I first discovered Shane being interviewed on a morning television show in Colorado. I only heard part of his interview, but it was enough to want me to go online to the store.com and purchase his book. His book is one of the most informative self-help books I have ever read, and I have read many. The book is an easy read. He gives precise and easy to follow instructions on what ten over-the-counter lifesaving supplements truly work, where to purchase them, their approximate cost, and the recommended dosage. In a few short weeks of using his recommended supplements, I am now finally free of blood pressure medications and statins, which in my estimation, were slowly draining the life out of me. Because of his book, I have since regained my good health and vitality.

This is the best book for natural cures and contains lots of valuable information. There is so much common sense information contained in this book. I love the straight forward way this is written. I would strongly recommend this book and I have purchased 6 copies to share with family and friends.

As a nurse who works in an alternative medicine clinic, I've met hundreds of people harmed by prescription drugs. Shane's book contains ten extremely useful and affordable solutions to keep you healthy without scary side effects. I was able to immediately put the information to use, giving my daughter garlic to cure her strep throat. She was better in 2 days AND we avoided a dangerous prescription. Keep the awesome, BS free information coming Shane!!

Excellent information and not out dated, if you purchased the book in 2009, there is an expanded edition. I was able to find the prostrate supplement at GNC (Men's ultra saw palmetto formula) this year without a problem. For those of you that are thin skinned or overly sensitive, or can't handle his passion or profanity, get over yourselves, this doesn't take away from the quality of the information. If you don't want to take him home and introduce him to Mom, I can understand, he probably wouldn't want to meet her anyway. I once asked him why his vanilla whey protein tasted so bad, his response "Butch-up Sally, it's good for you" .... I appreciated his candor and butch'd up until he came out with coco flavor. Excellent book and excellent TPC supplements, granted supplements that average $7.00/mo. aren't usually sold in packages of 10, so a bottle that lasts 5 months for $40 is equivalent, do the math.

Amazing information, right to the point, easy to read, well organized and most important topics you need to know for amazing health and quality life.
I loved his book so much compared to many others I have that relates to the same subject, I loved it to the point that I am even buying more to give to the people that I love the most.
Skin, aging, heart, cancer, detox, chioesterol, blood clots, cardiovascular function, sleep, anxiety, antibiotics, vaccines, prostate health, sight, vision, obesity, diabetes, thyroid, hormones, depression, prenatal, supplements, declining health.
Just mention it, it is there.
It tells you what to do, what to take, what not to take, dose, where te get it etc. and the most amazing is that you don't need to read pages and pages of info. He explains everything so simply, professionally (he is a chemist) and right to the point. I love this book.

I found the information in Over the Counter Natural Cures very good. The author in each chapter describes many of the common health problems and recommends natural
supplements for each. He describes how he worked for Big Pharma and when a natural product was researched and found beneficial, Big Pharma would make a synthetic copy
of the natural substance in order to charge much more money. Some of the natural remedies he advocates are Tumeric, Garlic, Hawthorne, Valerian, Cinnamon, Valerian, Milk Thistle, Alpha-lipoic acid and several more. The author also describes many of the bad effects of taking some of the common drugs on the market today.

I'm glad I read this, particularly since the price was only $2.99 when I bought a Kindle copy. I think that he has some good evidence for optimism in recommending these supplements, which does *not* mean that he has solid evidence that they're effective as claimed. I think that most of them are probably worthwhile, and they're all dirt cheap. I ordered several online, and I'll see how I feel in a couple of months.
He also makes some extraordinary claims about cholesterol and blood pressure numbers (basically that they don't matter). I don't feel that he backed up either claim, and there is enough contrary evidence that it seriously weakens his case overall. That's a shame, because this is a worthwhile read. In particular, his claims about how drug companies obfuscate the numbers to make their drugs look more effective is spot-on. I did some research about one drug that I'm taking, and realized that the drug company's own data seems to say that the drug is more likely to harm me than help me. I'll be having a heart-to-heart talk with my cardiologist (pun intended) at our next appointment.
Note that you can find the recommended supplements even cheaper than the author indicates if you look online. Just google the supplement names with "shopping" selected and you'll find several retailers that carry a month's supply for $4 or less. (I've been ordering from Swanson's lately, but you should do your own search because someone else may be cheaper next month.)
Good luck, and happy reading!

I like all the information provided and I think the author is believable. However, it's full of long ramblings and hype that isn't necessary. In a book like this I expect directness and I didn't like all the hype I had to sift through to get to the suggested cures.

I left the five star feedback below about this book months ago..But now I really need to warn others that this may not be the answer you are looking for.. My husband, who is a diabetic and has had a heart attack, became very ill following Shane's advice on how to wean one off of prescription drugs and control diabetis with supplements/diet. My husband is 72 and following his doctors advice and drug regiment, he has actually always controlled his sugar levels perfectly. The problem has been the side effects of the drugs, including aches and pains, having no motivation, etc.. We followed Shanes advice to the letter with such high expectations, but after being off his prescriptions completely for a couple of weeks, his blood sugar levels started going up little by little, he was peeing constantly and he became severly dehydrated.. He started taking his prescription drugs again and eventually had to have them increased a bit to get him back under control.. What we thought was a Godsend turned out to be a nightmare.. It isn't as easy as Shane makes it sound.. Following his advice can be very detremental to one's health...
We haven't given up on an answer though.. We are now reading books by Mark Stengler N.D. hoping to find a better, safer way to control his diabetis with diet and slowly reduce his need for prescription drugs.. Following Shanes advice could have led to disatrous results.. I don't think Shane really is qualified to make such simplified recommendations.. The book is full of very good info, but take it with a grain of salt.
My original feedback:
This book is full of really good information. My husband has been on 2 prescriptions for blood pressure and 2 prescriptions for type 2 diabetis for the last 7 1/2 years.. I have watched this man go down hill ever since.. He has constant aches and pains, has no motivation, behaves more like a patient than a husband, and adds daily complaints to his never ending list of problems.. He is not the man I married.. I have tried to get him to find an alternative solution to prescription drugs since he went on them, but his doctor refuses to help him, telling him he needs to get his cholesteral down before she'll even consider it (she pushes statin drugs every time he goes in for his checkup.. He tried them, they made him like a zombie and he told her absolutely no).. By the way, there is now a lot of info suggestioning that statin drugs can lead to heart attack as well as diabetis.. This doctor had my husband on a statin drug for the year before he ended up becoming a diabetic and had a heart attack. Before that, he was an exceptionally healthy man for his age (he is now 72)
We have read book after book about the dangers of prescription drugs, all about the side effects, books on what supplements you need to take to counteract what drugs are doing to your body, but nothing on how to get off these drugs for good, until I found this book.. First I listened to it on audible, then I bought the book.. On the website, he gives advice on how to wean yourself off the prescription drugs while replacing them with supplements. After a lot of consideration, we both agreed, this is worth the try...We both agree it would be nice to be able to do this under a doctors watch, but since we haven't been able to find a doctor willing to do this, what choice do we have? We don't have any naturalist/Hollistic doctors any where near us, so this book is the next best thing..
It's been a month, he took his last prescription drugs two days ago and will now be controlling his diabetis, blood pressure and health with supplements, diet and excercise... So far, his blood pressure and pulse rate have been perfecto, much better than on the drugs.. His sugar is higher than it was on metformin/glimeride, but we are working on that.. It hasn't been way out there, just not super low like it is on the drugs.. But to be honest, are those really low readings healthy? From the time he discovered he's a diabetic till now, the medical world has lowered the desired blood sugar levels several times. Honestly, IS that healthy? Our bodies do need sugar for energy.. keeping in mind that he has had no energy for the last 7 1/2 years and sits around doing nothing most of the time, one has to question if having very low blood sugar levels is actually a good thing! Just my opinion, not trying to sound like I'm an authority..
But the reality is, his levels are not as low as they have been following Shane Ellisons advice, but they aren't so super high that we need to worry. He first started using the Cinnamon recommended by Shane, but after some research, we have decided on another brand, which he just started yesterday..I have faith that by the 2 month mark, we're going to see his sugar levels being a consistant healthy reading...
We have also followed his advice for prostate health, eye health, etc... I've never been on any prescription drugs (I have always been leary of them), but I am also following much of Shane Ellison's advice for just staying healthy with the right supplements, and I have to say, I do feel more energetic.
There is very good info in this book. It takes a bit to put it all together and work out a plan, but we had to do the same thing when my husband was diagnosed 7 1/2 years ago.. It was all incredibly stressful and confusing... This is just another chapter that needs time to get used to doing things this way.. I bought my husband two pill boxes with 4 slots for each day (a weeks worth at a time)... Following Shane's advice on how to wean one off of prescription drugs while incorportating the recommended supplements, I filled 2 weeks worth at a time.. As I mentioned, today is the last day of week four and he has now taken his last dose of the prescription drugs so from here on out, we'll see how he does without them..
I took notes while listening to the audible book, then used the book as reference to what he should be taking, brands recommended, how much to take, etc... I've also used the website to get a lot of extra info.. We purchased many of the recommended brands, while deciding on other brands for some items.. We feel we've made the best choice for each supplements he's taking, based on Shanes description of what it is you need from each supplement..
It took time to get to this point.. It wasn't a fast fix.. You have to be dedicated enough to want it to work, and realize this is a different way of dealing with health issues.. But it isn't hard, it just requires time to get it all figured out and put it into action.
The only problem I have with Shane Ellison is that he now seems to have become very money driven.. He won't answer emails because he's just too busy.. His daily newsletters always contain info about his own personal products, which I'm sorry, but lets get real.. They are way over priced.. Considering the fact that he wrote this book to help people spend less money while staying healthier, it's a little irritating that he now pushes his own products so much..
I was curious as to what would make his personal products any better than just buying supplements. If you look at the ingredient list for each of his products, they don't contain anything different than what he recommends in his book. For instance, his Cinnergy product, which is for blood sugar control, contains cinnamon and milk thistle..buying a bottle of his brand is going to cost you a whole lot more than just buying a good brand of cinnamon and milk thistle seperatly.. We first bought the Cinnamon he recommended, but with further research, found that True Cinnamon, from Swansons, contains the preferred brand of Cinnamon called Ceylon.. As an example, the Sundown Cinnamon he recommends cost about $8 for a bottle of 200, the swansons True Cinnamon we prefer costs about $7 a bottle for 90 and a bottle of milk thistle costs around $5. Either way you go, it's going to cost you about $15 a month for these two items.
To get the same amount of Cinnamon and Milk Thistle from Shanes product "Cinnergy", your actually going to need 1 1/2 bottles, which cost $34.95 a bottle.. So quite a bit more in cost.. On his website, it states that there are 60 capsules in each bottle, which will last 1-7 months.. Serving size for his product is 1 capsule, 60 servings per bottle.. Following his advice for how much cinnamon and milk thistle to take each day, you actually would need 90 servings of his product a month, so one bottle will not last one month, let alone 7 months!
I wrote him asking a question about Hawthorn, which he recommends for keeping your blood pressure down.. In his book it states you shouldn't take this if you are going to take blood pressure medication as it will lower it too much. Okay, I wanted to know what that meant as far as weaning one off the prescription.. Does that mean on the days he takes prescriptions, he shouldn't take the Hawthorn, or does it mean he shouldn't start the Hawthorn at all until he has been completely weaned off the prescription drug.. I wrote his company asking and received the reply like so many others have, stating he receives so many emails every single day he just can't possibly answer any of them... And then they direct you to the website and to his products...
It seems he's become more motivated by money at this point than in helping people get healthy affordably.. I guess everyone wants to make a buck, and I'm very thankful for the info he has provided in his book, but we did all buy his book, which made him a profit.. It's unfortunate that greed seems to be a motivator for him now, pushing his products, just like the pharmacutical companies he dislikes so much... Just saying!!!!!

Great book! Lots of excellent information to apply to your health improvement regimen that will deliver the results. A rare thing to be treasured!
I've been using the information in this book for over a year now and it has changed my life from a tired, drag ass existence, to a more alert person that actually feels like life is worth living and will get even better.
I appreciate the fact that Shane gives me the information to improve my health with items purchased over the counter. That's what I did in the beginning, and got great results. Then I started having difficulty finding a some of the supplements in several different stores and online, so I finally opted for the convenience of ordering from his website to save time, effort and money in exchange for his superior products. I started using one item to judge the effectiveness and have slowly added almost all of the products that Shane sells, because they are items that truly work. All you have to do is try them and you will notice the difference.
I still have some work to do with my health, but with Shane's email information that keeps me reminded of all the LIES the health and food industries has fed the public, I know I can win this war!

In case you have not been paying attention Shane Ellison has been helping individuals steer clear of the big Pharma propaganda and provides facts in simple to understand terms. He does not discuss things as if he was speaking to a fellow group of biochemists but instead helps average people understand and improve their health.
If you are on high blood pressure, high cholesterol medicine or worse you need to get this book. If he reduced this book to one chapter I would pay the price, too bad it is not covered under our 'wellness' plan ;)
If you have been questioning the new H1N1 (a.k.a. the swine flu) information coming from the CDC and are understanding that maybe all the big pharma and government sponsored health programs are not what they appear then do yourself and your family a favor and get this book. This is what we are getting every adult we know for Christmas.

I have read or listened to fifty books on nutrition and health and this is one of the very best. I have listened to it going on my 3rd time right now with new things I have missed. The author explains how we have been fooled by the government and the drug companies and our own doctors to accept prescription medicines for everything and endure the side effects of failing health when either no prescription was necessary or a natural supplement without side effects was far better than the chemical produced in a lab. Best of all, Shane Ellison is a chemist who worked for a big pharmeceutical company and knows what he is talking about. Read this book and change the way you think about your health.
I have cut myself off of 3 meds that I have been on for years: flomax for the prostate, thyroxine for the thyroid, and losartan for blood pressure and replaced them with "no side effects" natural alternatives and also cut out sodas, fast foods, processed foods and most sugar, white flour, potatoes, rice and replaced my poor diet with a healthy one of whole foods, fruits and vegetables. I feel better than I have in years.

While reading the interesting dialog, I found several things that changed my health in a short period of time. My HDL was struggling in the low twenties, and I had reason to believe the statin drugs prescribed, were not going to change it in a significant amount. Statins had moved it three points in 1 year. With the Cinnamon and Milk Thistle additions, my HDL moved 10 points in 90 days. This was an amazing, no side affect, no risk solution to a condition, which had become a major concern after 50. Thanks Shane for your insight.

Everyone should read this book to find out the truth about prescriptions and what they do to you. Also, the cholesterol myth is eye opening. I had a friend that was going down hill fast. I asked him what the problem was. His doctor put him on all kinds of medicine. I gave him the book. He threw away his meds and got Ellisons recommendations instead. You could see him steadily becoming his old self again in a few weeks. I did not get this book for free nor any free formulas from The Peoples Chemist. Just a huge fan.

They guy has alot of good points but I personally was put off by his language (cursing). I think he could tone it down a bit. His book is a practical guide to supplementation so if bad language is your thing then you will like this book.

Incredible book by the People's Chemist here. I stumbled across his website and was obsessed for days. His philsophy was something that I was searching for an incredibly long time. I always knew that prescription drugs, artificial sweeteners and the average clueless doctor was destroying the health of americans. Shane proves this all to be true in a concise, easy to understand, and sometimes comical way. The great thing about this book is that he actually recommends specific brands that are affordable and easy to find. The only thing I wish the book contained was more specific guidance in terms of diet and exercise. Hopefully shane has something in the works. If you are sick of the clueless doctors who prescribe dangerous medication like its candy then do yourself a favor and buy this book now.

Only 4 stars because the links and sources have not been updated. Most can be purchased on the store though. I have many health issues which are quickly resolving-yeah. And people who have known me for years say I look radiant, and I feel better than I have in decades, plus I have lost 14 pounds in 3 weeks!

There are certainly no shortage of books on health and nutrition, but what sets this one apart is the author's expertise as a chemist with a pharmaceutical background. Most books leave you wondering whether the author knows anything about what they're talking about. This, on the other hand, provides factual information for us skeptics. I highly recommend it. Do I follow all of his recommendations, probably not, but I do so as an informed consumer.

My husband and I have been actively researching natural means of maintaining and improving our health. As a 50 yr-old wife and mom of two young daughters, I wanted to increase my energy level and lose belly fat. My 55 yr-old husband also wanted to increase his energy and lower his blood pressure naturally, without staying on Lipitor for the rest of his life. After paying through the nose to be treated by a local naturopath, and seeing little results, we stumbled upon Shane Ellison's book. What a Godsend! The book details Shane's experience working for a big pharma company as an organic chemist, which drove him away from our country's deadly prescription paradigm. (How about the fact that one of our nation's most popular "cancer-fighting" drugs is actually highly carcinogenic itself?) He offers natural, herb-based alternatives to poisonous prescriptions - which the prescriptions are based on to begin with! We have used Pain FX - a natural alternative to all pain relievers, Serotonin FX - a natural alternative to sleeping pills, and are now trying Cinnergy and Cardio FX. Our results have been fantsatic. I recently gave some of our Sleep FX to a friend who has suffered from persistent insomnia despite many different treatments, and she has slept like a baby for the first time in years! Read this book, and you will go on a completely different path to health.
