I bought this for Valentines day for my 1st grader and 1 day later she said "mama on already on the 9th chapter."I bought this book because my daughter is on a 5 th grade reading level so I'm really skeptical about the books I buy her because of maturity. This title spoke for it self so I purchased it especailly since the price was right. I usually try to read the books I buy her before I give them to her,so I can give her a test when she is done and so I know what is in the book to have a convo and to see if it has my approval. So far so good.

I really enjoyed this book because it has a theme and it has a meaningful story. It teaches kids to believe in their dreams. It also shows kids that even if you want to do something like winning, then choose the right way to get to victory. I also liked the fun recipe's that the author included. I would definelty reccomend this book.

While I agree, it is nice to have a strong African American female lead in a children's novel, no lead character should set the example this one does. While reading this book with a nine year old, the 'lessons' within the first 20 pages of this book were enough to prompt three conversations about how to treat others kindly and ultimately, for us to put the book down for good. On page 11 the main character, Brianna, describes one friend as having "slightly slanted eyes" and another as "a little bit soft, a little bit round." On page 19, the main character again describes classmates in negative light using outdated stereotypes like, "her cameraman, a nerdy boy who didn't talk. Following them was a semi-creepy girl I'd known since kindergarten..."
As I paused reading this language I realized it was an opportunity to talk about kindness. Sadly, the nine year old already had ingrained ideas about what a round, nerdy, or creepy kid might be like. Refreshingly, she didn't have to be prompted to think about more positive ways to describe these characters... "Maybe the creepy girl is just shy? A nerd is someone who is really interested in something. Everyone is unique."
Shame on this author and publisher for using their stage to perpetuate this ugly way of thinking. Please DO NOT buy this book for any young child. If you do, please be available to help guide them through the close minded thinking within.

I read this book to see if it was a good gift & appropriate. It was not only a fun appropriate read, it encouraged intelligence, hard work & integrity. I believe any child would benefit from reading this book. Especially if they have big dreams.....most of them do!

Thank you for this beautifully written book. My granddaughter loved it. She tackled it in one reading. While reading she wanted to know what was going to happen before getting to the answer. Well written believable lot of entertaining elements for young readers. If you need a change this book is highly recommended.

I read this book as a read aloud/novel study for my third grade class. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book to them! I've found myself getting excited every day because we get to read a new chapter! The content is appropriate, vocabulary just challenging enough, and Ms. Winston's writing is so much fun to read (just the right amount of attitude to make it fun)! Plus, this book has opened up so many conversations in our classroom that I had not anticipated. I highly recommend it!

This book is an amazing way for kids to see the valuble meaning of friendship without being in a cheesey or boring way! I personaly, love this book; a little bit of drama, a little bit of action, and a lot and lot of baking and politics! Still being quiete the perfect book it stays nice and still not innapropriate! ;) :);)

Brianna Justice is in the fifth grade, and her friends are Lauren, Sara, and Rebecca.
Brianna wants to be president of the whole fifth grade, but she has a competition . Jasmine Moon , the new girl, is her competitor. So Brianna fought back! She doesn't want to lose.
The book is believable and exciting because there's a lot of action and emotion. Brianna and Jasmine do seem real because sometimes people duel for what they want. I liked the characters because they knew what they had planned for the election. The words did their job well because I always got excited on what was going to happen next.
