I find that novellas are often too short to develop a convincing story, but nonetheless this one was quite good. I was also pleasantly surprised (SPOILER) when Mr Wright turned out to be not as awful as everyone thought.

I'm going to have to give up on the novellas. They just don't do it for me. While there is some conflict between Eliza and Mr. Wright and the characters were drawn out well, nothing inspired me to believe Mr. Wright was no-good, dissolute or otherwise scandalous. Somewhat of a charming and naughty fellow perhaps. Would have preferred a more indepth story. Thus, it was only okay in my view and a little bit of a let down as I was expecting a truly scandalous hero.

This was very romantic. Just the perfect story for a cold winter read. The author knows how to bring her characters to life. It makes the reader want to be there with them. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves romance.

At 0.99, it is a steal !!!!
Though not a huge fan of Ms. Dare, I decided to try this after the good reviews I read at dearauthor and they didn't steer me wrong!
A charismatic hero, a spirited heroine and an engaging romance.... Only con is its too short :)

This was wriiten in a different style that I usually read. The story takes place in different years on certain special occasions. The end is predictable, but seeing how the heroine doesn't recognize what she is feeling is cute.

I love her writing! Always interesting, humorous and of course tantalizing. This story was just what I needed to take a break from the hectic holiday schedule without taking up too much of my time. Thanks Tessa.

I loved everything about this story. Harry has it all -- he is charming, funny, handsome, and a little bit of a rascal. Eliza is a delight and it is a treat to follow her as she matures during the 5 year span of the story.

I quite honestly do not know what to think of this story. It is not because it is a bad story and not well written because it is but still I keep looking for something different to happen. It does not and the end made me think was that it? Quite unsatisfactory.

For the romance in this story to come to light it took place over years, a definite difference from other HR books I've read, however I didn't care for the timeline aspect of it at all, I thought it frustrating, and unbelievable especially with the feelings they had for each other. The second half was much better than the first.

Man I think this story could have gone some place. It just never did. The only way to explain it is.... there was no MEAT to this story. It is almost like an outline of their time together. I just find it hard to believe they fell in love... when? Cause it was a year or months between visits. They never had that romance you expect to feel. It was just hit and miss the entire book. I did think they were having a friendship, but without reading their thoughts... I would have never know how they felt, cause they didn't really every show it to each other. Just left a little flat.

The novel never succeeded in engaging my interest or curiosity. The whole love story develops on the basis of the protagonists' few encounters. And from these few occasions we should believe that spark the attraction and the feelings. In this short story the author didn't manage to give an acceptable depth to both the characters and their relationship. They are sketched very superficially and mono-dimensionally.

I read it therefore I'll review it. This author is actually not that bad at writing, just the story left me cold. Too much silliness really. I like my heroines to be a bit sensible. We are supposed to believe that a worldly rake would entertain any silly child still in the schoolroom and with not much upstairs. Mr Wright is the heir to a dukedom but poor because he supports his best friend trying to stave off insolvency. Oh wonderful man! Meanwhile he staggers around looking like a dissolute rake. They meet in the morning room at a ball where our heroine, not yet out, is spying on the dancing. You can imagine the rest. It's a novella, the pain was over quickly. Since I thought the writer had potential I tried another of hers to give her a chance, the first in the Spindle cove series and it is vastly better. Still a lot of lurid prose around his wonderfully sculpted body, but also a lot of humour, it starts with the hero bombing some sheep. Skip this one guys and try one of her others if you are a newbie to this author.

The story needs more of a storyline. I felt like the first quarter was too close to pride and prejudice,in a bad way. Then the author skipped YEARS between chapters? Lame. If this is how all of her books are I won't be reading anymore from her

Rating: A ... Heat: Warm

Eliza Cade is a passionate and, slightly, reckless young miss. And, because of one tiny bad decision, her father has declared that she can't debut until all three of her older sisters have. Miss Eliza is the wildcard of the family and her papa doesn't want her to ruin her siblings marriage prospects.

Which probably means she should stay far, far away from Harry Wright. Because Mr. Wright is a rogue and a spendthrift. To be caught alone with him is tantamount to utter ruin. So, naturally, Eliza finds herself alone with him... quite often.

But there is not a thing wrong about that Mr. Wright. Except, maybe, that he is deliciously naughty and always says exactly what's on his mind. And has made me fall for him head over slippers. I'm telling you, I'd give my left arm for Harry Wright!

All puns aside, I very much enjoyed the passage of time woven into this novella. The different circumstances that Eliza and Harry continue to meet under. And how he riles her up as much as he heats her up... and then leaves her wanting. But don't worry, Miz Eliza returns the favor in spades!

The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. Wright (say that three times fast!) may not be a part of the Spindle Cove world, but it has definitely helped tide me over until Any Duchess Will Do. I love historical romance--and Miz Dare always delivers greatness!

Favorite Quote:
The devil also looked weary. Fatigued by the world--and strangely vulnerable, this close. The devil put silver threads in his sin-black hair. Just a few, so a girl could only see them if she happened to draw imprudently near. He wore his cravat mussed, tempting feminine hands to put it straight.
Eliza's nursemaid had it all wrong. The devil didn't entice with perfection. He seduced with flaws.
His green, hungry gaze didn't say, Follow me into perdition.
It said, Only you can save me from it.

Omigosh, this was so much fun! I was in desperate need of a palate cleanser and Miss Eliza and Mr. Wright served well!

Eliza is exactly how I'd like to think I'd have been if I'd lived in Regency England - feisty, free-spirited, and a girl who bristles at convention. It certainly made her lively and entertaining as I was always curious to see what she'd say or do next. Some might think her selfish but in getting better acquainted with her, I saw she was a very generous soul.

Mr. Wright certainly seemed a rake! From his first meeting with Eliza, he did his absolute best to rankle and get under her skin. He accomplished his goal with great skill. This made for snarky banter as well as incredible sexual tension. Getting to know him better though, I learned he had a good heart and could make a good match for Eliza.

I think my only complaint would be that things wrapped up rather quickly. That's not to say the story wasn't well-crafted because it was. And I obviously adored the characters. It was just that things went quickly at the end. I do, however, look forward to my next meeting with Ms. Dare.

The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. Wright was a quick, fun romance but it could have benefitted by being a full-length book.

Due to a mistake Eliza made a few years before the start of the story, she has to wait for her three older sisters to marry before she's allowed to have her debut. At the start of the book, Eliza meets Harry and so begins an adorable romance that takes place over four years.

I loved Eliza and Harry whenever they were together. There is excellent banter and they understand each other in ways others don't. My biggest complaint is that we don't get to see enough of their time together. Because this book is a novella, there are short scenes of our couple together and then it jumps forward in time a year or two.

I definitely would recommend The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. Wright as it has Dare's usual humor and an adorable ship, but I just wish it had been longer.

The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. Wright is a gem. A delightful Regency romance pared down to its bare bones, this quick read is a perfect of example of what a novella can be and why I love them. There are no machinations, diversions, or distractions. Tessa Dare provides a witty, bright, engaging love story focused entirely on the winning main characters.

Owing to a pubescent scandal, Eliza Cade has been sentenced to wait to enter society until her older sisters are married. Hers is an adventurous spirit and Eliza is clamoring against the wait for her life to begin. Nonetheless, at the age of eighteen, she manages to encounter the scandalous, dissolute, no-good Mr. Harry Wright at a party when he has tucked himself away in a side room waiting for an assignation to begin. Harry takes to Eliza instantly and it is clear they are well matched, but she is too young and he too worldly for anything to come of their undeniable appeal for each other.

The novella proceeds to bounce through their subsequent encounters, some separated by a year or more, as Eliza matures and Harry tries to manage, and eventually succumbs to, his attraction to her. It is never once inappropriate or discomfiting. Rather, it progresses from “I recognize myself in you” and “you are such fun to talk to” towards deeper, mature feelings. The story is entertaining, consistently funny, and absolutely charming.

This was a warm funny story that I thoroughly enjoyed. Two interesting people learning about each other and themselves. There were no silly misunderstandings or "mysteries". I had a smile on my face when I finished. Even though this was not a full length novel, it did not feel short or rushed. It was just right.

Miss Eliza Cade is a lady in waiting and the youngest of four sisters. She's fierce, outspoken, and may be a tad impulsive. Because of her impulsive behavior, she made a foolish mistake that could have ruined her if not for her father taking measures to protect her. Because of this silly mistake, she's not allowed to come "out" in Society until all three of her older sisters are wed.

One night during a ball, Eliza is caught spying on the guests by the scandalous, dissolute, no-good Mr. Wright. Being alone with this man could ruin her reputation before all of her sisters are properly married. Which means Eliza needs to get out of there as soon as possible. But if she leaves too soon, she could get caught. Forced to stay in the room with Harry, they have a very interesting conversation. Not happy with her company by the time it's clear to leave the room, Eliza leaves in a huff hoping to never see the notorious rake again.

Eliza has not seen the last of Harry. For many years after their first encounter, these two continuously run into each other. Each and every time they see each other, it brings them closer together until a friendship is formed. It's not until many years later, Eliza finally sees Harry for who he truly is. Behind the bad reputation as a penniless rake, he is a man of honor and loyalty. He's also a man who is straight forward with Eliza. He sees exactly who she is and knows no other man can tame her wild heart but him. Not only does Harry truly see Eliza for the woman she is, but he stirs up emotions and passion inside her that she's never felt before. Only with Harry has she ever felt such things.

When Eliza finally has a chance to come "out", will she choose to settle down with a gentleman, or succumb to her desire to be with Harry?

"She promptly forgot how to breathe. "It's like this," he repeated in a low voice, just for her. "I'm not that sort of man. I don't wait for the things I want.""

The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. Wright a short and sweet, clever, funny, romantic story. I have come to the point that I believe Ms. Dare can write no wrong! I always know I'm going to have a fabulous time reading one of her delightful stories. Ms. Dare has a special way with weaving in humor, family, passion and romance that always has me coming back for more more more!

Note: page references are from an ePUB version of the book.

This delightful novella, with a sparkling heroine, a dashing hero, and wonderful secondary characters, originally appeared in the e-book anthology, Three Weddings and a Murder.

Eliza Cade and Harry Wright are two of a kind. From their provocative first meeting in her family’s morning room to their consecutive meetings through the years of the story, their attraction grows as each finds they have more in common than they know. They both have wild, untamed spirits, except Harry embraces his while Eliza feels hers must be tamped down as a lady doesn’t act that way. “Her impetuous nature was the cause of all the unhappiness in her life. She’d spent years trying to deny or overcome that part of herself—all in vain. This man saw it anyway. And, devil take him, he liked her for it."(p35)

Each chapter title begins with “An Invitation to —,” such as “An Invitation to a Party” and “An Invitation to Scandal,” following the progression of their courtship. It is more the growth of a friendship, as they fall in love and don’t even realize it. The story also takes place over a four year period, from 1810-1814, as Harry and Eliza meet occasionally at social events.

Harry is over thirty, “ancient” in Eliza’s opinion at the beginning of their story. He first sees her as a sweet, naive young girl with spirit, but soon finds himself enchanted by her attitude toward life, her love for her sisters, her ability to make him laugh, as well as her beauty.

There is a particularly poignant moment in the story, involving Georgie, Eliza’s sister, and Georgie’s fiancé, that recalls a similar event that happened to Cassandra Austen, Jane’s older sister. Tessa Dare is a Jane Austen fan and is influenced by her writing so I can’t help but think she might have had this in mind.

One thing I love about Tessa Dare's stories is her humor, and it shines throughout this novella.

Memorable moments:

"Harry felt he’d be sick. The last thing Brentley needed was a summer romance—especially not a romance with a dewy-eyed poet who, for all her reading, couldn’t outsmart the average hedgerow. Romeo and Juliet were just as idiotic, and look how that had turned out." (p21)

“An unreasoned surge of anger swelled in his breast. Not anger at her, precisely. Just anger at a society that would suffer nothing truly wild to last. Beauty must be capped with ugly bonnets. Hedges must be shaped and trimmed. The world must be colonized. Motherless rogues must inherit dukedoms. Tigresses must be tamed.” (p23)

”’It’s like this,’ he repeated in a low voice, just for her. ‘I’m not that sort of man. I don’t wait for the things I want.’” (p28)

“The ribbon ties at the back of her gown swished and floated in her wake. Adding in the brandy’s blurring effect on his brain and the torchlight’s gifts to her delicate features…she could have been a sprite or a nymph. A creature of ether and quicksilver, swimming through the murk of light.” (p38)

“He was taken with her. Smitten. He was a man in his thirties, in the throes of the most adolescent, puppyish attraction possible.” (p61)

A lovely and romantic story by one of my favorite authors.

Source: Received an e-ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This is a novella, originally from the e-book anthology Three Weddings and a Murder. As there is no murder in this book, you can rest assured only that you find a wedding. We have two characters who have been portrayed as somewhat wanton and unwilling to abide by societal rules. The titular Mr. Wright is a rake of the worst kind while Miss Eliza Cade has had her season delayed until all three of her older sisters are married due to a very youthful indiscretion. Over the course of several years, the characters repeatedly meet and come to see each other's true nature, which is far more honorable than reputation would lead one to believe.

As I expected, this was a pretty light fast predictable read-that is why I wanted to read it! I also wanted to check out Tessa Dare's writing as I've eyed her books for some time now but have never taken the time to give any a read.

Given that Wright's first name is Harry, I kind of pictured him as rapscallion Prince Harry, which is not an awful comparison. Meanwhile Eliza's name brings to mind Elizabeth Bennet, another favorable comparison. I liked both of them but didn't love them, if you know what I mean. Given that this is just a novella, there isn't really room for other characters (which is nice; I don't mind connected romance novels which introduce the other characters who will be receiving stories later on but sometimes it tends to take away from the main couple). Here each chapter is situated around a meeting between the pair and is intensely focused on them and their budding relationship.

Overall: A fun quick read, especially recommended for those who want to check out Tessa Dare's writing without necessarily committing to a full-length novel.

Notice: I have not purchased any of these titles from the store and have them on my Nook or from the library. Just wanted to give full disclosure up front since I have seen comments before in the store reviews so if you have issue with that then do not read below...

I have read ALL of Tessa Dare's novels and love them! I checked out some from my library and own all the Spindle Cove novels and novellas as well as the Werestag novella. You will not be dissapointed with any of her writings except that they end! I would like to find a "comparable" author because I just know Tessa's work to be the best for my tastes with the right amount of story, character development, setting, and spice. I was not actually a romance reader until I stumbled upon a free offering of one of her ebooks on my Nook. I know egads not a Kindle but anyways... that was how I even found this genre and now am hooked!

I have always been a fan of period romance movies and am a stickler for anything set in the Victorian (or earlier) settings of Europe which all of her books are. I do have a few other free historical romances but I just know already I won't be as pleased. I wish Tessa would go full time just writing ONLY Spindle Cove series and that PBS or BBC would pick up the rights and make an ongoing romance seriers for TV that would be hot and heavy and for adult viewers but tasteful. Maybe Netflix??? Wouldn't that be incredible! LOL

Bascially to sum all this up do not worry one bit about purchasing any of her materials. You will love having them. I have read each of the Spindle Cove series twice and plan to re-read each once a year- Yes they are that good! I stay tuned for pre-orders and have always been on of the first to get a book as it comes out.

*I received a free ARC of The Scandalous, Dissolute, No Good Mr. Wright from Avon Books via Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review*

The Scandalous, Dissolute, No Good Mr. Wright is a fun and romantic book, about the man Eliza really should stay far, far away from. When she meets him for the first time, she finds him quite different from the rake she'd imagined, though...

Because of something that happened when she was very young, Eliza is not allowed to be a débutante until all of her sisters are married off. She finds it very hard to keep waiting, she is more than ready to find herself a husband, and she is hiding in the library one evening when her parents are hosting a ball for one of her sisters. She is vehemently complaining to her youngest sister about how she wants to participate, and is very surprised when she discovers a man sitting there when her sister leaves her. Finding herself alone with Mr. Wright is the worst thing that could happen to Eliza, and she has no idea how to get out of the situation she finds herself in.

Soon, Mr. Wright and Eliza run in to each other by chance in different places, and their interactions are always great fun! Eliza can't help but feel attracted to him, but he always acts a little aloof. At the same time, she's sure her parents would never approve of him as he's rumored to have played away all his money, and he'll probably never become Duke. The debts of honor gone unpaid, expulsion from a famous gentleman's club were only the tip of the iceberg as far as the ton was concerned.

The Scandalous, Dissolute, No Good Mr. Wright, doesn't seem to be all that bad to Eliza, even if he is trying to keep his friend, the esteemed Sir Roland away from her sister Pippa. Of course, Eliza first thought it was just so he could keep his friend to himself, but as the story unfolds she finds out there is so much more to Mr. Wright than what meets the eye. Indeed, he comes to her rescue when Pippa has fainted in the countryside, but he stays away from her in any other matter. Their teasing is very enticing, and I had several moments of both big smiles and laughter while reading. Eliza has excellent repartee, and she almost always uses it to her advantage.

The Scandalous, Dissolute, No Good Mr. Wright is a very sweet historical romance, with some very humorous scenes, as well as some very hot kisses and feelings as well. I could not turn the pages quickly enough - I wanted to know more. Both about Eliza and Harry Wright. And when Eliza's back-story was told, I was laughing along with Harry. It was all very cleverly done. Of course, the common tropes of the genre are present, but they are used with ease, and never became too much.

It was also good fun to read about the supposed rake falling for the wild, young Eliza. She had no idea about the effect she had on him, and that made her even more endearing, both to the reader and to Harry! If you like to read historical romances, you really should pick up this one - I even wish there would be more to read about this seemingly mismatched pair. Tessa Dare knows very well how to spin her tales to make the readers go on a merry trip to the past with her.

"This is the year my bosoms finally arrived, and now he'll never notice."

A male voice. A darkly commanding male voice - and Eliza knew, with that brow-smacking certainty of the obvious, it must be connected to a darkly commanding male person. She wasn't alone.

There was a dangerous beast in this room. And it wasn't her.

What was England coming to when three ladies tangled with a hedgerow, and only one survived the experience? At least Miss Eliza Cade was the one left standing.

Farther up the path, Brentley and Philippa paired off. They walked alongside one another, smiling and speaking of only poets knew what. Just as they'd been doing all week.

Page-turner and addicting. ~Under the Covers

There are a few things that are very clear to me after finishing this book:
1.I will religiously read anything Tessa Dare writes because she is now one of my favorite historical authors. Why? Because I have LOVED everything she's written that I've read, period. No questions about it. Her books are always page-turners and addicting for me. I feel that I get so involved in the story, thanks to her wonderful writing, that it's as if I'm attending the balls and getting in adventures with the characters.
2.She can write the best characters! The heroine AND hero of this story are both so amazing. No wilting flowers here, but not excessively feisty either. Eliza Cade is the perfect blend of what I like in a heroine. She starts off young and bubbly. She's loyal to friends and family. When she figures out what she wants, she goes after it.
3.I realize that although we all love the bad boy hero, there's something better...the bad boy hero who is really a good boy at heart. Mr. Wright surprised me in the end and I couldn't help but want one of my own.
4.The woman has a talent for short stories. This is really an art. It's not easy to write a short story about characters we've never heard about, about lives we've never cared for before, and make us fall in love and immerse ourselves in just a short 100 pages. This is now the second time that Tessa Dare rocks with a short story that I've read.
5.I can't help but LOVE the title. Even though I usually can't remember it.

Are those enough reasons why you should read this book?

For a novella, I usually prefer the couple to have know each other previously for the story to work better in the shorter space but in this one they don't...and it still works! Miss Eliza Cade made a foolish mistake when she was younger and pays for it now by not being able to have a Season until her three older sisters are married. She unintentionally meets the notorious rake, Harry Wright and they both capture each others attention. A bit of time passes and a chance encounter reacquaints them, and the desire and attraction still burns. With clever chapter titles and superb writing skills, you will fall for this couple and hope they overcome the obstacles that continue to arise. Tessa Dare is an auto buy author for me and she proves why, even in the shorter story length. 4 stars

This was a quick, fun and laugh out loud read. It was about 144 pages. Great book to curl up with during these long winter months. Isn't the gown on the cover just breathtaking... I just love that color PINK!!

It may have been a novella, but Tessa Dare gave you a beginning, a climax and an end worthy of any long length novel. I liked the layout of the chapters, our hero and heroine bump into one another over the course of this book. With each interaction, their friendship and love blossoms. It was not a "love at first sight" romance book, honestly our hero despised of our hero from the beginning.. I the ending was just what a romance junkie would love to see, a beautiful and warming HEA. I enjoyed this wonderful tale.

SCANDALOUS,DISSOLUTE,NO-GOOD MR. WRIGHT by Tessa Dare is an exciting Regency Historical Romance set in 1814 England. A fast paced, quick, fun read filled with misunderstandings, passion,a bit of grief, and lots of love with a laugh or two included. Miss Eliza Cade,is waiting no longer, she is not allowed in "polite" Society because of a youthful mistake. And of course Mr. Harry Wright just may be Mr. Right. A scandalous affair to be sure. Although, all is not what it seems. A must for anyone looking for quick fun read filled with passion and a notorious rake. Received for an honest review from the publisher and Above the Treeline.

I've been reading romance since the mid-80's. I've been through thousands of Scots, pirates and businessmen. This novella was really good. The hero was in his 30s. The heroine was seventeen when she met him. Old school and not in a bad semi-Woodiwiss way either. She was plucky. Her description and identification of him as the devil was CUTE! I loved how she ended up fixing his cravat. Although this was a novella I thought of it as a complete story. I really liked it and recommend it for historical fans. Especially for those who have not yet had the chance to read Tessa Dare. Good job!

I must admit I was swayed by so many positive reviews to read this story, but I think I became truly disenchanted when the hero admits he likes the heroine because she would marry her sisters off to tinkers if she could get the chance.

I don’t like the heroine or the hero much at all. I got to page 78 at a loss and rather bored, since I couldn’t spot a redeeming quality in either of them. The story itself reads underdeveloped. The characters come off as shallow. The heroine will automatically blame the hero, when she doesn’t even know if he’s at fault. Plus, the heroine isn’t all that smart, so she winds up with a rather horrible lot in life. She must wait for all her sisters to marry, because her father knows if she was to be ‘out’ she would tangle them all up in ruination, and then none of her sisters would ever be married. Yes, that type of heroine. She sounds TSTL.

The story reads as a light, fluffy piece, which doesn’t really make me take notice of the characters or their story. Two years pass in the story by page 82. The heroine Eliza is such a dim-witted dolt that it’s hard to take the story seriously. She could open her mouth and ask things, but it so much more amusing following her scattered train of thought. Not.

And then it comes out that the hero has sacrificed his good name, his money, everything, to pay off a debt that a friend racked up in a gambling hell who also got a young woman pregnant. But beyond the characters, the love story (not that there was anything to write home about after the story time of 2 years), I found the tale to be boring.

The heroine didn’t have a goal, nor did the hero. There was nothing they really needed. Nothing of importance anyway, since two years lapsed.

This short novella had everything I want in a story - charming characters, an edgy hero, and a love that evolves over time. The repartee between the Eliza and Harry had me laughing out loud in places. Despite the fact this is a novella, the story was long enough to showcase the growing love between them.

If you like books that start out lighthearted and grab you during the first chapter, you will enjoy this book. My only complaint is that it ended too soon. I could tell by the title that this is going to be a lighthearted romance, and I was not disappointed for a second. BRAVO!!!
