Eaters of the Dead
Eaters of the Dead

Review:EATERS OF THE DEAD is an interesting historical novel that takes place in 922 A.D., during the time of the Vikings. Michael Crichton uses this time period to essentially retell the story of BEOWULF, which he felt was too boring and tedious for modern audiences. The story involves a small band of Vikings that journey northward to attack a group of monsters (whose true identity is revealed at the end of the book).

This book is actually pretty interesting, but it's told in rather dry, old-... Read more

The Glass Bead Game: (Magister Ludi) A Novel
The Glass Bead Game: (Magister Ludi) A Novel

Review:So disappointed - bought this solely because it won a Pulitzer. Writing was heavy handed and the vocabulary condescending. Seriously, how many times is too many to use the work "bourgeoisie" in the first few pages. Compared to elegant Siddhartha, this book is a mess. Read more

How Proust Can Change Your Life
How Proust Can Change Your Life

Review:Brilliantly witty and erudite, at home in English and French, knowledgeable in art and literature, Alain de Botton mixes genres to pull out lessons on life and love from Proust's works, while also discussing Chardin and Ruskin and numerous other artists and writers, in addition to discussing Proust's long sentences in a picturesque manner that all really does make us think about our own lives, behavior, and relationships. The French Laundry Cookbook (The Thomas Keller Library)
The French Laundry Cookbook (The Thomas Keller Library)

Review:Thomas Keller is the number one chef in this country. Having had the experience of eating at French Laundry and, myself, graduating from Cordon Bleu, this book could not be better. The recipes are wonderous and the photography is amazing. NOT a book for beginners! But hell, after you've mastered the kitchen reward yourself with this book! Read more

550 Recipes For Every Day. Healthy and Delicious Meals. Simple and Clear Instructions.
550 Recipes For Every Day. Healthy and Delicious Meals. Simple and Clear Instructions.

Review:Annoying to use, and very poorly organized. Very short recipes that are repeated in various forms with a minor ingredient change, all about 1 page or less in length, and no rhyme or reason about organization of the recipes. You can't lookup ingredients, and every time you want to use this, you have to basically read the entire table of contents looking for a recipe. Read more

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Penguin Clothbound Classics)
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Penguin Clothbound Classics)

Review:Again, another title most people who have seen the movie instead of reading the novel first. I must admit the Disney version is a classic in and of itself but the book is so much better as is the case with most books made into movies. It is great read and should be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Read more

Bouchon Bakery (The Thomas Keller Library)
Bouchon Bakery (The Thomas Keller Library)

Review:Overall, a very good selection of recipes. Instructions are specific and easy enough to follow to yield great results. My only quibble is that there seems to be quite a bit of specialized equipment/ingredients with the recipes written for their specific use. Takes a bit of effort to adapt to whatever you have in the house, but not too bad. Read more

Wind, Sand and Stars (Harvest Book)
Wind, Sand and Stars (Harvest Book)

Review:St.-Exupery led a life full of adventure and danger, and he chronicles it in an engaging way. And all the adventures and descriptions of people and things give rise to philosophizing or musing on life and the human condition. Wonderfully well-written to judge by the translation. Very glad to have read this book.
