Review:A deeply personal and professionally enlightening account of survival and liberation. A book anybody troubled with sorrow and/or anger, an overly critical and negative self image can learn from. It’s honest and compelling with a lot to teach us all how to be better human beings. Read more
Review:I saw the movie before purchasing the book. I was disappointed with the book. I was hoping to read about Bart's life in greater detail and the struggles he went through as a child. The book was more about his travels with the band. Not what I expected Read more
Review:Beautifully and honestly written. I was absolutely captivated by Ann Patchett's writing and definitely plan on reading some of her other earlier works. I bought this after hearing her in an NPR radio interview. Highly recommended! Read more
Review:I don't know what I was expecting but this wasn't what I thought. It was well written and I did laugh a few times but I thought the stories should have been chronological. The author probably had a reason . I read the whole book so it kept my attention Read more
Review:I have to strongly disagree with the editorial and reader reviews on this essay, even though it was a national bestseller. The book is touted as possibly the most rational description of a descent into morbid, clinical depression and suicidal despair. I didn't find it so. Styron was descriptive but rather than probing and baring the depths of his mind and emotions during his depression, I felt he only hinted at the tip of the iceberg. I didn't find any riveting, palpable tracing of his depressio... Read more
Review:The grammar in this book is awful.
And the stories literally jump all over the place, with no rhyme or reason as to why.
Yet...it's endearing.
You can literally hear Drew, in our valley girl-esque voice, whispering these stories to you as you read.
And because I happen to love Drew Barrymore (we're even the same age), I really enjoyed her off-the-wall stories. This book makes her seem less "daughter of the great Barrymore legacy" and more "stay at home mom with a wild past."<... Read more
Review:LOVE Peter Falk, and this book is just fabulous. Short, entertaining, often laugh-out-loud funny vignettes of his life experiences as an actor, producer, artist, and more. Falk was such an enormous artistic, creative talent who quite simply knew how to tell a story. LOVED this book. Read more
Review:Like others, I bought this book after seeing Miss de Rossi on Oprah. I'd liked her character on Ally McBeal, and I love Ellen, so those were two reasons to consider it.
The book grabbed me from page one. I was mesmerized by her accounting of bulimia and anorexia, and couldn't believe that she could continue to function on so few calories! I found myself thinking about her unsettled life well after I put the book down.
I do wish, however, that she had described her childhood a li... Read more
Review:Told with class. After reading this book I am more in touch with the real truth and not some fabricated Hollywood tale of romance (between June and Johnny). This may be only my opinion but bottom line is Vivian was a first class lady that was above the nonsense and illicit behavior she was subjected to during her marriage. Some people party like rock stars ( or country stars) their entire life. I would think a life lived in a such a way would be nearly a complete blur and much regret would follo... Read more
Review:This book never grabbed me the way "The Glass Castle" did. I don't think it is appropriate to judge someone else's life. That is why I am issuing three stars for the amazing ability to complete a novel. I found myself bored many times throughout the story and I felt it ended very quickly after so many years. I would have liked more of the after story. What happened the day the Mom finally leaves this earth? How did they all find their mates? After such a troubling childhood, "what happene... Read more
