Nathan Pyle perfectly captures the challenges and rewards of life in NYC with advice that is as practical as it is funny. The underlying joy in this transplanted Ohioan's work shines through in an effort that makes two cities proud.

This book is extremely helpful, humorous, and well worth the money! I'm a recent transplant, and some of the tips mentioned in the book we're learned the hard way for me! Buy it for yoy and all your family and friends!

The previously unwritten rules of surviving New York City have been brilliantly captured in Nathan Pyle's poignant illustrations. Pyle uses humor to offer very real and relevant advice for those both visiting and living in New York. I've been living in the city for about 3 years and found most of Pyle's tips relevant to experiences I've had myself. Pyle balances clever commentary on the everyday frustrations of city life with encouragement and a positive outlook.
If you or someone you know either lives in New York or plans to visit/move, I highly recommend buying this book.

Nathan W. Pyle does an expert feat in articulating the problems and situations befalling the everyday New Yorker. This book fantastically welcomes newcomers to our wonderful city and gives natives and residents cause for celebration as we revel in what the author so poignantly and hilariously sheds light upon. Buy the e-Book and and paperback.

Lived in Manhattan for going on 12 years now, and while many may comment that the book covers "common sense", this term is much more easily muddled when living in a congested metropolis. Nathan takes a light-hearted but extremely accurate approach to enjoying NYC, rather than being a hindrance to it's inhabitants.
Well done - the animated version is fantastic as well.

Great fun as a prep guide for my high functioning autistic son to really understand the nuances of NYC. The pics were clear and the signage was presented in fun and non-threatening way... it was REALLY helpful!

Good cartooning but the writing could have been more humorous with more *tips*. I think the author should have interviewed New Yorkers on the street to get more examples from them. Many of the tips were common sense walking rules which could be applied to many busy cities, but this is New York!
Paying tips for help not asked for. Do you pay?
Crossing the street during a red light if no car is around
What to do when a person on the sidewalk looks dead
Best way to carry your money on you
How to ride in a taxi and not show your fear when the driver gets all crazy on you with his driving

A cute little pictorial guide to NYC etiquette. No new material, but the way he depicted it is good for a few chuckles. I especially liked the mnemonic for remembering Brooklyn (B made of Bricks) and Manhattan (M made of Metal) Bridges.
A quick (half hour) read.

Author's "writing" is not the point here. The point is the message and how it's presented. A unique and fun way to introduce tourists or newcomers to the ways of THE CITY and its people. Some really good tips -- and a few chuckles, too.

Such good advice...in such clever illustrations!
I love the underlying message reminding us all to lift our eyes from our screens and be aware that there are other people all around begging to be respected, and that a little awareness goes a long way be it on a busy sidewalk, in a busy subway, etc.
You get a glimpse Nathan's innate kindness (and Ohio upbringing!) on each and every page.
His sage advice is valid in any big city,

Very bad purchase. I guess the word "basic" in the title should have been a warning. The "tips" are basic common sense. I gave it one star because it would be okay as a child's coloring book. Not much to it. Waste of money

A must read for travelers, new residents, and anyone who has been to NYC and needs a laugh. Points made are truthful, helpful and leave you nodding your head affirmatively, yet with a smile on your face. I travel to NYC for a week every year, but this book has helped me improve my awareness and etiquette for the next trip. Worth the purchase price!

My friends and I cracked up reading this book. Having just passed my ten year anniversary, I found them just as true as my friend who's been here for under a year. A great gift for anyone visiting, moving to or new to New York. And an awesome coffee table addition for any New Yorker.
Also I have the print edition, but the motion graphics online version {saw it on a news show} looks so cool.
