hate writing a review that goes against the majority opinion b/c it makes me question myself, and feel the need to justify my opinion a lot more, which means I have to spend a lot of time thinking about a book I really disliked! And this book does not deserve my mental energy. But I'm writing a review so other people know what they are getting into.

The problems
1. The length. Insanely long and not alot happens. Maybe I wouldn't have noticed the length if there had been more emotional depth but everything was one external event after another.

2. The characters. I personally don't think a busboy who wears slippers to work and is pierced to high heaven and reeks of cigarette smoke is going to inspire love at first sight in a hetero man. Call me crazy! As for Peter, he says he prefers women and appears to be using Austin for just about all of the book. And Austin really has no respect for peter, he'd just really like some sex. Which made them both very unlikable.

3. The sex. Oh wait! What sex? You know, if the premise is that the main character wants to bone another character and they have no physical interaction before 150 pages that is a problem! This is not erotica. And when they do 'do it' it's kind of yucky. I really wish she had not told me over and over again how austin keeps sweating through his suits. OVer and over his clothes are sticking to him, his apartment is freezing because he's sweating all the time...that is a bad character trait to focus on.

4. The editing. The flashbacks. The chapter titles. All were distracting and seemed amateurish. She didn't know what to cut, and clearly no one told her to get aggressive with her delete button. There was a lot of backstory and filler that was totally unnecessary.

I would highly recommend people skip this and read Marie Sexton instead.

As I read "Shattered Glass" I realized I was making a list of all the things I didn't like about it.
If this is the best book a reader has read "all year" it would be because it is only the end of February.
I really really wanted to like the main character, Austin Glass, but he continually proved himself to be shallow, arrogant,immature...the list goes on. He was schizophrenic! One moment he would be a complete ass, only to redeem himself and then follow it with even worse behavior. I had a hard time believing the love interest (Peter) would stick around--I wanted him to run screaming the other way and quick find another boyfriend.
The chapter titles were unnecessary, one would hope readers would be bright enough to figure out what is happening without hints, too cutesy.
Lastly, there were mistakes in formatting/editing for the kindle and I found them distracting. Might not have bothered me so much if it had been better written.

I don't like to like negative reviews, I understand how it can effect an author and as I said, I wanted to enjoy this book.
I would consider buying another from this author as long as I read a sample first.

I bought the book thinking with mostly positive reviews, it should be readable at least. It's not. The title says it all - this book is just like shattered glass. It is painfully sharp. I read 35% of the book, according to Kindle stats. I still have no real idea who is the protagonist or if there even is one. There is no "good guy" in this book and nothing of interest in the characters so poorly presented. I could not provide a description of either Peter or Austin at this point nor could I pick them out of a line up unless Austin had his badge or Peter had the bunny slippers. There is no interaction between the two main characters that is not angry, derisive, mean spirited, or lies.

With a third of the story finished, I have no interest or desire to continue. I'm not sure what the plot is because the actions seem to jump randomly from one aspect to the next.

Shattered Glass has high comedy value that keep me laughing and snickering throughout the read. Austin is a total riot and his mouth is dirty as fu@k. I have problem imagining him, as a police officer, blurting out the most inappropriate response all the time. And he aspire to become a FBI agent? Puhleez.

Austin came to a realization that he might be gay at 26, when he was obsessed with the guy, Peter who wore bunnies slippers. Austin don't care that Peter is a male prostitute, a liar or a manipulative b@stard. He don't even care that his career is down the drain. All he care is that he must have Peter! Well, on one hand I totally adored his devotion and possibly love for Peter, on the other hand, I think he is a total nut case.

Peter's predicament can be easily sympathized. He do what he gotta do to keep his family alive and safe. I have no grip towards him, even though I long to see Peter do something for Austin, instead of the whole story revolves around Austin trying to help Peter's family one way or another.

The mystery surrounding the case totally befuddled me. There are just too many things going on that I feel dizzy trying to piece the information together. There are also too much crooked cops out there!

The biggest complaint I have is that this romance is a fu@king tease. With so much crass and crude joke, so many references to c0ck and fu@k and @ss and h0le, there is no an@l s3x! Sorry, I just can't accept my m/m read to be devoid of actual penetrative s3x unless is a YA. Peter is a male prostitute and I didn't even get to see how he perform in the bedroom. What a shame!

Detective Austin Glass doesn't really take life seriously. He's never really had to. He has a rather large trust fund for financial security. He's a successful detective with his sights set on the FBI. And he has a beautiful fiancée. Things are sailing smoothly down Austin's chosen track.

But when Austin is waiting in a diner for an informant who never shows up, things change. That change comes in the form of a busboy in bunny slippers who steals and holds Austin's attention. He takes over Austin's thoughts, intriguing and confusing him in ways he never thought possible. But the innocent looking busboy comes with a whole lot of baggage--probably just about as much as Austin carries around on his own.

In no short time at all, Austin finds his whole world changing. The challenge Peter provides for him is more than just a physical one. It's mental, it's emotional, and it might be exactly what he needs. Even if there are moments when his "better judgment" might want to tell him otherwise...

--

Not all relationships start out like fairy tales tell us they do. Sometimes they build from a whim we don't understand. Sometimes we want to simultaneously chase after and run from the person who stands before us. And sometimes it's the challenge of breaking down walls that draws us to someone in the first place.

Austin and Peter are a great example of all those things. Fighting for the person you're attracted to while fighting against that attraction sounds like it shouldn't be possible. Those things should be mutually exclusive, right? Not at all. And the tension and banter that results is entertaining and heartening to read. Sometimes you just have to be willing to get over yourself long enough to realize someone might want you for exactly who you are...

This is my first book from this author, and I'm so glad I discovered it. And the ending--well, I know I can't wait to pick up book two!

SHATTERED GLASS was one of those books that everyone had read but me, so while I was on my M/M binge read, I thought I would give this one a shot. If you’re a fan of quirky characters and writing (something like Josephine Myles) you’ll probably like this.

What stood out to me as special was the way in which Alexander writes. It takes a more fun approach with the funny subtitles within each chapter. I’ve never seen this before and while it took a bit to get used to, it brings a lot of character to an already fun and exciting book. I definitely enjoyed reading it.

Austin is a straight – or so he thinks. He has a wonderful job and fiancée and seems to get along with her well. There’s nothing wrong to make him unhappy or want to get away from the life he already has. But when he stumbles upon this young man, he is entranced. There’s no other word for it. Something grips him so hard that Austin falls into a mental tailspin as he re-evaluates his sexuality.

SHATTERED GLASS is one of those books that kind of has it all. The humor itself is enough to make you check this book out. The hilarious moments become some of the most entertaining bits in this book. Yet Austin comes across as very approachable and relatable as he falls hard for this stranger. It’s kind of cute actually.

The romance blooms beautifully, creating an believable relationship even though it starts from something very sketchy. The sex is wonderful as well, stemming from the intense sexual tension that is there from page one. Dani Alexander covers ALL the grounds in this steamy and silly read.

The writing in Shattered Glass is lovely. Dani Alexander has a truly great writing style. I really liked the character interactions and dialogue. There are some typos but I was able to shrug them off on account of the story being so damn absorbing. Like paper towels it sopped my attention right up. RIGHT UP! Absorbent.

Also, BUNNY SLIPPERS! Enough said.

Only I have more things I want to say. This was hilarious. The characterizations were amazing. Peter is snarky and hostile. Austin is sarcastic and sweet, but really he's kind of a jerk. I mean, the things that tumbles out of his mouth, and his delightful thought nuggets = Epic POV. I love both characters. I appreciated the realism in their horrible decision making skills. Of course, since they are both so deliciously flawed, there is a bit of angst that balances well with the humor.

Oh sweet tasty morsel of flawed characters how I love you so.

I had some minor issues with the crime plot. There was a lot going on. I think some of the events just got in the way of the story and took away from Peter and Austin's relationship. Also, I was very aware at some points that I needed to engage in some suspension of disbelief. Even with that in mind, this book, and more importantly Dani Alexander's writing jujitsu (seriously Dani got skills) completely blew my mind.

I can't stop thinking about Peter's brothers. Cai in particular. I cannot wait for their stories. I'm practically salivating from how much I want to read both of their books. Nope, not practically, I am. That's definitely drool on my keyboard.

4 Stars

I absolutely LOVED this story. It had me in tears of laughter, it broke my heart and it had me on the edge of my seat. What a brilliantly written piece of work...quality! It has everything from a fab plot, unexpected twists, suspense, lovable characters, hilarious dialogue and sweet romance. It is a heartbreaking and scary dark crime investigation which at times shocked me! I also have to say that this story is written in such a way that it seems bang up to date and I could not put it down!

All the characters are completely lovable. They all have their issues, trauma, heartbreak and I honestly loved them all, they were so well written, had such depth, and I felt everything they did in their journeys.

Austin seems to have it all, well he thinks so anyway, as does everyone around him. He is loaded, has a beautiful house, a job he loves and he's marrying a beautiful woman; his best friend. His journey of self discovery plays out in the most unusual way and begins when he goes to a diner and meets a pierced redhead in bunny slippers....

Now the main character Austin owns this story, completely! He had me actually laughing out loud through most of this book, through his lack of filter, as in he has none, at all!! He is an amazing character, his sense of humour is pure class although he was using his one liners as a shield and at times it broke my heart. The story is a dark and gritty one but Austin prevented it from being too much so. Austin completely took a piece of my heart!

I loved Peter Rabbit too I just wanted to pick him out my kindle and cuddle him silly!! I struggled to figure him out and it took a while before he showed his true self. His life experiences masking who he really is. He was so busy looking after everyone else it made me want to cry!!

I can definitely recommend this book.....oh and bunny slippers!!!

WELL... O. M. G! Yeah this book was intense! Austin, oh that man was so confused and snarky and witty and just HILARIOUS! He was a bastard and an angel and I wanted to hug him and strangle him all at the same time. Peter... THAT MAN well, he was born in Dani Alexanders mind to make my ovaries explode! But seriously... *catching my breath* WHAT A TALE! Plot, character, entertainment. Tears and laughter and to make it all perfect MYSTERY. This book literally had it all! You want it you got it. I am not exaggerating even a little bit! I held my breath a lot in this book to the point I almost passed out LOL! Dani Alexander knows how to write a book! I can not WAIT until book 2 of this amazingness! SWEET LORD!

Austin Glass is a police detective who just happens to also be a trust fund baby. He quick with the wit & is often accused of not taking anything seriously. He's commitment phobic & has cheated on all his prior fiancees except for the one he currently has. His entire view of himself gets turned upside down the first time he sees Peter. He is obsessed with Peter & starts to think maybe he's gay.

As he continues obsessing over Peter & relentlessly pursuing him, Austin begins to remember traumatic events from when he was a teen involving one of his best friends. Then he begins to realize that Peter reminds him of his friend, Jesse. Superficially anyway. Their personalities are nothing alike.

There's plenty of action, snark, & sexual tension in this book. My favorite things!

This book posed an interesting problem for me as a reader. I was far more interested in the inner rumblings of Austin's mind than either the reality of his professional life or even the romance between him and Peter. The criminal-detective stuff took up way too much of the book and was over-plotted to the point where I was just flipping pages to get it over with. The romance with Peter was enjoyable but was completely overshadowed by Peter's past and his current obligations. What I did enjoy was how Austin approached life with a gusto that often landed him in hot and hotter water, and a sort of rudeness that carved away any real offence offered on his part. I found this amusing and highly entertaining. I would be happy to read more books by this author and recco this one as a light read for this genre.
