My 1st grade class was into it for the most part but the overall book itself was pretty boring and predictable even for a group of 6-7 year olds. The printing was messed up as well, each page with a picture had nothing on the page behind it so it really threw me off when we all sat down for read aloud, I thought the book was maybe missing pages. I recommend a different book if possible, it is a cool concept, but not engaging enough for an entire book "cool concept", more like a short discussion level of "cool concept". In addition, this is a British based book so I found myself having to explain words or replace English words for American terms so my kiddos could understand what the characters were referring to...more of a headache then needed for a simple afternoon 1st grade read aloud book.

Nope. I don't want to read this kind of trash to my grandchildren. Why are so many children's books aiming at the lowest level of behavior? Why not write about things that raise you up? Difficult to find a good book for 5-8 year old boys these days, for sure.

What a fun story. I have been reading a couple chapters each night to my daughter. Reading is our quality time together and this story is a great one, especially since she would live on chocolate if she could.

This book is on the list for my daughter who is starting 3rd grade in the fall. The book may be great, but every 8th page is blank so the story is missing major parts! I just realized it when we started this book yesterday and the return is outside the window per the policy = lame!

As an elementary teacher, I often read children's books to keep up with current stories, or find something the students might enjoy reading. This story showed up in my recommendations after I purchased the Kindle version of an Olympic story book to read to the students about the Winter Olympics.

The description piqued my interest, so I decided to borrow the digital version to check out before I made a purchase. I had to wait several months before I could read the book as all available digital copies were already checked out. ...

First, this notes that it can be read in an hour. Perhaps an adult reading to him or herself, at an adult pace, in his/her head, then, yes it can be read in that timeframe. However, there is no way a child of the age group this was directed at could ever read it in that timeframe. Additionally, there is a discrepancy between the vocabulary and the intended age group.

I found this book to have very dated grammar structure and writing style. The concept is a great idea. But at times the story itself drags on with tedious and unnecessary details especially for a child's book. This book probably worked back in the 60s.... But I am surprised that it is still hitting such a high rating for today's time period. The vocabulary is out of range for the intended age group... the age range of the main character seems to bounce between very young elementary student to older middle school aged student based on the descriptions of the children and the behavior they display. Additionally, at one point it talks about spelling words that exceed any spelling words given to a traditional student in the younger elementary grades. Yet, the author talks about tiny little shoes ... and other active words that make it appear as though these are much younger children.

While the story has a great message, today's younger reader will struggle getting through the text without adult help. In a time where we are encouraging independent readers this would not be a good choice. Best bet find something similar and more current...or use as a read aloud. It does make the old term beat a dead horse to death relevant.

From 3rd/ 4th grade students (some spoilers) I give this book 3 ½ stars. This book is about a boy named John. John was a good boy, except that he eats a lot of chocolate. Also, he is a greedy person and lies to his parents all the time. Dr. Cranium is John’s doctor. He calls the disease Cranium’s disease, for it was his discovery. There is a mysterious storekeeper that John bought candy from, and then everything that John ate turned to chocolate. John was eating a lot of chocolate. At first he liked it, but then he realized it was bad to have. He almost broke a friendship with someone when his chocolate touch started to happen. One day, John went to his friends Susan’s party, and they were bobbing for apples. Susan had a very pretty dress on. John and Susan were bobbing for apples and John tried taking a bite off the apple when his Chocolate Touch got in the way and turned the whole bucket into chocolate. Chocolate got all over Susan's dress and Susan got very mad and ran away. Susan's mom offered to clean up John, but John was too embarrassed, so he ran away. John’s dad asked why John he was home so early. After his mom turned to chocolate he was so sad and begged to bring her back. Then he realized to not be greedy so he was not. This is my rating for the book. I hope you enjoyed reading it!

In this book there is a boy named John and he likes candy. His favorite candy is chocolate. One day he was going to his friend Susan's house but instead of taking a right like he usually does, he takes a left. Then he finds a coin but the coin is not like the other coins. On one side is the picture of a boy and on the other side it has the initials J.M. John thought the coin was for him because his initials were J.M. John picked up the coin and kept going. Then once he went a little further he saw a candy shop. He stopped at the candy shop and pressed his nose and hands up against the glass and peered inside. Inside he saw so much candy and the cashier waved him in and said "come on in John". John did not know how the cashier knew his name but he stepped inside . . . . . .
I think this is a good book. The main character is John, and there are a lot of exciting twists and turns.

This review is written by my 11 year old daughter.

John Midas is a chocolate-fanatic. He loves any type of chocolate anywhere, any time. He thinks that it is the best food in the world and does not care about the lasting effects it can have on him. One day he walks into a mysterious candy shop and buys a special piece of chocolate. This chocolate makes everything that his mouth touches taste or turn into chocolate. Soon this goes a little too far. Will he be able to stop it?
I like the sense of mystery in the story. When John goes to the store it is like the owner knows everything about him even though the two have never met. Each time John tries to go back to the store, he faces an unexpected surprise. I also like how John makes a transformation in the book. When the book starts, John loves chocolate but when the book ends he does not really like it anymore. I don’t like how the author introduces the sister once and never again. This confuses the reader as to what happened to the sister.
I would recommend this book to little kids who like funny fiction because the book has a lot of jokes and it is fiction. The book is also very imaginative.

I think for sure as I get near the end of the story there will be a revelation that this pleasant-to-tragic chocolate mystery is a dream of John Midas, the main character. Nope. The author simply leaves the story as an unbelievable fanciful tale where a young child is "cursed" with the chocolate (King Midas-like) touch in that everything his lips touch turns to chocolate, a sweet he craves, and selfishly will never share--nor any candy for that matter--with friends. The story is somewhat humorous and very mildly suspenseful, but very light reading fare: Probably more suited for reluctant readers in the middle grades of three through five. Not sure if this is engrossing enough to read aloud to a whole class, but it can be tried. Basically, I would say to offer the book as a personal read, but don't let it take up valuable read-aloud story time, even though it was the winner of the Massachusetts Children's Book Award way back when. I was a little disappointed that this kid's eating of too much candy and not consuming enough healthy foods and drinks is not elaborated on more, but this is written in 1952, sixty-two years before 2014 when this review is written and diabetes is becoming epidemic in children.

Read this as a kid and recognized (of course) the "Midas" references when protagonist John begins turning everything he touches to chocolate. (It's not exactly subtle. The protagonist's name is John Midas. Sometimes being straightforward like that is important in middle grade books.) One thing that impressed me a little is how well the author described the tastiness of chocolate; I remember wishing I could eat a lot of the chocolates described, except of course I would like to try John's disastrous magic chocolate without being unable to eat anything but chocolate from then on. (I remember one gross scene when he tried to get a drink of water at the water fountain and as soon as the water touched his mouth it was liquid chocolate. Imagine not being able to drink anything!) I was disturbed by a kid "refusing to eat anything but candy" and his parents being concerned but not enforcing some kind of tough love on him, you know? Premises that depend on human-nature-related impossibilities kind of bother me, even if you're going to have magic in the book. The "moral" was for John to learn not to be greedy, and the horror of turning PEOPLE into chocolate (when he offered his mother a kiss) was pretty well handled.

Based on the story of King Midas and his golden touch, The Chocolate Touch is a cute story. As the “gift” happens more and more, it gently teaches about greed and the importance of a varied diet. My boys did not like it very much, which is the reason for the three-star rating. The 9-year-old said it was boring and the 11-year-old did not like just how heavily it was based on the King Midas story. I still think it makes a good family read-aloud, though!

I have a kindergartner and a 2nd grader... both are boys. My 2nd grader's teacher read this book to his class, and he came home everyday telling me about it. It got my kindergartner so curious about the book. The teacher ended up giving everyone in the class a copy for Christmas. I read it to my kindergartner before bed, and we finished it in three nights because he didn't want me to stop. I really liked the story because it is something that the kids can relate to. It deals with overcoming our desires to re-prioritize our lives for those things that matter most. It shows how giving into what we want the most (the negative ones) can be damaging to friendships. It ends really well, and we really liked it. There are a few black/white pictures every few pages, so it was a good transition book from picture books to chapter books. This is a chapter book.

This book was about a boy named John Midas who loved chocolate and wanted to eat chocolate all of the time. John's parents were upset because John would not eat any other foods besides candy and chocolate. One day when John was walking to his friend Susan's house he found a silvery, gray coin lying on the ground. The coin had a picture of a fat boy on one side and the letters J.M. on the other side. John found himself taking a wrong turn and ending up at a candy store. He realized this was an unfamiliar street and store. It was strange because the candy shop owner knew John's name and told him he could buy a box of candy with the coin he found. He picked one out and ate the whole box before bed. When John woke up in the morning when he brushed his teeth he realized that his toothpaste didn't taste like toothpaste. It tasted like chocolate. All of the foods that he usually wouldn't eat tasted like it too. Suddenly John felt weird and he thought it was because he ate too much chocolate. Then everything he touched turned to chocolate too. He was thinking that this might be a dream until his mom came home and gave him a hug. After she hugged him she became quiet and walked out of the room. The next morning John walked into the kitchen and saw that his mom had turned into a statue of chocolate. John became scared and ran out of the house. He found himself in front of the store where he bought the chocolate. He begged the owner to tell him what that chocolate was that he ate. The owner explained that once John started caring about others, everything that was chocolate would turn back to normal and it did. I only gave this book 3 stars because I thought it was good but not great. I thought that the book didn't have a lot of information and just talked about how everything turned to chocolate. by: Henry Kearns

The Chocolate Touch is a wonderful book. It is normally for the ages of 9-12 or around that area. It is about a little boy name John Midas who loves chocolate and wishes that it could be the only thing that he ate. One day he was going to his friends house and then saw a coin. It led him to a store that he never seen before. He went in and bought some chocolate. He went home and ate it all in one night. The next morning he woke up and went down stairs to eat some breakfast. He hate's eggs, but he has to eat it because his doctor said so. he put it in his mouth and boom! It turned into chocolate. He drank his orange juice and bam! It turned into chocolate. Everything, for the rest of the day, turned into chocolate if he put it in his mouth. After a while he got thirsty but his water just turned into chocolate. he was getting a little tired of it. he went home all sad walked in and gave his mom a kiss. BING, BANG, BOOM, POW! Oh no ! She turned into chocolate. He went to the store and he told the clerk what happened finally the clerk said go home and your mom will be back to normal. This might be surprising but there is actually a moral to this story. The moral of this story is that the clerk purposely turned hid mom into chocolate because he was being to selfish. In the end of the book John realized that and fixed it and that is why the clerk fixed his mom.

I got this book as part of a clearance bundle at Half Price Books. This is a short kid's book (beginning chapter book) that tackles the evils of candy and the results of selfish behavior. It was a fun read and I liked it. It is suitable for kids of all ages and adults will find it amusing too.

John loves candy, especially chocolate. He loves it to the point where his parents are getting concerned and are trying to get him to give up his candy habits. Then one day John finds a strange coin and stumbles upon a strange candy shop. The coin buys him a box of chocolates. When he opens that box it is not what he expected. Now everything tastes like chocolate and his affliction (at first a blessing) seems to be getting out of control.

This was a cute story with good illustrations. It is pretty short for a novel, as an adult it took me maybe 15 minutes to read it. The idea of everything tasting like chocolate and turning into chocolate is amusing and good for a few laughs. Overall a great retelling of the King Midas story that kids should be able to relate to well. The writing was straight forward and easy to read, very appropriate for the age group it was written for.

The book also teaches a good lesson about moderating the amount of candy you eat, not being greedy, and not being selfish. This was a fun book that I will be keeping around to read to my son when he gets older (he is only three now).

I rated it as. " It's OK." I read this with my 7 and a half year old. There is a bit of a mild twisted plot to this story that upset my son a bit. Yes very similar to the King Midas story we all know well. (well adults know anyway) My son was very worried about who would get turned to chocolate as he figured out that the plot was headed that way from the start. He easily put himself into the story and felt pretty trapped as the main character. It was an easy read, but a bit like a kids level scary story to him. I know there are MUCH MUCH worse content stories out there even at this reading level. He is ok with stories with conflicts between characters but the bad guy in this story was the boy himself as the ending portrayed that his selfish ways got him into trouble, yet I think they really didn't portray him as all that selfish at the start, so he just seemed like a normal kid not overly selfish someone anyone would identify with. So I think my son's internal (I try to be the best man I can be, this kid just made an innocent mistake buying that chocolate. He didn't know, who wouldn't buy a whole box of chocolate with a strange coin he found? I probably would have taken the deal as well.) got the best of him. My son always tries to be the best man he can be and the trapped feeling this character found himself in really bothered him. I guess we will try to stay away from internal self-conflict for a while and stick to bad guys vs heros.

The book that I read was the Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling. This story took place in the day time and at school or at home. There was a boy named John Midas. He loves chocolate so much that he could eat it all day. Everything that he ate or touched to his mouth started tasting like chocolate even his toothpaste. Another character is Susan she is johns friend that goes to school with him. In the story the problem is that everything that he ate and touched to his mouth started tasting like chocolate. They went to the doctor and the doctor gave john some special medicine that he had to take every night.

I give the Chocolate Touch 4 stars. There is a boy named John and he LOVES chocolate, but he eat's too much chocolate and he get's the chocolate touch. I would recommend it to anyone who love's fantasy. In the end I wanted to keep reading. I wish the author would have stretched the story out a little more. P.S. don't eat the book,it will turn in to chocolate.

Do you like chocolate? If you do read this book. There is a boy whose name is John. It's really funny when John gets the chocolate touch. First John likes the chocolate touch and then he does not like it John found a coin and he thinks it looks funny. At the end of the book something sad happens to John's mom. It's also Susan's birthday and John did something funny at the party. If you love chocolate read this book and see why you need to eat other foods. This is an awesome book to read. If you were John you would want the chocolate touch gone too. Read this book and find out why? The author also teached us not to be so greedy. ~Orange Outlaw

John Midas can't control himself when it comes to candy. He'd rather eat candy than anything else in the world, and he's rather eat chocolate than any other kind of candy. Still, it comes as a great shock to him when, the morning after a mysterious encounter with a candy man, his toothpaste tastes like chocolate. In fact, everything tastes like chocolate, and he finds that whatever he puts into his mouth is transformed into pure chocolate.

This instantly causes problems, and John tries to remedy the situation even as the power to transform things into chocolate intensifies.

Some of the descriptions, particularly food descriptions, in this book are very evocative, and the story is fairly straightforward. The author also does a good job of thinking up different ways for John's gift to become a problem.

But I'm not sure that the story has aged particularly well-the device of the magic coin that transforms John, and the reversal upon repentance might seem a little cliched, even to a child. Surely, most children would recognize that a doctor who declares that John's insides are chocolatified is not a qualified medical practitioner (this would be okay if the story was goofy and humorously surreal, but Catling plays it straight).

Despite these complaints, this is an entertaining little story that really does capture the imagination in places, and children who love to read will find this a pleasant way to pass a little time.

The Chocolate Touch, as it says, is about chocolate.
It is also a book with an important moral, 'don't be greedy.'
The main thing of the story-chocolate.
Jhon Midas, the main character,is obsessed with chocolate.
The twisted story of King Midas and and his lust for gold is this. 'The Chocolate Touch'
Although, generally, it is for any age, I would say that the story would
be favored more by children of ages 5-8.
If you would like to get this book, whether for a good read, a story to read aloud,
or just for fun,i say it would be a good one to put on your bookshelf,or on your kindle.

THE CHOCOLATE TOUCH

The Chocolate Touch this a book about a boy named John Maids .He loves chocolate so much he does not care if he misses his appetite. He thinks chocolate is better then food but one day after wandering into a candy store, and buying one of their best chocolates John finds out there might just be a such thing as too much chocolate, and learns that hiding things from his mother is like a shark trying to hide his teeth from someone. I recommend this book to someone who likes to eat too much chocolate, and people who like to hide stuff from others people. I give this book five stars.

He was a pig about candy. Who was a pig about candy? John Midas was. John Midas is the main character in the story John Midas and the Chocolate Touch. This story is about a kid named John who has wanted chocolate for all his meals. Finally, he gets his wish! While he was walking, he found a funny old coin. He was about to show it to Susan Buttercup, Johns friend. But when he saw a candy store, Susan was completely forgotten for that he loved candy. At the store, John traded the coin for a box of chocolates. He ate the chocolate before he went to sleep.
Next morning, everything he put in his mouth became chocolate, including toothpaste! At first, John was very happy. But, when he became thirsty, the water he drank became chocolate! But, even worse, when he kissed his mother, she was turned into chocolate! John ran out of the house, wildly. Somehow, when he stopped, he was in front of the store! John rushed in. He pleaded the storekeeper to help change his mother back. The storekeeper said that if he would not be greedy or selfish, he would help him.
John hurried home to check on his mother. He was so happy to find that his mother was well. John wanted to thank the storekeeper. But when he got back there, he didnt see a store or storekeeper. He only saw rusted cans and broken down bottles surrounding a sign that read SOLD.
This book is great for people who are 7 to 99 and has read King Midas and the Golden Touch. And this book teaches you not to be selfish. So I think its a great book.

Except for being "a pig about candy," John Midas is a pretty good kid. Unfortunately, his weakness for the sweet stuff, especially chocolate, is his downfall. Even after the family doctor explains that too much candy leaves little room for more healthful foods, John continues to scarf the stuff up. So when he finds a coin usable in a never-before-noticed candy store, he quickly picks up a box o' chocolates. After eating its one delicious piece, everything he consumes tastes like chocolate. With increasingly serious symptoms, John inadvertently endangers the life of a loved one and must take the right road to right his wrongs. The Chocolate Touch is a short, entertaining, predictable, 1950s era story about a boy whose obsession with candy leads to serious consequences. Also good: the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books by Betty Macdonald.

I'm 26 now, but I remember reading this book when I was in the third grade. It's one of those books that sticks with you for life, which is probably a good thing considering the message--Both be careful what you wish for and eat a variety of foods. I think about his toothpaste changing to chocolate every time I brush my teeth, and I think about the potato chips probably once a week. It definitely hangs around, even if the details are lost to the sands of time. And in my opinion, a book that leaves a lasting impression is a book worth having around.

This was an excellent book! My daughter loved it! It takes the reader in to a Twilight Zone kind of scenario in that EVERYTHING John Midas touches with with his fingers, his lips, his teeth turns to his much beloved chocolate. At first, he thinks it's wonderful, only to realize quickly it may not be that great afterall. It also has the "be careful what you wish for" moral to the story and adds a bit of suspense when "the chocolate touch" threatens his family.

The story is good, because John Midas eats candy. Everything that he puts in his mouth turns to chocolate. If he kissed people they turned to chocolate. John Midas learns his lesson. I like it because I like the magic. I think it's funny, and I think adults would like it too.

The Chocolate Touch is funny. I liked chapter three because John Midas ate toothpaste. He also ate
gloves. He learned from his mistake that, family is more important then chocolate. He tried to eat but
he could not. I think it was a great book because it was a lesson that family is more important than
chocolate.

This is a great book for kids because it teaches that if you're greedy, you'll end up regretting
it. I also like this book because it is funny at times, (which I'm not going to tell!)

John Midas loves chocolate. He loves it so much he'll eat it any day of the week! He doesn't
care if he ruins his appetite. He thinks that chocolate is the best food discovered by man!
But one day, after wandering into an unknown candy store and buying their best piece of
chocolate, John Midas finds out that there might, just might be such a thing, as too much
chocolate. . .

Read the story to find out what happened!

I loved this book because when John Midas went to this one chocolate shop than ran right up to the storekeeper and said "Remember-the-old-coin-I-found-and-gave-me-a chocolate?!I-ate-it-made-everything-that-touched-my-mouth-turn-to-chocolate-and-I-kissed-my-mom-and-now-she's-chocolate-and-I've-got-to-change-her-back!Then the storekeeper said"Easy now!"So he went back home and his mom turned back to human. Then everyone was happy. It was a funny part. The rest of the book was kind
of silly. This was a hilarious book!

The Chocolate touch by Patrick Skene is about a boy named Charlie who desires eating chocolate. But when it comes to vegetables and real food he dislikes it. Charlie eats chocolate so much that everything he touches turns into chocolate. This book also relates to the book King John Midas because everything he touches turns into gold.

The message that this sends to readers is always eat healthy, and never spend money on things you don't even use or you know you won't use. I myself spend money on things, I don't need.

My opinion is I think you should read this book if you like thrillers and comedy. I also think if you like this book then you'll like King John Midas. My favorite part in this book is when their taking a test and Charlie thinks his pencil is chocolate so he starts chewing it. I would recommend it for children and adults.

I liked The Chocolate Touch because it is mysterious and makes you think! Every time you stop reading you feel like you need to read more! John Midas (the main character) loves chocolate. Susan Buttercup (John's best friend) is a girl who has blond curly hair, and is fun, nice and caring! John's family is very nice but concerned. But I warn you some parts were kinda boring but other than that it is a good book! I thought that this book relates to me because I love chocolate and my family is caring but concerned, too. I learned something and it is be careful what you wish for, it might become a disaster! I would recommend this book for someone who is willing to go on a huge adventure and have fun and it really does have a chocolatey touch!

This was a great book.
But the thing is, it was a bit too short.
Otherwise, it was pretty good book. It was about a boy named
John Midas and he loved chocolate, so one day everything he put in his mouth became chocolate. Hope you enjoy!

The book The Chocolate Touch is a wonderful book.We like The Chocolate Touch because it's funny. One of our favorite parts of the book is when John turned his trumpet into chocolate. This book is also exciting. He ate his gloves and they turned to chocolate! This book is also mysterious. When John returned to the candy shop there was a house where the shop used to be! We hope you enjoy the book and think it's as wonderful as the world (or chocolate).

The book Chocolate Touch is the best book ever, you should read it. Its illustrations are awesome. The book Chocolate Touch is beast mode because its details are epic. On of my favorite parts of this book is when John turned the apple bucket into a chocolate apple bucket. Also this book is very good humored. It stands out, and is like a juicy pear, because its details are superior. The illustrations are so sophisticated which make this book breathtaking. This book is also pretty funny. It is good for visualizing the pictures. One of the parts in the book created lots of mental images for me. It was when John found a golden coin with his initials on it.

The Chocolate Touch,as it says,is about chocolate.
It is also a book with an important moral,*don't be greedy.*
The main thing of the story-chocolate.
Although, generally, it is for any age, I would say that the story would
be favored more by children of ages 5-8.
If you would like to get this book, whether for a good read, a story to read aloud,
or just for fun,i say it would be a good one to put on your bookshelf,or on your kindle.

This is a great book for your child to read that they will want to read more. A kid who touches something and it turns to chocolate, who wouldn't want to know what happens next. Reminds me of the golden touch story.

I remember being in the third grade and reading this. Or rather, having it read out loud to us as a class. I still have my copy of it somewhere. That would have been over twenty years ago. One of my favorite parts about the book is all the little things to pick up on as you get older. Dr. Cranium... I remember my teacher asking us if we knew the importance of his name and maybe one student did at the same time.

I think this was a great book, I've always liked it and I'm now inspired to read it again!

This book is about a boy named John Midas who loves chocolate and candy, but chocolate the most! I would recommend this to my friends and chocolate lovers. I know they would love this book. John loves chocolate (as I already told you) and let's just say he really gets his wish. What is he going to do about it? Will he like his wish? Will he not like it? I learned that you should think about what you wish because it might just come true. And to not eat chocolate all day and every day! My favorite part was when John had just learned about his chocolate power and just kept eating and eating. I love this book!

I read The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling. John is the main character, and he is a kid that loves chocolate and eats too much. Susan is John's best friend, and she is also one of the main characters. The book takes place mostly at school and also at home. One day John got a special piece of candy from a candy store. After John ate the candy, everything he ate turned to chocolate. Just like the time in math class when he bit his pencil and it turned to chocolate. John felt terrible and awful and wanted to stop it but he couldn't. John learned a lesson.

I loved this book because it's about chocolate. My favorite part is when John eats a leather glove. I think the book is suspenseful. Everyone would like this book, especially if you love chocolate!

The Book:
John Midas loves chocolate. He'll eat it anytime of the day. It ruins his appetite - he doesn't care. But one day he wanders into a candy store and buys a piece of their best chocolate. John finds out that he may love chocolate too much...
My Thoughts:
This book has a message for small and big kids. It's a fun read and yummy as well.

The Chocolate Touch by: Patrick Catling is honestly a chocolicous book!!!

The Chocolate Touch is about a boy named John Midas. John was a greedy boy that only cared about himself. The only thing he liked to eat was chocolate. One day John goes to a chocolate shop and buys a chocolate and eats it, the next thing he knows, he has The Chocolate Touch. The best part is when John tries to explain to his parents about his chocolate touch. I difinitly recommend this book to thoose of you who love chocolate. So once you start to read it you'll never want to take your head out of the book!!!

I read this book when I was a young kiddo and loved it and just finished reading it to my 5 year old son and he enjoyed it, too. It might be a little long for kids his age -- might be better suited for 7-10 year olds because he was confused at some parts and grew tired frequently during it (we read a couple chapters a night for about a week) but it was a good lesson and a good, wholesome read.

I read this when I had a big chocalate craving too. Everyone's heard of the midas touch. Well, in this little spin off, the boy can make chocolate into anything he touches. over the course of a few days, he turns pretty much anything into chocolate. Pencils, gloves, jackest, ordinary fountain water, milk, and anything else he could lay his hands on. But it weakens him more and more becuase sugar, as we all know, becomes a major crash once you've had too much of it. But don't worry, kids, it has a happy ending. Enjoy!

"The Chocolate Touch" is an update of the story of Midas with a generational switch thrown in to engage children's emotions. The progression of John Midas's "chocolatitis" from a wonderful to a terrible thing is well done, and his unintentional alienation of his best friend will be something that most children can sympathize with. My eight-year-old devoured this book in a single short sitting, and I'm sure he would award it five stars. A pleasurable light summer read for a child; not a lot of depth or development.

I found this book laying around in a box after I moved, I really love this story it was the first book I read on my own
the first book I read without a school or parent telling me to read. I found it in a box my mom brought home one day.

The story is great, about a child whos greed for chocolate grants him more than we bargained for, just as it describes everything turns to choloate.
Hes pissed off at first because the chocolate he buys with his gold coin yields a very small piece of chocolate, that in turns
gives him the ability to turn anything and everything into chocolate.

The reason why I liked the book was because it was fantasy. I like fantasy books because they make me feel like it is really happening, and you could see what is going on kinda. So I kept on reading this book. It was pretty interesting for the most part. I think this book is unreal. You really don't know if stuff like this could happen. Miracles happen. It's not really a miracle but, whatever. This book taught me to be careful what I wish for. Not that he wished that everything tasted like chocolate. I guess that it just taught me a lesson. Don't wish before you think about what you are just about to wish for. He didn't wish for everything to taste like chocolate. It just happened.

This book is basically a twist on the story of King Midas and the Golden Touch. In this case, though, it isnÃ*t gold that the main character, John Midas, loves, but chocolate. When John receives a "gift" of the ability to turn everything he touches to chocolate, it turns out to be more of a curse than a gift. Having his breakfast bacon and eggs turn into chocolate seems wonderful, but when he gets thirsty and canÃ*t get a simple (non-chocolate flavored) drink of water, he begins to understand the need for variety.
I donÃ*t know many children who have an overpowering love of gold, but just about every child can identify with a boy whose desire for chocolate knows no bounds, and so this story is just a natural grabber for elementary school-age children.
You might expect a book with a message (eat a variety of healthy foods) to be moralistic, even a little dull, but this book is nothing like that. The plot is absorbing, much of it is laugh-out-loud funny, and the characters are all well-drawn and interesting.
The Chocolate Touch is a real charmer.

This book is about a boy who has the chocolate touch. John Midas is a boy who likes chocolate. He eats a magic chocolate bar that makes everything he touches with his mouth turn to chocolate. John learns to care about other things. I liked the book a little. I would give it three and a half stars. I liked its magic. Everything he ate turned to chocolate. It was funny and weird when his pencil, his trumpet, and even his mother turned to chocolate. I think other kids would like this book.

Patrick Catling shows children the consequences of being greedy in this hilarious and tasty book. John Midas loves chocolate, and is in fact obsessed with it. The man at the local candy store gives him a mysterious candy coin which he immediately eats, and it changes his life almost instantly. John had acquired the chocolate touch-the magic that turned everything his lips touched into chocolate. At first, John was elated with his discovery, but before the day was over John suspected that his sweet dream might have a bitter side, when he turns his mother into a chocolate statue.

John then hurries to the store to find the man who gave him the mysterious chocolate. The man informs John that only greedy chidlren even see the coin that John used to buy the chocolate. John tells the man he does not care about a coin he just needs to fix his mother. The man then realizes that John is no longer being greedy and he takes away the chocolate touch.

Patrick Catling's portrayl of this greedy child is hilarious. You can can not read this book without laughing at the things that John turns into chocolate. This is an excellent book for young children to read, so they can understand that greed is not a wanted value.

The Chocolate Touch is an average book. I don't like the part when the main character (John Midas) eats Susan Buttercup's coin. She gets so, so, so angry she runs away and starts crying. Before John did what he just did, John made another person unhappy. The other person John made unhappy was Spider Wilson. Spider is a bully in John's school. John claimed whatever he touched with his lips turned into chocolate. I think it is an average book because there are some really boring parts.
