My husband has a passion for bodybuilding and just recently decided to compete. A struggle for me as a mother and his supportive wife is cooking dinner that everyone likes. Your book is great for all of us. I'm a fitness freak too so I love your lean recipes and my daughter eats everything as well. Keep up the good work!

This book was full of flavorful natural recipes. Definitely worth the money. This book is great for those of us who want to eat healthy but can't seem to come up with any ideas on our own or don't know what to throw together pre/post workout. I'd love to see more recipes from the author.

I bought this book for the purpose of getting more options of how to cook food that is both tasteful and still in my calorie requirements to lose fat. The recipes are really great, easy to cook and fulfill those requirements.

This book is great. It really taught me about macro and micronutrients, how to eat for fitness and health and not have it be gross. This is a cookbook, not an exercise book! Lots of simple yet yummy 'white dude food' in here. Haha. Some spicier things but mostly very palatable. You won't regret it.

Sidenote - I was impressed with the diction this book used. The author comes off incredibly knowledgeable and intelligent.

I love cooking and have a large collection of cookbooks, the majority of them being healthy cookbooks. However, I don't always have time to make complicated and time consuming recipes with a long list of ingredients. I tried to do weekly meal prep several times - baking some chicken breast, sweet potatoes, veggies etc. for lunches and snacks - but they always end up very bland because I am trying to keep it simple and I am tired of choking down another dry chicken breast. This cookbook has recipes simple enough to use for weekly meal prep or easy weeknight dinners, but they actually taste good. No, not every recipe is gourmet cooking, but they are recipes I will actually use. I will save the more involved recipes for the weekends. All of the recipes we have tried so far has been great. I am currently cutting calories, and the leaner recipes are low in calories but still pretty filling. A great compliment to Thinner Leaner Stronger.

Great, simple recipes for lean, protein-filled food. What more could you want? The recipes in this book seem to be very healthy but perfect for anyone who is physically active. It's not the best collection of recipes and some of them I believe I've seen before in other books but it does offer real simple meals that will be effective in building muscle and burning fat.

I would highly recommend this book. Guys that work out and are looking to cook healthy, this book is for you. I am not a great cook but it has worked well for me so far. It fits together with his other book "Bigger, Leaner, Stronger".

This book is AWESOME!
I love the recipes in this book, it's a great buy for everyone seeking to start with meal-prepping and planning.
There are a few things I'd like to see improve in the next edition/book, though:
* More images - of the process and of all the other recipes. It seems like images are only available for selected recipes which is kind of disappointing since you don't always know what to expect.
* More alternatives. Sometimes it's hard to get the exact ingredients (especially to readers from other countries).

This is our new go-to recipe book! The recipes are very simple, they do not take long (most meals you can make in a half hour, and they are healthy! I love that it tells you how long it takes to prep/cook and how many calories are in the meal. The servings sizes are low too which is perfect for us as it is just my husband and I eating the meals right now! I would definitely recommend this cook book!

This book is great! It contains 120 super-easy to cook recipes.

Pros:
- Recipe descriptions are short and to the point
- Each recipe is accompanied by the number of calories, grams of proteins, carbs and fats making it super-easy to keep track of your nutrition
- Contains recipes with chicken, beef, pork, pasta, sides, salads, snacks, smoothies, breakfast dishes and deserts!
- Recipes are categorized as "recipes for getting lean" and "recipes for getting big"
- Even though only a few recipes were not to my liking, 99% of the recipes are delicious! As a plus, Mike throws in a section explaining how you can marinate your meat or make home-made dressings, in order to give a kick of taste!
- Every recipe comes with an estimated time for prepping and cooking
- Recipes usually yield 2 or 4 portions
- Each recipe has their ingredients list at the top, making easy to prepare your shopping cart when going to the grocery store

I wish there were more recipes!

I've tried only a couple of the recipes so far. I must say that they are definitely palatable (especially when compared to traditional diet food). However I found that I would often have to add a little seasoning of my own, but everyone is different. My main concern with the book is that it fails to list single serving sizes which makes for inaccurate guesswork. I hope that this is corrected in future editions of this well-needed book.

Also, in the interest of macronutrient accuracy it might be helpful to list brand names for the ingredients as the nutritional facts tend to vary from one brand of a product to another.

Having previously bought TLS for myself and BLS for my adult son, as well as the original Shredded Chef (in PDF), I was interested in getting this updated and hardbound edition. I bought one for my son for Christmas and got the Kindle version for myself. The book itself is beautiful, with great photography. The recipes are great, delicious, and not just for those interested in Mike Matthews's strength-training program. With that said, the editing process doesn't seem to have been a complete success. As a previous post noted, some of the measurements are off, and in the case of at least the Matcha Tea protein bars, entire ingredients are missing from the ingredients list, so if you have not seen those recipes elsewhere (many are available online), you may not know, for example, how much matcha tea to use, how much protein powder to use, or what kind of protein powder to use (whey, for example, does not work well as a substitute for brown-rice protein powder with this recipe). Fortunately, a lot of the recipes allow you some flexibility to guess and substitute if you're adventurous, but for those who prefer precision in recipes, you'll want to exercise patience and use the internet to try to fill in the gaps.

When people think of dieting, they think of bland boring food. This is not the case here. I have tried several recipes, and am not disappointed yet. I enjoy clean eating, and this book was a very nice add to my collection. Easy recipes with regular food, not some crazy where do I buy that ingredient stuff.

Great cook book, but goes better with more knowledge. Using just a cook book is like trying to wear only one shoe or play 18 holes of golf with just a 9 iron... you need to amass a full "tool box" in order to try and fix or work on anything in life. Check out "Muscle for Life" or Mike Matthews, good solid researched health topics broken down into small words for the masses. :-)

Much more than a cookbook, Mike Matthews explains the science of diet, nutrition, and body building in detail using comprehensible language and footnoted sources! He encourages readers to eat more seafood (Lemon-Garlic Shrimp with Asparagus and Seared Cod with No-Cook Caper Sauce are my favorites), explores the pros and cons of eating organic, and uses accessible ingredients (and not too many of them). A good gift for a 20-something male cooking for himself for the first time.

Incredible recipes that work well with Mikes books. Taste great, all layed out for you to get a better hold on your diet. I cannot say enough good things about Mikes program and all of his books. They have all majorly improved my life and i even use his no bulls*** supplements that are incredible. I strongly suggest you buy this and read his bigger leaner stronger series.

I only take it down to four stars because on some recipes the author is somewhat lazy and provides imprecise measurements for amounts of ingredients that allow for too much subjectivity e.g. what is "one packet" when an ingredient comes in multiple packet sizes at the store? Hard to tell. Otherwise this book is excellent, provides a lot of actually delicious recipes that help you reach your goals and give you ideas on how to change any recipes you already have to help give them more nutritional oomph. Overall I recommend this book, always nice to add some variety to your meals and training!

So far, I'm very impressed by all the information presented in this book. Very well researched and I really appreciate how it is all laid out. I'll update in a few weeks after I've tried out a few recipes.

Overall, I think this is an ok book but didn't reach its potential nearly as well as Mike's other books.

I have pretty little experience in the kitchen. My office has a great cafeteria, and I eat out a lot (targeting nutritious meals still); unfortunately it's difficult to cut without knowing exact food content, so I got this book. I use a few of Mike's supplements and have read his other books.

I've tried about a dozen recipes so far and read through the others. I would like if the book had more details and more descriptions on how to shop and prepare meals. I suspect most people reading the book want to make a meal and then eat it several days in a row, rather than make it for a few people at dinner. Given that, the ability to package and re-heat is pretty important, and I think a few of the recipes have been pretty bad after a re-heat in the microwave.

Judging the recipes, not just the results:

Pear-Cranberry Beef Tenderloin 4/5 - tastes great, but beef tenderloin alone is quite good. It's really just beef with a side dish. I think it doesn't suggest to cook the beef long enough, and it seems more effective (if feasible) to cook the steak fresh each time rather than make four at once.

Honey Glazed Chicken 1/5 - this had almost no flavor. I threw away what I cooked after having half of one serving. I'm not very surprised, since basting bland chicken with a light sauce generally yields little result.

Pineapple Chicken 3/5 - Edible but not very good. It's hard to re-heat chicken with pineapple. You don't want the pineapple to be as hot as the chicken.

Chicken Yakitori 3/5 - Same: edible but not good. Maybe a little worse than the pineapple chicken. It tastes pretty good fresh, but re-heated after a day it wasn't very good.

Cajun Pork Chops 4/5 - Decent. I like spicy food quite a bit. I might make this again. It required cooking longer than the instructions indicated.

Orange Julius shake 4.5/5 - I have been making this every day. I like it quite a bit. Deducting half a start because I think the macros cited are deceptive: this is really two shakes worth, so you need to be prepared for a lot.

Baked Raisin Oatmeal 3/5 - there's no picture in the book, but on the website it looks delicious. I've tried this several times because it looked so good, but I've never been to make it close to the picture. It always dries out and gets hard by the time the top isn't soft anymore. Substituting rice protein seemed to help quite a bit with dryness but makes it really thick.

It may also be that I'm not doing something right in cooking these or re-heating, but I'm following the directions provided.

It would have been nice to have some recipes with ham also or at least discuss why it doesn't have any.

A few of the recipes say to use powdered milk, which I've read has oxidized cholesterol and is not good for your health.

There's a pudding recipe, but it seems like all puddings are fairly unhealthy. No suggestions on which kind to buy.

I wish all of the recipes had pictures. It would also be nice if they weren't stylized, so you could see if what you make matches the expectation.

The bonus spreadsheet is handy for aligning recipes.

The first recipe I tried, Breaded Parmesan Pork Chops, was amazing and introduced a new protein I never use in my diet. I've been building muscle on Mike's program for close to a year now and finally decided to get serious about reducing my body fat percentage. This book is the perfect tool for high protein, easy to make recipes and takes all the work out of counting calories. Give it a try definitely worth the money.

I know the author is a muscled body but I feel like he's also a muscle head after reading the first chapter... There are certainly good tips in the book but there is so much inconsistency! He writes as if he's talking! For god's sake at least plan ahead about what you wants to write about before you write it! This book feels like a polished rough draft.... He just decided to jot down his ideas one day and got too lazy to go back and reorganize it so he ran some grammar checks and decided to publish it.

So many confusing things! Especially when he's talking about carbs. First he list a lot of stuff thats bad for you then he say they are good for you then he say they are bad for you and repeats! He also use the worst possible reference ever...

Also... Either all or at least half of the pictures in the book are not what the actual food looks like. He probably had the editor look up pictures from the internet and put it in there because if you look at the ingredients, it doesn't match the pictures half of the time.

I bought this hoping it would be more of a nutrition guide.... It's just couple useful rule of thumb and lots of recipe with fake pictures... The recipes are also very mediocre... This is a book of mediocrity

Just started using the cookbook and their appear to be many great recipes. However, at least one recipe has missing ingredients: No-Bake Matcha Green Tea Fudge Bars. Matcha powder and protein powder are used in the directions for the bars but in the ingredient list there is no reference and no amounts listed.
I went on the internet for similar recipes and it appears one should use 4 TSP. Matcha powder and 8 scoops of Vanilla Brown Rice Protein Powder. People caution not to use whey protein as the resulting product will not solidify. That being said, I enjoy the book.

A friend highly recommended this book. I got it yesterday and read through the entire thing. It's exactly what I've been looking for. I've been moving toward a healthier lifestyle for several years, but each time I get really fit I hit a wall and my progress stops. I've started counting all my calories, tracking everything I eat, all my exercise, and now I'm prepping food for 4 days at a time so I don't have to guess what I need to eat. These recipes are prefect for my goals. I made the basil chicken last night and it was amazing. Plus I made a huge batch so I have 10 more servings in my fridge. I can't wait to make all of these recipes while working towards my fitness goal. Definitely worth the price for anyone who is getting serious about keeping track of everything that they eat and wants a good resource with all of the information you need to eat well for either weight loss or mass gain.

I'm a bit dissapointed. I thought the cookbook would bring new twists to spice up what you eat to stay healthy, but there were only handful of new, interesting, recipes and the rest were basic things not warranting even a page. By basic, I mean a "cuban tortilla" where the ingredients are ham, pickle, mustard, swiss cheese on a whole wheat tortilla. Or even the cobb salad where its such a basic list of ingredients and fairly standard that you wonder why its in there. Anyways, from someone who likes to cook and try new things this cookbook did not do it for me.

This book is excellent! I bought it a few weeks ago and especially liked the introduction prior to the recipes. I have utilized the recipes and love them as well. I highly recommend, especially if you want to live a healthy lifestyle.

This book has a lot of educational information about nutrition, as well as easy to follow healthy recipes. I have been following Michael Matthews program of exercise and nutrition laid out in this book as well as Bigger Leaner Stronger and have lost over 30 pounds in 9 months. The recipes in the book are not difficult to prepare and don't need exotic ingredients. It has helped me to expand my menu and cooking repetoir with healthy options. It's well laid out and organized into categories by protein type and meals. It also has complete nutrition information including macro counts. If you use my fitness pal apps they are listed there as well. Well worth the price.

Just made the harvest chicken stew. Made 6 servings, freezed up for later. BIG MISTAKE. The most nasty dish i have ever tasted. Steamed overcooked chicken breast + cooked, dry brown rice was HEAVEN compared to this. Was gonna give one star but there are ok dishes in the book so i give 3

Every protein, carb, and fat gram is accounted for and blends to create easy-to-make healthy food that actually tastes good. I've used this cookbook exclusively to map out my daily maco-nutrients for weight loss and have seen weekly results without cravings. Enjoy!
