Besides being another thrilling western story by Zane Grey, this one delves into the intricacies of the Mormon cult and the problems it creates in peoples lives. Although the story is fiction, it is good historical fiction and I have recommended it to many friends.

An excellent adventure of the Old West. Characters spring to life and you can just see, almost smell, the country Zane Grey is writing about. He has their actions and language down pat. This is far better than the earlier edited version which seemed to omit a lot of detail. Grey's best book by far in a group of fine western tales.

I got this book for free and loved it. So deskriptive and beautifully written, it set my spirit fire and run wild through the dreamy expances of wilderness that are so eloquently described in this book.

A nice easy diversion. Enjoyed Jane Withersteen's character. Complex and torn, not unlike many in today's society who are trying to reconcile childhood teaching and/or religion with the reality of the world that unfolds.

Never read any Zane Grey before and saw Purple Sage available in public domain so suggested it for our book group. I was quite happy with it. Zane.s not great with dialogue but a good storyteller, and quite descriptive. I could actually descrie the scenes clearly in my minds eye.

I read this book in elementary school half a century ago. It was the first Zane Gray I read. It was just as compelling today. Let your imagination run wild and enjoy.

Be warned though: it's not kind to Mormons.

I appreciate Zane Greys ability to paint a picture of the books changing scenery with words. Made me feel like I was riding my horse through the purple Sage, then the canyons, draws, up the steep hills and banks.

My Father felt it to be the most beautiful of writings. Having just read it I have brought him alive, once again in my mind and heart. The writing about the geography of Utah in 1912 is not only beautiful poetic prose, if there can be such a thing this is it, it is also calender art. A photograph of the most beautiful of landscapes. The affection of the characters for each other could not be more beautifully written. The love, hate experience more graphic and felt is remarkable. I loved the book, and the author, and my father.

Driving long distances during my summer breaks, I have to have novels to stay awake. Riders of the Purple Sage was excellent - exciting from start to finish. If you are a cowboy or cowboy lover, you will live the story as you listen. For lovers, it's a treat.Riders of the Purple Sage

This was one of the best westerns I've read. :-) It had the makings of a great read. Kept me wanting to get back to the book to see where it was headed next. I'll be reading more Zane in the future.

Grey is beautifully descriptive and the pace is slow moving, so the story takes a while to develop. Once I relaxed into the book and became accustomed to Grey's writing style, I really enjoyed this book.

I am an avid fan of western novels but could barely get through this one... Too much detail where it wasn't needed... Too much about characters that didn't need to be told....too much story...just too long...

Grey creates complex characters the reader can relate to while painting stunning landscapes of the west with his words. The books explores the conflicts in 1871 Utah between Morons and who they call "Gentiles." The main character, a Moron, is conflicted as the tenets of her religion relate to the reality of her being an independent woman. Beautifully written.

Having read the book abot 50 years ago I was still impressed with the plot and Zane Greys
description of the countryside, although he sometimes goes on too long. The twists and turns
were intriguing.

Excellent classic western... that's why I chose it. And since lm spiritual but not religious it would have been good if this book would have been required reading for anyone thinking they might want a Mormon for president.
