The Captured Bride
Michelle Griep is an author I have not read before. I will look for others from this talented writer, she has a way of making words “sing.” This story is historical fiction at its best. The characters captured my attention right away. They were richly painted in technicolor right from the first paragraph. The leading role is Mercy, a female scout in the French and Indian war in 1759.
“Praise always prickled, for it usually meant she’d be asked for more than she was willing to give.” Mercy gives so much in this story. From the first chapter, she drags her mocassins into the dirt at some of what is required of her. Her character comes to life as she “ frowns at the feminine attire” that she is forced to wear and resists the role the English military ask her to play.
The author transported me into a time and place in history that I had little knowledge of the players and the events that took place. There is a bit of mystery right from the start as to what role some of the people are actually playing. I give this four stars instead of five because I struggled a bit with the mystery aspect of the story. It was so well written that did not stop me from enjoying it and reading much too late at night.

Loyalties seem to lie all over the map, especially for the hero of The Captured Bride, Elias Dubois. And with all the intrigue and imminent dangers, Michelle Griep has created another engaging historical novel!

I enjoyed getting to know the main characters of this story and following their mission of transporting gold to another fort. Secrets abound (along with a double cross or two), and there are enough questions and twists to set a good pace. Elias and Mercy make an effective team (when not stepping on each other's toes), while the romantic tension between them keeps things interesting.

I admit I didn't feel as drawn in emotionally as I was with Griep's time-travel romances, but it might just be the timing for me. I remember loving the mystery of those stories...but the historicals I've read have certainly been enjoyable too! And the backdrop of this story coupled with the unique personalities, skills, and occupations of the hero and heroine are right up my reading alley.

This is a great addition to the Daughters of the Mayflower series with its historical premise, well-paced plot, and lessons on faith and trust.

The Captured Bride by Michelle Griep was a nice third installment in The Daughters of the Mayflower series. The historical setting was interesting-upstate New York at about the midpoint of the French and Indian War. The story moved along fairly well, but was a little predictable. There were side stories that highlighted the ruggedness of the frontier and the attitudes toward the natives at that point in history. The heroine, Mercy Lytton, was headstrong and stubborn. Her mother was a captive of the Mohawk tribe. Her father was the chief of that tribe. She had superb tracking skills, but not always good people skills. The hero, Elias Dubois, had secrets, but seemed to be a stand up guy. He was very likable even though he was initially portrayed as a traitor. There was action, betrayal, intrigue, and a little romance. I found some themes and ideas to be similar to those in another book written by this author. As in another book, Griep included a weapon that could have been used, but most likely never would. In both instances, I thought it was quite a stretch. All in all, it was a good book that I would recommend to a friend.

Mercy Lytton is the product of two cultures, her white mother and her Mohawk father. A very independent woman, Mercy was born with the gift of extremely good eyesight which gives her an advantage in acting as a scout for the British. She returns tired from a mission only to learn that the general has another mission for her. A wagon load of gold must be taken to a nearby fort. This is a dangerous mission, but even more threatening to Mercy is the stipulation that she must wed.

The choice of bridegroom is Elias Dubois. He’s been condemned as a traitor and is scheduled to hang. However, he’s given a reprieve to act as Mercy’s husband in the small contingent escorting the gold to the fort.

Mercy and Elias are sympathetic characters. Each is fighting inner demons. The attraction between the two is immediate, but neither is ready to accept it. I thought the author did a good job showing their growth during the novel.

If you enjoy historical fiction, this is an interesting period. The French and Indian Wars saw two cultures, the British and the Mohawks, cooperating to drive out the French. It makes for a story with lots of cultural and historical detail.

Mercy is stubborn, independent, & doesn't trust easily. She was gifted with exceptional sight to see long distant things; & so excelled as an British Ranger during the War.
The British General that Mercy served under, wants the French Gold in secure British hands & in solid British territory. So he induces Elias to take the gold to another British Fort. To disguise what was happening, Elias would be traveling with his "family" of 3 other British soldiers. That's how Mercy & Elias meet, she's to be his "Wife". Her Ranger Partner, an older man, is her "Father". And the General's lazy, whiney 16 yr old son, is the family's "Son".
Elias ends up being the 1st man, Mercy's ever been attracted to; & she fights it ferociously. Elias is instantly drawn to Mercy's beauty & unique personality. Their relationship & trust grows as their adventurous & dangerous trip moves along. Elias keeps praying for Mercy & sharing his Christian faith with her.
Tragedies happen, & deaths happen! I feel you will enjoy this book it's the third book in the Daughters of the Mayflower and I've read them all, they keep getting better and better, don't miss this one.

In this new series, Mercy Lytton, is a scout with keen eyesight raised among the Mohawks, and Elias Dubois is a condemned traitor working both sides of the conflict. They must join together to get a shipment of gold safely into British hands. Mercy, a lady like none other straddles two cultures, both united in defeating the French. Because of her rare gift of unusually keen eyesight, she is chosen as a scout to accompany a team of men on a dangerous mission. It is not her life that is threatened, but it is her heart. Elias faces the gallows as a condemned traitor, but at the last minute he is offered his freedom if he consents to accompany a shipment of stolen French gold to a nearby fort. The gold was stolen from him, and he wants his gold back. The real thief is the beguiling Mercy, for stealing his every waking thought. Can love survive divided loyalties in the war-torn backcountry wilderness? I loved the history, romance, adventure, faith, and family trees.

The book started off fast-paced and intriguing! I've not read a book from this timeframe set in the Native's point of view. Or with the English working with the Native's to defeat the French. This was in and of itself enticing for me. We meet Mercy, a strong, brave woman with Native blood and English blood. And then, here comes Elias, he's a mix of everything, good and bad. Force the two to work together, both being stubborn and independent and of course, you'll have fireworks! I enjoyed the wordiness of the book and there were a few twists and turns along the way. However, about 80% and it started to drag. I feel like the book was trying to keep the twists and turns going to keep rapt attention but it proved quite the opposite. I wanted Mercy & Elisa to finish the mission. I wanted to see if they actually got a "happily ever after." The ending felt rushed. And while the ending resolved everything, I wish I could have read more about these two and a little less about other missions or characters. It lost me there, sadly.

The Captured Bride is the third book in the multi-author Daughters of the Mayflower series with heroines linked by a family tree, and is the reason I began reading this series. I have absolutely loved the novels I’ve read by Michelle Griep, and this, as I expected, was no exception.

Exploring issues of trust, faith, and loyalty while placing a resourceful heroine and an unarmed hero in difficult situations, this is a story that will thrill lovers of adventure, romance, and of stories set during the French and Indian War. Mercy Lytton, as the daughter of a Mohawk chief and a white captive, is an interesting character and I enjoyed watching her and Elias Dubois, a man with a few secrets of his own, grow and learn and, eventually, love.

While the writing of this series is slightly uneven, not so with The Captured Bride. The writing, the characters, the history, and the plot are all enjoyable. Easily, and predictably, my favorite of the first four books of the series.

The Daughter of the Mayflower series continues to draw readers in with superb writing, engaging and complex characters, and the rich historical background against which these stories are set. Like other books in the series, The Captured Bride features an independent young woman who rises to the challenges she faces. Her past is well tied into her present and helps define who she became and, ultimately, where she ends up at the end of the novel. If you ever watched, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, you'll find this story has that type of feel to it considering the tense relationship between the white men and the Native Americans.

The Captured Bride is a powerful and engaging new installment in The Daughter of the Mayflower series. One finds history, romance, faith and adventure swirling around to create a fantastic read for any lover of this genre. A total stand alone novel, my recommendation is you start with the first book in the series to truly appreciate all it has to offer.

Highly recommended!

This was an interesting take on an espionage adventure during the French and Indian War. So many intriguing elements of this time pulled you in to the story and kept the pages turning throughout. It holds the daughter of a native and a captured settler, a spy, betrayal, native culture, various enemy entanglements, gold, inhuman weapons, special gifts, emotional encounters, wilderness knowledge, and romance. Everything blends together to make one exciting and fast paced tale. Nicely executed surprises and challenges for the characters keep you guessing throughout. Mercy is an adventurous and likable character who is illuminating to watch overcome her struggles. Elias is an excellent male lead with skills to spare and a rugged gentleman type personality. I wish they had done more with Mercy’s keen eyesight. It seemed to fade out at the end of the book. I wanted the ending to have a more definitive plan for Mercy and Elias. For how well all other storylines were tied up, it seemed disproportionate to not give the reader more of a look at what their lives would be down the road. Mostly, I loved this trip through the wilderness. I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads Giveaways program.

The Captured Bride, the third book in the Daughters of the Mayflower series, is a stand-alone novel written by the talented Michelle Griep. This memorable novel is genuinely captivating and compelling. Ms. Griep’s writing is not subtle, and that might be why I like it so much. She has a talent for creating sentences that are stories within themselves. And in this novel, her richly descriptive style and attention to historical detail are deeply satisfying and enjoyable.
Lush with scenes of adventure, intrigue, courage, romance, faith, and redemption, the swiftly paced plot is altogether engaging. The characters, authentic and well-developed, are the highlights that make this novel truly shine. Their talents, motivations, fears, desires, convictions, and actions radiate meaningfully with value and purpose.
The Captured Bride is well-written and entertaining. The story it tells is gripping, inspiring, suspenseful, and romantic. It is a book that deserves ardent praise and copious attention. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

A captivating book, set during the French and Indian War, which is filled with adventure, humor, forgiveness, and romance. Mercy Lytton has a special gift useful to defeat the French. She accepts a dangerous mission but does not understand it becomes personally dangerous to her-especially her heart.

I loved everything about this book! The story kept me engaged and I laughed many times. I could not put it down. The description of the land had me pulled right in. It has just the right amount of adventure and mystery. Of course, the delightful romance too.

Mercy is my kind of person. She is not a frilly girl and full of stubbornness. She is strong and fearless. I loved watching her smooth out her rough edges to become polished. Elias is full of surprises. He always remained a gentleman and stood up to Mercy. He is sweet and loveable.

I truly enjoyed the third book in this series. It was clean and fun and I cannot wait to read the rest!

What an interesting time in our history! Native scout Mercy Lytton was so courageous scouting in dangerous territory. Author Michelle Griep wrote The Capture Bride as part of the Daughters of the Mayflower series. Each book is written by a different author. I am happy to say that each book can be read as a standalone.

Mercy's skills as a tracker rival any man. She is an independent woman, comfortable with her skills and not willing to suffer alongside any ineptness. She is not excited, then, to be traveling with a traitor such as Elias and is keen to be rid of him at the end of the journey. The journey, however, does not go at all as planned. As I read this book I was surprised at the twists in the plot.

I have read several works written by Michelle Griep and appreciate her attention to detail. Historical fiction is an important genre for our culture. This one, set during the French & Indian War is enjoyable and adventurous, with a touch of romance.

Thank you for stopping by. I received my copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts are entirely my own.

Prisoner, awaiting execution is amazingly offered a chance to escape death, by going along on a long journey, posing as a family man, to get a load of gold to another fort. He is wary at first, not knowing the plans his jailers have for him. He decides to take the deal, because anything else is death.

Young maiden who was raised with the Mohawks, but lives at the fort now, working as a scout. She has exceptionally good eyesight & the general who is arranging this trek, wants her to go. She will play the wife of the prisoner. Also along will be another scout, who is like a father to the maiden, he is older than she and will play the role of father to her. The other person along is a young, lazy teenager who is good for nothing. The maiden wishes that he wasn't along, but it makes the story of a family going home, more plausible.

They encounter all sorts of varmints on the trail, 4 legged ones and 2 legged ones. The book has several twists and turns, I'll not reveal them, but encourage you to read this book.

What a great adventure story; Full of action, intrigue, mystery, love and loss! Ms Griep is a wonderful storyteller who captures her reader and doesn’t let them go. She weaves mystery into a story that leaves you at the end of your seat at every twist and turn. Love the slow love that develops between Mercy and Elias. There were hooks that I never expected and tons of action that kept me reading hours into the night. I questioned the addition of a few of the characters that just showed up for what seems like such a brief part of the story. I wish they would have been tied back in again at the end. They seemed like the served no strong purpose. This is my favorite of the Daughters of the Mayflower series yet! Loved this story as I have every Michelle Griep book I’ve read so far. She doesn’t disappoint. Her characters are so deep and richly developed. Her stories are layers deep and captivating.

Having been exposed to the French and Indians war twice in a month, I have realised my knowledge of American history has been lacking! The Captured Bride by Michelle Griep, whilst framed as a romance, is a wild and dangerous adventure through a perilous period of time. No one is quite who them seems and, banded together facing daily challenges, each reveals themselves a little more. Romance is there but there is a story much richer than than too!

Elias’s faith is deep-rooted and written into each part of his story. Mercy has experienced great pain and refuses to deal with her sorrow until life leaves her no option. There are several deaths, kidnappings and, generally, a lot more fighting and tension than I bargained for – it was great! Fast-paced, I tore through it, in one sitting, waiting and guessing how it would all work out! Along the way, it improved my understanding of the war! All in all, highly recommended and five out of five!

Mercy, a British scout, isn’t happy about posing as part of a family in transporting stolen French gold to British Fort Edward, but she always does her duty. Elias's choice is to pretend to be Mercy's husband or to be hanged. The other members of their ‘family’ are Matthew, an aging ranger, and the general's lazy son. They need to avoid the Wyandot as well as the French. There are many unexpected dangers along their travels. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through Netgallery. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. This is a well written suspenseful romance. Mercy, the daughter of a Mohawk sachem and a British lady, is a strong, brave independent woman. Elias, half French and half British, has a secret mission to save lives. Both of them are much deeper characters than others initially perceive. One of the reasons that I like this book is that both of them over time see and love the essence of each other rather than their appearance. This is a good series that can be enjoyed as standalones.

Colonial and Revolutionary America are two of my favorite time periods and the inevitable clash of loyalties and cultures never ceases to amaze me! Michelle Griep skillfully conveys the atmosphere of unrest and conflict both on a wide scale and at an intimate level.

Mercy Lytton is a fascinating character and formidable lady warrior. Despite her tough, no-nonsense approach to life (and men), Mercy possesses a generous and compassionate heart. Fierce female leads like Mercy demand an equally clever, skilled, and exceptionally patient male counterpart and Elias Dubois is that man and much more. Elias is a complex and captivating character with authentic faith and a healthy dose of smoldering.

An adversaries romance is difficult to pull off without compromising the integrity of one or both characters yet this story is a delightful success!

While each of the books in the Daughters of Mayflower series can be read as stand alone books, I have to say I have really enjoyed reading them in order. I do wish there was a little bit more history mentioned about the French and Indian War in this one, and it would have been nice to know how Mercy and Matthew were put together in the first place.

I did thoroughly enjoy the character of Elias Dubois, but again little was said about how he was captured or why in the first place? I also found several places where the story didn’t add up, and without giving away spoilers I don’t think it really ever said what happened to Mercy’s brother.

Being that this was a very hard time to be alive, I understand that a lot of difficult, and disturbing things happened. However, there were a few places that made my stomach turn because they were told in very graphic detail, and there were a few things that could have been left out and left a little bit to your imagination.

On the plus side there were some twists and turns that I did not anticipate near the end, so therefore I gave this book 3 stars.

The second book I’ve read by author Michelle Griep, I enjoy her writing. Her style flows well and makes for enjoyable reading. This is my favorite of the Daughters of the Mayflower series. While this series continues through history, each can be read as a standalone so just jump in!

Griep has done her homework in researching this time in history. Her characters and descriptions are very intriguing. The reader vividly “sees” what is happening in the book; the heartache, troubling times, and danger. The people are flawed, realistic humans who grow as the story continues. And her descriptions of the landscape are true to what it would be like.

Mercy is torn between two worlds. Elias is condemned as a traitor. But with all the twists and turns, this story doesn’t go the way I thought it would. If you enjoy historical fiction I recommend The Captured Bride. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

I greatly appreciated the Historical Notes and Bibliography at the end of The Captured Bride, hinting that I could do more digging into the background of this story at need. Having a teacher in high school who was well versed on the French and Indian War, I was already prepared and engaged at the onset of the book. With the rollicking pace of the plot I was held captive by the frequent life and death opportunities haunting nearly every page.

Mercy, of Indian and British blood and Elias of French and British blood have a heritage signifying the opposing sides of the conflict, but become strongly attracted to each other. The intrigue of the assignment given Elias by his superior officer drives the action of the plot. The culmination of the struggles of the main characters with their assignments explodes into a romantic embrace releasing the tensions apparent at the climax of the story. The resolution produces a pleasing sigh to this reader. I truly enjoyed this book.

This book brought to life the time period and difficulties of living in the midst of unrest in North America during the mid-1700s. Mercy Lytton, who is a child of a captured English woman and a Mohawk chief, serves as a scout for the British. Her keen vision and daring has served her well, but she may have encountered obstacles beyond ability to survive. She and Captain Matthew Prinn as assigned to accompany Elias Dubois, who has been accused as a traitor, as they deliver a shipment of gold. Elias has a secret mission too. Thwarted by those who would steal the gold, the party hardly knows whom they can trust. Will they succeed amidst the dangers they encounter? The characters all seem quite true and three-dimensional. The story contains some surprises too, which enriches the reading experience. This was a part of history I didn’t know much about, so “living” it through the novel created a memorable encounter. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

The Captured Bride is the third book in the Daughter's of the Mayflower series. My favorite part of the Captured Bride is the characters. There are at least three that are well-developed and complex. You feel like you know them, at times better than they know themselves. More than one is torn about where they belong, and to who they owe their loyalty. A dangerous and unexpected mission unites them, but at what price?

This story is set in America during the mid 1700s, during the French and Indian War. The main female lead is half Mohawk, and the male lead is half French. Both have to live their lives straddling two very different cultures in a dangerous time-period.

I did enjoy this story, but felt that it wrapped up rather quickly.  It was a slow, intense build up ... with a too-quick finish.

I'm rating this one 3.5 out of 5 trail-side campfires.

THE CAPTURED BRIDE

This is the third book of The Daughters of the Mayflower Series. Each book can stand alone but I've read each one. This book is dated in 1759 in New York.

This was an absolute delight to read. I loved the book. This story is about Mercy Lytton and Elias Dubois. Mercy is a spirited young woman who is strong and independent. Mercy needs to work through her past before she can ever find true happiness. Elias is on a dangerous mission and has to keep this from Mercy. He can not risk being vulnerable.

We often appear to others stronger than we actually are. Sometimes we believe that if we show our vulnerabilities we are weak. The exact opposite is true.

Great book! I can not wait to the next book in this series!!!! I am taking a vacation with each book and I'm not even leaving my recliner. Thank you, Michelle Griep!!!

The Captive Bride
By: Michelle Griep
This is #3 in the Mayflower Brides series and my favorite so far. Although it is part of a series I think that you could easily read this as a stand-alone novel. I really enjoyed how easy it was to read this book. Griep did a beautiful job of giving the right amount of detail to each area to allow you to understand the plot and characters without lacking in description or being too wordy. The characters held just enough mystery about them throughout the book that you will want to keep reading to understand them more. I did not want to put this book down.

The story is set 5 years into the French and Indian war. Without giving too much away the characters are thrust together in attempts to complete a mission of transferring gold from one fort to another. It seems simple but in 1759 wartime such travel is dangerous as is the difficulty of knowing who to trust.

This novel is about a Native American/Caucasian woman, Mercy, and a British American soldier, Elias, who is charged with being a traitor. They become part of a team sent on a treacherous mission through the wilderness to deliver a shipment of gold. Mercy is an indomitable force with a hidden heart of gold. The slow-burn development of her relationship with Elias is quiet but intense. Even though Elias is supposedly a despicable traitor, you can't help but like him right away. He's strong, courageous, noble, chivalrous and downright yummy!

I enjoyed the story. The development of the plot is well-paced and interesting. I was somewhat frustrated with a plot point that wasn't clarified. What's the background story behind Elias and his relationship with the Wyandot tribe? Also, I don't understand the title of the book. What captured bride?

Overall, this book is worth reading. Not five-star worthy (as I wasn't fully engaged), but good nonetheless.

I am loving this series. Michelle Griep is one of my favorite authors. What a beautiful different way she uses her words. I whole heartedly give this book five stars. It has something for everyone. There is history, intrigue and excitement, adventure with twist and turns. Throw in a budding romance and you have The Captured Bride. Our main character and heroine is Mercy Lyntton. What a brave, strong, intelligent and beautiful women. Mercy is a scout with an usually keen eyesight. She was raised by the Mohawk's and is struggling between her two cultures. Her male counterpart is a condemned traitor, Elias Dubois. He is offered his freedom if he helps transfer a shipment of French gold across the war torn countryside to the fort. This was a story that kept me guessing until the end and left me wanting more. I received a copy of this book from Barbour Books Publishers through NetGalley. The Captured Bride is a fun, adventurous novel. It starts off a little slow but then hold on to your seat because before you know it your on a wild and rough adventure! I love this time period. The history seems to be well researched. The plot really kept me guessing. Elias, who was he? Where do his loyalty's lie? The romance is sweet and believable. I would have like to have known more about Elias a little earlier on. Like how old he is and more of a physical description. We do find out later that he is 27. I LOVE this cover it's BEAUTIFUL! The whole book is! The family tree, the chapter headings, the spine. I really Love it! One of my favorite covers ever! This is the first one I've read from this series. I would like to read the others in the future. This is the 3rd book I've read by this author and I look forward to reading many more!

Genealogical saga of the Lytton family continues with the adventures of Mercy Lytton, who is part Mohawk and English in "The Captured Bride" by Michelle Griep. Mercy, independent and strong-willed, is a scout for the American army. Her assignment, along with Captain Prinn, is to transport a load of captured gold to Fort Edward but there is a hitch. The gold will be buried among boxes of home goods and she is to be married to one of the prisoners, Elias Dubois, at Fort Wilderness so that it looks like homesteaders are returning east. The general's son will make the fourth person to go on the trip. Many unforeseen dangers plaque this trip, one of which is her heart being captured by a condemned man. A second danger is admitting her trust in God. A gripping story-line for historical fiction fans. "The Captured Bride" is the 3rd book in the "Daughters of the Mayflower" series. Each book is a standalone (from what I can tell) and I'm not entirely sure why it is the "Daughters of the Mayflower" series as it doesn't take place during the time of the Mayflower. Mercy does mention that her mother claimed she was descended from the original settlers of Plymouth, so maybe that is the connection. I liked Mercy's and Elias' personalities and how they were so much more than what they appeared. I wasn't ever quite sure what was going to happen and was surprised by some of the events that happened. I thought that the spiritual thread was woven into the story well and felt natural and not forced. I look forward to reading more books by Michelle Griep.

The Captured Bride was filled with history, adventure, heartache, romance, with a great touch of mystery. Scenes so vividly described I felt as though I was right there witnessing them. Scenes so heart breaking at times you wanted to reach out and comfort them. Just beautifully written.

So many great charactors who knew God and his promises. By the life they led there were able to show others how to lean on him when times came to tough to bear. God was just all the way throughout.

I admit the first few pages through me off and I almost quit reading. I think it was too much information for a book I knew nothing about. So glad I kept on because this ended up being great Christian historical read that I did not want to put down. A great great read.

And I love that Michelle added a touch of mystery to this novel that kept me guessing throughout the book! Michelle Griep is swiftly becoming one of my favorite authors! I absolutely love the way she spins a tale! I love her strong characters, both male and female! And I love how they are never intimidated by the strength of the other but recognize how their strengths complement each other. I love the way she writes their romances as well. I love the twists and turns in her plotlines, the treachery, and the strong spiritual component in each book!

I also really enjoyed the historical setting of this book! The French and Indian War is not one I have learned much about and so I found this story fascinating. Without any hesitation, I highly recommend this book to lovers of history, lovers of adventure, and lovers of romance alike!

I received a complimentary ARC of this book from the author. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I really liked The Captured Bride. It is the third in a series, but I did not find that to be problematic. Michelle Griep had a way of drawing you into the story. It had a little romance, a little mystery and a little adventure. Instead of the events simply taking place, Griep was able to weave those into the characters personal growth. Mercy and Elias had many factors that influenced their current relationship with Christ, their individual family struggles and the secrets they felt they needed to keep. Each one had to come to grips with their "reality" not being the way things really were. How would they change? Would they change? If they did, how would that effect their futures? Worth the time to read it!

The Captured Bride is another wonderful story in the daughters of the Mayflower series. I thoroughly enjoyed this inspirational adventure back in history before our nation was formed. The author weaves an engaging and well written action packed story with many twists and turns. The main characters Mercy and Elias make for a wonderful team and romantic couple. Elias was dedicated to serving God and country with dignity and honesty and found a way to help Mercy find forgiveness and healing,
My favorite quotes are: “Not many men besides my brother and Matthew ever look past my independent streak to see me....the real me.”
“God will dry each of my tears one day.” And “Loving someone isn’t a show of softness but of strength, for there is no stronger bond.”

I received a complimentary book from the publisher. This review is my honest opinion.

Genre: Historical, Christian Fiction.

My Rating: 4 and 1/2 Stars.

Recommendation: 15+ because of violence.

My favorite character/s: Deliverance (Livvy) Hunter is just sooooo sweet and trusting, normally I don't like when writers throw in a younger kid to show how their characters act with kids, yet Miss Griep did great with Livvy. I loved her and how insightful she was.

My Verse for Livvy is Matthew 18:3

And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

My thoughts: There was a little too much violence for my taste, but it wasn't overwhelming. In all this was a very enjoyable book, and I hope to (soon!) read more by Michelle Griep.

I received this book in exchange for my honest review. (And I am truly happy to provide it! :-) )

What a delightful book. The Captured Bride is book three in the Daughters of the Mayflower series. All three of the books in the series are very good but this one is my favorite. The setting is in the backcountry wilderness of the Colony of New York during the French and Indian War. I loved the characters, Mercy and Elias but all of the characters of the book came alive in my mind. Michelle Griep is an amazing writer who always draws me deep into her stories. She is a master at putting together words to delight my heart. She does history well. I researched some about the war to refresh my memory and she was right on. I really hated for the book to end I was enjoying it so much. I highly recommend this book.

As the third book in the Daughters of the Mayflower series, Michelle Griep’s The Captured Bride continues the fictional trek through America’s history. This story sweeps readers away to the time of the French and Indian War, where Mercy Lytton and Elias Dubois have quite an adventure, and I had a hard time putting it down. Grieps crafts her characters, conveys the history, and threads a faithful theme through it all so very well, and I just loved it. Fans of historical, romantic fiction, be sure to add The Captured Bride to your to-read lists—it’s worth it, and I highly recommend it.

Thanks to Celebrate Lit, I received a complimentary copy of a The Captured Bride book and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.

The third book in The Daughters of the Mayflower series, entitled The Captured Bride, by Michelle Griep is another delightful tale that takes place in a setting that is rarely addressed in novels about American history. Taking place during the French-American War, Mercy Lytton embarks on a secret mission, accompanied by her longtime scouting partner, Captain Matthew Prinn, the son of their commanding officer, young Rufus Bragg, who turned out not to be the worthless man he tried so hard to portray, and lastly, Elias Dubois, the captured French traitor, or was he what he appeared to be also? Follow their journey through trail hardships, Indian encounters, and treasonous conspirators, as they learn to trust their hearts and follow God’s leading to a satisfying conclusion. This is a book that you will not want to put down!

This is a complex book depicting a highly-volatile time in history.

In true Griep fashion, the sense of setting is immersive, so full of historical details and behavior. The conflict and tension doesn't let go until the very end, only shifting in nature (will she go one way or the other)?

Elias and Mercy are very different. At least, they think they have nothing in common with each other. As the story progresses, they discover they are bound by the same sense of honor and justice.
Elias is a true gentleman disguising as a traitor and Mercy is a woman of great moral character, even when she believes she's not deserving.

I really liked the way their relationship developed to the point where they're so worried about the other and making deep sacrifices. Such a deep love.

This book needs to be made into a movie! Seriously. As I read this tale, I could imagine everything, as if I were watching it unfold before my eyes. Very vivid characters and descriptions, indeed! Michelle Griep has yet to disappoint me with her writing. It doesn't matter the genre, she nails it every time. As you read this tale of adventure, intrigue, danger and romance, you will find it very hard to put it
down....yes, loss of sleep is in your future. Speaking of romance, you can feel the connection between Mercy and Elias from the very first introduction and it slowly grows as the story unfolds. Grab this book today and hang on.....adventure awaits!

Michelle Griep wrote a beautiful historical romance novel about a young lady, Mercy Lytton, whose multi-ethnic background helps her in her position as a scout. When she meets Elias Dubois, she's less-than-impressed by his status as a traitor and that he's scheduled to meet the gallows. When Elias is freed to help take a gold shipment with Mercy and two men to a fort several days away, it takes all that is in her to cooperate and do her scouting job.
On the trip, several things happen to increase her tenuous faith and also see Elias in a new light. The question is will she let this opinion of him dim any chance for a romance or will this scoundrel capture her heart?

Author Michelle Griep has a way of inserting you right in the middle of a fascinating story and time in history. The Captured Bride takes place in upper New York in 1759, five years into the French and Indian War. Hang onto your hat! From the intriguing plot, complete with danger, deception, betrayal, and surprises to the lovable characters, and the romantic chemistry between Elias and Mercy, this story has everything! As usual, the author has done impeccable research. This is a must read for fans of historical fiction, with intrigue, danger, and romance thrown in! You cannot go wrong with this story or any others by the accomplished Author Michelle Griep. This is #3 in the Daughters of the Mayflower series, but can easily be read as a stand alone. I highly recommend The Captured Bride!

“The Captured Bride” takes place during the French and Indian War (mid-1700’s) in a war-torn countryside. Again, Michelle Griep presents an enjoyable, well researched, action packed novel. Her books keep the reader participating in the story with no wasted time in drawn out description—just enough to keep you actively in the story. The book is fast moving, full of danger, soul searching, and the rocky path of a blossoming romance.

The main characters are Mercy Lytton, a scout and Elias Dubois, a spy. Read the story to discover what sides they are on! Mercy is the daughter of the famous Black-Fox-Running, Mohawk leader and her lovely mother Amity Lytton captured by the Wyandot tribe and won by Black-Fox-Running. Elias, raised by his famous high-ranking military Grandfather, has spent a lifetime of regret trying to prove himself worthy to make Grandfather proud.

Mercy is full of spunk, independence, and distrust. She has a gift of keen eyesight that makes her uniquely skilled. As a woman, both Mohawk and white, the English hold her in high esteem for her work. Elias captured by the British as a French spy, is destined for execution. But, on the way to his hanging, he is led instead to the commander’s office and offered a stay with conditions.

Thank you, Michelle Griep and Barbour Publishing for providing me a review copy of “The Captured Bride”. I was not required to write a positive review, I receive no compensation, and it was my choice to write this review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Michelle Griep is a great writer and this book is no exception, I loved it. Book 3 in the brides of the Mayflower series is a great historical novel, well written and very interesting. If you like stories of forts, wars, Indians and the wild untamed land, then you too will loved this one.........A half breed woman, more Indian than white because she was raised by the Mohawk tribe and a condemned traitor paired together as scouts through hostile territory, on a dangerous mission. This book will keep you turning pages. Suspense, danger and romance, a potent combination, I was captivated right from the start, there wasn’t a dull moment, . ......My thanks to Barbour Publishing for a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions stated here are entirely my own.

A riveting tale set during the raw and explosive time of the French & Indian War. Characters are well-drawn and multi-layered, rarely simply who they appear to be. While I love strong female leads, at first Mercy's mannerisms came off as a little too oafish, but as she learned to trust, she became much better rounded.

Griep does a great job embedding backstory with perfect timing, like a trail of bread crumbs for the reader to follow, and she was clearly well-versed with details of historical life and the flora and fauna of her setting. Things you can't skimp on as a writer. Her word-smithing packs quite a punch, with clever similies and vivid mental pictures. Many times I'd stop and re-read a passage, not because it was confusing, but because it was so aptly worded.

I thought the author did a great job of presenting the violence of the period in a realistic but still understated manner. That said, those who prefer sweet parlor scenes to scenes of chase and battle may not go for THE CAPTURED BRIDE. Those who love "Last of the Mohicans" in all its heart-throbbing action - you will!

Absolutely perfect!
I have enjoyed the Regency novels that this author has written, but I enjoy her new world writting way more. This story jumps up and runs from the first page and never slows down.
I love that about a book. I love how the author captured the rugged rawness of the frontier in vivid words, and made me feel like I was there, smelling the forest and Earth. I have read the first two books in this series, but this one is my favorite by far. The interplay between the two main characters was well written. I love a love story with a element of danger to it!

What a heart-pounding adventure! From the beginning I couldn’t wait to learn all the secrets filling the pages. Mercy was a fantastic heroine! Strong, capable, she has made herself indispensable in the middle of a war, even if she is a woman. Then there’s Elias, a French traitor, with a heavy burden of secrets that could change the tide of the war. The romance is fun to read, especially as they start on opposite ends of the war, and mixed in well with the tension of a life or death mission. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this series so far, and I look forward to the next.

This is an action packed book from the first page. Never a dull moment.

Mercy is such a strong and brave young woman. I never doubted her abilities to survive the situations she was put in. Yet, we caught glimpses of her vulnerability and her need for help at times.

In the form of Elias.

Another, strong character and I wondered at who he really was. His story is kept hidden and slowly revealed throughout the book.

I loved this early look at America and the things going on in our country so long ago. If you like historical romance you will enjoy this one.

"The Captured Bride" is a heart-stopping and inspiring tale full of adventure and intrigue, history, and romance. It is a book that compels you to keep reading until the end, and one which you won't soon forget. I thoroughly enjoyed this fast moving story set in upper New York in 1759! Mercy’s mother (a white woman who was captured by Indians) died when she was ten leaving her with her Mohawk father. Mercy has thought of her mother as a weakling for trusting in God. Elias Dubois is condemned as a traitor but is he really? Mercy and Elias are excellent main characters as they attempt to deliver a load of gold to Boston. The Captured Bride is my favorite of the Daughters of the Mayflower series. I recommend The Captured Bride by Michelle Griep to others who enjoy historical fiction. This book was incredible! It started off a tiny bit predictable (hero and heroine are immediately intrigued by each other), but quickly became a riveting journey through the wilds of America during the French and Indian War. The main characters, Mercy & Elias, must work together to transport gold to an English fort. Sounds easy enough, but add in the fact that they are traveling through rough territory occupied by Indians and the fact that Elias is a traitor to the English, and you have a plot that throbs with suspense, intrigue, and drama. This was an intense book at some parts, but I truly enjoyed getting lost in a story like this. I appreciated that Michelle Griep did not hesitate to make the story realistic; there are sad, real consequences to violence and she did not shy away from portraying these consequences and the emotional havoc they caused. Mercy & Elias make a fabulous duo, and I enjoyed watching their love grow to the point of being willing to sacrifice themselves for the other. Above all, I appreciated the chance to immerse myself in a setting that I knew little about. Mrs. Griep is so talented at making the setting come to life, and I was easily able to imagine the heart-pounding scenes. "The Captured Bride" is an engrossing tribute to the grit and courage it took to live in North America during the 1700s. Highly recommended.

This book is part of the Daughter of the Mayflower series. The cover is absolutly beautiful. I have read the previous books in the series so I was excited to see this one come available. I have read this author before (you can check my review out Here). In this story, you are transported to a forgotten area of history. The French and Indian war (1790). The plot is very intriguing and took me on an adventure and I could not read fast enough. I always love getting a history lesson as I am reading. This book is well researched, beautifully crafted and a great story to read.

The Captured Bride by Michele Griep is a story about the French and Indian war. Mercy is a scout for the English and is paired up for a mission with Elias, a traitor. I love the dialogue between Elias and Mercy, it is witty and entertaining. Both are strong characters and well able to stand on their own. The story flows well with a few plot twists. I always enjoy the way Michele crafts a story. Although The Captured Bride is part of a series by different authors, it can be read as a standalone book. So grab a cup of spruce tip tea and settle in for a great read.

Mercy was called a "Half Breed" by strangers, but those who knew her were fiercely respectful and loyal, sure of her skills . Matthew Prinn , a ranger had been her partner for three years. He respected her more than most men he knew, but he knew her temper and fierce determination could be her downfall. An assignment had her pretending to be wed to Elias Dubois, a French traitor.
Sent on a dangerous mission, could they succeed? What would she see in the traitor, DuBois?
Michelle Griep has crafted a story of the French and Indian war, that will keep you on your toes in it's twists and turns. Satisfying and intense, it is a pleasurable read!

Those who follow my reviews know that I absolutely love the books by Laura Frantz and Jocelyn Green. Now it's time to move Michelle Griep into that top tier of favorite historical/historical romance authors. She hit this one completely out of the park. Excellent writing. Excellent history. Excellent characters. Excellent story. Quite possibly the best book I've read in 2018. There's no point in rehashing the story here, just trust me, read this one. It's part of the "Daughters of the Mayflower" series, but you do not need to read the other books to enjoy this one. The books each stand on their own. READ THIS ONE.

This story captured my interest! It was a story set in an historical period I wasn't entirely familiar with so I learned from it, too. The main character, Mercy, is a strong woman with an unusual gift that makes her the perfect person to do a job not usually offered to women. She ends up in in some dangerous situations, having to trust people she normally wouldn’t. Her story has depth and involves other layered characters you get to know. There's suspense, intrigue, and romance. The different characters lead you into a deeper story. The Native American angle to it was very interesting and led me to more understanding of their role in our early history. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

The Captured Bride Is a very harmonious book. One book that is jam packed with information and fun. The main character is very lively and is monumental the story is in no way mundane. The story flows and the author is respectful of the characters. She brings them straight off the pages and into your room. It is historic and enjoyable. I learned a lot. The one thing they all have in common is that they all are submissive to the LORD and they need to do that especially then- to survive. Absolutely loved this third book in the Mayflower series! Set in 1759, New York during the French and Indian War, this exciting story held my attention from the first to last page with plenty of action, danger, and romantic tension. Snappy dialogue between the main characters including their own struggles towards personal redemption and faith. Perfectly paced with a satisfying finish. Historical fiction fans will enjoy this one, based on some true events, reminiscent of classic Colonial era tales.

Michelle Griep is one of my *very* favorite authors, and this book did not disappoint. The French and Indian War is not a part of history I remember studying much in school, so I really enjoyed learning about this time before the American Revolution. I love it when a book presents a time period in such a compelling way that I do more research about it -- and that is exactly what I did while reading this book. This book was a great mix of history, mystery, and romance. In case you're reading reviews because you haven't made up your mind, you need to read this book!
