Christian Living
Review:Anne's words take this huge often (always?) mess of a world and brings it down to the elements that matter. It's not answers, it's directions. I don't know how she has managed this, my brain swirls with trying to understand it and she is one of the few that makes it make sense for me. It's calming. This book is like a crack that lets the light in - or makes you realize there is light everywhere in disguise, or that we have the ability to be light, no matter our circumstances. Read more
Review:"On my forty-ninth birthday, I decided that all of life was hopeless, and I would eat myself to death." So begins PLAN B: Further Thoughts on Faith, a collection of delightfully honest and gritty essays from Salon.com columnist Anne Lamott.
Lamott, like the best essayists, finds most of her inspiration in the ordinary stuff of living: the exhaustion of parenting, the frustration over a middle-aged body, and despair over the state of the world. In OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS, Lamott gave us a w... Read more
Review:I thoroughly enjoy the author's down-to-earth faith, devoid of religious politically correct language, and simultaneously truly compassionate with the "salt of the earth". From my perspective, she "gets it", or should I say, gets who Jesus truly is. Read more
Review:All my friends loved Anne Lamott before I knew who she was. As soon as I read Traveling Mercies, I was hooked. I've read much of her work since and I've much enjoyed the journey. This is a great place to start. Read more
Review:Anne Lamott has an easy manner that makes you feel like you're having a heated conversation with your best buddy sitting at the kitchen counter drinking coffee; her writing is honest, caring, and fun, even talking about grace and faith.
You will find this book to be a great read because it will make you look within yourself and think things through. I love writing that surprises me with simplicity and originality. "Grace (Eventually)" shows a softer side of Anne, a maturing and acceptan... Read more
Review:There is no better example of a true and dedicated friendship, the gift of giving, inspiration, adventure and the triumph of the human spirit than I'LL PUSH YOU.
To quote Yates, "Think where men's glory begins and ends, and say my glory was that I had such friends". Read more
Review:First few chapters are exciting, retelling some of his life challenges/surgery stories.
Later chapters are really his pep-talk on how to live your life according to your principles, and to be courageous. Read more
Review:A somewhat wandering yet poetic thought process and journey of finding hope, peace, and joy in life by allowing yourself to be broken and used by God. At times author is too wordy, yet I appreciate her honesty - it's nice to know others struggle too and others also learn through a process that takes time. Read more
Review:I bought this book because I thought the author was a Christian, and Amazon categorized it as Christian. I was hoping for some references to scripture along with some suggestions to get my house into better order. I have only read the first chapter, and I do like her writing style, but would NEVER have bought the book if I actually knew what to expect. My major issue is with the dedication. It is wonderful that she honors her mom, but she uses the phrase "you are my idol". I don't think a book m... Read more
Review:I love Emily's vulnerability & her practical wisdom that she shares in this book. I'm not a mom, but I am a business owner and I related so much of what she talks about in regards to the expectations that we place on ourselves. It was an easy read & I loved the photos that were included. Read more
