I did not like this character at all. Sheila came across as the type of kid whose negativity gets under your skin and will be a negative adult...pretty different from other characters created by Judy Blume. I couldn't finish the book.

I have been hooked on the literature of Blume for so long...this one is definitely a winner. The main charcter is caught between her confident, brazen public persona and her phobic secret self. I know I can relate to the chapter about the spider on the ceiling...those things terrify me no end. She is also somewhat canine-phobic (what's the Latin term for that-cynophobic?) and when he family spends the summer at the Egret home, she has to contend with the dog Jennifer (why does the dog get the name Jennifer? I wonder :) who goes on howling jags at night. Sheila makes friends with a peer girl who lives nearby, Mouse Ellis (again, a girl named Mouse? funny) whose little sister is allergic to dogs; so Sheila has an easy out to cover up her cynophobia-by claiming that she gets "hives". She's not yet at the age of being boy-crazy, as one can tell by her disdain for Bobby Egren and Peter Hatcher. Sheila's older sister Libby is always trying to pull rank. I loved the slumber party tale in which the "slam book" activity turns disastrous; with the Egran boy's airplane models being hurled around like popcorn.
Well these are the major highlights of the novel; Judy Blume's approach to this one is authentic and endearing; the common issues of irrational fears, sibling rivalry, spending time in a new neighborhood and enjoying the summer break doing fun, wholesome and innocent kid things, is sure to grant a wide 8-12 audience. There's a reason I've always classified Judy Blume as one of my favorite juvenile fiction authors!

I grew up mainly reading Judy Blume's teenage books and always falling in love with them. I did read some of her kid books as well, such as Blubber, but what fun this was to revisit as an adult.

Sheila isn't the most likeable sort with her traits but this makes her more realistic. Her inner musings about various fears and her unique ways of seeing things crack me up. In a distant way this book reminds me of an early, female, novelized version of Diary of a Wimpy kid novels. Here she's struggling with a family trip and being away, and also having to act braver around her new friend, Mouse, who seems much braver with every circumstance. The humor of the make believe and having to put up a front which is not real sounds about right for what kids go through. Of course there are exaggerations to make it work better as an enjoyable book.

This was received poorer among readers of the series for not having Fudge in it. Sheila is the role here and takes all the stage through random adventures. In a way it would make sense for Blume to have made this not part of the "Fudge" series, but since it's the rest of the same cast and they wanted to benefit from the payroll of the first book, it makes sense as well to keep it part of the series.

Blume has such a way with words and making characters exciting for all ages in the most ordinary of circumstances. Here there's some exaggerated humor that works wonderfully with the type and age. I love how Blume always wrote a book perfect for the age group she aimed for, but used words and hints that adults would get and understand as well.

I was aware that I was buying a "used" book. The book was described as "Very Good", the book that I received was very dirty, worn and the cover was folded over, which I would consider "worn" certainly not, "Very Good!" The pages are fine and the book is readable, so I wont bother to return it. However, I was disappointed.

My fourth grade teacher read this book to my class over a course of several Friday afternoons. It was the second Judy Blume book she read to us, the first being, "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing". I was introduced to Sheila Tubman in "Tales", and then we got a chance to really get to know her.

Sheila sounds a lot like me at ten, trying to figure out where I fit in and trying to appear "perfect". Unlike Sheila however, I loved dogs, loved to swim, and I had to kill spiders for my sister, who was deathly afraid of them. I thought Blume dealt with Sheila's story with a lot of love and humor and sensitivity. By the end of the story, Sheila soon learns that when she really puts her mind to facing her fears, they're not as bad as it seems. This is an important lesson for us all and the younger you can get it, the better off you'll be.

Since the fourth grade, which was over twenty years ago, I have read many of Judy Blume's books and have enjoyed all of them immensely. I'd recommend this book for boys and girls alike. If anything, it'll make you grab your side and laugh. :)

I read this story named "Otherwise known as Sheila, the Great," by Judy Blume. In my opinion this story is really great because there is a whole family which is the parents and two girls, shiela and Libby. The main character is Sheila. She is 9 years old and she thinks that she deserves everything because she is the smallest one in her family. And her parents dont belive that. There si ehr sister which is Libby she is 13 years old and she thinks that she is the best dancer vere. The whole problem in this story is evry similar in real life because many brothers and sisters do not get along at all and they are always fighting about something.

There is another main character in this story her name is Marry but many peopel call her Mouse. It turns out that Sheila and Mouse get along very well and they bacame very best frineds. Sheila and Moiuse do everything to together. One day Mouse scared so bad sheila that she couldn't sleep at night. Mouse scarred her by saying that there was a headless horseman in Tarrytown is where they live. By mouse telling Sheila she ot so scared that she got to go to sleep to the parents bedroon because. And whenever she hear a sound she thought that it was the hedless horseman. Mouse had told sheila many things that would freak her out and she makes alto of dome things. So if you want to find out what does Mouse tells Sheila and what kind of things she does you should get this book and read.

Do you know a good book? Well I do. It's by Judy Blume, and it's called Otherwise Known As Sheila the Great. If you read this, you will love it because it is funny. Sheila has an intersting life.
It's about this girl named Sheila. She lives in apartment with her Mom and Dad and weird older sister, who's a perfectionist. Sheila is weird too. She hates dogs. She won't even get in aqn elevator with ba big dog named Turtle. Sheila walked up five flights of stairs on the hottest day of the year because of Turtle. She's so interesting! It was all-most the last day of school and Dad had a surprise. Whar could it be? The surprise was that they would go away for the summer to Dad's boss summer house. Sheila was dreading to go to the house at the end of summer. She did not want to leave because, well, you'll just have to read it!
If you like a funny story, this is the book for you. This is the best book. Judy Blume describes and gives little details in the best way. I love this book.I love this book. I have read it at least 5 times. It's the best! So go read it.

My daughter is supposed to be reading chapter books but she can't get into them so doesn't finish them. On our last library visit, I asked for help from the librarian. She said, "She just hasn't found the right book yet." This was one of the 'books' she suggested because it was audio. "Judy Blume is great and this should help spark her interest." So we got it. Well, not only did it spark her interest, it sparked mine as well! We enjoyed listening to it together in the car and even at home. One of the things I enjoy most about it is it stays centered around Sheila's thoughts/point of view and it is very entertaining and funny. The slumber party on disc three made us laugh hysterically. I never thought I'd ever try audio books but this was a great idea and now my daughter is checking out chapter books and reading them, thanks to this!

BOTTOM LINE: If you have a reluctant reader, get this fun, entertaining audio book and see if it doesn't spark your child's interest in reading!

How many of us have often thought the same thing? That we are one person to ourselves but to everyone else we are someone else? I read this book for the first time probably twenty years ago. I just recently re-read it, and it hasn't changed. Sheila brings out the truth in us all, how we hide behind our fears and pretend to be tough when we really aren't.

After hearing about Sheila from Peter Hatcher's point of view, it was great to see Sheila's view. Some say the book doesn't fit chronologically with the Fudge books, but I think that it would fit in after Superfudge and before Fudge-a-Mania.

Everyone has a little Sheila in them, whether they want to admit it or not.

I really liked this book. The book starts when Sheila goes on vacation with her family to New York. She was imagining a room full of pink when she arrived, but to her surprise, the room she had to be in was a boys room. He left a note for Sheila to not touch his stuff or else! I enjoyed going on the adventures with Sheila as she spends her time with her family and meets new people and a friend everyone calls Mouse.

You will like this book if you are into adventure and silly things happening. And that's the way the cookie crumbles!

Judy Blume has the ability to write a brilliant story even when her protagonist is portrayed in an unfavourable light. In this story, she does just that. Sheila Tubman is a complaining annoying girl who is scared of everything. She even admits to herself "Sometimes I think I am two people. I am the only one who knows 'sheila tubman'. Everyone else knows SHEILA THE GREAT'." She finds a role model and best friend on her holiday in Tarrytown, 'Mouse', a fearless girl who easily sees the personality traits that Sheila tries to hide.
Well, all I have to say, is that you should read the book.

I read this book to my second grade class, and they thoroughly enjoyed it. I have always preferred Beverly Cleary, but this book may be winning me back to the ranks of Blume.

Sheila is a very funny protaganist. Her constant desire to be popular, adored and liked by everyone fit in perfect with the children. That's exactly the way the kids here at this school work. The book was very funny, I loved the sleepover where the girls secretly shared their opinions of each other. The class laughed and laughed.

I loved that not every question was answered. The book left you to figure out the next chapter. Very nice story, perfect for "summer" reading.

This book is very interesting and very funny. It starts out when Sheila and her family are spending the summer in the Egran's house. When Sheila finds out there's a dog, she is horrified. Even thought the dog is little and harmless, she is still scared. During the summer, Sheila goes to summer camp and takes swimming lessons. She hates the water, but her mom makes her go anyway.

I thought it was funny when I read about Sheila telling her family she was going to get hives from Jennifer. Will Sheila pass her swim test? Read the book to find out!

I still have my twenty year old book report on Sheila the Great that I wrote in the fourth grade. Obviously, this was one of my favorite childhood books. It is a book about a ten year old girl who goes to a cottage on a lake with her parents and annoying older sister for a summer vacation. Sheila is terrfied of the whole experience- meeting new people, the weird dog they have to take care of, participating in a play, and taking swimming lessons. I still get a kick out of it, because when I was Sheila's age, I was a lot like her- fearful of most everything, especially swimming. The wonderful thing is though, like Sheila, I got over most of my fears, in large part due to my parents' encouragement and determination. I love all the characters especially Sheila's new pal "Mouse" who is a yo- yo champion who helps her get over some of her fears. I think all kids, both male and female, between 8-12 would love this book. It is one of the few non- trashy/gross Judy Blume books that I would recommend to children. Teachers, do your students a favor by reading them this highly entertaining book!

This story takes place in summer vacation in Tarrytown because they didn't want to go to Disney land.

This book is mostly about Libby how thinks she is good at dancing like a ballerina but she's not. Sheila is the small one she wanted to go to Disney land and Mouse is a girl how is friends with Sheila.

It's about a journey to Tarrytown they stay in a apartment for vacations and Sheila has friends and she does some stuff with her friends. When Sheila's friends want revenge from Libby because she told her mother that they were throwing the airplane models and they threw one to Libby's friend.

In my opinion It's great because Sheila has friends and they do something to Libby and her friend.

Moving is horrible! One day Sheila moves to Tarry Town. She gets new freinds and a new house. She also gets her first sleepover and first swimming lesson. She plays against the best yo-yo player ever. She gets a dog too. Things are bad then turn good. I give this book 5 stars beacause it was cool, funny and interesting. The best part about it is when Sheila get's stuck because she is fat! I would say someone who likes laughing would like this book. It has 138 pages. It's a great book!

The problem I have with this book, as well as all but two or three of Judy Blume's other books, is that the author expects the reader to know what is going on without actually saying what is going on. This is frustrating to a child Sheila's age who has no idea why Sheila keeps lying about not being able to swim and being afraid of dogs. I was afraid of dogs too and I would just tell people, "I'm afraid of dogs," so I never figured out why Sheila would lie and say she was allergic to them--until I grew up and met people like her who couldn't admit their faults. An okay book, fun in places (like the hide-and-seek game), just not excellent.

We borrowed this book from the library after we read a couple of the Fudge books that we had on the shelf at home. I was surprised that the text now refers to a CD player and personal computers used by children, even though neither existed at the time the book was written. I found the changes jarring and wondered what else had been changed in the book that wasn't so obvious.
As an adult, I was disturbed by how casually the subject of friends being mean (or at least brutally honest) to one another is treated in the book. I don't remember it bothering me when I first read the book, though, some 30 years ago, and it didn't seem to bother my daughter when we read it, though we did stop to discuss how the friends could have been more kind.

Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great is a funny book! Sheila is funny anyway. Sheila is the kind of girl who thinks she knows everything, and never admits what she's scared of. I found a book called Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great! It was about a girl who is scared of stuff. (But she lies and makes it out like she is so great.) What will happens when she lies to her friends? Will they figure it out? As I am sitting here at work, I recall a book that I absolutely loved when I was younger, but I couldn't think of the name. I did random searches on Tarrytown (I knew that much about the book), but nothing came to me until I did an off-handed search on Judy Blume and I realized why I picked up the book in the first place. The main character and I share the same name "Sheila" and strangely enough shared so many of the same characteristics. This book talks about the strangeness of preteen years in a way that is both insightful and humurous. I would definitely recommend this book and I think that even though I am now 23, I will pick it up again.

It's going to be hard for 10-year-old Sheila to sustain her"The Great" image as the Tubman family spends the summer inTarrytown and she must face two of her greatest fears -- dogs (their rental house insightfulness of her writing comes across in reader, too. Every bit of the warmth, humor and includes a beagle) and water (her parents are insisting on swimming lessons). Judy Blume has written numerous books in which she expresses the certainties and uncertainties of childhood and adolescence with wit, understanding and sympathy; this is one of her best. This is truly one of the best books I've ever read. It has great AR points and book levels. It also has active characters. I liked this book because of the details. The characters include Sheila,Libby,Mom,Dad and her friend Mouse. Her
family goes on a vacation to one of her dad's coworkers house while her dad's coworker's family went to England. She meets her
friend Mouse that lives down the street. Her parents tell her she is going to go to swimming lessons. She didn't want to
go to swimming lessons because she thinks she is going to drown. Please read this book.

One of the things Judy Blume does in her writing is that she makes characters kids can easily and fully relate to, and this brilliant feature of her writing isn't missing in this funny novel that is a must read for all young readers.

I got this book at a table on the street that said "free". It's one of those books that has a title that sounds interesting but you don't bother to read it because you read a book with the same type of title but you hated that book. Well, don't be fooled. It's about a girl who's insecure and pretends to be able to do things she can't. Sounds boring but you will like it a lot. Highly recomended.
