The first chapter seemed to appeal to me, it looked like it was going to go somewhere with a little dark humor thrown in. As I continued to read I found myself caring less and less about the characters. Darwinism is not alive and well in this story, some of the characters are too stupid to live. The story is predictable with nothing that surprised me at all. Finished the book only because I don't like to review a book without completing it first. Can't see myself reading the next installment.

I ALMOST stopped listening to the book... almost. I searched for other audibles to download. It started getting better about 8 chapters in... lol. Im currently still listening to it actually. I expected better.

Good start to a series, none of the survivors are recent soldiers.
The character I did not like gets killed off. To survive any apocalypse you need to want to live and be able to adapt to new situations, not moan and cry or expect rescue, or deny reality. Kill off the stupid.
A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Survival Thriller (EMP Survival Series Book 1) :: Happy Doomsday: A Novel :: A Post-Apocalyptic Action Thriller - The Alpha Plague :: Demolition Angel: A Novel :: Home Coming (The Survivalist Book 10)

I really enjoyed reading After. It was something to think about. I would have given 5 stars if the ending wasn't so sudden and without any real closure. Overall though, it was a really good thriller.

If you like stories of doom, gloom and what might happen, then it is an okay story. I prefer not to dwell on the negative side of things, so I did not enjoy this book much. It is a story of survival in the worst case scenario. .

The characterizations were good, and the story overall was good, but there was just something missing. Maybe things came together just a bit too easily, I'm not sure exactly what bothers me about it.

I love post apocalyptic books and have been wanting to try this one for a while. What a great read with a unique twist on the genre. The Zapheads were truly horrifying and the author has done some great world building. Can't wait to start the next one.

If you like books about what happens to people after a great cataclysmic event, you should enjoy this! Written about different people and their experiences in a totally changed world, I am looking forward to reading the next story in the series!

I really do love Scott Nicholson's work and really enjoyed this first book in the After series. He adds such a human and hopeful touch to the apocalypse genre. Rachel is such a compelling character that I can't wait to see where the series takes her. Great read!

"After: The Shock" is the first book of Scott Nicholson's "After" series. Actually, if you include the prequel, "After: First Light", it's the second book. It's not absolutely necessary to read the prequel...but I recommend that you do so you can get some great background information on the main characters of the series as well as to what led up to the world being as they now know it.

"After: The Shock" is a post-apocalyptic story about a group of people who struggle to survive a massive solar disruption and a large part of the population who are zombie-like (known as Zapheads in Scott's "After" world). Can you survive a world without electricity, communications, and technology? The "After" world is not like the world as we know it today. This is what the characters in "After: The Shock" have to face. (Better them than me!! :-)

I truly enjoy reading Scott Nicholson's work. He has a style that truly grabs ahold of you and draw you right into the story. Once you start reading, you won't want to put it down! He has a style that brings his characters and settings to life.

If you want to experience a post-apocalyptic world and truly care for the characters/people in it, I highly recommend the "After" series by Scott Nicholson!

Scott Nicholson really made me care about the characters and what will happen to them next. I can't wait to read the next installment. Well written and easy to read. All the things I look for in an author and in a book.

The first book in the series is an interesting change on the apocalypse genre. The writing is better than average, and contains very few grammatical errors. Easily worth the few dollars spent to add it to my collection.

It is a good story but not terribly original (how many post-apocalyptic stories are truly original these days?). Still I enjoyed the story. And the characters are mostly believable. I don't know if I will read the second one.

Scott Nicholson creates a world that is very possible and this story reads as if you are watching a movie. I have read the prequel and this one. Will see what happens to the survivors in the next one! Right recommend the AFTER series...

When something goes wrong with the sun a catastrophe of gastronomic proportion happens. With most of the humanity killed immediately among the survived are some deformed cruel and aggressive human beings called warheads. Grim tale about end of the world.

A massive solar flare has destroyed modern technology. The effects of the solar flare on people fall into one of 3 categories. Either they die (most people apparently), turn into sociopathic killers or remain "normal ".
The story follows 3 groups of people in North Carolina. One group is led by a professor from Wake Forest who has somehow determined that about 1 in a million stay normal and the sociopaths out number those about 10 to 1. With a population of roughly 10 million, that means about 10 normal people and 100 sociopaths in NC, but the professor is part of a group of 6. A second group is a Latino farm worker, his wife and daughter who find get stopped by a man in the mountains. The third group is man, woman and 10 year old boy who run into a fourth group of people who think the sociopaths are really enlightened by God.
By my count, that's 13 normal people plus the unknown number of wackos in one small area of the state. Didn't seem to hit the 10 to 1 ratio for the sociopaths either.
When the wackos tie the woman from the third group to a chair to to see how she manages the enlightened ones, I stopped reading. Was at 45%.

Scott Nicholson's take on the Zombie craze is entertaining and keeps me turning the pages despite my need for sleep. For one thing, we actually know what caused the Zapheads to come into existence. I came to care for the well-developed main characters very quickly and enjoyed the exploration of how living through something like that might affect their morals and test the foundations of who they thought they were. Great read, and so glad there is more to look forward to!
