Watch the movie, THEN read the book. The movie fleshes out the material so that you can enjoy the characters. This book was so insubstantial, it was like Steinbeck and Laura Ingalls Wilder co-wrote a book. The sentences were simple, the plot would have been great if the book was at least 200 pages longer. I love the story, but this book didn't tell it well. This book was more like a summary of a longer, better, really great book. This book attempted to convey emotion and underlying details, except it failed miserably, and unless you watched the movie first, you would miss most of the emotion and the beauty of the story.
Before I read this book, I watched the movie, based on the movie, I was ready to buy the whole series....and then I read this book. I will definitely not be getting the rest of the series.
Once again, Newbery Book began as an author's great idea, poorly executed, but catapulted by fame by a group of out-of-touch librarians.

A treasure whenever you read it..for me,in middle school and again as an old lady (to help my 3rd grade grandson). It spoke to me and my grandson! Treat yourself to read an old friend or read it to your grandkids..

I loved reading about the struggles of the family. Also i loved the return of the grandfather, and how it affected the entire family. Over time, relationships can mend and families can have peace and tranquility.

MacLachlan weaves words in a way that brings young readers together to appreciate the lives of different people and times in a very personal way. As a teacher, I joined my students in agonizing over the outcome of this family's journey. No short tale does this as profoundly, yet simply. How could this get less than five stars?
