These are really cute books and I love them, just FYI they get damaged really easily. Both the one I ordered and the replacement had wrinkles and tears in the spine but the envelope it arrived in was not damaged. It isn't a big deal, but a new book should actually look new when you get it.

I love all the BabyLit books, but this one is my favorite! I went nuts the first time I saw it, such a brilliant idea to introduce little ones to the best literature. It's fun for the parents, and my kids love them too! Jennifer Adams and Alison Oliver, thank you!!!

The Baby Lit books are wonderful, and Pride & Prejudice does not disappoint. They are appropriate for both my 3 year old and 15 month old. I love that these authors and characters are already a part of my children's lives.

I was disappointed with all of the baby lit books. I was hoping for a baby version of the classic plots, but they're essentially just random words related to the books. Not a book I could ready twenty times in a day, which I suppose is okay because my toddler would never WANT me to read it twenty times in a day. Very telling.

I purchased this and two others as a shower gift for a classic literature enthusiastic mom-to-be, and she LOVED them! I think they are a great way to expose kids to the classics before school. The pages were colorful and the content was great for a young toddler. Every kid should have these in their library...along with the actual classic of course!

Loving Pride and Prejudice is in my blood, passed down from my late grandmother, my mother, aunts and cousins. So I couldn't wait to introduce P&P to my 3 kids (ages 2-7). This book is so much fun. I LOVE hearing my 2 yr old son saying "Pemberly" and when my 2 daughters discuss which Bennet sister they like best I want to clap with joy!
Additionally, the art work is delightful and this counting primer has a sense of humor.
Cant wait for different adaptations for all Austen novels!

While some of the pages and items are cute and fun...I have a real problem with a couple if pages. #4 is marriage proposals...I just don't think that is a good book reference, nor is it an object that is particularly fun to count with your child. There are more than four marriage proposals in Pride and Prejudice anyway. The other page I dislike is #10, for which they selected "10 thousand pounds a year" 10 and 10,000 are two different numbers! And whereas the other pages list a number and then the name of the object, the 10th page states "10" and then "10 thousand pounds a year" with a picture opposite of 10 one thousand pound notes. It's just not a good counting book. I do like the illustrations, and I like some of the other babyLit books.

These little books are so cute. I bought this for my niece and have several for the preschoolers in my classroom. They may not understand everything in the book, but most now know that Jane Austen is an author and that there is a Mr. Darcy and an Elizabeth Bennet.

I stumbled upon Jennifer Adams board books through Pinterest. I thought it was such a wonderful and cute idea. Fun for both the parent who has read the classic and for the child since it's a board book.

The illustrations are simple, beautiful, colorful and a wonderful way to introduce children to counting. I do think that after the number 5, it gets a bit staid. I just think that they could have find more imaginative uses for the numbers, rather than 6 horses or 8 musicians. It also needs to be noted that this book is simply a number counting book, not an abridged children's version of the story. So if that is what you are expecting to show your children, than do not order this book.

Overall, I am very happy with the product. And I look forward to ordering more from this author.

This is the best counting primer and introduction to Jane Austen ever! The subjects correlating to numbers are very clever and cute, and the illustrations are great. I love this book--and so does my 11-month-old daughter!

I love the beautiful designs and idea of this book. It is a counting book, so it's counting of things from the book until 10. My daughter loves the pages, I just wish there was a storyline. So that's why it is 4/5 stars.

As a former English teacher, I am both amused and pleased with the very simple introduction to some of the classics. I'm already looking at several others for future purchases. Though no more than a counting book, the lovely art work does an excellent job of portraying the characters and environment of the real Austen's books.

I got this book for my 1-year-old boy--yes, I am starting him early on Miss Austen! It's a cute book, but I was a tad disappointed because after a few numbers, this book kind of lost its Austen flair. I mean 6 horses? C'mon! That's just lazy! The illustrations are adorable and whenever people come over the house, they have to pick it up and exclaim over its cuteness.

One thing is that this book does say it's for age 1 and up. However, it took my son playing with the book a few days to almost completely destroy it, so save it for when your child is older and not in a book-eating phase. The cover has ripped from its binding and the edges are worn away so much that I'm afraid that the pages will start to come apart in his mouth. I don't think it used a proper coating that is as baby proof as you need it to be for a baby book.

For example, our Dr. Seuss board books Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! (Bright & Early Board Books(TM)) have lasted and although they look worn, I'm not worried about pages coming apart in my baby's mouth. I even received a well-loved Dr. Seuss board book from a 6-year-old friend (who also chewed on the pages) and it is still going strong in my baby's hands.

It's a cute book, but not for babies. I have gotten a few more BabyLit books for friends because it's a great gift and really cute. The Alice in Wonderland Alice in Wonderland: A BabyLit Colors Primer one is my favorite.

cute looking book, however, if you don't want to teach your children how to be a gold digger, don't get this book. the contents of this particular book pretty much trains young minds to obsess over rich wealthy men and money. i was planning on giving this to my goddaughter as a present as i love jane austen's novels, however, after inspecting this version before sending off to my godchild i decided against it. there's got to be a better retelling for children's sake!!!

this was a present for a baby, so I didn't actually see it (sent directly to her). But since I love Jane SOOOOO much, I like to share the books I love with others and this is the best way to share Jane with someone who can't read yet.

I bought this book for a friend who has a 9 month old baby and likes Pride and Prejudice, and it was cheap. I wasn't expecting much but I couldn't believe how cutely it is written and how beautiful the illustrations are! So worth it! Immediately came back on the store to buy more BabyLit books. Looking forward to the rest!

I got this book for my mom for Mother's Day present. She loves Pride & Prejudice, and this book is a great way for her to share that love with my 2 yr old daughter. My sister ended up buying Sense and Sensibility too. We'll for sure be buying more of these adorable books!

This book is too cute. I'm a die-hard Jane Austen fan, and I bought this for my daughter's first birthday. The illustrations are cute, and the items being counted made me laugh out loud. It doesn't give any idea of the Pride and Prejudice story, but it's a fun way to introduce classic literature by flowing in some story details yourself. It's a book that's as fun for parents as it is for kids. I will definitely buy more BabyLit books.

If you are a Pride and Prejudice Lover you will enjoy this book with a young child. It starts out very cute but then I feel it goes off the subject just a bit and could have been done differently. Young children are not going to understand what it is about but they will enjoy the counting and the bright pictures. It was a bit pricey for having such simple words and pictures but would make a darling shower gift for a fan of Pride and Prejudice.

I bought this for my youngest niece for her 2nd birthday, because I wanted to introduce her to Jane Austen at an early age and thought that since her older sister (13) and mother both love Jane, this would be a favorite book.
I was pleasantly surprised by the lovely drawings (I would love some of these on a t-shirt) they were simple drawings reminiscent of something from long ago. When the book was read to her for the first time, it elicited amused approval from her mother and sister.
I can't wait to get some of the other books for her for Christmas (so I have a legitimate excuse to read them ;)) And am happy to see new titles being released soon, for some of my favorite authors like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
I highly recommend these lovely books for anyone who loves the classics and wants to pass on that love to their children and have fun themselves reading them to their little ones.

This book is fantastic! I am a huge fan of Pride & Prejudice and think the book is just darling for my 9-month old. It is considered a numbers primer so on one page, there will be a number and the other page will be the corresponding amount of something. It counts from 1-10. For example, there is a page for 4 marriage proposals and on the next page there is Mr. Collins to Lizzy, Mr, Darcy to Lizzy, Mr. Darcy to Lizzy again, and Mr. Bingley to Jane. It also counts things like money, soldiers, houses, and other places that the book talks about. I highly recommend this as a sweet book for parents who love classic novels to share a little bit of Jane Austen with a small child.

This book is really cute, just wish one of the dresses wasn’t upside down... maybe I’m missing something there? I don’t know but just feel like they could’ve fit it so all the dresses could be right side up lol

Not as much narrative as I had hoped for, but overall quite delightful and my daughter regularly selects this over other books, like The Very Hungry Caterpillar or Goodnight Moon, for her bedtime story. I was also a little disappointed that Charlotte's acceptance of Mr Collins' proposal was not included - should have put the marriage proposals at a different number, I say.

What a perfect idea! The illustrations are simple and beautiful. And what a fun way to introduce a little bit of English lit to very young kids! It would make the perfect baby shower gift as well as a perfect gift for any Austen lover. Kudos to the author, Jennifer Adams, for coming up with this charming new series of board books.

running target
This series has a clever concept (classic books transformed into learning board books for babies!), but every book I've seen has been poorly executed. e.g., The items being counted in this book are not things an infant or toddler would be at all familiar with or interested in. Lame

I ordered several of the BabyLit books thinking they'd be a nice simplified version of the classics. WRONG!! They're pretty useless, and that's a difficult feat for a children's book to accomplish. Save your money.

When I saw this on the store, I was thinking "No, way! How awesome for an author to take my favorite classic and morph it into a toddler's board book?" I read the reviews and decided to get it, after all, my elementary-aged kids love the marvel comic for P&P and I figured this would be a great intro for my toddlers. However, I was a little dissapointed to see the whole book was counting objects, characters and scenes from the original. My two toddlers can't keep interest long enough to go past 7, since they already count past 10. My older daughters were only annoyed by it.

Personally, I think my daughters would have appreciated a "cliff-notes for toddlers" version and I would enjoy reading that to them more. Perhaps I will keep it for the next baby in the family, but I don't see it being used or read in our house.

This book is a counting book--
1 English village
2 rich gentlemen
3 Houses
4 marriage proposals
5 sisters
6 horses
7 soldiers in uniform
8 musicians
9 fancy ball gowns
10 thousand pounds

I don't quite see how reading this book to my granddaughter will inspire a love for Jane Austen. Sure I can tell her the background, but it would have been much better to have had some sort of text along with the pictures.

I'm going to say what I've said about Babylit's other boardbooks: They're wonderful.

My two year old granddaughter has never shown any interest in books unless they are pop-ups or play music. Sure, I'd like that too if it were classical! Then one day I brought out four BabyLit Books; classics. All of a sudden she's animated and reading P&P or what she thinks it says. Well this is a first!

I see why she loved the book. Visual is important if you want to capture the attention of a toddler. The illustrations are beautiful and the colors vivid. I read a review someone wrote saying the was no cohesiveness between the words and the art or original story. . In this case it's numbers and if you're familiar with the novel , you'll see it.

Great book to start your toddler off with.

These BabyLit books are so charming. I am a fan of British literature so I find these fun to read to my toddlers. This book offers whimsical drawings to use as you talk to your baby/toddler about counting.

And while some of the reviewers were frustrated that this is a counting book, not a shortened version of P&P, I would argue that there is value in a very simple, early exposure to the names of great authors, the titles of their works, the cultures/traditions featured in their works (for example, this book starts "One English Village." You are introducing your child to the concept of "England." Yes that seems extremely basic and simple...but this is a book for babies.) My own toddlers would not be likely to sit through P&P, no matter how simplified.

Anyway, it's great to do counting (and color, and letters, and...) books with your babies, so you might as well choose one that you find a little humorous as well!

This book is adorable. I read it to my daughter when she was very young & we counted, then as she got older I would add in explanations or bits of the story while showing her the pictures. She would pick it out and bring to me even at 4 years old. I hope to get the story book version too, so we can read that together. And I get to start all over again with my youngest when she gets a little older. The illustrations are cute & the book is good quality!

This would make a really cute gift idea for book lovers who are expecting a little one or as an unusual gag gift for Austen lovers. However, even though the bright illustrations are very charming and the concept is very cute I have to frown a little bit at all the parents who seem to be treating this like some sort of hyperactive parenting tool. Like Spanish tapes for children still in the womb, I have to question how seriously some folk on the store are really taking this - after all it doesn't really work to well as a counting primer. The purpose of a primer is not to focus on the prop, but to familiarize young children with their numbers and letters. While a lot of the objects can work very easily to this end, I think parents need to be forewarned that any plans on directing attention to memorizing names and situations is ultimately going to be bust - emphases needs to be on numbers here, not character names. Ultimately I think this would be a much better gift for the //parents// than the child.

As a side note there's a pretty strong gender bias in the objects used for counting. Maybe I'm just too old fashioned but I can't see young boys taking an interest in counting "pretty dresses".

This book is so cute! I love Jane Austen and anything 19th century but my sister will hardly pick up a book, especially not a classic, so when I saw this I had to have it for my niece. She was under 2 at the time but I knew she would understand the story since some of her family members strongly resemble Mrs. Bennet and she knew "Daddy likes money." The story is boiled down to numbers: 1 English village, 2 rich gentlemen, 3 houses, etc. Of course 2 (rich gentlemen) and 10 (thousand pounds) are the ones my niece can relate to. Of all the BabyLit books I've looked at, this one best tells the story. The illustrations are very charming and add to the plot development. This is a must-have for every little (and big) girl.

Pretty sure this won't make my kid more well-read that any other board book nor do I venture to say it will provide any kind of lasting classic literature exposure. But it does mommy good. :) There are a ton of classics in this series. For books that make mommy and daddy book lovers smile a little bit extra during reading time, these are the way to go. I have four of them out of this series and am definitely going to get more.

I, too, was anticipating getting more of the story from this series of books than they actually had.

However, my niece absolutely loved this book and two others I got her from BabyLit, and they proved to be pretty well targeted to the attention span and learning capabilities of a very young child. I will absolutely be buying her more from this series. (My sister was also really entertained, and she does say she thinks this will make her kid more curious about Jane Austen when she gets old enough to pay attention to plot!)

My baby's favorite page is page three--with the three houses (Netherfield, Longbourne, and Pemberly). And she will look at the pages attentively. But what I don't like about this book is that it's a spoiler: "Four marriage proposals!" I will have to hide it once she has a better memory. (Plus, they leave out Charlotte's marriage proposal--which would make five--though I suppose it happens off stage.)

I have read all of Jane Austen works, many biographies, nonfiction, and oodles of sequels -- but an Austen-inspired children's board book? Whoa! Curious? I was. Don't ya just love the creativity that our Jane inspires?

When I first heard about PRIDE & PREJUDICE: LITTLE MISS AUSTEN (BabyLit) by Jennifer Adams, the same author who wrote the lovely REMARKABLY JANE: NOTABLE QUOTATIONS ON JANE AUSTEN, I was quite intrigued. Would this be a retelling of one of my favorite classic novels for very young readers? How would it translate into a children's counting primer? And, how the heck would I review a children's book - total virgin territory for me.

Once I had a copy of the book in hand, many of my concerns were immediately dispelled. It was indeed a board book, a small compact cardboard version of a book -- easy for a child to hold, unrippable and chewable. (Yes. As a bookseller, I have seen many a toddler stick a board book in their mouth and gnaw on it like a teething ring.) At 22 pages, it was both compact and lightweight, but what will ultimately appeal to parent and child is the total Pride and Prejudice theme that author Jennifer Adams and illustrator Alison Oliver have embraced. From the bright and cheery front cover displaying an image of (one assumes) a wide eyed, and very young Miss Austen, to the 20 clever and striking illustrations inside, I was awed by the choice of characters, Regency clothing and objects used and the ease of the text.

As we progress through the book, each of the pages also moves through the opening chapters of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, ending at 10,000 pounds a year. Jennifer Adams has selected key points and characters admirably. Parents, grandparents and anyone who is an Austen fan will recognize their favorite characters and scenes, and children will be enchanted by the illustrations and the counting theme. Of course this board book format could not be a full retelling of the entire narrative, but it gives the very young reader an introduction to characters, images, and a bit of the story that they can remember when they watch the movie adaptation and later move into the full novel.

Charming, whimsical and historical accurate, PRIDE & PREJUDICE: LITTLE MISS AUSTEN, offers the very young reader an early introduction to Jane Austen - planting seeds for her total world take-over!

Pride & Prejudice is a counting primer board book that I thought was very beautifully designed and decorated. The numbers signify different key aspects of the classic novel and offer children a chance to learn more about Pride & Prejudice with little tidbits about the story illustrated throughout. Four marriage proposals demonstrate the number four, with little quips from the couples explaining very briefly how their relationships evolved. My favorite number was nine, with the selection of nine fancy ball gowns!

Absolutely charming! Purchased for baby shower gifts, and even ordered a copy for myself (someday..). The counting is quite funny to anyone familiar with Austen's work (10,000 pounds a year!) and the book cover is adorable enough to be prominently displayed in a nursery or play room. The hardcover quality is durable and I intend to buy the others in the BabyLit set to match this!

This is a clever way to present a counting book and the illustrations are quite twee and sweet. I enjoyed reading it to my 1-year-old daughter and that is often the most important part of a book: that you, the parent, like reading it and do so frequently. Children know when you like something and will often be fond of it as well. I have now sent this as a gift to some other babies I know and I hope their parents enjoy it as much as we did.

I was excited to find Jennifer Adams' books and I bought several as a baby shower gift for a former student who is a Shakespeare scholar. While the books are colorful and durable, they are so slight in content as to make them a 2 min. Baby bonding enterprise. I can't imagine a child wanting to open them again and again. I returned them all.

Don't be mistaken it is a counting book, it's not a story! But it is great if you love to count and want to share a very generalized miss Austen with your little one. I like this ... mainly because I love Jane Austin. I like it, but I don't love it. I think I was hoping for more. It's a counting book, and I love some of the pages (four marriage proposals, five sisters), but some of them are so generic (7 musicians, 8 dresses) that it makes me kind of sad.

My little girl received this as a first birthday present from her literature-loving aunt (which greatly appealed to her literature-loving mother). It is simply spectacular. I would like to shake the hand of the person who decided we should introduce our children to classic literature in board books, even if it's just a little taste. Not every number is poignant and important to the story, but they're done quite well, and the illustrations are adorable. Well done, Jennifer Adams!

I found this board book at Barnes & Noble while browsing the kids' section... and I laughed out loud in sheer delight as I flipped through the pages. Like other reviewers mentioned- this is NOT a board book version of the Jane Austen novel- it is simply a counting primer with a Pride and Prejudice theme in the pictures. If you accept that and don't have higher expectations for this book, it is an adorable and fun little counting board book that will bring a smile to the face of the Austen-loving parent... not to mention an early start to indoctrinating the future Austen fan :)

This is so adorable! It's definitely a baby book marketed toward adult tastes, but of course it's a colorful counting primer that babies and toddlers will also love.

My one concern is that it will probably be in our family library for well into my daughter's cognitive years and it does contain spoilers for the real book. Oh well, I guess. It's super cute and it's a risk I'm willing to take!

Yes. I bought this book for myself. I gave it to my twin niece and nephew for their first birthday, but I didn't expect them to like the simple text, lovely old-fashioned-esque pictures and Jane Austen fandom as much as myself. I'm still shocked that it is one of their favorite books! They love counting the pictures, looking at the people and animals and houses, and it is so simple and sturdy. So, yes, you do need it.

The counting book is wonderful, it is funny and well illustrated. I wish that numbers- six (Horses), Seven (Men in uniform) and eight (Musicians), were different and less general. A lot of people seem confused by the 'BabyLit Counting Primer' in the title. It's a cute little book for counting. It has pictures that are loosely based on Pride and Prejudice....but seriously, my 1 year old isn't going to notice the discrepancies. Super cute book and my baby loves it!

This book is very disapointing. My 2 years old got really bored with this book. This taught her nothing about the Pride and Prejudice. And there are books out there that have better pictures to learn how to count.

I was so excited that there was a toddler friendly introduction to the classics and so bummed out that the counting deviated so much from the story. I expected some tweaks to make it age appropriate but this was too much.

These books are laughably ridiculous. I mean, what is the world coming to when parents feel the need to introduce "Prude and Prejudice" and "Dracula" to babies? Seriously?!? This just speaks to the ultra competitive nature of our society. Do yourself and your baby a favor and steer away from these books. I'm appalled that they even made it to the market. UGH!!
