Unexpectedly good. Took me a few pages for the story to catch, but once it did, it flowed pretty well. I especially enjoyed reading about the Irish point of view of WWII. Generally, it is the story of a young Irish girl who grows up during the late 1930s-1940s, and volunteers for the war effort when she is a young woman. I really got into the story, and I would definitely read another book by this author.

I enjoy historical fiction. Every era has unique impacts on those living through it. This author creates characters and storylines that have surprising but believable turns. Ordinary people living extraordinary lives because if extraordinary times.

Reading Jean Grainger's novels is like being cradled in the arms of a dear friend. You can't help but fall in love with her characters, and you feel as if you are right there in that moment of history.

This is one of the most interesting, attention holding, page turning books I have read in quite awhile! The characters were real, not perfect but flawed like all of us. The settings are in times and locations I have wondered about. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting an escape from their own lives for a few hours.

Although I did enjoy this story, some of the storyline was exceedingly similar to another book I'd read about WWII. It took away some of the urgency of reading because I felt it was familiar and predictive; however, a few parts surprised me.

I liked the character development. All so very different. The ending somewhat predictable but I liked it. I wish Richard and Solange could have gotten together sooner. I guess it shows never to late.

I loved this story and following how the characters' lives intertwine. I wish it had been more detailed during the war. I loved the ending. I gave it 4 stars because I think it could have been on a deeper level. Would recommend to anyone.

I greatly enjoyed the historical value in the book. The writing was suburb. It was an interesting tie in between the two wars. We do many things for the good of the country that we would not do in peacetime. Today is not much different with the animosity in the US. A very good read.

That is what happens when you read this book - you become attached to the family and can’t wait to see what happens next. Loved it! I think it would make for great discussions in a book club or between parents!

Vivid imagery, combined with characters, lovely and flawed, this was an engaging read. I will be reading more of Ms. Grainger's work. I am a fan of WWII books and to read about Ireland's place in the history of WWII was very interesting.

The author really captures you from page one and draws you in until you can't put it down! I finished the book in one day because I was so captivated and couldn't wait to find out what happened next. The writing style is reminiscent of the Danielle Steele books I used to sneak from my mom's bookcase as a teenager! Excellent read that I wholeheartedly recommend for anyone!

An absorbing story of neutral war-time Ireland, it highlights the tensions to families and relationships created by political divisions and war. An entertainingly written, winsome tale of love and devotion, at times unrequited,I found myself in sympathy with, and loving the resilient good nature of the Irish in hardship and under provocation. I appreciated the accurate historical background, and the insights this novel has given me into a people whose influence has spread around the globe.

I loved the writing, the characters, the time period and the place. I learned so much about the Irish and what they were doing and thinking during this time. One of the best historical fiction books I've ever read. Thank you, Jean Grainger and keep writing!

I started reading this while on a trip to Ireland. It was such a treat to know of the places mentioned by the author. Great page turner and characters that you care about. I was disappointed when I came to the last page...I want to keep reading about them!

I have enjoyed the book. The characters are likeable. Strangely I have been reading many books set during WWII. This one was from a different angle. How family, relationship and love guides you, no matter the situation.

I started reading books by Jean Grainger in early July of this year and just completed the fourth one, plus a novella. Maeve Binchy was one of my favorite authors, so when Jean Grainger was compared to her, I just had to read one of her books. After reading The Tour, I read the sequel, then the novella, and then Shadow of A Century and finished up with So Much Owed, an Irish World War 2 story. I will be on the lookout for more books by this author because she is a wonderful story teller. The characters are very real, as are the stories.
