Review:This short novel contains a story within a story. The frame story is a dinner conversation in Lahore between a Princeton-educated Pakistani and an American visitor to the city, as the result of what appears to be, as least ostensibly, a chance encounter. Within that story, forming the core of the novel and of the dinner conversation, is the account by Changez, the Pakistani, of his glory days as a top student at an elite American university, his work as a star rookie at a Manhattan valuation, ... Review:This book helps to dispel the concept of the “overnight success story” or the idea that high performers are pre-ordained from birth. Rather, the author credits much of their success to what he calls “Deliberate practice”, a highly structured process that involves well designed practice activities, coaching, repetition, feedback, self regulation, building knowledge and mental models.
The mental model concept is particularly interesting, this being the idea that all high performers possess ... Read more
Review:For years, I used erotica books as surrogate fantasy material, believing that I was incapable of fantasizing during sex, that I had no fantasies of my own and had to use other people's. Reading "My Secret Garden" changed my perception of myself drastically. Those horrid, disturbing thoughts that floated into my brain, that I would shove down quickly as "sick," were indeed fantasies. The brave women who contributed their fantasies and feelings showed me that even if what I was drawn to was "si... Read more
Review:I am a great admirer of Dawkins and his lucid writing, but was curious to see wether this applied to writing for youngsters (having a 15 year old grandson). Happily this turned out to be the case. A minor point: as a MD I thought the medical part a little bit weak. Read more
Review:Growing up in west Texas and playing football and always hearing about Permian becomes a way of life. It' like teams sit around on Friday afternoons and think about they will be immortalized if they could win. This book opens doors to dreams that everybody has and few achieve, winning championships. This book tells of a team that can not stand to lose, and that will do whatever it takes to with hold the dynasty of Permian football. Bissinger tells of how some of the players don't have anythi... Review:Stories were good for children, though a little graphic in parts. I expected Ali Baba and agencies, and was disappointed. The foreword explained how this was an original version and that older versions did not include these stories. However, I enjoyed most of them and got a small taste of old Arabic/Oriental culture. Do read if you're curious.... Read more
Review:The authors used two decades of research on attachment theory to explain, in clear and simple terms, how to identify an appropriate match and how to constructively work through conflict. A compelling book. Read more
Review:Excellent. It gives you the story from inside and behind close doors. I read this Thanksgiving weekend and even though Donald Trump was not my candidate of choice, after reading this book, I was so thankful Hillary did not win the election for President. Read more
Review:Only 200? I can think of at least 100 more, not including all the broken, outlandish promises ("lowering the seas"), and simplistic throw-ins to non-existent assertions ("The Alaska Natives" called it Denali, which is a foolish lie). Every example of Obama's arrogant over-reach is carefully exposed. The damage to the prestige and credibility of the Presidency is forever damaged. Read more
