I gave 3 stars because 2 stars means, "I don't like it" which isn't true. This series is a fun read but it could have been a whole bunch better. Basically, it needs editing. Lot's of folks mentioned getting and using a spell-checker and they sure were right! But the need for professional editing can't be understated, especially with these books.

I knew what I was getting into prior to buying his first book. It's hard to get published, but I really appreciate a writer who strikes out and does it on their own or with minimal help. Throughout the years I've found some truly excellent writers by picking up a book based on the cover or teaser alone. This series could have been so much better with just a little objective reading and then a solid rewrite.

I picked up the free reading guide for this entire series. I really don't know how the author can follow it let alone prospective readers! It's really too bad, tho. There's so much potential for these books. In this guide I was noticing the upcoming books for the series. I believe there's 4 more books to be published yet this year! ( around 4, maybe more and some have already come out) I hope he will slow it down and take some time with these upcoming stories.

Don't let the cover pictures of Tanis dissuade you from reading these. She isn't just a pretty face. I found this a very engrossing series. There is very good character development and strong story lines. Give it time to develop. The ships and AI are pretty much characters themselves. I had a disconnect as I came to Destiny Lost because the story shifted to different characters and time lines. I had to re-read a couple of chapters to see if I missed something but the explanations came forth as the story put things back together. I like the very strong lead character with, sometimes, superhuman abilities, since this is a fiction anyway. Very tight futuristic explanation and use of time and space manipulation, and nano technology. Very believable in the far future.

I read this series for free, as it was available from Prime Reading. I absolutely loved it. I've read the reviews pissing and moaning about grammatical errors, which I noticed as well. But let's give Cooper his due, by recognizing the gargantuan task of cranking out intense drama, page after page, series after series. He's a miraculous writer that never misses a beat.
Tanis Richards is unbelievably tough and realistically evolving and vulnerable. But, just as I was beginning to think Cooper had created the best and fiercest female character in SF history, he brings us Serafina, in Destiny Lost.
In fact the only thing I can complain about is that his other books in the Orion Wars series are $4.99 apiece. So, he needs an editor or proofreader? I volunteer. As a matter of fact, I will willingly read anything this author has ever written, free of charge, including his grocery list. And yes... he is that good.
The Event (The Survivors Book One) :: Forgotten (The Forgotten) (Volume 1) :: (Book 1 in the Hal Spacejock series) - A Robot Named Clunk :: Ship Wrecked: Stranded on an alien world :: El marciano / The Martian (Spanish Edition)

I thought the first book was an exciting whodunit scifi romp that introduces you to this new universe.

The second book subverts your expectations and throws you in a survival story on the brink of space. But the cracks start to show. Characters seem appear out of nowhere, and you start to give the author latitude. You are aren't sure where it is going, but you're willing to see.

Book three--Building Victoria--never pays off. Time skips ahead rapidly but with limited payoff. The confrontation with the final villain is rushed and unexplained. And then the Intrepid rushes off in the last two chapters and hangs on a cliff hanger...to promote a whole new trilogy. The end result is a deep sense of time wasted.

I wanted this to work, but it just doesn't. Disappointing.

Ok here's the thing. This is a great read. Many plot twists. Lots of wonderful characters. But hers the problem, it Leeds into a number of other books.and those into many spinoffs and a prequel or two. I'm sure a 100 or so books from now we might have it all wrapped up... maybe. I think the only way to read this world of books is to get Kindle unlimited. You see once you start, you will want to eat the whole lot! Even worse, they and great "Quick read" books, so will just want to grab the next one in the series.

At any rate, be warned, start this series at your own risk!!!

This was a good read that I have enjoyed over the past month. Although I have not read any of the precursor tales that lead up to the adventure of the Intrepid, I feel like Tanis Richards is a relatable character with whom most could empathize. The books were a pretty simple read though there was some jargon that I'm not sure if I was supposed to be able to understand (when the main characters have to ask for translations I'm not sure if we are meant to get it).

My biggest qualms came with basic editing. There were many instances of improper punctuation at the end of sentences, incorrect uses of the words thought, through, and though (mixed them up a bit) and occasional extra words that didn't have place in the sentence (probably a result of leaving the draft of the story and coming back to it mid-sentence). This didn't take TOO much away from the story, but the saga would have stood out a lot more in my mind as a well written piece of work.

I also have an undecided relationship with Tanis' obsession with eating "BLTs." On one hand I can see why it makes the distant future a little more relatable with the presence of well known sandwich types. On the other hand, it seems a bit campy and wholly unnecessary.

Overall, I would say that the writing style is meant to appeal to a broad audience across all spectrums of reading abilities. There are a few intimate scenes that unfold in The Intrepid Saga, so be warned, this isn't a book you should read online at work (or maybe it is, I don't know your life) or let your kids read this if you take issue with sexuality (to be fair I can count on one hand how many sexual encounters I remember from all four books).

I couldn't put it down! It grabbed me from the first word. The characters are well-developed and engaging. A must-read Love the hard SF aspect. It's obviously well-researched. Fast-paced, interesting. Held my attention from beginning to end. Strong women leaders - a treat! Aeon14 is a fascinating universe. The quips and one-liners are pure Cooper. Never gets boring. Really innovative tech! Total page-turner. An enticing and and intriguing view of the future

As a Science fiction fan j can only say this kept my interest. The fact that it has a strong female character,no several female characters with great inner strength was amazing. The male char as categorization as tyrants or useless wasn't what I was expecting. The strong male characters do support the ones they love and yet step back so they can do their thing. I love the AI, the synchronization between both human and AI is amazing. Bob, t love Bob. Helen not so much. Read it see what you think.

Very interesting story. The heroes seem incredibly hard to kill though, even when they've been killed. I especially like the treatment of AI and their relationships to the characters. I'm about 80% through and am not looking forward to it ending.

One distracting problem is that there are grammatical errors from time to time. I get the impression that the book was written for electronic publication and not proof-read before publishing. Nevertheless it's definitely worth the read.

This series has taken over my free time, for two weeks now I've wanted to do nothing more but read everything in this world. The core books are catchy and the spin off Novellas are entertaining. The author makes some interesting character choices and could use some more diversity in his characters but at the same time you can place yourself in the world easily enough. This is worth a read for any fluffy sci-fi fan.

Tanis Richards decides to leave an increasingly negative and bizarre Earth on a colony ship to the stars. But someone doesn't want them to leave...Engaging characters, interesting plots, and some really speculative hard science. Space battles ensue, and Tanis has a lot to gain...and lose. I definitely recommend this omnibus, and will read the next in the series.

Great read, unexpected character developments and actual plots with. Space battles you can imagine as your adrenilin pumps your heart faster and faster. Warning the writing style is addictive. I don't normally like books that jump from character to character, but this is different like a maestro pulling in instruments to swell music Cooper swirls a tale around to entangle his audience. Enjoy.

The characters are diverse and I enjoyed reading the books. The interaction between the people and the AIs was new to me but fit in well with the storylines. However, while I did enjoy the saga, I was a little annoyed that the story continues past it. That said, this is still a very read and I do recommend it. But beware, you will get hooked on them.

Really have enjoyed this series. I love the characters even though the technology is somewhat dubious. Still the story arc was a fun romp covering dozens to hundreds of years. There is a follow-up series which I'm going to download to continue following the adventures of Tanis Richards.

I really enjoyed reading this series. It was hard to put down and jump back into real life. Exciting storyline and great future tech ideas.
Can't wait to read The Orion War books next.

From other reviews: Yes, there are some errors in the writing, but I can ignore stuff like that. I probably made a mistake once or twice too.

A well knit action packed adventure. Tanis Richards, our hero, goes from one adventure to the next while trying to keep her fellow space colonists alive in a universe that only wants their technology at any cost. The story fits together well and the characters are a bit shallow but interesting.
The follow-on books are enjoyable and also fit well with the overall storyline. Well worth the read for those of us interested in science fiction and warfare.

The series was quite imaginative, it needlessly went off the rails - I wish the author had stuck to the adventure and kept it clean. Such a shame, as otherwise I would not have had to take back my recommendation.
Richard Fox has done hard SF better, and with class I might add.

Tania slowly evolves becoming an increasingly interesting female leader/ hero. This series continues to expand the abilities of the Endeners and their impact on the rest of the human occupied space. Lots of interesting complex people and space opera action.

An entertaining read that keeps you reading. Traveling places you never thought of. More trouble than you ever thought of. My only complaint is that some of the story has to much detail that starts to get boring after a while and makes me lose some interest as I try to follow the story. But overall it's pretty good.

Finally a book set that feels as long as a traditional paper novel! Books 1-3 flowed well into a seamless story. Book 4 started on a tangent and then toward the middle got back on track somewhat merging all the new detailed characters into the story.
This took a few days to recreationally read and it was enjoyable.

Loved this book and the way the characters work as a team at every turn and obstacle. Tanis is obviously the focus but each character develops over the books and becomes a needed part of the group. Add to that the space setting and it was prefect for any SciFi loving reader.

Very good science fiction. The author does a good job of developing characters and the relationships between them. There is mystery and suspense and descriptive action sequences that make for a very good story. The space genre is filled with futuristic ideals of space travel and changed technology and worlds in our future. I thought it was well done and thought out and very creative. There are many editing errors in the book, I would tell people to just ignore them and enjoy being taken to other worlds in the fascinating story

SPOILER ALERT: These books rock! Okay, maybe that's not really a spoiler alert. I can't read these fast enough, there is so much going on but the author keeps it all straight. I haven't branched off into the side stories yet, because I am so invested into the main story line, but I will be reading them later.

Great space opera sci-fi. Many innovative technologies. Some characters are explored in-depth, some not so much. There is a ton of action, and sometimes I feel like I would have preferred less action and more philosophy, reflection on what's happening.

I finished this series over a month ago and I still find myself thinking about it from time to time. The world building in this universe is excellent, the characters fully developed, and a riveting story from beginning to end. Outsystem, the first book, took a few chapters to really get going, but once the story picked up and got moving, it didn't stop with the exception of some flashback chapters to fill in the story a little more. This is one of the few series I can highly recommend to any space sci-fi fan. I look forward to more entries in the series.

I really liked the first book. The second was OK, but rough in spots in it's handling of time. Disliked the non-ending of #3. Not sure I'll read #4.

It seems like the timescale exceeded the author's ability to tell the tale. For example, w/o a major spoiler... we spend sixty years living in a cabin by the lake. But at another time, we jump from a crisis to 0.9c w/o a explanation.

Tannis certainly used up more than her share of nine lives. It was an exiciting but long read. After reading 24,000 pages there wasn’t much of a conclusion. I suspose one would have to read “New Canan” to get all of the answers.

This is a good series of stories - the characters are likable and the story arc is fun. Some of the hard science fiction and military ideas are really well thought out. What keeps it from being great is a sort of short-cutting of the through-line. Even in the direst of military situations, there's never a true feeling of danger. If the worlds and ideas had been realized with one more solid layer of detail, if the story arcs had been given a little more room to grow, these would be fantastic. But like the editing, that last bit of care isn't there.

From OldRetiredMilitary: I read the first two books in this series as separate books -- thoroughly enjoyed both. Read the final books as part of this series of four. This is well-written hard, science fiction. When I say hard, I mean the author has taken the time to describe details of the world and technology in which the stories take place. This is also great space opera -- fast and furious action. Tannis, the female protagonist, is a strong woman leader and fighter and gets into many, many "interesting" situations. The series starts in a universe with no faster than light travel but with sentient AI personalities embedded within the brains of many folks, including Tannis. Other truly advanced technology abounds, including the ability to move very large masses: i.e. large asteroids, etc. If you like strong females, lots of action, and great technology descriptions, you will enjoy this book. I know I look forward to reading more tales about Tannis Richards and her friends as the saga continues.

I have a belief, when one resorts to profanity (among a few other things) it proves one is out of intelligent things to say. Now in context, I understand that there is a place for profanity in literature, but just throwing it in for no reason shows me a lack of vocabulary. Using the Lord's name in vain is worse and I am not at all religious. That said, this author broke both those constraints on the first page. As a result, I returned the book unread. If you have no such belief, I hope you find the book entertaining.

I was going to give this book one star because it is difficult to read due to the terrible dialog, flat characters, uneven pacing, poor editing, and just being really boring. However, I put an extra star on there because it may have been written for kids, so I am probably not the target audience.

Stupid. Childish. Boring. Luckily, it cost me nothing, borrowed under Prime Reading.
Also, author has some language issues:
-- Person A lends something to Person B. Author has Person B referring to A as "B's debtor". FYI, dear author, A is the "creditor", and B is the "debtor".
-- Throughout these books, the author describes revolving space structures (rings, cylinders) which produce a gravity-like force. The author repeatedly names the force "centripetal". FYI, dear author, true gravity is a centripetal force pulling everything towards center mass. The force you refer to is named "centrifugal", pushing away from the center.
===================
The author, in the attached comment presents his case for the correctness of using “centripetal”. He says “the [centripetal] force that pushes back against your feet *against* the centrifugal force is what simulates gravity”

I still maintain that he’s in error. The CENTRIFUGAL force is pushing my body outwards. Had I been standing on the rotating cylinder’s SURFACE, I’d simply be flying off into space. But I’m standing on the cylinder’s INTERIOR, and its outside wall (to me, subjectively, the “floor”) is in continuous collision with my feet. What simulates gravity is feeling the “weight” the centrifugal force effects against the unyielding “floor”.

Same for feeling normal gravity. The gravitational CENTRIPETAL force is pulling my body downwards. Had I just jumped off the Empire State Building, I’d simply be flying downwards towards the Earth’s center of mass. But I’m standing on the Earth’s surface (to me, subjectively, the “floor”), which is in continuous collision with my feet. What simulates gravity is feeling the “weight” the centripetal pull effects against the unyielding “floor”.

Please compare the wording of above two paragraphs.
We could thus apply the author’s words to the 2nd paragraph description of gravity, and allow him to argue that the reason we feel gravity as we stand on Earth’s surface is because of a centrifugal force that pushes *against* gravity.
Really???

(Kindle Unlimited) Enjoyable tales of the desperate attempts to complete the 'Intrepid' and set out on the journey to their new terraformed home before a rival company destroys them; the events on their way; their necessary decades long detour at Victoria. Tanis Richards continues to grow as a character in many ways.
After completing the reading of this collection, I immediately borrowed (Kindle Unlimited) all the available 'The Orion War' books to see how the future events unfolded and how the characters develop. What a ride it is.
I do agree with the comments of other readers that the number of errors occurring is a distraction. Surely that is from the pressure of putting out a large number of books in too short a time-frame e.g. I count twenty (20) projected for 2018 publication! .

Mr Cooper has a brilliant imagination, that does go anywhere the same as the characters jn his novels. Loved the series that I just completed. I would class him as the Tom Clancy of true science fiction. Or the next George Lucas. I am not a professional critic, just an avid reader, who against my second grade teachers advice ( she said you cannot read that ) did read Jules Verne' epic under sea novel. "Twenty Thousand Leagues Beneath The Sea" I'm 83 now and still an avid reader. Mr Cooper, keep up the wonderful work. Sincerely, EOC Dave Reeves USN Ret.

I am an avid reader and Space Opera is my oxycodone. I have read several epic sagas from the huge selection available on Prime. I have enjoyed them all, but by the time I got to volume 10 or so I was kind of looking for the end. Not so with the Aeon 14 Universe. I bought "The Intrepid Saga" as a box set. Before I had finished it, I got the (free) "Aeon 14 Reading Guide" and proceeded to purchase and read all of them in the recommended order. I have bought the more recent ones as they were released and have several on pre-order. I expect I will continue as long as Cooper is writing. He has also opened his universe up to selected other authors who have apparently worked very closely with Cooper to expand the Aeon 14 Universe. I have read all of them and have never been disappointed.

The series features action, that alone, would qualify it as very good "Military SF," but it goes way beyond that with carefully crafted characters. He develops his characters over long life spans and adds characters to provide a full and believable continuum of of human interaction. He also delves into a wide variety of political cultures that can only be investigated in an environment such as this. But don't worry. While It is never pedantic, it provide some sharp insights into current and possible future societies.

I have to tell you that this is not "David Brin or Gregory Benford Science Fiction," but like good space opera, the science is so well integrated into the story that you will not find yourself ruminating on how they could do that. The plots are tight and fast paced. I think you will have a had time putting them down.

In reference to some of the reviews that mentioned the quality of the editing and proofreading, He must have hired an editor, and I am sure he has legions of proofreaders. Apparently, he has re-released the earlier books because i found very few rough spots, and it has been one of my criticisms of other works I have encountered on Prime.

Once you start these, you will be looking at a long, but enjoyable commitment.

I loved the size of this book; being an avid reader, it's great to read such a big story. The story has a number of different characters with their own story lines, that do wind themselves into the main track, often across long gaps, and I really enjoyed this - wondering when characters would re-appear. A great read overall.

I've been completely engrossed in this universe for the past year now, and it's certainly been a wild ride. I've read through thousands of pages and tens of thousands of words throughout this epic sci-fi adventure, and all of the incredible people M.D. Cooper and his co-authors have created, seeing them grow as people, AI, ascended, human and mech, over the hundreds and sometimes thousands of years that some of them have been alive throughout this these stories, and the universal peace that some of them strive for and the hardships that they endure to achieve it, well, it makes me feel small and insignificant in comparison, kind of like how one feels when weighed against the universe as a whole. That feeling of being a mere blip in the cosmic sense of time.

These hero's embody that impossible goal of standing like gods among mortals in regards to their achievements. They're human, albeit with some major technological advantages. But they wake every morning just like everyone else to go to work, need their coffee and the company of friends, and are just as bewitched by their emotions like love and hate as anyone else might be. AI's included. They're at the whim of the same core human conditions that we are─they just employ a sense of duty and determination to bring the galaxy and beyond to a point of, if not tolerance, then at least coexistence.

I've grown to respect and love so many of these characters. They're like real people to me, as I'm sure they are to the authors pouring their lives into them. Aeon 14 and the people that make it what it is, well, I've grown as a person right along with them. I know it sounds silly─no one reads science fiction space opera's for self improvement, but I've become determined to better myself, and be a better person, and reading these novels has been part of that inspiration.

If you get started on this journey, and let me tell you, it /is/ a journey, like some abyss that will swallow you whole once you dive in, you'll never turn back. It's such an impressive universe they've created here, both in how massive an undertaking just reading this is and in its brilliance.

Let me be clear, once you've finished "The Complete Intrepid Saga" you're only just getting started.
