Every home schooler or public school should have this resource. Great for teaching and reviewing the core ideas. Whether you use it a curriculum or extra help, these books are great for middle-schoolers and their parents who have probably forgotten a lot since they graduated.
The layout is both fun and engaging as well as draws your eyes to prime ideas and concepts.

I give a 4 for format & most of topics. These are left leaning. You will most likely disagree with some aspects, and explain/supplement - particularly immigration & impact that has on Americas carbon imprint (environment), unskilled labor, etc.

I bought this book because one parent showed me their copy and I was hooked by what I saw. I had to have my own copy. This will help the students I tutor with their struggle with American History. SUPER informative and easy to understand. I will explore further to see if th information is doctored to romanticize American History like ll other textbook supported by the 'establishment'.

I saw this at our local membership warehouse club that starts with a C. They were cheaper there and I fell in love with the whole series! Science, English, World History and US History! I wish my kids were still in middle school so that I would have an excuse to buy them. Yet, I may just buy them for myself :-). They look like they would be a fun supplement for the kids' curriculum in middle school. Very colorful and full of information that is well presented with quizzes and answers at the end.

Everything You Need to Ace American History in One Big Fat Notebook: The Complete Middle School Study Guide by Lily Rothman is the type of reference book I wish I had had as a middle schooler.

Tracing the history of the Americas from prehistory through various wars to current times, this guide is all-inclusive and presents information in a fun, simple to digest format.

The book's premise is that of the notebook of the smartest kid in American history class, complete with highlighted facts, bullet lists, mini quizzes, and underlined points to remember.

The various vibrant colors used throughout the tome are eye-catching, yet not distracting, as primary colors are used.

What truly amazed me about this study guide is just how much information is packed into it, with over 400 years of history captured within its roughly 500 pages.

Despite the sheer amount of facts, Rothman's guide is not overwhelming to read; in fact, it makes learning fun. While reading it, I learned more than expected and my memory was refreshed by information long forgotten.

I really appreciate the information set forth regarding the wars in which the United States has been involved over the course of its history.

The World Wars, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War are included in Rothman's coverage, which thrilled me because I honestly did not know very much about any of them prior to studying the guide.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book not only for the target audience, middle schoolers, but for children of any age as well as adults who may want to learn something in a quick, simple, and fun manner.

Everything You Need to Ace American History in One Big Fat Notebook is designed to look like a very thorough student notebook. It emphasizes "the important stuff" - the key points students should remember about American History from pre-history to 2015. From a homeschool perspective, I think that this book offers a great basic text to be used in conjunction with other resources. It would be easy to choose certain subjects to be studied in greater detail while using this book to make sure that the big picture is not lost. It allows the student to get an overview of all the major events and movements. It also provides a "Check your Knowledge" page at the end of each chapter which could be used as a study tool or test.

This text is designed for middle-schoolers, but high school students and adults could benefit from it as well. This is straight-forward information presented in a user-friendly manner.

Bought this for my dad who teaches history to 8th graders and he couldn't have been more excited. Looking through it, there was many illustrations that seem like they would be fun for an eighth grader to read. I myself NEVER enjoyed history but maybe if I had this book to learn from, that would have been different! The material of the cover is very smooth and the book feels very high quality. Overall great gift choice for those history teachers and history buffs.

It does provide a very BASIC overview of the content covered in just about any American History class and it's easy enough to understand from a middle school student's perspective. That being said, I was very disappointed in the lack of Native American History included. Two chapters to cover thousands of years and hundreds of different tribes just isn't enough in my book. I'll probably use this resources for a handful of lessons, but that's it. $10 makes it a cheap resources that will get used a few times, but there are other books out there that give a less watered-down version of the country's complicated history that are still easy enough for middle school students to understand.

I'm a former educator and my son is getting ready to enter middle school. I heard of this series through a colleague and am so glad I decided to purchase the full set. These are awesome! My son is interested due to the engaging way the info is presented and I love all the mnemonic phrases used to help him recall information.

The only drawback is that there's no end-of-unit questions. I'm currently making packets for this, and he'll be using these books all summer to prepare for next year.

My 11 year old took this book with him into his room and disappeared for the day. He loves the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, and this book has that kind of feel to it...random doodles throughout the book. The information for each section is brief and not so heavy that it begins to be boring; yet, detailed enough to understand the point the author wants to make. My son is already asking for more big fat notebooks...

This book is very biased and inaccurate. I studied history and it missed very important points. This is a very watered down version of the real history. For example it defines mesoamerica exclusively to Central America. Coliniziers as explorers. There is no mention of the US states Mexico use to own it just skips passed that. It emphasizes human sacrifice in Mexico but doesn't really explain it. The dates are a ballpark guess. It makes history look, "ideal, convenient and pretty". Anyone who knows real history would know that it has been horrific. This author seems to have googled, copied and pasted Wikipedia and formulated their own ideas filling in the blanks on information they couldn't find. I doubt they used credible sources. Save your time and money. Go for an actual history book. The only thing I liked was the use of BCE. Before common era which is suppose to be neutral on religion.

My spouse and I scanned this book very quickly and questioned apparent revisionist comments in it. For example: Columbus and slavery, colonists enslaving the American indians, Bush administration found "guilty" of Guantanamo atrocities, and some adverse stuff about Bush and 9/11.

This book deals with history the way the author apparently would like it to have played out. She defines B.C. (Before Christ) as B.C.E (before the common era), A.D. (anno domini) as something else. Save your money and buy a real history book, not one which plays fast and loose with facts.
