There are many anthologies of "Best Loved" poems. I was hoping to find the Kindle version of the book that my English teacher gave me in high school around 30 years ago but this wasn't it. This anthology seems to have selected one poem per author as "best loved" and I can't say that I agree with the editor's picks, though it does have many famous poems in it. I have been selecting poems at random and have not read the entire book, so it's possible that parts of the book may be different than what I've found so far.

This is an extremely handy and affordable collection of some of the great poems of the English language. The choice appears to be for accessibility rather than the "Grand" and that's fine with me. I have a paper copy of the book kicking around the house. Now I have it in my Kindle, too, for the train, buses, and waiting rooms.

100 Best-loved poems is just what the title says: 100 poems well-loved. The Dover Thrift Edition is just what it says, too: a thrifty no-frills book. It's handy to have these poems, but they have been presented better in other editions.

It is a great book, but when I received it, I first thought it was used. The cover had a little scratch and one of the edges was a little indented. But other than that the book is great for everyone who loves poetry. And the price is also perfect.

Poems for introspection and just deep diving. Some of these poems I've read many times before and others seem new to me. It matters not when the poem is noticed it is the fact that it is noticed. An unread poem is useless. A poem points the way. Heart, that way, soul that way. All paths lead home, travel on my friend. Hotep

While I like some of the poetry in this collection, it is mostly the predictable, old, stuffy English fluff. Nothing by Rimbaud or Baudelaire, in fact I don't think there is a single poem in translation which automatically disqualifies it as far as I'm concerned, because if I were to put together an anthology of poetry, maybe half or less would be English-language. This is a decent starting point for anyone just getting into poetry but don't stop here. There are so many amazing poets (Neruda, Rimbaud, Rilke, etc.) that aren't included in this anthology.

Interface: Poetry and Selected Readings, Volume One, 2010

I was looking for a poetry book of ancient poems and found a lot more. Many of the poems are popular ones and are somewhat ancient. These are poems written in a foreign tongue and not the common tongue but a lot of technical skills has gone behind it. But the paper quality is very poor and the cover design is boring to look at. You cannot beat the price though.

This book does contain 100 of favorite and well known pieces of poetry. I bought a paper copy as a gift for my elderly mother and a Kindle edition for myself. The problem is the print! This is extremely small print making it difficult to read clearly in the paper version. The Kindle version is difficult to navigate and find the poems you have selected to read. Great material but hard to read.

This is a nice little collection of classical poetry, a great starter book for those who'd like to explore many different poets and styles of writing. This book includes many beloved and well-known works.

This Kindle book would be great, except that it's full of word mistakes and typos. Also, it's not very well indexed for searching, which is one of the reasons I went with Kindle over a printed version. All in all, I couldn't recommend this, even at the cheap price.

It's hard to lose at this price, but this is not a great book of poetry. I purchased it for my 5th grader, whose class is starting a unit on poetry. The selections included are hit and miss as representations of their authors, and not all of them are very accessible to the average reader.

The content is OK (but not likely "best loved" in relation to many others). Any collection that can't be navigated to selected items is of little use to me as I do not wish turn multiple pages to reach desired items.

Philip Smith has assembled a very good sampling of the best poetry in the English language. We read Marlowe, Shakespeare, Donne, Jonson, Herrick, Milton, Gray, Blake, Burns, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, Keats, both Brownings, Longfellow, Poe, Whitman, Dickinson, Hardy, Housman, Yeats, Frost, Pound, Millay, Cummings, Auden, Dylan Thomas, and many others. This inexpensive Dover edition is an excellent buy.

The collection is as advertised: these are the best-loved poems in the English language. These are familiar poems, poems that are accessible to casual readers of poetry, poems that continue to resonate today. Smith's compilation is fun to read and to reread. Any teacher would find it ideal for introductory English literature classes, honors high school or college.

What is missing? This collection excludes translations of classical poetry, poetry of the non-English speaking world, and contemporary English-speaking poets. But this little book contains enough gems to satisfy any treasure hunter.

Looking for a more eclectic anthology? See 100 Poems by 100 Poets compiled by Harold Pinter, Geoffrey Godbert, and Anthony Astbury. They present what they consider (by unanimous decision, often after heated argument) to be the best poem by each of the 100 best poets in the English language. Their choices only occasionally overlap with the better known selections in Philip Smith's Dover edition.

Another good choice is One Hundred and One Famous Poems, compiled by Roy J. Cook in 1927, that has long been a favorite anthology of British and American poets. It is an interesting collection, as it includes many poets that are now less familiar or even forgotten, but who were popular in the early part of the twentieth century. Take a look at this anthology. You will be pleasantly surprised. It has been reprinted many times and it is not difficult to find.

You can see the table of contents for specific titles, but in general, this work has all the typical poems you will encounter in literature classes. They are timeless and a great way to learn about society throughout history. I believe every high school student should have read these by the time they graduate.

Dover has always been known for making fascinating books available for a song - here's one you can have for even less than a song! For a mere 80 cents, you get, as the title promises, 100 poems, best-loved poems at that. A volume to cherish, or to give as gifts - suitable for anybody, of any age, whether they love poems or need a place to start.

I like this collection. I never get tired of reading poets like Longfellow, Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, Frost, Tennyson, and Donne. These writers inspired my new poetry collection. Available here amzn.com/1608805476.

Page 66 contains the poem "Oh Captain! My Captain!" Unfortunately Smith included the original, unedited version Whitman first wrote. It is a lesser know and unused version of the poem, and Whitman himself edited the poem before publication. This would all be fine, yet Smith makes no mention concerning the discrepancy of the two versions.

For me, I guess I prefer a book by a single author. I get to find out about the person behind the words more when I read a book entirely by one person. It is a good compilation and if you like that kind of thing, then go for it. For myself, I just like it better to be a single pen. It has great poets in it. William Shakespeare, Wordworth, Shelly, Poe, Whitman, Dickinson, Frost and more. I guess it could be use like a teaser, to get you interested in more poets and set you off to find a complete works by the ones you liked. There is a bit of history on each one before the poem, so that is nice too.

This is a perfect little volume of well loved poems for every occasion: weddings, funerals, religious and secular holidays, Thanksgiving dinner readings, graduation ceremonies, school or church groups, or a touching sentimental gift.

"Swimming the Storm" is a poetry book that would make you
associate with the poet's journey through life. You will experience his anger, love, heartbreak, desperation, joy, reconciliation, acceptance, and much more. Michael Coulombe confronts his pain and love effectively. He expresses his state of being emotionally and visually with stimulating words.

I love the poems: "Need," "Tear," "Why am I the Enemy?" "A Kiss," Bit I found "Anger" one of my top favorite poems. I just love that one; And You will be challenged as you read "Swimming the Storm." I highly recommend it to anyone.

This book is titled ' the one- hundred best loved poems' .By whom? All the poems are by writers in English? Are there any other languages and people in the world?

Secondly. Where is the evidence that these poems are the most loved even by English language readers? Many are certainly very popular, frequently anthologized. My guess is that today a fair share of the poems in this anthology are not widely read.

Now that I have been a grump, let me say that the anthology is rich with great, and certainly some of the most loved poems in the English language. In fact some of these poems have been published so many times in so many different anthologies one wonders what ( except for the price of the volume) is the advantage of reading them here.

Nonetheless any collection of great poetry is a celebration. And there is much great poetry here . Go down the list of the major anthologies of English and American poetry, and you will find the poets listed here.

The poetry in this book covers a period from the middle ages to modern times and is arranged in order of date. You will find well known names such as Tennyson, Keats, Wordsworth to name a few.
That said, I was surprised by how many of the verses I had never heard of or read before although this is called '100 Best Loved Poems'.Some of the poems featured here are quite obscure. There are some well known ones such as 'Charge of the light brigade' and 'Daffodils' but if you are looking for a book that will help you brush up on all of those half remembered snippets of poetry from your schooldays, then this may not be the choice for you. Having said that, this is a very low price for a collection of poems and if you do want something a little different, then at this price it may be worth adding to your bookshelf.

I don't think I would consider these the best loved poems. Yes, they are by classic authors. but in all honesty I found this to be just an average read of poems I could of found off the net.

My suggestion is, if your looking for brilliant poetry to check out Theological Immortal Romance by author Kevin Brian Wright here on the store.
