My children and I read this book together as a family and loved it. The plot line is full of suspense and kept us turning pages. My children went on to read this series on their own. I had to buy one copy of each to avoid fighting. :)

This is a wonderful story. I'm 30 and love a good children's book, and I devoured this one in three days. From an adult perspective, the plot has enough hints that you can kind of tell what's happening, but it still leaves you guessing, almost until the very end, and I like that - you get all these hints, and tastes of what's to come, which is nice. The writing is imaginative, clear, and fast paced. There were a few passages where it dragged a bit, but not much, and nothing that skipping a few paragraphs here and there couldn't take care of. Maybe for young readers those paragraphs are important, so I don't begrudge them.
Congratulations on a great debut!

I know this is supposed to be a kid's book series, but I'm 36 and LOVE these books! I find myself not able to put them down! The characters are likeable, the villian is bad enough to be bad but not terrifying (as not to scare the kids TOO much) and the atmosphere is fun. The bold printed "Magical happenings" aren't lost on me, and I actually like it. In some cases, it's needed so you KNOW it's magical and not a mundane act. These books are light and fun, but deep enough in action to keep you trapped!

While the writing was simple, the plot details and characters were enough to keep me engaged. It may seem lengthy for a children's book, but it's a great read. There are a lot of twists and mysteries to try to solve. Will I be reading the rest of the series? Definitely. Would I recommend this book to others? For sure.

"Septimus Heap, Book One, Magyk" by Angie Sage is possibly one of the best children books to have come out this year. With a colorful cast of fully drawn characters, creative plots, and pure imagination and control over her world, Sage takes her first plunge into the world of childrens' novels and succeeds wonderfully. It's not the magic that makes Magyk such a great novel, it's the characters. Readers will race along with the thoughts, emotions, and experiences of the quirky main characters of Jenna (a girl who just might be Queen), Boy 412 (a mysterious child from the young Army), Marcia (The very fashionable ExtraOrdinary Wizard), and Nicko (Jenna's brother and sailor). There are so many other enjoyable characters that mentioning them all would just take too long. My particular favorites are Boggart, Boy 412, and Marcia. The style of Angie Sage is truly enjoyable and endurable for all ages. Her style really reminds me of another up-and-coming talent Anna Dale, who wrote the truly amazing story 'Whispering to Witches'. If you enjoyed 'Magyk', you'll enjoy that book as well. Anyways, will these characters ever stop the menacing necromancer DomDaniel from taking over the land? And who is Septimus Heap (the mysterious title character who seems will never appear)? Read this amazing novel to find out. You will not be disappointed.

Seriously, everybody compares everything to Harry Potter these days, and nothing comes close. Except maybe now. I haven't felt this much excitement while reading a book since I read Harry Potter for the first time. The author really gets inside the heads of all the characters and lets you know what they're thinking, which is especially funny when it's an animal, like Bert...who is a duck...but really a cat. Need I say more? Go buy your own copy!
Also recommended: Harry Potter (naturally), The Nobodies, Chasing Vermeer, The Golden Hour, Dark Hills Divide, Molly Moon, Artemis Fowl, and anything by Meg Cabot.

Sage's Magyk guides the reader through an intriguing storyline full of magic, peril and conflict; however there is little that truly separates the book from others.
The story begins as Silas Heap returns to his wife and children after finding a baby girl outside. After being told by the Extraordinary Wizard to raise the child as his own, keeping her origin a secret, he rushes home eager to tell the family. However, to his dismay, he discovers that his youngest son, Septimus Heap, has been killed. After a few years, the Heaps seem to have a normal life, and the young girl, Jenna, seems to be fitting in well. However, after the Extraordinary Wizard reveals to the family an unexpected secret, life seems to become a battle for survival. As the story progresses, friends are made, battles are fought, lives are taken, and secrets are revealed.
The story starts off well, with a captivating plot and interesting characters it's difficult to put the book down. Jenna seems like an adventurous girl, and seems very mature for her age - the kind of character that you would hate to see die. Marcia Overstrand, the Extraordinary Wizard is the type that you wouldn't want to annoy, with both her short temper and powerful magical abilities. Although she's rough on the outside, her caring side shimmers through sometimes. Simon Heap, the oldest son, is the classic reliable big brother, and appears to be Jenna's closest sibling. Aunt Zelda's caring, protective and matter-of-fact nature is one of the more interesting characters. Although the book contains a myriad of characters, I couldn't really feel a sense of realism in the other characters. Yes, they were believable, but nothing makes them really stand out. Besides the above characters, I feel the other characters are too generic, making it difficult for the reader to really connect to them.
Villians? This is something that bothered me after I looked back on it. Most of my favorite stories have villains that think outside the box, breaking the normal boundaries and going into a realm of evil and enhancing that with their own devious minds. Magyk, although there are villains, they do not seem more than just a little kid's villain that is exceptionally strong and just uses pure strength to win fights. No, the villains aren't noticeably bad (the Hunter for instance is well expressed), however DomDaniel, the main villain, lacks the feeling of impending doom and fear that most villains should generate. In a nutshell, villains are evil, but are they exceptionally evil? Not really.
Finally the story doesn't provide you with anything that's specifically unique to Magyk. Albeit this is difficult to do in the modern world where almost every storyline is taken and nothing is unique anymore, I feel Magyk could have been more unique with its story. I suppose one could argue that the Brownies were unique, but everything seemed too sugar coated to be evil in this story. The concept is good, and this is only the first book of the series, but a long lost child, an evil mage regaining power, and a princess in hiding all seem too cliché any story.
Despite all these complaints, the story is actually quite enjoyable. A reason for the harsh critique could be because Harry Potter has dominated the magical story realm, and anything must seem to match up to it. Magyk, as interesting as it is, does not surprise the reader with anything new and thus, one could not expect it to grow as popular as the Harry Potter series. Perhaps my expectations were too high, and therefore I try to bring the worst out of the story, however Magyk is easily a book that I would recommend to the bored. The characters are enchanting, the tale is enticing, and there are scenes where you'll just turn page after page until you realize all the characters are safe.
A definite read for those that enjoy more innocent tales, however don't expect a world famous Harry Potter type story.

I first read Magyk in 2007 when I saw it in my school library. I immediately borrowed it and read it in a week (note that I was 9). after I finished itI nagged my parents about getting me the next in line. That was how it started and I now have all the Septimus Heap books. They are well structured and full of witty humour. I got the first and second in a set and liked how the Magykal words were in a different font to the rest. I was dissapointed when I got the third, fourth and fifth as they were all by Bloomsbury and all they did with these words was make them capatalised at the first letter of the words. I have already managed to get two of my friends into these books and would recomend them to anybody who likes fantasy. It starts off when Septimus Heap dies as a baby and is taken away, meanwhile Silas Heap finds a baby girl near the forest and adopts her. 10 years later an assassin is after the girl, who is named Jenna, and so Marcia Overstrand takes the Heap's and Boy 412 to safety in the Marram Marshes. After a long journey and too many boiled cabbage sandwiches Boy 412 is found to be Septimus Heap and all is well. If you are not sure then read the first book and if you love them, which is very easy, then get the rest as I did.

Right now, it is every publisher's dream to discover 'the next Harry Potter' and HarperCollins is no exception. However, they've fallen just short of the bar with their claims about Angie Sage's 'Magyk.' While the story and plot are very original it is far too long for a first children's novel and it doesn't quite succeed its marketing boasts.
The story of a famed, powerful 'seventh son of a seventh son' gets the story off to a good start. But shortly after, it falters. For Septimus dies, and the focus shifts instead to Jenna, who quickly-- almost too quickly, I think-- discovers that she's the princess of the murdered queen. As the plot follows Jenna, her adopted brother and father, and several other quirky and wonderful characters, on their adventures, the plot mostly meanders. It has its high points certainly, but far too much time is spent running about, or later, stuck in one place.
While Jenna appears to be a main character, I didn't feel like she was fully developed. She never completely questioned her past, she just accepted it. Orphans in most books want to know about their parents, and she didn't do a whole lot of discovering.
Also, the importance of Septimus is never fully explained. Why is being the 'seventh son of a seventh son' so important in this world? Why/How did DomDaniel become evil and what was his true role? What is the history of this world? Why was there a Supreme Custodian and what exactly was his role? (Other than being a pompous fool.) Why are there only queens? How did the wizards come to such prominence? Why are they less revered now? These mysteries are hinted at, but never fully explored, which I felt took away from the story. My hope is that Angie Sage develops her world a bit more in the second and third books and answers some of these questions, since I feel they are important. I see a lot of promise here, but not enough to call the world 'complete.'
One of the many things that makes the Harry Potter books so enjoyable is J.K. Rowling's fantastic world. The reader feels that he or she is the hands of an author who knows her creation and thus the world becomes real. Sage leaves much unexplained, her plot slows dramatically in the middle, and her villian is never fully realized. (He's mostly just swagger, snearing, and yelling, and his purpose is never truly explained.) This series will be popular, that's certain, but I don't think it will be 'the next Harry Potter.' However, it definitely has potential and I will be looking forward to the next volume.

Written for older elementary and younger middle school students, Magyk is a nice flowing, predictable story.
When Septimus Heap is carried away and proclaimed dead, a baby girl, Jenna, is found and raised by the Heaps, a family of Ordinary wizards. The story starts off with Jenna on her 10th birthday with a visit from Marcia Overstrand, the powerful, commanding, and a little vain ExtraOrdinary Wizard. Marcia reveals to Jenna that she is the princess of the murdered queen, and that they are in danger. Jenna, Marcia, her brother Nicko, and her father Silas set off to the marsh cottage of Aunt Zelda Heap to hide from the Assassin sent to kill Jenna. In leaving the castle, they encounter 'boy 412', a mysterious boy who doesn't speak until just before the climax, but still plays one of the biggest roles in the story. Jenna, boy 412, Nicko, Silas, and Aunt Zelda play the main characters in the story and take on DomDaniel, who will do anything in his power to kill the princess and become the ruling ExtraOrdinary Wizard.
The book has light humor, descriptive magykal creatures, a nice plot, clear details, and is very easy to follow. The only thing that dissatisfied me was the lack of insight into the characters thoughts and feelings, they were expressed only through their actions. Over all, a satisfingly predictable story.

I bought this book hoping for something funny and magical as it said from the back, and from the quotes from Clive Barker. What I did find was a book that is about 550 pages that seems like it is longer than War and Peace. I really saw no humor or humour as the author is british, and the magyk part of it was quite poor. Interesting ideas definately and I will purchase the second book as the story IS quite interesting, but the author should learn mroe from C. S. Lewis than from his friend J.R.R. Tolkein and cut out a lot of the words and scenary shots.
I want a book this long to be engaging and with lots of Magic and action, but when the battle between the enemey DomDaniel(what it that name?) and the heroes seems to only last 20-30 pages out of 500+ thats a bit obsurd.
Actually the final battle is about 3-5 pages long, the master Necromancer is mentioned in 20-30 pages of the book. The Hunter chasing them has more detail and is more of a villian the the actual villian. All I ask is show how evil the evil actually is, and shorten up the telling a bit, and this could have been an amazing novel, the story is at least passable to fantasy writing, and it is written very well, but has WAY to much filler and not a lot of meat to it.

Even though this book was touted for the 9 to 12 year old crowd -- it is not. Too many deaths and murders and wild creatures that eat people - a lot of scary magic. But older than that --- and I am an adult --- I say...READ ON. This is an excellent book for older "kids" and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not quite up to par with HP but nearly there and the descriptions at the end are amazing. I will read the entire series and you should too. This would make a wonderful movie and certainly much better than Nannie McPhee!

"Magyk" is a novel that I thoroughly enjoyed. It has all of the mystery, action, and even humor that most people would want in a book. Lots of books can make you see the scene in your head, but few can transport you to that exact spot like Angie Sage did in this story. With each sentence I read, I could see myself standing at that place and watching the characters speak and act. I would give this book title to any boy or girl in their teens for them to read. "Magyk" is, truly, a magykal book.

I am an adult Harry Potter fan. Read all 6 books multiple times, own all the movies, etc. So the wizarding world is definitely up there as far as interest goes in reading materials. When I saw Magyk and Flyte in the bookstore, I had to get them. They are good. Easy to follow, engaging story, slightly predictable. Whereas I feel Harry Potter appeal to much older children and adults, I definitely feel this series is for the younger set. There are some similarities -- boggarts, a character named Trelawney, good vs. evil, the central character being the same age, and a few others fans can easily spot. It isn't hard for the adult reader to figure out how it's going to end, where you do not get that with Harry Potter. Whereas Harry Potter could be called "high school" and beyond, the Septimus series would be "middle school". Just read them for what they are and don't expect it to be like Harry Potter and you'll enjoy them. It's definitely something I think kids will related to -- easier to understand for children. But not something you are going to have to read multiple times to get.

Magyk is the first installment in the Septimus Heap series. It is a wonderful book filled with magic and adventure around every turn. The book is about how Jenna Heap learns she is the deceased queen's only heir, and that the daryk wizard DomDaniel is after her. He is after her becuase she is the only thing in his way to becoming king. I think that any child who likes fantasy and adventure would love this story, but especially 10-11 year olds will find the hidden clues to the next volume in the story fun. Also try the second book in this series, Flyte

This book has a very whimsical feel to it. While many other people have been comparing it to the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, I think that this book falls into a completely different category. The characters were very well thought-out and have unique personalities, and the plot is creative and can hold it's own against other competing fantasy books. I especially liked how the author added lots of side-stories throughout the book, telling all of the character's individual adventures.
However, the main villain, DomDaniel, was very disapointing. When first mentioned in the story, he sounded like a very fearsome enemy. But as soon as he himself entered the plot, he didn't strike me as someone to be scared of. He was actually a little silly, to be honest. I thought that the only dangerous enemy in the book was DomDaniel's henchman, The Hunter. If he and DomDaniel had switched places in terms of power, the main characters might have had a real threat. Also, *spoiler alert* it isn't too hard to figure out the big "shocker" near the end of the book. It IS the name of the series, after all.

While the writing and the plot for this book were wonderful I was a little dissapointed that it was so predictable. Within about th first four chapters I knew most of what was going to happen in the rest of the book. I got the feeling that the book shouldn't be in the young adult section of my library because it felt as though I were being spoken to as a young child. Some parts of the book were very creative and imaginative while others were so predictable that I wanted to scream. From reading the inside cover of the book I could pretty much guess what the big mystery the book was based on was which made all of the charectors being to dumb to see it all the more frustrating. It was like watching the movie "You've Got Mail" all over again when you knew through the whole thing that which the main charectors were so desperatly trying to find out. All in all I think that this book was a little under my age level and I definatly wouldn't recomend it to anyone over the age of 10 or 11 or they will be severally dissapointed. But, as I said I did love the writting and the plot was fairly original.

Magyk is the first installment in the Septimus Heap series. The book follows in familar fantasy footsteps with magic and wizards and the like. The author adds touches of humor to keep the story fresh. The key drawbacks to the story are the spare writing style and the numerous plot holes. Also, there's too much build up surrounding the identity of Boy 412. It's not a surprise when his identity is revealed, even though this revelation is used as the climax of the story. Based on this book alone, I wouldn't recommend this series. HOWEVER, having read the other two installments, which are much better, this mediocre start can be forgiven.

However, the main villain, DomDaniel, was very disapointing. When first mentioned in the story, he sounded like a very fearsome enemy. But as soon as he himself entered the plot, he didn't strike me as someone to be scared of. He was actually a little silly, to be honest.

First, let me start off by saying that I am of the Harry Potter generation. I was seven when the first book came out, still cutting my teeth in the literary world. I was hooked, and after I had matured into the reader I am thirteen years later, with more refined tastes, I found myself hungry for more.
I received Magyk, the first book in the Septimus Heap series, as a birthday gift from a friend of the family who knew my tastes. I devoured it within hours, curious. My mind wrapped around the facts and theories Angie Sage provided me like a boa around its prey.
I can honestly say that I saw no fault in Magyk. While some things I expected to happen, did happen, I found it more comforting than bothersome. I felt like the characters were trusted friends, people who I could relate to and who were real. Just like Harry Potter.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, Harry Potter fan or not.

This book is the story of the heap family. Septimus Heap is the seventh son of a seventh son. When he dies at birth Sarah and Silas Heap are devastated. However they make up for the loss with jenna - a mysterious baby who is assigned to their care by "drumroll please" Marcia Overstrand who is Miss purple snakey boots. Ten years later Marcia appears and tells everyone that jenna is the Queen(ling)everyone is looking for.The first part of the story is the not-very-desperate flight of a family, an extraordinary wizard and a confused and scared little boy. They all go into hiding in the White Witch's house who is also a sister of silas heap.the hilarious and not so hilarious escapades of these people-mainly jenna, marcia, boy 412,aunt zelda and nicko make up the rest of the story.simon Heap's love story, the dragon boat of Hotep Ra, the apprenticeship of boy 412,a grumpy boggart ,Aunt Zelda's cooking, an apprentice supper and the unveiling of the mysterious character "Septimus Heap" are things you may want to watch out for!!!!!Angie sage has some lovely interesting and funny characters in this book.I love Marcia Overstrand and Zelda Zanuba Heap. The purple snakey boots idea is so cool! The problem with book is that defeating domdaniel was too easy . the book does not have any threat or danger at all. angie sage needs a much much more evil villain. The villain seems less like a villain and more like a buffoon introduced for comic releif.Another thing, the boy 412-septimus heap connection was faaaaaaaaaar too obvious!Ilove the message ratthough!

After several picture books, Angie Sage makes a splash with her first novel. "Septimus Heap Book One: Magyk" treads familiar territory for fantasy fans, but it has enough humor and interesting magic to keep the story moving at a steady clip. As first-of-a-series books go, this is a keeper.
Ten years ago, Septimus Heap died in infancy. And on the same day, his father Silas Heap found a baby girl, and was instructed by the new ExtraOrdinary Wizard Marcia to raise her as his own. Ten years later, Marcia reveals that the girl Jenna is actually the future queen of that land. But she's in danger, and now a spy has found out where the girl lives.
Marcia tries to spirit Jenna to safety, but now nowhere is safe -- an Assassin, a Hunter, and the apprentice to an evil wizard are sent after them. Now Marcia, Silas, Jenna, the ghost of the wizard Althus, and a mysterious young boy are on the run. But not everyone is as they seem, and a boy claiming to be Septimus Heap may not be him at all...
The first few chapters of "Magyk" aren't too promising, since Sage's writing seems to be stuck in "picture book" mode. But when she gets to the present-day antics of the Heap family, she has settled comfortably into the writing groove. (Comfortable enough to even drop a blink-and-you'll-miss-it homage to J.R.R. Tolkien)
Sage's writing is solid enough, with enough details to keep the spare narrative from seeming colorless. Lots of goofy clothes, offhand humor, splashy magic and interesting characters are sprinkled throughout the book. Sage's style reminds one of Diana Wynne-Jones' early work, and her interesting magical (magykal?) systems and wizardly hierarchy seem to back that up.
Who's the main character? Hard to tell, since much of the action focuses on lost princess Jenna, but the focus shifts gradually to Boy 412 (as he is called until the last pages). Marcia is probably the most interesting character there -- dignified, a little haughty, very powerful, and sometimes overly concerned about how her clothes look.
"Septimus Heap Book One: Magyk" is a promising start for a new series, but is a good book when read on its own. Entertaining and a good novel debut for Angie Sage.

It is a good book for readers of fantasy, but as one person has put it, the font type changes whenever magic is mentioned. It is a distraction more than anything else. The book has a lot of characters, and focus on them is anything but. The author doesn't seem to really let you get to know any one of the characters. Actually, it seems the book has too many characters that it becomes dizzying.

I have read this book and it is amazing. If I had to give age for kids to read this it would be about from 10-13. (As a 10 year old myself) It is about girl who has six brothers and on her tenth birthday she figures out she is actually a princess. Meanwhile a boy in the young army is protecting the wizard tower and is saved and finds out that he has magycal powers. Together, they destroy DomDaniel, an evil wizard. I really love this book and I hope you will too! :):):)

These books are not only fun and challenging for young readers, but they are amazing for any fan of the genre. I have been a reader of fantasy and adventure books all my life - I was listening to The Hobbit on audio tape at three years old. As a grown up Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fan I remember the sadness I felt at the end of those series, however I discovered these books and am enchanted all over again. I have read the first 4 books in the series so far and Angie Sage is an intelligent, dramatic and hilarious writer. She has an acute love for her characters and an eye for the obscure. Contrary to what another review said, I feel her books are incredibly original in ever important sense of the word.
In short I loved it and your kids will love it if they are readers who enjoy chapter adventure books.

I am 33, and enjoyed this book immensely. Knowing that Rowling only has one more Harry Potter book to go before the series ends, I'm glad to have a new series to begin counting on.
Although the plot was easy to figure out,(as in who Septimus actually was)and there were a lot of similarities to Harry Potter (Boggart being one) it was fun to read. I appreciate the humor Sage put in the book, and am looking forward to the next one in the series.

Magyk is set in a fictional place and at a time we would recognize as the late medieval period. Most of the action takes place in the castle and the Marram Marshes. The story centers around the Heap family. A foundling is substituted for a still born within the Heap family. The true identity of the foundling sets the action as the protagonists, a small group wanting to control the castle, attempt to kill her. What fallows are the adventures of the Heaps as they flee the castle and head for the Marram Marshes. Unexpected revelations add to the excitement.
There are a multitude of supporting characters, some human some animal or magical. The dialog is realistic and aids character development. As in all good stories the reader becomes involved in the welfare of the characters and is eager to read more to discover what happens.
Magic is of course the main draw here but wits, friendships, loyalties, and luck play there part. The action flows very naturally and builds to the very end. The bad characters are tempered by the use of humor which makes them more realistic and also takes the edge off the protagonists' deeds. A fun read for young and old (who can still grasp the whimsical).

On a high-fantasy Earth, Septimus Heap is born. That very night, Septimus's dad Silas finds a baby girl abandoned in the snow. Silas returns with her only to find his new born son pronounced dead and taken away by the midwife. The Heaps then decide to name the girl Jenna and raise her themselves. Now, when she's ten years old, they find out Jenna is the daughter of the assassinated queen and that an assassin sent by a guy called DomDaniel is on the way to kill her. To avoid an irksome fate, the family sets out for Zelda Heap's cottage.
This is for sure aimed at younger kids, and I don't think the target audience will even like it. Really, I can't begin to describe how annoying Zelda, Nicko, and Jenna Heap are. Zelda is an elderly woman who doesn't like it when people use magyk to "interfere with the elements", and she likes to bring in unnecessary disagreements over ridiculous things. Nicko and Jenna are whiny and helpless. I doubt the nine to twelve-year-old kids reading the book will like them. All of the other Heaps excluding bumbling Silas have very little to do.
Marcia Overstrand (the "ExtraOrdinary wizard") was my favorite character. She has an authoritative and important personality about her, and yet she's still nice and funny. And she dislikes Zelda. Maybe she doesn't want to show it too much, but it's obvious. Alther Mella was a ghost, and he has some sort of involvement with the queen. There was a Young Army kid called Boy 412 who was vaguely interesting, but that's largely due to him being more or less mute. There's a Boggart named Boggart (these aren't your usual shape-shifters) who was horrendously funny ("Now, you followin'?"). DomDaniel (why is it written without a space?) doesn't prove to be very threatening in any way, and he's just evil because he feels like being evil. Yeah, it's a kids' book, but I think they deserve a better baddy. The Apprentice of DomDaniel was much better, we get to see a lot of his perspective. He's a guy who didn't exactly choose to be a criminal, but doesn't really want to stop being one either.
This story jumps around from a lot of different perspectives, so much that it's hard to come by character development. Really, do we need to be focusing on messenger rats? Just Marcia, Alther, 412, and the Apprentice would have been fine. Important things that could have been dealt with quicker take way too long. Some scenes are useless and boring, they can pretty much be skipped without missing anything.
I think the fictional world is fair, but it's not that good. I have a younger brother, I know kids like imaginative worlds. But author Angie Sage gave her world things like "the Forest", "the Castle", "the River", etc. Kids can remember location names, they don't need this sort of simplification. There are some odd/unnecessary elements, such the incomprehensible "charms", and all wizards' eyes turn green at a certain age. The "evil" magyk is "Darke" magyk, so nothing ground-breaking there. I did like the character Petroc Trelawney (gotta love living pet pebbles).
For some reasons, the word "Magyk" and all the Magykal spells are bolded in the book. It's distracting, messy looking, and it wore on my eyes. I mean really, in a fantasy world, the word "magyk" has to be used a lot, then there are all the different spells people are saying, so there are bolded words everywhere. I'm not sure if it's supposed to have some kind of meaningful and emphasizing effect, but whatever it's supposed to be, it doesn't do Magyk any good.
Nearing the end, it at first looked like it was going in a very interesting direction. But the moment an alternative was hinted at, it was obvious what was going to happen. So then you have to sit through a lengthy section for a big reveal to happen, and whaddaya know, you already guessed it.
There's little incentive for anyone to read Septimus Heap: Magyk. The target audience isn't going to like any of the characters they're supposed to relate to, and the world the book takes place in isn't going to be very interesting to them. The story is really boring and long, too. I can't think of any kid actually finishing this and liking it.

The author of Magyk is Angie Sage. Some of the events that happen in the beginning are a little girl named Jenna is lying in in the snow when she is a baby. On the same day, Septimus Heap disappeared. The beginning of the story starts in the Rambals. My favorite part is when they find out who boy412 really is. And if you like magic and wizardry and suprises, this is the book for you. I loved the the book.

This is one fantabulous book! I couldn't put it down, it was like reading Harry Potter book 1 all over again! This is a series that I'm going to be waiting on pins and needles for! Each character had such depth and detail that they seemed like they were standing next to you! The settings for each part of the story were described in fine detail and it was as if you'd been there! I just can't wait for book two!

This is one book that I will definately reccomend to all my friends. I look for good books that belong to a series at all times. But this is one I will always treasure.
It's mostly about a baby girl who is found in the snow one winter. You follow her in all her terrifing adventures, let the world of magic flow into your hands. This book has many magical creatures that fill the world with uncearanty and suspense. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have.

I hated this book it was so detailed and parts of it made absolutely no sense. It was also overly detailed and with every turn of the page it seemed stupider and stupider, who like wizards and warlocks? The only book in this series I liked was The Magykle Papers it was good. I'm sorry for those of you who loved this book. Sorry >:(

I really enjoyed reading Magyk because it was really different and interesting. It kept you guessing who Septimus is, what happened to him. It is a really thick book but when I read it, it didn't feel as though it was that long so if you are thinking about reading it don't be put off by its size. It is a really good book and it's worth reading.

Another book I'd reccomend is The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. A fun book too that most people interested in fantasy adventure will be sure to enjoy.

When one problem is solved then anoter is created. I personaly didn't like Harry Potter but this is kind of like that only better. There is a charaicter for everyone to relate to in Magyk. I am reading Flyte right now which is the second book. Angie Sage is the best author every, I think.

This is another book that I read aloud to my daughter but would not have finished otherwise. I am mystified by the plethora of good reviews for this one. The story is tired and scattershot; the so-called main character is largely missing; it's far longer than it needs to be; all the magic is of the deus ex machina variety; the writing style is by turns condescending, obtrusive, and dull; and the plot is hard to discern. Even with all that said, I've read (or attempted to read) others that were worse. My best indicator of how well it was received by my daughter is if she asks to immediately get to the next one in the series or not. She did not ask about this one (and if she did, there's no way I would've read it). This book held no surprises, moved at a snail's pace, and contained only cardboard characters. Next up will be a book of my choosing.

This book is an excellent start to a series which I hope will continue with the remaining books in the series. The characters are well defined and the other elements of the book make for an enjoyable story for adults, as well as for young adults. It is a longer book than I expected for the first in a series, but the story will keep you mesmerized from beginning to end. Which, of course, is really just the beginning...

I am a mother of five and a teacher. I love fantasy and young adult novels. This series has become one of my favorites. It is completely clean; no bad language, no inappropriate scenes or images. The story is a bit predictable but highly entertaining in spite of that. The strongest aspect of the book is the writing itself. The author is very clever and the conversational tone of the book makes it humorous and entertaining. There are so many parts that are a little off topic but they are the best parts as they create the mood of the book. I loved it.

So often I am disappointed when a book is marketed to Harry Potter fans. Rowling is certainly a hard act to follow, but Angie Sage manages the impossible. This book is captivating and charming from the start. Yes, the cast of characters is a bit large, and the bold font used for "magycal" events can be a bit irksome to older readers. But, I think that this just helps to jump start to imaginations of younger readers (ages 8-10) who are the main audience for this new series. This series has adventure enough for the youngsters and humor enough to keep an adult interested. I will be following future releases in this series closely. Hats off to Sage!

I came across this book because of a girl going into the fourth grade over the previous summer. I was aimlessly wandering Barnes and Noble children's section trying to decide what a good addition to my personal library for my future classroom would be when I asked her what her and her classmates were reading. It took me awhile to get into the book as I was expecting something very much like Harry Potter (which it is in some respects but also vastly different). Upon completeing this book I have finished the second and third book within 3 days. I am hooked and once I read the fourth, I am afraid Ms. Sage won't be able to write the Septimus Heap books fast enough to keep up with me. If you have not yet picked this book up, you need to! I loved each one and cannot wait to keep reading to see what happens!

This book was a great read. Angie Sage has truly made her mark in the children's publishing industry. Her characters are very well developed and at the end of the book she lets you know what happens to everyone.
A couple of thing about the book is the antagonist (evil person) isn't evil enough. Another one of her characters was supposed to be mean, but in the end turned out to be a nice person.
But, other than that, this book is fantastic and it is even more enjoyable when you purchase the CD read along. I purchased 10 CDs for $3.99 on ebay. You will NOT regret purchasing this book. It is worth every 5 stars.
Also, to future reviewers, please don't give away the parts of the book. Let people read it for themselves. This is a review site not a book report. You either win or you lose when purchasing a book. Read the book and see for yourself. You can always resell it if you don't like it. Another thing, can't you all post a review without bringing up another book. Stick with reviewing the book you read and nothing else. Thank you.

I am in fantasy reading overload. It seems every publisher wants to have a book with boy wizards who have a greater destiny. Been there, done that. Writers should move on. And so should their editors. This book, however is a bit more original. The spells in bold face are annoying, but the story is good. It kept me engaged, and isn't that what a book is for?

The first book of this series is a down to earth book of wizards and wizardry. It deals with family and ancient legends-deals with magyk and those of the dark side that have taken power - It is a charming story of the Heap family and its kith and kin, and is an imaginative smooth read. It has charmed me into anticipating the 2nd book of this series. A beautifully written book that captures your heart.

I enjoied this book because of the interesting charchters and story. It has alot of twists and turns and it makes you think and guess. Although by the time you reach the middle alot of things become predictable. Not that I am going to give away anything. In the end it was a creative story that was well writen but needed more details.

As my son grows older (he's 11) and obviously no longer needs me to read to him..we read the same book and talk about what we each think us going to happen..or why something happened. We both really enjoyed this book a combo of fantasy, mystery, gothic...and are looking forward to reading the next one in the series. This type of book keeps kids interested in reading (adults too),

I loved this! The content was amazing, the idea of it was... Incredible! I really, really liked this book! I liked how the author spelt alot of the words diffrently than usaul. One of the most Magykal books I have ever read. Don't think it will be even CLOSE to Harry Potter! It is so far off! Good book! I enjoyed it very much!

The story of Septimus Heap is powerhouse fantasy. You've got a boy wizard (who doesn't know he's a wizard!) raised very cruelly away from his true family. You've got a princess raised by paupers--both with hearts of gold. You've got a dark wizard coming back to power whom many believed to be dead. You've got a magic ring. You've got dragons. You've got talking rats. You've got a saucy barmaid and at least one castle. And you have a satisfyingly intricate back story with plenty of action. All good.
What Septimus Heap is missing is character development, which makes it difficult to get very invested in the series.

I would have to say that this book is a rather good read and ideal for killing alot of dull hours during the summer. The book is a little flat and cheesy at first, but the story picks up eventually. There are also a lot of obvious ties and simularities to the Harry Potter books. First of all, when someone becomes a full-fledged wizard, they get piercing green eyes. What other famous book character has piercing green eyes, huh? Then there is the fact that it is about a family of wizards, the Heaps, who have seven children and they all have blond curly hair, which sounds very familiar. Just like the Weasleys from Harry Potter, except the Weasley's have flaming red hair. There are even twins, Edd and Erik whom you could relate to Fred and George. There is also an extremely ambicious older brother, Simon, who would betray his family after being offered power(remind anyone of Percy Weasley?).
So anyway, the book starts out with the birth of their seventh son, Septimus. But he "dies" shortly after being born. He is actually stolen by the mid-wife to become the apprentice of a Darke wizard. If he actually makes it to apprenticeship, I will not tell you and spoil the book because it has so many thrilling twists and turns.
After Septimus' "death", enter the mysterious dark-haired little girl with a strange and famous past. The first thing that I thought when I read this was, "Harry Potter!" Except Jenna, the little girl, has a much better childhood. Now poor Septimus has a Harry Potter-like childhood, but I won't go on about that, lest I spoil the book.
On her tenth birthday, Jenna finds out from the Extra-Ordinary Wizard, Marcia Overstrand that she is the princess and that her life is in danger. Jenna goes with Marcia for protection and the other Heaps go into hiding. All the Heaps except for Silas, the father and Nicko, the youngest boy. They come to visit Jenna to deliver her birthday present and they all end up going into hiding together. Also, they end up taking a boy that they rescued from the Young Army who was known as boy 412.
So they go to stay with Silas' aunt Zelda, the White Witch. All the while they are being chased after the Hunter and the Apprentice of DomDaniel(the darke wizard/Necromancer). They reach Zelda's with the help of the ghost of Alther Mella, the former Extra Ordinary Wizard (who reminded me a little of Dumbledore) and a boggart which is totally not the same as the boggart in the HP books.
They spend months at Zelda's house while DomDaniel slowly took over. Boy 412 warms up to them all and turns out to have amazing magykal powers and Marcia offers to make him her apprentice. He also finds a Magykal ring that will help him out in the end. Eventually DomDaniel finds them and there is a great battle where they have to rescue Marcia from his clutches.
But who is Septimus Heap, is he Boy 412's real identity or is he DomDaniel's Apprentice? You'll have to read the book to find out.

Here is another children's book that I just could not get into at all. I read the first 75 pages, and even those were tough to get through. As a true Harry Potter fan, I found this book to be seriously missing the mark in the fantasy-magic genre. The characters were not well-written, and for me, when the characters aren't fully developed, I have a very hard time caring at all about any of them. The storyline just bored me to pieces, and a few elements seemed a little too familiar if you are an HP fan (i.e. a spiral staircase that winds its way up a tower, a character with the last name "Trelawney"). I think kids (probably ages 8 to 11) might enjoy this book if they already like the wizard/magic fantasy genre. But this book just did not do it for me.

I thought this would be a good read becase I read her picture books to my little neghibor. I picked tis up at Borders, read the back and it sounded good. But it wasn't! At first I thought that usally long books are better, but this was not! I know this author could write better books, that aren't picture books. In some of the chapters nothing happens that goes with the story's plot. I'm very disaponted in this book, TIS TIS TIS!

Angie Sage's work is certainly inventive, humorous, and populated with a host of diverse and interesting characters. Yet the series hasn't quite yet lived up to its potential. Being only the first book of three, Sage has to establish and describe the rich world that she had undoubtedly created in her imagination. But in doing so, she neglects the characters. None of the characters in her story, separated from their backgrounds, are interesting in it of themselves. Some of them are outright archetypes of the genre. This makes a few of their interactions a little boring. The one big 'surprise' that she plans is also fairly predictable. However, for those who are willing to forgive the mundane characters, the world they inhabit is quite Magycal.

Like many Potter fans, I was looking for something to fill the void. I have found it!!! I am on book 2 in the series and can say that Sage keeps the action coming, the fantasy alive, and the characters believable. I can't bear the thought of finishing this series-what will i do then???!!!

"Magyk" is the first of two books(so far) in the series "Septimas Heap". The characters where very interesting and very funny. I did find the writing a bit childish, but who cares. Sage has possibly invented a great new writing style every Harry Potter, Eragon, or any other fantasy series fan will love. I swear I could not put that book down, and I groaned whenever I had too. Great book, and a solid beginning, read, and I promise you you will not regret it.

Ever since Harry Potter, the world of children's literature has been swarmed by wanna-bes, filling bookstore shelves with stories ranging from mediocre to absymal. This book breaks that mold. Magyk is filled with characters so real they practically leap off the pages. The plot is engaging, and the setting is, indeed, magykal. Kids who have been searching for another great fantasy world will love this book. I can't wait for the next one to come out. The only complaint I had about the book was that the font is different every time something magykal happens. That stylistic choice didn't add anything to the story for me. In fact, I found it a bit distracting. Not enough to knock it down to four stars though. It was still great.

This is one great book. Its got the Gothic feel, yet its not terrifying. Good for kids. There's alway something happening on every page and there are parts that are very funny and light. This is like Harry Potter, but it has a totally different feel to it. I'm not a fan of books about magic, but this was great. Everyone should try it.

Angie Sage is an amazing author. I think that the book Flyte was one of her best ones because it captures the reader's mind; I mean like you feel as if you are watching a movie when you read this book. I finished this book in three days. I just couldn't let go of it! But, I would recommend reading Magyk (book one) because you wouldn't recognize the people mentioned in the book. Anyway... this is definitely a unique read. Heads up Harry! A new wizard is on his way..... or, her way!

This book is perfect for young adults looking for a fresh voice in fantasy. While there are some name cross-ups from the Harry Potter series, Magyk is definitely a unique work.
I have to crack up at naming the sentry of the Young Army; Boy 412 and the stranger who saves his life the ExtraOrdinary wizard.
Like Bilbo Baggins himself, Boy 412 comes upon a ring that only he can wear only to come to the realization that the ring gives him Magykal powers.
Great pacing, and a fun read for all ages. I also highly recommend looking into the following if this one floats your boat:
The Uncommon Adventures Of Tucker O'Doyle
Night Of The Stalkers

This book is absolutely amazing! It has a lot of the same mysterious threads that makes great fantasy book - but also has some more "true to life" expectations when it comes to energy & casting of spells. (Meaning that you can't just flick your wand and get whatever you want instantly.) The assassination plot is great - as well as the images painted by Sage. Would recommend that any fantasy fan (and esp. any Harry Potter fan) pick this book up. You won't be disappointed!

This book was not bad, but it was not that great either. In fact it's a bit childish & the characters are a bit weak. I think the thing that gets me the most is how the adults can act like children about a potential threat right after experiencing a horrific event! I know people can be stupid, but if half of the population were as stupid as many of the characters in this book the human race would have been whipped out long ago!

Okay, maybe I just notice more than other people, but I think its rather obvious that (SPOILER WARNING) Septimus Heap is boy 412. Don't get me wrong, this is a good book, but it could have been even better if the suprise at the end was REALLY a suprise. I was rather shocked when in the beginning Septimus dies, I mean, who kills off the main character in the first chapter? When I read about boy 412 I almost immediately suspected him, even when apprentice's past is hinted at, I still had a lurking suspision that only grew as I read. As I said, Septimus's iddentity is hinted too much, but it still is a good book.

Very two-dimensional. Sage's history of writing picture books is evident in both the writing style and character development. The plot elements are plagarized and don't really hang together well. The climax and denouement don't provide any satisfying drama or surprise. The book would work for poor middle school readers or good ones in the early grades, but I wouldn't recommend it for smart tweens.

This is another one of those run-of-the-mill fantasy books with no original or unique ideas. The magic in the book is not extemely wonderfull, and the characters aren,t described as much and you can't reall relate to them like you can in good books. The plot is pretty typical, the child with magical powers is taken off by a teacher of magical powers and his family goes off to hide from the villan who is threatening the land. Of course, good triumphs over bad and the lost child is reunited with his family. Overall, this book is not that great.

Excellent read and the author is awesome! As as an adult fan of Harry Potter, I needed something to keep my interest going until the last HP comes out. I found this by accident. I LOVE IT!!! the battle of good vs evil is at its finest! I recommend for 8 and up.

The book starts out introducing you to a character name Silas Heap. Silas Heap sees a baby in the snow and pick her up and brings her home. Marcia, the extaordinary wizard tells him she was born to him. When he comes home a matron midwife shouts that their seventh son of the sevonth son, Septimus Heap is dead. Silas shows his wife Sarah Heap the baby he'd found. A few years later they find out that the girl they adopted(named Jenna Heap) is a princess. The queen had died the night Silas found Jenna in the snow.
10 years later the on Jenna's tenth birthday they find out that a person is after Jenna to finish what the assasin had setup. To kill the princess. The princess, her 6 brother, and Silas and Sarah Must hide. The princess leaves with Marcia the extraordinary wizard for her protection leaving the rest of her family. They encounter many mor people on their journey includin Boy 412 from the younge army who at first was trained to kill wizards, but then joins their side.
By the way who is Septimus Heap? Is he really dead? Find out.
I was surprised because I like this much better than Harry Potter. This is my favorite fantasy. This series in going to be great.

You will find your rental at the airport . South end of the parking garage. A-1. Facing the airport at Southwest Airlines.
Look for a black Dodge Durango. Place #23C-930. You will find your key, contract and parking ticket under the driver side mat.
The gas is on Full. There is a check engine light on. It comes on every time fuel is put in. Should go off after 40-60 miles. If not, do not worry, it is nothing that will have issues with the way it runs.
I have video of the mileage, damages to rental, and fuel.

I totally recommend this book if you like magic, dragons, and ... WIZARDS! Silas Heap was walking down a path that led to the Castle when he saw a baby. He took it home and found out it was the queen's. Now it all starts.
I think this is a great book because I love magic and adventures. Some parts have more action than others, making those parts better. My favorite part is when they slide down the rubbish chute, because it sounds fun. -- Mitchell

Fantasy is my favorite genre. When I got the first three books for my birthday, I thought: "Yay! Some new fantasy! Maybe it'll become my new favorite series!" I looked at reviews and after seeing people raving on about this book, I dove right into it. I knew it would be great. Boy was I wrong! It was a classic fantasy and boring to the nth degree. And every time Sage put the word 'Magyk' in her book, it was bolded. It was extremely irritating. I wouldn't have minded it so much if it was good writing, but her writing was choppy, the story didn't flow, and none of her characters were very likable. I couldn't even finish this. I stopped at Chapter 10 after struggling through the last nine chapters. I had thought that it would get better after the first couple chapters, but it didn't, so I gave up. I advise people not to waste their time reading this book. Try the Percy Jackson books instead. This book was not Magyk at all.

If you haven't read the works of Robert Stanek, you should pick those up before reading this book (and the rest of this series). Many contemporary writers seem to take crib notes from Stanek's works, but rarely give due where they should. Start with The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches books and go on to the Service of Dragons books. You'll note similar large casts of characters, similar structures to the story, and in some cases very similar plotting.

This was a nice book, I liked the mystery and all the magic. It has a good plot, and takes you on a wild roller coaster ride as you read. There is a hint of mystery, which is fun to figure out. This is a great book for fantasy lovers.

Inkheart is a book not only about the life of Maggie and her father, but of others too and even the young boy brought to life, Farid. Once you read this book, it leaves you wanting more. That was one of the good things about the book. All in all, I enjoyed this book and would reccomend it to all of you who enjoyed such series as the Series of Unfortunate Events, or even The Harry Potter series.

Magyk is a truly enchanted book based on the life of the Heap family. Ever since the day Septimus Heap died the day he was born and Silas Heap found a baby girl in the cold their life has been strange. Particularly the day the ExtraOrdinary wizard, Marcia Overstrand snuck them out of the castle away from the Assassins who plan to kill Jenna the now eleven year old girl that Silas had found in the snow on that day so long ago. On the magykal journey to smug the Heaps to safety, Jenna has found herself opening a whole new door, a door to a Magykal life. Also on this journey Marcia and Jenna stumble upon a cold to death youth army boy whom they take with them to the safe Aunt Zelda.
The Young army boy is called boy 412. The new family of wizards encounter action packed adventures to survive while trying to save the world from DomDaniel who by the way has just woken up from the dead. Through this twisted tale the Heap family (plus Marcia and Boy 412) come across fatal decisions and life lasting consequences. Right now, Septimus Heap is needed more than ever. So what really did happen to him, and will the Heaps ever withdraw from DomDanial's power. To know you must take a journey beyond your wildest dreams to a Magykal place. All I can say is watch out Harry Potter there's a new wizard coming your way.

The action take place early in the book, which I found good, and it didn't stop to some boring phase that goes for a long long while in the middle. Actually the events sequence & timing is so marvelous.
And just for the record; I loved Boy 412 soooo much the whole time. He is funny and rational at the same time. Also I loved Stanley, the massage rat.
I recommend this book to my friends and any reader, especially children; I think they will just love it.
