Oh my goodness....I’ve never shed so many tears and yet experienced such joy while reading a book...this story grabs quickly and doesn’t let go - in fact you will be drawn in completely, heart, mind and soul. Beautiful. Poignant. Special. And you’ll never be able to forget the spectacular heart stomping ending. —After reading I immediately bought every Ellsworth book I could find!

SPOILER ALERT!!!!
This was a gritty story. Death row inmate convicted of murdering a judge. She is HIV+, a prostitute, horrible childhood, raped and Michael's daughter . Michael never knew about her. He runs to her rescue, risks everything to save her. I found his total acceptance and love of this girl remarkable. I don't think that most people would without proof.
The length people in power would go to protect this judge was eye opening. Also, how far someone would go to get what they want. How many people of color have been "framed"?? Good courtroom scenes.

This is a very imaginative book. It pulls you in right away, and you find yourself empathizing with Michael Gresham. What do you do when you suddenly find yourself the father to a child you didn't know existed, and that child is facing some life threatening problems? Mr. Ellsworth presented us with an excellent book, well written and thoroughly enjoyable.

You will feel the anxiety of the accused, the regretful mom, the surprised dad and accepting step-mom. You will wish for a truth to appear to change the execution date. You may sigh and be ready for any outcome at the eleventh hour. But one thing for sure, you will be entertained, hopeful, dismayed and curious from the moment you read the request for "Justis".

Fast-paced page-turner. I like the authors writing style. Great characters, and an intelligent and moving story. I appreciate how Mr. Ellsworth describes things without being overly descriptive, i.e. how the wind is blowing, how the air smells, etc. He found a perfect balance resulting in a well written story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Great book. Edge of your seat, page after page. Having been employed in a 'government court system' and experienced the pitfalls of clerks and judges who act out of 'route' instead of common sense and decency,it was refreshing to read of a clerk with a.heart. Great read.

This book has just made me a John Ellsworth fan. Intriguing, good crime novel. I like crime novels which include a lot of real facts about the judicial and police systems. I have read several more of his books the ones leading up to this novel. Love the writing, topic and suspense. Just a great crime writer.

I like Michael Gresham for his kindness and caring; really edge of your seat up to the very end. At times a bit of a stretch: he finds out he has a long-lost daughter and almost immediately decides to commit himself to proving her innocent of a murder . Still a good read.

Sometimes a book grabs you by your heart and mind and will not let go. This is undoubtedly that book. From the first page to the last one, Elsworth does a masterful job of pulling you thru the legalities of death row.

I should talk about the believable characters but all you need from me is, this is a John Ellsworth novel we've come to expect from him. It shows how the first duty of the Judicial system is to feed itself and take care of it's own. Fiction?, yes and still believable.

Gresham is a savvy attorney which makes some of his outbursts in court seem clumsy, not totally believable (even appreciating the fact that he is the defendant's father). And the ending feels contrived. However, I did relish the tension the author created and rode on the wings of Michael's growing indignation with his courtroom adversaries. Some good narrative... But still some disappointment.

With an excellent review of death penalty philosophy and politics, Ellsworth creates the impossible task of defending a death row prisoner. Even without hope, an individual might benefit from an unknown resource who risks all to bring help. Who stands up to the bullies who misuse their powers in public service? Does one victim have a chance?

Take the time to read this exceptionally well-written courtroom drama about a woman on death row, facing execution at any moment, and her lawyer/father who gives up everything to help his child. Thought provoking.

Liked the story line. Wrongful conviction is an important legal matter. Ellsworth style of writing is right up my alley. Doesn't over explain things. Great characters. I can't wait to read more of his books.

I just loved this walk down Mr. Greenspan's lain. One of the most heart wrenching legal thrillers I've read since A Time To Kill. And it is just as maddening. Buy the end of this one I wanted to revive someone, just so I could kill the again. Slowly.

Absolutely loved this book. Characters are interesting. What this says about me not sure but I did wonder about Michael and Veronas instant acceptance and unwavering love and acceptance of everything re Cache.

Everything is good with this book. You just cant put it down and will bring tears to your eyes. Very fast and emotional reading with the occasional humoristic part. First book I read from him but surely wont be the last.

This was my first Michael Gresham book and I loved it because of its unusual plot. There were many twists and turns that kept me reading into the late night hour. Buy it if you want to be teased and entertained.

Forget about the excellent writing, the great depth of characterization, the twists, turns, and emotionally charged scenes. What held me to this from beginning to end was that here is a Dad. This guy gets what it means to be a Dad. Not ashamed to show his love for his kids, is willing to go the distance and then some for every one of his kids. Because he's their Dad. The world needs more Dads like Michael Gresham.

This book captured my interest from the beginning. Even though it contained a great deal of legal jargon, it was interesting to those of us who are not the "lawyer types" because it presented the human interest side of all of the characters. A very good read. I rated it 4 and 1/2, but of course, the half doesn't show.

This book insulted my intelligence.
Pure bureaucracy, a violent old man trying to save his daughter (**SPOILER** - he won't - the DA will, due to guilty conscience), poorly written dialogue (just doing the dialogue - no "he shrugged" or stuff like that) which makes the characters seem like actors just delivering lines. Grammatical errors are littered throughout, getting me out of flow. 2 stars, because they bicharacters were more interesting than the protagonists.

I struggled to finish this book. The author could have cut about one hundred pages to make it more interesting. The plot was difficult to accept as realistic. The relationships were "cheesy." The author in trying to dramatize and leave the reader in a state suspense between chapters failed to do so. I just was unable to stay interested, and the only reason I finished was that I paid for the book.

First John Ellsworth book I disliked. In fact, I'm having trouble liking Michael Gresham PERIOD. Thaddeus Murfee kept me enthralled for many, many books so I know John can write a fabulous story with engaging characters. The daughter of Gresham, featured in this book, was just an awful person. Sorry John.
