Review:I slogged through the first half of this book and finally gave up. It's just stultifyingly dull. I was reading it as one of those classics that everybody has read, and I remember liking Lawrence's The Rainbow in college, but life is too short for me to bother finishing this one. Read more
Review:Totalitarianism. It’s not a concept that we are very familiar with; those of us who have been born free. The sludge of fear, every decision weighed not against what is good and just and right, but instead against what the ‘powers’ will think; the battle to deny self but not lose your spirit in the process – tiny acts of rebellion unidentifiable to the minders but nevertheless something that is your own, a fake accent or a carefully planned ‘accident’; not sabotage but just orchestrated carelessn... Review:It's sized *just right* to NOT fit comfortably in the calf pockets or shoulder pockets of the newer Army OCP uniform. The translation is atrociously hard to read. Passages look clumsy, and lack of punctuation doesn't make it any easier. In a tactical environment, the best translation is one where a service member can glance at it's pages and grab some quick inspiration if you have downtime for a five minute smoke break. It shouldn't take five minutes to untangle the translator's verbiage. I *... Read more
Review:Once again I enjoyed another great read from Ms. Gaines. Zeke the savior had demons, but he was working his way through them.Aisha/ Tameka well found herself in a bad situation but was determined not to give up on herself. This journey between those two takes us to some dark places,( Ms. Gaines you caught me off guard again) .But grace of God and the Patience and love of a good man helped right a almost sinking ship. The Neary family is pretty amazing also.
Now then there is this, I'm I the ... Read more
Review:The recording offered here by Blackstone Audiobooks is an astonishing bargain. Frederick Davidson's unabridged (13-hour 11-CD) rendition of Jackson-Knight's classic prose translation of the Aeneid is well done and at a price that beggers belief. The only reason I hesitated before giving it a well-deserved five stars is that I personally found Davidson's delivery to be rather camp to my English ear, which did mean I had to listen for a while to tune into the words. Then it was wonderful. Read more
Review:This book has been absolutely great. I appreciate the detailed framework but it doesn't bog you down. I use it in combination with the free app Duolingo and feel like I've made 11/2 years progress in 6 months.
On the CD they speak slowly, clearly and pause for you to practice between each word. I continue to go back and brush up or jump ahead if I need grammar help for Duolingo. Read more
Review:This is a thrilling, sometimes repetitious, but ultimately rewarding book. And while this is the first one I have read by Ken Wilber, it will certainly not be the last.
"A Brief History of Everything" is structured dialogically, a series of interviews in which Wilber plays both himself and his interlocutor. The structure is both accommodating and sophisticated: one the one hand, the dialogues create a conversational tone, and this makes Wilber's ideas more readily accessible to a general ... Read more
Review:Terra was fleeing an abusive relationship and emotional loss when she came to Holmes Crossing. Her first encounter with RCMP Jack was a precursor to what was ahead. After her arrest and bail from her sister, Leslie, she thought running away to avoid being caught by her ex- boyfriend, Eric, was the right answer. But God had other plans. This book was just as good as the previous one. I like the inclusion of Bible verses in conversations to show new believers the depth of God's love and grace. Ter... Read more
Review:A wonderful surprise as I mistakenly ordered this book. I was looking to buy "The Boys in the Boat", which I recently have ordered. But back to the "Boy in the Boat" which I found to be well written and held my attention from the first page until the last. I recommend this book for an insight to what was a view of Ireland and the struggles of it's people. The main character is most interesting in his upbringing - or lack of - and the many trials he endured during his life. Lots of sadness, bruta... Read more
