I received the book for free in exchange for an honest review.

I liked this book. The is no one thing that leapt out that I can pinpoint as to why I liked it. Maybe it was the combination of “misfits” (a non-warrior Centaur who uses magic, an old griffin, and a not-so-lucky lucky deer) that work with an LA crime scene investigator to solve a crime and stop a war.

Dayna, the crime scene investigator wasn't a pushover not was she a total ball-buster (unless she felt she needed to be). The main thing I want to know about her is what is with her sense of smell? It is sensitive and she can figure out stuff from it. Galen, the centaur, is a misfit because he's much rather practice magic (he’s the one who pulled Dayna to their world using magic) than fight like the rest of the centaurs. Grimshaw, the Griffin, is old and should have been retired. I felt like he was the lurker and the muscle of the bunch. Liam is a Fayleene, which are considered lucky, and looks like a deer, except one antler is broken and is not lucky.

Dayna is pulled by magic from LA to Andeluvia by Galen using magic to solve the murder of the Andeluvia king, which could either start a war or keep it from happening. She has an uphill battle because both the humans and centaurs want a war (OK enough of both that they are a pain in her neck). Along the way, she is helped by her friends in both LA and Andeluvia. She starts in LA but travels back at least once to solve the case. And she solves the case.

Would i read more of this series? Yup, in fact, I've already bought the next two books that are out.

this will be a honest review by my self and not someone else. that being said i can honestly say that from the over all plot i loved it, im not much into the forensic type of reading, i will be honest i mainly picked this book to read to see what it was about. and i will say that i was really surprised by the outcome for the book. i wont bore you with the minute details pertaining this book. but i will say this if you love fantasy, love griffins, centaurs, talking animals or let alone just plain reading id suggest picking this up or borrowing it.
the plot was slow to start but then what book wasn't? after the second chapter the story kept me entangled into the story i ended up reading this over a course of 3 days or maybe 4 when i was able to sit down while my oldest was at school and my youngest was busy playing or taking a nap.

this reminds me honestly of terry brooks magic kingdom for sale series(btw if you havent read it go for it) for the total book by the end i was content with the fact that the book is a good read and i would really promote this series to other people who like to read books. for my real score for the over allness from keeping the suspense going, having dragons, portal jumping, wizards and a pissed off centaur i would give it 10/10

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I must say, I've had some very enjoyable luck picking out books lately! This book combines an interesting, fast paced action adventure type of story with the fantasy aspects of going to another planet, with the result of a very good read! Once I started, I didn't want to stop. I like the characters, and the author does a good job with description, both of the surroundings and action taking place. I am definitely wanting to check out the rest of Angel's books.

I liked this book very much. The heroine,, Dayna, is a medical examiner-turned-crime-scene-analyst. She is at a very busy crime scene with an interesting victim when the story opens. The corpse has an injury which puzzles her. Namely, he has a pattern on his body that suggested he had been wearing chain mail. He also has a golden medallion stuck in a wound in his chest! The story really takes off from there.Dayna gets taken from our world into one with centaurs, griffins, and a very unusual type of Fey! She has three days to solve a murder--before a very savage war starts! But no pressure, right? "Forensic Files" meets "Camelot" in a very intriguing mix. I'm definitely putting this author on my watch list! I recieved a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When I first started this book I was overwhelmed- it felt like the author was in a "how many cliches can I use" contest. But I stuck with it and after the first chapter, that settled down and the story unfolded. I was hooked and enjoyed finishing it and look forward to reading the next one. This book is my favorite style of book one stories- a stand alone story. They look like they will go together well but I wasn't left hanging having to get the next one to finish the story, I really hate that. The characters are believable and the story line was an interesting original -for me at least- passing between two worlds theme. I received this book free for my review, I'm very glad I did since I now have a new series to pursue and I would recommend to anyone without hesitation who enjoys fantasy.

My first experience with Michael Angel and I can't wait to read more! I like the fantasy aspect of the book (my genre) and bringing in "our world" just made it seem more possible. The action throughout the book was exciting, the intrigue between who we think are the good guys and who you would expect to be the bad guys kept me on my toes. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy and/or crime scene scenarios. “I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review”.

This story really is "CSI meets CS Lewis," and a really fun read. Dayna Chrissie, Office of the Medical Examiner in LA, thinks she is about to investigate a run-of-the-mill murder, but a number of facts don't add up in the case and she finds herself instead transported into another world. There, she is promptly (and unwillingly) enlisted in helping to stop a war by solving the murder of their king. She has a time limit to accomplish this, of course...all without equipment or a lab and surrounded by suspects who seem like the product of a nervous breakdown she suspects she might be having, and/or some kind of chemically-induced hallucination. I won't say too much more about the plot, as I don't want to do the spoiler thing, but I absolutely love the rag-tag band of characters the heroine collects from this other world. Not only are they all likable, sympathetic characters (not always easy to do in fantasy, where it's easy to follow the tropes and create really cardboard archetypes instead of living, breathing "people"), but Dayna really does get handed every single "loser" in this fantastical world. Every one of them is completely endearing, from the centaur with a father-complex, to my personal favorite, the world's only unlucky Fayleene (a deer-like creature famous for their inbuilt good-luck-bringing qualities...well, most of them anyway). When the group follows the evidence back to "our" world, the story only gets better...some of the scenes of this group trying to survive Los Angeles were laugh out-loud funny, which doesn't often happen for me with books. Angel manages the nearly impossible...creating memorable characters in the midst of an intriguing mystery, action, humor and heart. There is even room for a little romance in the mix. I look forward to the next installment in the series!

"Centaur of the Crime" by Michael Angel is a cross-world fantasy novel. On the one side, you have the backdrop of Los Angeles, and on the other you have a magical realm with kingdoms, griffons, gentle magical deer, owl accountants - separated from our own world by a dimensional gateway.

And Dayna Crissie, an LAPD foresnics technician, is needed on the other side.

We have a novel that combines two of my favorite literary genres; fantasy and police procedurals, focused on something virtually universal amongst the myriad worlds - Murder Most Foul (tm).

One note up front - there is no "sturm und drang" here. While serious matters are underway, this book is not filled with angst. I won't go so far as to call it "the feel-good novel of the year", but it does contain a plethora of humorous bits. Some of the humor works (like the Quetzacoatl mural joke), and some fall utterly flat (The "irish cop" joke, but in Los Angeles (et al)?). Comedy writing is harder than you think. TV sitcoms notwithstanding.

The narrative of the story flows well, told in the first person, and unlike some other recent reads, the protagonist's litany of good-natured grousing and slightly cynical observations immediately make her both accessible and likeable. The more you read about Dayna Crissie, the more likeable she is, which makes the myriad travails so much more enjoyable to read.

There are any number of places where a reader determined to be hyper-critical could find fault; all the people speak English, for example. The fantasy realm has magic, and we have technology - but the magic is just as effective in our world as it is in theirs.

Its somewhat unbelievable that the mages of the fantasy realm have known about our world for some time, but have persisted in a "read-only" manner (at least until they borrow some tech to commit murder). Truth be told, that is, upon analysis, perhaps the weakest part of the plot itself. If you've ever been near a body at a crime scene, you'll sympathize more with McClatchy for his use of Vick's Vapor Rub than Dayna's annoyance at it. As a Duke, Kajari should be addressed as "Your Grace".

That said, none of its fallacies and problems are intrustive enough that a reader familiar enough with real murder investigations, or the intricacies of medieval life (*waves at teh SCA en masse*), or even such esoterica as Philip Jose Farmer's analysis of the biological feasibility of centaur biology will escape being drawn into the sheer fun of the story; in that way its like one of the DIE HARD movies - its so much fun and moves at such a good clip that such criticisms only really start popping up after you're done with the book.
While you're reading it, its too much fun to bother with such matter. Pull up a comfy chair, microwave an emergency stash of tacitos, grab a magnum bottle of Diet Dr. Pepper, and enjoy!

Besides, the story has griffons in it. Any criticism is thereby refuted!

Michael Angel has surprised and intrigued me with his book Centaur Of The Crime. The main female character Dayna Chrissie was quite a hoot. Strong and at times vulnerable enough to be a believable character in which you want to know more about her. Other characters in the book are in turn, unique and believable as well. I feel with all the fantasy books that are available to read that Michael Angel did a great job of creating characters that are multi-layered and fun to read about, instead of being " just another" centaur, wizard, or Griffin.
Do you like to laugh? Reading this story made me crack up quite a few times. Do you like a good mystery? Many times I was surprised that I could not guess what was going to happen next. For me that translates to a great mystery story. Also being a crime scene analyst style of story in the likes of many a t.v. CSI show made the story very unique also.
The only complaint I had with this mash up, is the lack of disbelief, or wonderment of certain characters when shifting between a fantasy realm and the modern world. It was all taken, by the characters as if it was normal. In my mind there should have been more of a "holy s###" kind of vibe to the characters mind set when shifting realms. Other than that I have no bad words to say about this book. I truly look forward to reading the others. Now I can get some sleep, for when I find a good book I sometimes forsake sleeping to continue reading. Can't put the darn thing down!
Read this book, you will not be disappointed.
This book was graciously given to me by the author in exchange for a review. I thank Michael Angel and will most definitely be reading his other books

Angel has written a stand up fantasy mystery. Dayna Chrissie, a Medical Examiner in Los Angeles, is summoned to investigate a puzzling murder scene. While there, we get a hint of a romantic entanglement with a detective, and the first of a number of heart rending shocks as someone tries to murder her. She absently pockets a medallion she finds in the murder victim's chest, which turns out to be a summoning talisman. Whisked away to the magical world of Andeluvia, she is greeted by a handsome centaur wizard who explains she has been brought there to solve the murder of the King. When it turns out this murder is connected to the one she had been investigating in LA, she discovers hardly any one really wants the mystery solved. Still, she presses on with advice from a wise old owl and help from an aging gryphon with kitten soft fur, an unlucky fayleene with a broken antler, and the centaur wizard, who has failed to live up to his father's, the centaur king, expectations. Together, this motley band must solve the puzzle and do it before a war between humans and centaurs can rip the magical world apart. I was constantly worried about the characters as Angel puts the lot of them in tight spots as this fast paced mystery unfolds. I eagerly pressed the next page button all the way to the end, where he wraps everything up satisfactorily and hints at the possibility sequel. I say, "Hurry up!"

Michael Angel hit it out of the park with this book. It had all the elements I could ask for in a book. Strong female lead, a murder mystery, world travel through a portal, wizards, griffins, Faylene and of course a centaur. I found myself laughing out loud at Dayna Chrissie's one liners. If you haven't downloaded or bought this book, do it now - you won't be sorry. I downloaded the second book and the third book is coming out this year. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I'm so glad I did. I'm adding Michael Angel to my list of favorite authors.

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more involving the same characters. It was very well written, the plot was well thought out, and the characters and their interactions were very believable. The story involved enough twisty-turney bends that I was kept guessing. I recommend this unreservedly to anyone who loves fantasy and is looking for a fun, rollicking read! Thank you!

I have to say right off that I was given a free copy to read and review. I chose to review this book because it sounded the most interesting of the books I could have chosen. It was a good choice. The characters are interesting and I liked the way it bounced between the fantasy realm and the real world. I would have liked to see a tad more character development, but for the first book in the series, it was quite readable. I enjoyed and will purchase the next book in the series. I especially liked the main character. She was intelligent, strong-willed, and an interesting person.

First, I received this book for FREE in exchange for an honest review.

I LOVED it! It was great fun, traveling with Dayna Chrissie, from LA to the magical kingdom of Andeluvia, then back to LA, bringing along her magical friends, and how she "hid" a griffin in plain sight in the middle of LA. I also like the way her mind works. There's a problem with no immediate answer. Her mind goes Click, she puts together some pieces that others didn't, and comes up with a unique solution. Very enjoyable! And after reading the preview of the next book, at the end of this one, I can't wait to get it and keep reading!

Dayna Chrissie is a forensic examiner, on contract with the Los Angeles Police Department. Besides being a civilian, she's female, which means the sworn officers try doubly hard to push her around. At least that's her story, and she's sticking to it.

She starts out a a little too cute for my taste, in her "stompy gothic boots of doom" and deploying her "Chrissie Scale of Stinkiness" at the crime scene. When a detail at the crime scene got her pulse "pumping like I'd gone down to Starbucks and mainlined a Venti espresso", I was afraid the book was going to be unreadably purple.

Fortunately, in Chapter 2, Chrissie hits her stride with the details of the forensic examination of the crime scene, and Chrissie gets out of the way of the story.

Dayna Chrissie is called to the scene of an apparent body dump. But what an odd body it is.

The man is wearing clothes by no known manufacturer. There are no labels, and none of the details on every other line of clothing in the country. He bears severe injuries from a large, bladed weapon, and a hole in his chest from a gun. And his skin is marked with the pattern of what turns out to be mail armor.

And while she's investigating, a sniper fires shots at her. Not a good start to any investigation.

A trinket taken from the crime scene transports Chrissie to Andeluvia, a realm where magic works, a centaur cum wizard named Galen is her assistant, and a king used to be the head of government. Used to be, that is, until he was murdered.

But murdered he was, and it seems the centaurs may be to blame. If the crime isn't cleared up in three days, humans and centaurs are set to go to war. Galen, desperate to prevent this, used his skills in magic to find a forensic expert and bring him -- or as it turns out, her -- to Andeluvia.

In pursuing this assignment, Chrissie won't have the services of a CSI TV show crime lab, or even a real-world one with barbain-basement equipment. Cultural mores don't even permit an autopsy of the dead king.

But she has her allies. In addition to Galen, she meets Grimshaw, a griffin newly detached from the Royal Air Cavalry, and Liam of the Fayleene, a faerie race. With these allies, Chrissie may actually have a chance to solve this crime.

But her quarry isn't stupid. He has at his disposal both the magic of Andeluvia, and the technology of Los Angeles. And he's not afraid to kill to protect his secret.

Centaur of the Crime is admirably well researched, and has its share of twists and turns. This is a well-written (especially after Chapter 1) and entertaining read, that will not disappoint.

What do you get when you mix up a police procedural, a gotta-save-the-world plot, and the Fantasy Island of Misfit Toys? Centaur of the Crime. Peopled with varied characters (perhaps "peopled" isn't the best word; maybe "inhabited" would be better) on believable personal development arcs, the novel is a quick and satisfying read.

Dayna and her LAPD brethren are puzzled by a body that turns up in their jurisdiction, and only the open-mindedness wrought by her medical examiner training allows her to discover the truth. When she is whisked away into a land of centaurs and griffins, she keeps her cool -- not to mention her eye on the professional ball. She is determined to solve the mystery of multiple deaths in multiple universes. Another reviewer compared Dayna to Abby Sciuto, and the parallel is striking. You, as the reader, really come to care about her and her friends.

The LA scenes feel well-grounded, full of salient detail. The scenes that take place in the other universe have an internal logic of their own. When the worlds come together, suspense ensues, but not without humor and soul. If a griffin really did turn up in LA, you can bet the reactions of the passerby would be exactly as described.

I highly recommend this book. If you enjoy political intrigue, forensic analysis, solving riddles, and rooting for the underdog, then this one is for you.

This book is fun and exciting to read. If you like Piers Anthony's books and modern crime stories, this puts them together. It's an adult book so, not quite ok for a kid that might read the Narnia series. Though there is a good tie in when Dayna first sees the Grove of the Willows. It was not grippingly suspenseful, but it does have some plot twists and a fast pace that make it hard to put down.
The few typos and references to griffins having talons are easy to overlook.

Michael Angel delivers a page-turning novel in a unique sub-genre with Centaur of the Crime. This author knows how to grab a reader, hook that reader, and pull that reader through a story - it's called terrific cliff-hangers. At the end of every chapter, you just want to read the next - like an addiction. Angel has built a rich fantasy world - Andeluvia - into which our likable leading lady Dayna Chrissie, an L.A. medical examiner, is thrust. The stakes are high, as "Lady Chrissie" must act fast to solve the murder of that realm's king and avert a devastating war. Twists, turns and action abound, with a highly entertaining level of humor and sophistication. The assembled allies - an outcast centaur wizard, a noble aging griffin, and an ostracized "bad luck charm" deer creature - form an "A-Team" of magical crime-solving and true camaraderie. I very much look forward to a sequel!

One of the more entertaining novels that I have read in awhile. All of character were great and 'believable' in the context of the story. The story line was unique and creative. The ending was unexpected and well thought out. the ending was complete but also left the option for more stories. I really did enjoy this book and hope to see more.

Let's get the legal mumbo=jumbo out of the way: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

We've had CSI, CSI: Miami, CSY: New York and CSI: Cyber. Now we have CSI: Xanth! With all the mystery of a god CSI episode sprinkled with the humor and otherworldliness of Xanth. This book follows in the large footsteps of Robert Aspirin and Piers Anthony and does a commendable job of it. I would explain further but I really don't want to give away the fun of reading it. Let's just say that there were more than a few chuckles and belly laughs along with the whodunits.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to read the rest of the series. It is so wonderful to read the first book in a series and realize that the fun has just begun. I have been a mystery and fantasy fan since my grandfather introduced me to Tolkien and Raymond Chandler at age 9. Mix the two together and you have double the pleasure, double the fun. (No that's Juicy Fruit gum!)

So I say if you are looking for a good, fun read and like mysteries and fantasy then you can't go wrong with this book. Read and enjoy.

There are so many sides to this book! It's part police procedural, part cozy murder mystery, part high fantasy and part comedy with a pinch of romance! It has cops and medical examiners (the heroine, her POV, is one), wizards and kings, centaurs and griffins, wise owls and fayleen (read the book to see what they are). The story is a fast-paced romp through territories real (L.A.) and imagined; I thoroughly enjoyed it, and can't wait to read the sequel!

I read at least two books a day and have done so for the last thirty plus years. I couldn't write my way out of a wet paper bag in spite of an exemplary vocabulary and a very good grasp of grammar. However, that doesn't stop me from being able to appreciate a finely turned out piece of literature, and Centaur of the Crime is a very good example of that. It is not War and Peace, but it's not Dick and Jane either. It's firmly in the middle and all the more enjoyable for it. If you enjoy a good fantasy with elements of a murder mystery, quite a few good laughs, and only one mistake (the new king's name switched for the old, dead king's) then this is for you! This is the one and only book recommendation I have ever submitted and while it's not the best book I have ever read, there was just something about it which made me want to make sure that other people have a chance to enjoy it as much as I did. So what's stopping you? The only thing you have to lose is the time you will spend enjoying a very good read!

I really enjoyed this fun novel. It combines two of my favorite things, forensics and fantasy. I liked the light tone and humor that tickled my black humor funny bone. I loved the heroine. She is smart, funny, and confident; a great role model. I was really surprised that a male author could write such a good female character and not have her feel two dimensional. Another aspect I enjoyed was that the lead didn't have some deep dark secret, anguish or trauma that is so popular today. In fact, she to be a normal, competent, and strong woman without frozen or hyperactive emotions. Yay! You go woman! Some of the supporting characters have issues to deal with, but they are realistic ones that anyone can identify with. Those issues add depth to this charming story, which will be put on my read-over-&-over again shelf.

The tagline "CSI meets CS Lewis" probably tells you if you are interested in this book. It delivers on that promise, a murder mystery set in a high fantasy world of wizards, knights and of course talking animals.

The story is well told, but for me the true selling point is how vividly the author portrays the characters. I want to see more in this world, and I especially want to see more from this cast of characters.

I highly recommend this book.

Mr. Angel has created a highly entertaining and engrossing story that expertly weaves the procedural drama and precision of criminal forensics with a complex and mystical fantasy world called Andeluvia with a variety of mystical creatures. The female lead, Dayna Chrissie, is a wonderful character study and a balance of toughness, emotion, and perseverance to carry this novel. The stars of the show, however, are the rag-tag group of mystical creatures to come together to help her solve the key mystery that involves both worlds. Angel takes the time to tell each story of these companions, and doesn't hesitate to give them the best lines and jokes, either! Rounding out the novel are a wealth of supporting characters (both earth-bound and beyond) and a story that will keep you guessing... and wanting more!

Full of twists and turns, deliciously detailed and paced, this "CSI meets CS Lewis" hits all the right notes in all the right places. You will laugh, you will cry, you will fall in love. Angel has painted the picture of a fantasy world that can interact with Earth in countless ways and provide endless amounts of entertainment to come, I hope. I believe in Dayna Chrissie and Andeluvia!

Interesting start to a fantasy series that manages to make forensics fairly critical in a very unique setting. The characters are fun, given just enough depth to not be cookie-cutter while still maintaining a pretty light mystery tone. Good action and humor mixed in spots. Fun read.

Wow - the book quickly drops you into the action and the background information comes along as the story progresses. It really did seem like "CSI meets CS Lewis" as someone posted. I love the fantasy-urban fantasy genres and this book fits the bill perfectly. The formatting and grammar was well done and it is nice to read an indie book that is NOT full of grammatical errors nor misspellings.

I will be continuing on with the other books in the series.

I enjoyed this story a lot! I like forensics based mysteries, and fantasy, and I got both for the price of one! Mr. Angel has a talent for making the technology-driven world we live in mesh with a world where magic (and magical creatures) exist. He also has a sly sense of humor. I highly recommend this book. Oh yes, I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and this is ir!

Firstly, I was given a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

I have to be completely honest and say I absolutely loved it! It's a really unique plot, and the writing made the plot fairly gallop along. The movement between the two worlds was handled well, and both universes were equally well drawn. The characters are engaging and I loved the interaction between them all. I can only recommend this book and I am now off to download Book 2!

Do yourself a favour and read it!

I should preface my review by saying that I am not usually a fan of crime books and I really don't like CSI. That being said, I did enjoy this book. The only things I wish are that we'd gotten to spend more time in the fantasy setting and less in the "real world" and that we'd gotten to learn more about the main character. The characters in general are not particularly diverse which makes it hard for me to relate to them.

Otherwise, this book was fun. The plot was enjoyable and I want to read the next one to find out more about the milieu.

I liked the book so much that I have purchased the second book by this author. It was easy to read from the start and had my attention throughout. The characters are a unique set that are certain to get and hold the reader’s interest as is the story line with many twists and turns. I enjoyed the sly sense of humor in the book, too. It is a fun read and may only be a single sitting read because it is so entertaining.

Finally something different! Very entertaining and pretty good characters. So glad there is another book. However it was upsetting after finishing to see on the next book that Liam was going to be murdered!

As a reader I give a book 50 pages to hook me and sometimes 100 if the author is lucky, Angel hooked me in the first five. Centaur of the Crime is both engaging and entertaining. I enjoyed Angel's character development and detailed descriptions. I was pulled into the novel and was welcomed into the story. Looking forward to more from Michael Angel.

I suppose to be charitable it was not what I was looking for. The dialog was stereotypical medieval and the characters centaurs and griffins and owls and just good ole human beings. Funny how the otherworldly characters of a different time and/or place spoke perfect english. Anyway I won't get into the plot because the premise was just silly, the dialog bad and the whole thing just didn't pass the smell test. Wish the sample was longer as I never would have bought it.
