I was rummaging trough the store looking for some nice, light-hearted slow-burn romances... and finally I've found a book which has everything I counted on. Nicely developed characters, sweet, slow-building love, a few obstacles...

Slow burn romances are now one of my favourite reads. I loved watching Vera and Killian's relationship slowly develop, and how snarky they were towards each other initially. Killian's reviews of her food bought a smile to my face each time it happened.

Vera is initially very wary of relationships due to her previous relationship being horrible, the ex partner abusive. It takes her some time to find herself again, and to feel safe at the idea of being in a relationship. I loved her journey to happiness, and Killian was so sweet and protective of her. I'm so looking forward to the next book in the series, even though it is about 2 different characters that showed up in this book, I'm excited to read about them and also see where Vera and Killian are and what they are doing.

I truly don't know where to begin. These characters and this story pulled me in and kept me up late. Fantastic and witty banter between these two chefs had me laughing out loud several times. One of my favorites reads of the year so far! I really don't want to spoil anything so I'll just say... Go one click this now! The chemistry is ridiculous and you'll fall in love with Vera and Killian just like I did.

I adored every delectable morsel of this book. This was one of the best slow burning romances that I’ve read in quite some time. The author took her time to develop the characters and their relationships, allowing her readers to become acquainted with them, to feel for them, and to fill her readers with anticipation with every turn of the page.

The Opposite of You hooked me from the very beginning. It is brimming with realistic characters and emotions. Nothing about this story is forced or rushed. The story flows effortlessly, providing an authentic, engaging reading experience. I didn’t want to put it down once I began reading it, and I certainly didn’t want to see it come to an end.

After spending two soul-crushing years in an abusive relationship and one year-long trip to Europe to try to regain a bit of herself, Vera is back in her hometown, sleeping in her childhood home, trying to put the pieces of her life back together. As a graduate of culinary school, she has always dreamed of running her own kitchen in a top restaurant, but her last relationship not only damaged her self-worth, but also made her dreams feel completely out of reach. Cooking is her joie de vivre, giving that up is not an option. Vera’s new plan has been to put all of her effort and what little money she has into owning and operating her very own food truck. She has her truck, she has help from her family and best friend, she has a prime location to park...she also has one of the top restaurants right across the street from her, along with the egotistical, cocky, brash executive chef who hasn’t exactly rolled out the ‘welcome mat’ for her.

Killian Quinn is confidence personified. He is a skilled, revered chef who has already made his mark on the culinary world. He isn’t the easiest man to work for. He runs a tight ship. He expects the best from his employees and the masterpieces that come out of his kitchen, they are, after all, a reflection of his craft and expertise. He’s earned his swagger through hard work and dedication. He’s one of the best, and he knows it, but he’d be lying if he said that he wasn’t curious about the new food truck across the street, the food that it was serving, and the woman who was running it.

I loved the interactions between Vera and Killian. She was already familiar with his reputation in the kitchen, but she wasn’t expecting him to be so boorish, rude, and insulting about her venture and her food. Despite her past experience with chefs of his caliber, she was still put-off with his blatant self-importance and superiority. But in all honesty, that’s what made this book so much fun. I loved how they sparred, reacted, pushed each other’s buttons. It was this back and forth, animosity, and tension that made every one of their conversations, notes, and messages so entertaining and irresistible. It only helped to intensify their sexual chemistry.

I was completely enamored with this couple and their budding romance, but Vera’s own growth and strength never took a backseat in the book. This was always her story. This was about her realizing her worth, believing in herself, and learning to let go of all the negativity that was drilled into her. I wanted nothing more than for her to achieve her dreams. I wanted her to see that she was brimming with talent and potential. I also wanted her to be able to open herself up to falling in love again. I was waiting on pins and needles for her to see that maybe the opposite of what she wanted was exactly what she needed.

With rich, intriguing characters, fantastic dialogue, humor, romance, and a great deal of heart, The Opposite of You had all of the elements that I love when reading a contemporary romance.

This book was a five course meal with an extra dessert!

I always adore Rachel's Contemporary Romance stories (almost as much as I love her Zombie series haha) and now with this newest release she gives us another unforgettable pairing. I have often gotten tired of the same ol' same ol' occupations in novels and so to see one like Vera-- a food truck owner/operator and Killian -- a chef at a elite restaurant nearby made this a unique set up that immediately pulled me in. (Running a food truck has always been a secret dream of mine but shhh don't tell k? )

One of the reasons I am always drawn to Rachel's novels is her character development -- she has these relatable characters that seem like you have been right there with them for years and yet when she gives us their backstories it seems like its just a nudge or a reminder about what happened. . . She dosen't beat us over the head with chapters and chapters of information overload haha it has a very organic feel happening in line with what is currently happening in the story.

I freely admit that while I loved Vera's character from the beginning it took me a bit to warm up to Killian, at first his chef with a god complex kinda got to me so I loved it when Vera was sassy to him. . . But gradually he began to be someone I rooted for because he was so driven and focused and he helped Vera realize how amazing she is.

Sometimes self doubt and letting someone else dull your shine can take a toll on your life and Vera has had to deal with that in spades with what happened with Derrek (and then some) so her journey of believing in herself and her talent in the chef game is an inspiring journey. Rachel really gives the reader a glimpse into Vera's head and the very real impact on how toxic relationships can be extremely difficult to move on from.

This is another thought provoking, extremely memorable (becuase its edgy and groundbreaking - breaks the mold) kind of read by one of my favorite authors. . . Beware you will be on the lookout for a snack while reading this one so stock up accordingly!

Rachel Higginson is as always my comfort food. I know without a doubt that any time I open one of her books I'm going to love it. It doesn't matter what she cooks up, what genre or age group. Babes, she writes them all, and she does it seamlessly and flawlessly. I'm going to be pulled into the lives of the characters, carried away by the flow of the story, and left feeling so satisfied by the end. Yet I still always want more, I never get tired of it.

The Opposite of You was no different. It was unique in its plot (which considering how many books this lady has written is a commendable skill) with fresh characters and even fresher cooking anecdotes. I was hungry pretty much the entire time I read, and found myself desperately craving food truck comfort food.

The romance pulled from some well loved tropes, then added new spices and mixed them up into something wholly new and exciting. It was all the delicious swoons that had me devouring it page by page until I looked up and it was over, my plate was clean. I would have ordered seconds right then if it had been an option. I was squeals and shrieks to realize there was a book two in this series.

The secondary characters are as important and crucial to the story as the main, and everyone is so we'll developed I could almost picture myself driving over to shop at Vann's, or making reservations at Lilou's. I'm not that far from where the story takes place and I was half convinced sometimes that I could just drive out for some food truck comfort food, with a twist.

Don't deny yourself this loaded pleasure, it has no calories and it's guaranteed to tickle every taste buds your swooning self has. ~ 5 stars and seconds please!

I've never read a single thing by Rachel Higginson until The Opposite of You. I had no idea what I was in for and honestly, I usually find that the books that are getting so much hype tend to be something I'm not really into. But I've been searching for a new book that could suck me in I figured why not give it a try.

I sat down and began reading once the kids were off to school and didn't stop until I was done. Everything got pushed to the side so I could read Vera and Killian's story. And when I was done I sat on my couch astounded.

What did I just read? Why haven't I tried this author before now!? Why did this beautiful, funny and fairly honest book about taking chances and opening yourself up to possibilities that scare the heck out of you have to end!? How was I going to go one now that I had read Vera and Killian and watched them push through to get what they wanted?

And how was I going to write a review for a book that deserves way beyond a 5* rating? With witty, and awkward banter between chefs, a storyline that flows fantastically, secondary characters that make me want to beg for their stories, and Killian-whoa was he intense...how was I going to write a review that did them justice?

I still don't know and I'll probably rethink and wish I could rewrite this a dozen times so I don't come off as a nut, but for me, this is as good as I can do. There are too many emotions still swirling around after three days post reading, I can't put into words how much adored this book and how I wish it hadn't ended. I would most definitely never complain if a novella of Killian and Vera happened to pop up.

There's something to be said about an author that is able to have you completely entranced with the story from the very beginning. I was obsessed with this cover. The words within were just as beautiful.

Vera is on her last plan. She's extended all of her resources, she's been all over the world, she's ready to accomplish her dream. Only, running a food truck wasn't part of that dream. Life has a funny way of showing you where you're supposed to be.
Killian. Dark. Mysterious. Brooding. World-renowned, award winning chef. You think he's a complete ass in the beginning and then you start to peel back the layers. Very surprising layers.

Ms. Higginson has a gift that keeps me coming back for more. Her ability to write this enemies to lovers romance in such a way that these characters become a part of you. Vera really came out of her shell. Some walls had to be broken down, picked away. She and Killian both had things they had to overcome. Little details here and there craft a story that I became absolutely addicted to. I couldn't get enough.

Hey Rachel Higginson, this book is crazy!
I NEED the next one, so write it baby!!

First let me say, that I got to beta review this book. However, I would like to add that I wasn't completely sold on this book when I read the premise. (The description was great but I wasn't sure if I would want to read about a food truck.) Once I got into reading this book I could not put it down. What a breath of fresh air this book was!! The characters had a real complexity to them and yet it wasn't so intense that it felt too heavy to read.

My only frustration was that I wanted to reach into the book and simultaneously take the main character into a big bear hug and kick her in the shins. Her feelings/thoughts about her self were off kilter, due to her previous relationship. Which, I guess, could be seen as a good thing since the story and characters made me so invested in the story.

Bottom line, though, I cannot wait for the next one!!

The Opposite of You really caught my eye from the moment I saw it!

I absolutely loved the cover for this book! It’s nice to see a cover that isn’t just a hottie male body, which seems to have become quite the cliché these days. The synopsis for the story was unique and intriguing. I haven’t come across a lot of romances lately with the cooking/food truck theme, so I liked that it was different. I also haven’t read Rachel Higginson’s writing, and I am always excited to check out a new author. I’m glad that I snagged it up!

The characters in this story were just such characters! Vera and Killian were both ridiculously stubborn and so closed off, but I ended up really adoring them. They were so independent, hard headed, and focused on their success. Although they had an initial attraction to each other, they were both too competitive to let feelings get into the mix and jeopardize their careers in any way. Then there was the salt... My goodness, the salt! The foodie banter between these two was so fun to follow, as they battled each other with their witty and dry humor over their businesses. Honestly, I had no idea how they would ever mesh together in a romantic way.

I definitely recommend this light hearted, fun, and sweet romance! It was a very enjoyable read, and Rachel Higginson did a great job in writing this! The story really pulled me in and actually made me wish that I could cook. I totally want a food truck now!

After bad luck and bad experiences, Vera Delane gave up her dreams of being a gourmet chef and is opening a food truck. Although not ideal, it's a new start with potential and still allows Vera the autonomy of what she loves, which is cooking. Across the street is the sort of restaurant that Vera wishes she could get her foot in the door to, lead by renowned chef Killian Quinn, who hasn't taken too kindly to the presence of the new kid on the block.

Vera is the sort of girl who has a lot of determination and fortitude, but also feels insecure and inadequate after a past relationship that broke down her confidence. In the culinary world, it's crucial to stand by one's creations and to take criticism and that's exactly what Killian brings into her life. Vera is not so welcoming of his unsolicited opinions. Killian embodies everything she wants to avoid - egotistical, demanding and flawlessly skilled.

I loved this book. Vera was so down to earth and relatable, but yet this girl is seriously talented. And Killian, who rubbed Vera the wrong way initially because he's got a tendency to be abrasive and brusque, but really, he's pushing her to be better and to challenge herself. And when Killian actually cares about someone, there is no boundary to his loyalty and concern. Not to mention that he's not one to flatter others so when he pays a compliment, the words are wrapped in gold. Underneath that hard exterior is an incredible guy that I couldn't help but melt over. The dialogue and chemistry was fantastic. I also loved all of the side characters, too. Not to mention that this book inspires me to want to have more food experiences rather than meager meals. I'm already excited for more in the next book with 2 other characters who were introduced in this story.

When you start a book and you continue reading it until the end although you don’t want to finish, then you know you have found a gem! This story has the perfect flavors, the spice and the sweetness of the best love journey!
Vera has been through a lot of hurt. She’d let herself be abused, mistreated and stripped from her confidence. A man had promised her love but gave her pain instead. He destroyed her hopes and dreams to become a famous chef. When she gets back to be close to her family, she decides to start over with a more humble dream, opening a food truck. Her new purpose is great cooking and no men…If only the extraordinaire chef Killian Quinn wouldn’t provoke her skills and her heart. Killian is rude, intrusive and insensitive and he keeps giving his opinion. He is confident when she is insecure and she just can’t stand him!
As the days pass, she understands that he is nothing like she expected him to be. He is charming and thoughtful. He is irresistible although she tries her best to resist him. He gives her lessons in cooking but without demeaning her and stripping of her dignity. He gives her faith by his gentle advice and he doesn’t think she is weak or pathetic. He is cool, masculine and strong. He is arrogant and demanding but not mean. He is selfless and honest. He cultivates her confidence giving her back her lost self-worth.
They might start as opposites but their relationship builds slowly and steadily and in the end, Vera can trust him. I loved their banter in the beginning but I loved more their growing bond. There is friendship and you can see the mutual admiration. This is a slow burn romance and although their sexy times come later and are only a few, their relationship is not lacking.
I admired how much Vera grew her confidence and got over her past. She has the best family and best friend and she is such a sweet girl. Killian is the best male hero. He has a rough childhood but he has become successful. He might be sure about his skills but he helps Vera and motivates her. You can see that he has distinguished her raw talent and he gives her the perfect tools to be better. He is intense but soft to her.
The background of their profession as chefs is so interesting and all these yummy dishes made me crave more their story. Sometimes, Vera’s inter dialogue is a little repetitive but it is not something that blocks the fantastic flowing of this book.
The supporting characters are all intriguing and I cannot wait for the next staldalone in this beautiful world!
A pinch of banter, a dash of friendship, a sprinkle of passion creates the best love recipe! You can have a taste of this book and prepared to be full of hope!

The cover of The Opposite of You was definitely the first thing to catch my eye. Then add in the title and I will say I was definitely intrigued to find out more about this book. Although as soon as I saw that this one was written by Rachel Higginson, the decision was made, I was reading this one, even before I read the synopsis. I first fell in love with this author’s writing upon reading The Five Stages of Falling in Love. That book was so beautifully written and still today that book has a piece of my heart. I have also read and loved Every Wrong Reason, which was another emotional beautifully written story. So going into this one, I was very interested in seeing how well I would enjoy a more fun and flirty book written by the author.

Vera Delane is back home due to her father’s illness and starting over after spending a year in Europe. She has already given up her dreams of one day being the Head chef of her very own kitchen in a very big name restaurant and instead has settled for being the head as well as the only chef in her very own Food truck, Foodie, serving gourmet comfort food. Thanks to her brother she is able to set up Foodie in the parking lot of his bike store but it also puts her directly across the street from a very high end popular restaurant, Lilou, run by the well known chef, Killian Quinn. Killian is not happy about her setting up right across from his restaurant and each weekend he proceeds to find a way to get an order of her food and then sends her his critique of it. These two consider themselves to be complete opposites, but as they get to know each other they begin to see that are really not that different and might be exactly what the other needs.

The Opposite of You is completely written from Vera’s POV and I must say this is the first single 1st person POV book I have read in a long while. I have to say it was a really nice change to get that. I do really enjoy getting the dual POV but with Killian being the broody and a bit mysterious type, not letting many in to see the real Killian, I found by getting only Vera’s POV, it left that element of mystery to the story of never knowing what really was going on in Killian’s head, how he truly felt towards her and what he was planning next.

I really loved both of these characters. Both Vera and Killian were very head strong and stubborn. But both also had their insecurities and I loved that as the story progressed we got to see both sides of these characters. I loved the dynamic the author built between Killan and Vera. In the beginning, these two were complete enemies and seemed to be at war with each other. But as time passed, we truly got some great banter happening. There were so many times I found myself smiling and giddy, chuckling to myself over the face to face banter and even the back and forth notes banter happening between them. I love how even early on, you could feel that sexual tension even when there as that bit of hatred between them. And I loved the slow build between these two, watching both slowly let down their guard and walls with each other. And although it wasn’t until later in the book that these two come together , the story never felt drawn out or fell flat.

I absolutely loved Killian’s character. He did in the beginning come across a rough and gruff broody Idiot that was out to make Vera’s life miserable but as time passed, you could truly see that he wasn’t an Idiot at all. You could see the respect he had for Vera and her cooking and that even though he kept sending her his critique of her food, he was doing in only to help make her better.

The Opposite of You was such a fabulous fun and flirty Frienemies type of read that I couldn’t put down and thoroughly enjoyed. It did have a bit of a serious side at times when it came to both Killian’s and Vera’s past but the author turned those moments into such tender moments between these characters and it really added to the story but at the same time didn’t take away from the fun and flirty read. I loved that this book was more about the build-up of their relationship as well as the sexual attraction between these two and wasn’t filled with tons of sex. Yes there is some pretty hot and sexy scenes but the thing I love about this author’s writing, is there is more story to her books with just the right amount of sexy parts to make it perfect. This is the third book I have read by this author and the third book I have loved by her, she is definitely now being added to my automatic one click list.

As readers and reviewers, we strive to get to that book that’s going to make us fall in love with these unattainable characters and keep us so intrigued, we forgo everything that will be a disturbance to our reading time. So when I was introduced to two characters that made me want to stay in their world just a little bit longer, I knew this was going to be the perfect read for me and I’m glad I took a chance on this story.

“You’re all mystery, Vera. Half-truths and bold statements, but you hide everything about you.

Vera has been through her fair share of heartbreak to last a lifetime. Deciding to start over, she’s now back in her home town gearing up for her new venture. Becoming a Chef has always been a dream of hers but one decision drew that dream to a screeching halt. So how do you move on from something like that ? You start your own business of course and make it in the form of a food truck. If that’s not the best idea you’ve ever heard, you’re obviously not normal.

They say opposites attract and that statement has never been more true especially when Vera meets the famous world renowned Chef and stubborn extraordinaire Killian Quinn. Swearing off men completely, Vera has made it her mission to avoid the opposite sex and focus on her business entirely. But when you have a tattooed up bearded Chef that knows he’s the stuff, you know you’re going to be in some DEEP trouble.

Will these two be able to survive their own business without killing each other?

“I hate you almost as much as I hate salt.”

His lips twitched with an almost smile.

“You don’t hate salt.” He stepped closer. “And you really don’t hate me.”

I absolutely loved Killian and Vera’s dynamic together. These two brought out the best in each other and it showed through their work in the kitchen. They were inspired by each other’s creations, their chemistry was undeniable, and their banter was down right hilarious. Seeing that side of Killian was one of the highlights for me and I secretly wished that we could’ve gotten more of that from him and his POV. He was the epitome of a bad a**in the kitchen and I reveled in his softer side when it came to Vera.

Now my favorite thing about this story was by far the setting. I loved seeing Killian and Vera come up with their own signature dishes and how they developed a friendship first before anything else. Killian was very patient when it came to giving Vera the space that she needed and I liked the fact that he always encouraged her. If you’re looking for a completely different story that’s going to inspire you and make you dream big, Killian and Vera’s story is for you.

This book had me hooked from the beginning. The main character Vera Delane is introduced as a woman who has had a hardship she doesn’t want to reveal at first. But as the story goes on she starts to reveal a little more and more of her story and what happened to her. The author keeps the reader wanting more. We want to know her story and as more is revealed we start to gain a connection to the main character and root for her happiness. We also fall in love with the characters in her life, new and old. I don’t want to give too much away because the journey from the beginning to the end is part of the fun. If you are a true believer in starting over and being in control of your own happiness this is the story for you
Another thing I enjoyed about this book is I got to see a world I didn’t know much about: the culinary world. The main character is a young woman who has the talent to be an amazing chef but because she of past decisions is starting over in her home town running a food truck. I am not a chef. But I enjoyed seeing the cooking world and what the cooks go through and how hard they work to please us, the judges of their food. It has caused me to start seeing restaurant food in a new light.
This is also a love story. Vera is running away from romance because of past decisions but romance is seeking her out. Again, I don’t want to give anything away. The reader will have to find out and enjoy the suspense.
This book is book one in a new series. The next book is due to be out in July 2017. I am counting down the days. This author has created a new fan. And I am excited to read more from her and introduce others to her work.
I highly recommend this book to romance fans, culinary world fans or just any one who enjoys a good story showing the possibility that happiness is always an option.

This is my first book from Rachel Higginson, and I have to say as far as first impressions go, it was as good as it gets! I didn't have any expectations from this book, I thought the cover was cool, and the blurb caught my attention. I'm a sucker for enemies to lovers and hate to love stories, so this was right up my alley! So I started reading, and honestly I thought the beginning was a little slow... to heavy on inner monologue that's why I give it 4.5 Stars). But past the first chapter, when the MCs meet, and start interacting, I couldn't put it down! It was really fun to read!!
I love a feisty h and Vera is just that. She's a girl trying to get over a very bad relationship, and trying to figure out how to put her life back together. She's brave, smart, independent and even though she has moments of self doubt, she pushes through digging deep to find her self confidence.
Killian Quinn is the very definition of an alpha male. Self assured, over confident, a little arrogant (at least at first), and he says exactly what he thinks with no regards of hurt feelings. I loved him!
So when Vera and Killian meet its like fireworks, and not the good kind. Killian thinks he can intimate Vera, but Vera won't take any s**t from him. Their banter, ego punching and subtle insults kept a smile on my face. Naturally as the story progresses, their feelings start to change and it is truly a pleasure to read how their relationship blossoms into love.
I really recommend this book if you like fun, opposites attract type of stories. I can't wait for the next book in the series, Ezra and Molly's story.

Five Amazing Stars

I was so absolutely thrilled I receive this first book from the most wonderful series, Opposites Attract. With this most outstanding romantic tale. I thoroughly enjoyed this most amazing book too!!

As these two closest friends, Vera Delane and Molly Maverick. Poor Vera was fed up with the opposite sex. She had sadly broken up with such an awful man now and had enough of men all together. Luckily she alway knew that she was never alone. With Molly helping her out to for Vera to finally make her greatest venture of her life. To be become a Chef. Both of them could start their first and own business too. It had surely been a great dream for these two friends.

The only problem the girls faced now their Food truck business was located directly across the road from another top restaurant. With food served right from the most famous chef, Kellian Quinn. Now this will be the troubles for poor Vera. He was just gorgeous. And powerful man himself. What was she going to do now.

I loved this sensational book. It was such a delightful hilarious romance. Such a most beautiful sweet book. I was surely a complete winner to me too!

* I recommend this book to everyone!!
* I'm now just so happy to read the second book too!!

BOOK REVIEW
Title: "The Opposite of You"
Author: Rachel Higginson
Rating: 4.5
Usually I'm not a big fan of cooking-related books as they tend to get really technical about types of foods, food-prep, etc. And while this book had those elements, the quirky sarcasm and heartfelt moments won me over. After getting out of a very bad relationship, Vera escapes to Europe for a year honing her chef skills while trekking cross-continent. However, this was more about survival and finding herself again. She comes back home when her father is diagnosed with cancer, and she needs a Plan B since her dream of having her own kitchen was forced away from her. She decides to open a food truck that caters to the after-bar crowd (seriously, this is GENIUS! Wish this was around when I was in college LOL!) But here's the kicker... she parks her food truck in the parking lot of her brother's bike shop, directly across the street from famed chef Killian Quinn's restaurant. OMG, the frenemy setup between Killian and Vera was GOLDEN! I laughed at their underhanded antics ("I hate you almost as much as I hate salt") and sighed a little when they actually started helping each other. And oh-my-stars... after the slow burn when Killian finally made his move with Vera, my heart squeezed! Vera's brother, Vann, and BFF, Molly, added so much fun to this book. The final send-off in Foodie was simply adorable.

Holy sexual tension..and OMG the description of the food...I swear my stomach was yearning as much as my heart was aching for these two crazy kids to get together. Don't read this book while low carbing..it could tear it all apart. lol

I fell hard for Vera from the start..she was trying to overcome bad decisions and right all the wrongs she had made. She fell for the wrong man and paid the price. So she came home, got a plan and went to work..right across the street from the hottest competition she had ever seen.

"I was the exact opposite of him. He was sure and stable, where I was fickle and shaky. He was confident when I was only insecure. Strong where I was only ever weak."

Right from the first look the sexual tension between Vera and Killian was ON. They were both strong willed, eager, broken in ways they didn't even realize, and connected. From the first critique to the final page the attraction was apparent, felt through the kindle and I couldn't help wanting more. A dash of salt, a bad yelp, all of it led to finding their way to each other...Right parking lot..right time!

Great read. One stubborn woman determined to start her life over as a chef and one stubborn chef at a high class restaurant, who's ticked because her food truck is parked across from his restaurant.
He torments the hell out of her, criticizing her food, the truck , it's endless.
Vera returns to Durham after a year in Europe traveling and cooking. She's escaped an abusive relationship that no one really no the details of. She's home looking after her Dad who has been diagnosed with bladder cancer. Her brother owns a cycle shop, the parking lot is where Vera parks her truck. Her food truck is upscale food truck food. She's invested in the business and making a go of it.
It's her chance to do over.
When Killian starts expressing an interest in Vera, her alarm bells go off, oh don't get me wrong, he still manages to bust her chops. He's truly interested and caring. I really liked him, even when he was a jerk. Unpredictably the ex shows back up and is as aggressive as ever, Killian sends him packing and Vera has to finally tell Killian the whole story. Things heat up between these two and while the steamy scenes were scant they were hot. I can just picture Killian and his beard.
This is a great story. I can't wait for book two. Ezra and Molly? I was so hoping for Molly and Wyatt.
Read this, you'll love it.

I read this through Kindle Unlimited and then there was a 99¢ sale, which I passed up, and now I'm going to have to pay full price because I have to own this book.

Vera is smart and broken and works really hard at fixing herself. She attributes some of her fixing at the end to Killian, but in truth she had gathered up all the pieces and used her own courage and strengths to glue herself back together.

Some reviewers have suggested the book is less for not having Killian's point of view, but the book works just fine as is. In fact, if we'd heard his voice earlier, the scene in his home kitchen would not have required him to say what he did, and we wouldn't have fallen so very hard for the "us"ness of them.

It's clever, characters are consistent, supporting cast are interesting and engaging. I will read more of this author's work.

If you like this author, you'll love Penny Reid's Beard Brothers (Wilson Brothers) and Knitting in the City series. Read them in order, but switch over to knitting in the city before reading Beauty and the Mustache. Carry on from there.

**********4.5 Star Review*********

Rachel Higginson is fast becoming one of my favorite authors and The Opposite of You proves that Rachel is a true talent.

While, the book tackles the after affects of a controlling and abusive relationship it is not a book about an abused women, but a book about hope, love and healing from your past. Vera is portrayed as a women that is not a victim of her abuser but an overcomer. Someone who is still fighting, finding out who she is and learning to live again.

I was smiling the whole time I was reading this book. Vera fighting spirit and Killian arrogance made for some fun and witty banter that made the book an enjoyable read. These two are so perfect for each other if they could just get out of each others way.

And can I say that I just loved Killian, he was the perfect foil for Vera. Killian helped Vera break out of her shell and to push her to be all that she was meant to be. Killian was not afraid of Vera's talent but embraced it and let her talent push him to be better person and chef.

The opposite of you takes readers on a journey of hope, love and healing. It shows us that we are not bound to our past and that our past does not have to define or control our future.

Killian (which is just an odd name) and Vera (which was name of our chicken so that was odd) were a fun match. Both are amazing Chefs - he in a five star restaurant, she in a food truck. They butt heads over food and location but eventually realize they're deep attraction and romance happens. Vera had some man troubles in her past that drove her to run away to Europe for a year - we're reminded of this several, several, several times throughout the story. Killian is a great character, maybe since this story is told first person from Vera's point of view, we never really get to see his flaws. Let me say, I liked this story, I didn't LOVE this story but it was a sweet romance. FYI - if you're looking for steamy love scenes, look elsewhere.

This was my first book by Rachel Higginson, and I am not disappointed. The Opposite of You was such a sweet and truly thoughtful read. Vera carries around the scars from her past relationship that was both emotionally and physically abusive. After escaping to Europe for a year, she returns home to help with her sick father and to start a new life for herself. Vera decides to open up a food truck, Foodie, across from the upscale restaurant, Lilou, run by the famously arrogant chef, Killian Quinn. Vera is met with Killian's unsolicited reviews and advice on her menu. Even though Vera can't stand Killian's cocky attitude, she finds herself waiting for his nightly visits. She is not ready for a relationship and has sworn off men, but soon realizes that Killian is everything her ex is not. Behind his arrogance and beard, Killian has a kind heart and proves himself to be trustworthy, devoted and loyal. Both Killian and Vera support one another, pushing each other to be better people and better chefs. The story was slow to start, but I loved how the author showed how Vera survived her past relationship and learned to believe in herself.

Killian Quinn...you just read the name of your newest book boyfriend. He's cocky, egotistical, demanding, intense, and look at that beard on the cover. Oh and he can cook, like change your life kind of food experience.

Loved this story. An enemies to friends to lovers story that revolves around food because the main characters are chefs (loved this profession choice.) Vera has been hurt and not just the bad breakup kind of hurt. She's sworn off men and is looking to pick up the shattered pieces of her dreams by running her own food truck. Killian is the chef across the street at Lilou, the 5 star restaurant that reminds Vera of her lost dreams. I thought the first few chapters were a little slow because Vera was in her head too much but once the two started interacting it was game on. Throw in some quirky side characters in Wyatt, the sous chef, and Vann and Molly, Vera's brother and best friend and you have a flirty and funny story blossoming with all the feels. Vera's dad's storyline rounded it out with an emotional punch. I enjoy Rachel's writing and stories and this was definitely a winner for me.

Vera's life is in pieces.

She has been blackballed. She has given up on her heart's desire. Never mind the mountain of student loan debt and the fact that she has to make it. HAS. TO. MAKE. IT.
But, with little savings and an ailing father to care for - can she do it?

She no longer trusts herself or her abilities. She knows she must rebuild her life and take control. She tells herself that this is the only way. It is her only option.

Enter Killian. He IS the know-it-all. He is the master - opinionated, confident, and utterly maddening.

Can Vera pull it together and make it, or will Killian be just who he is supposed to be?

Let me be clear - Rachel Higginson is the master. Her ability to weave a story that sucks you in is unbelievable. She is entrancing, addicting, and amazing. Her characters will make your heart break and soar. You will connect to the story line no matter you circumstances. You will laugh (sometimes too loudly and inappropriately - which will make your family wonder about you sanity), you will connect to Vera's plight, and want to throw parsley. You will read her books over and over again.

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS - Running away to Europe to escape her violent ex was the best thing Vera ever did, until her father takes a turn for the worst & she has to return home. She has the crazy idea of setting up a food truck in her brother's parking lot right across from a world famous restaurant run by hot bearded snooty chef Killian. Vera plans to offer late-night gourmet comfort food which certainly won't compete with Killian's ultimate fancy dining experience. But sure enough Killian hears word of how excellent Vera's food is & he starts to snoop & send her critiques on her cooking! How dare he! Her ex made her feel like a complete cowering doormat but not Killian - she stands toe to toe with this famous chef & they duke it out, adding to the sparks of sexual chemistry they already feel for each other. Killian turns very sweet & protective over Vera & they find when they cook together they create something spectacular, exactly what Vera needs to boost her self-esteem. Great story, excellent chemistry, unique writing! Not enough sexual details for my tastes but definitely an awesome book!

First, I have never laughed this hard while reading a book...ever. It was hysterical!!! Under that, the characters were so sincere and honest. Despite Veras past, she's still come out strong. Her banter with her arch nemesis takes her confidence to an entire new level. I loved to see the unraveling of a dark past coincide so beautifully with the formation of a new friendship. The authenticity was the most rewarding aspect of this story because laughter is always the best healer. Keeping Killian from ever being POV was a bold move that paid off, and the secondary characters were stars. The food....the atmosphere....the descriptions....all breathtaking..I have nothing negative to say about this book.

This was a frenemies slow burn - which of course is all the rage and I’m definitely approving of the trend. And this was what I loved most about the book - the funny sarcastic banter between Vera and Killian for the first half of the book. He critiqued her in such a way that it motivated her to do better - which was saying something since she wasn’t fully recovered from the ego blow her abusive ex had dealt her. He has his staff covertly buy food from her, then sends notes critiquing it - it was hysterically adorable.

Where the book fell for me, was that once this tension was over, I didn’t get a lot of chemistry out of the two any more. When Killian finds out about her past, the bubble pops, and Vera just stops fighting the attraction. There wasn’t enough development of their romantic relationship at an emotional level for me after that. In fact, there wasn’t enough heat after that for me either. I love a slow-burn but I want pay-off for my wait.

*****KFA REVIEWER*****

I thoroughly enjoyed and loved this book. The story was something out a chef/food fairytale. The storyline was unique and intriguing. The characters were charming and refreshing.

Vera Delane is chasing her dream, to be the best chef, to be known, to own her own kitchen. She's at a little intermission with her dream and runs a food truck called "Foodies" she attracts the bar crowd. Which is genius!

What she doesn't expect is to be across the street from a restaurant, and the chef that cooks there: Killian Quinn..and let me tell you... He's every woman's wet dream: sexy, tattoos, beard, and he can cook??? Swoon?

The banter between them was sweet and funny. I loved these two, especially his notes he would send.

This is a great read. Thank you Rachel Higginson for bringing something so delicious to my kindle.

This story blurb caught my eye; it's unique background - dueling chefs... But you can't write an opposites attract story without the dueling points of view. Vera was good, I'll admit that when in dialogue with Killian or Molly, I actually laughed out loud. However, that dialogue was few and far between. I was exhausted being in her head. We were told that Killian had major character growth but never shown it. This could have been an incredibly strong story with his voice. Without it he and everyone else just seemed like plot devices.

I couldn't tell if this was a story about a romance or how to survive trauma. It tried to do both and it was not convincing.

The world of chefs and haute cuisine makes this an unusual story that has been good so far. I like the evolving romance, although the h is so bitchy at times, despite the H' s nice overtures. The food sounds great and has me digging out things to snack on as I read. Not good. I hope it continues this interesting and doesn't porn it up as they grow closer.

Well, sadly, the author did choose to throw in some graphic crap about 3/4 of the way through, but it added nothing good. The romance is doing nicely without it. Plots seem so juvenile and sleazy when the reader has to become a voyeur to validate the romance with a play by play.
Otherwise, good drama and pacing.
I liked the ending as well, and intend to read the next in the series.

This cute romance book was so worth reading. The animosity between Killian and Vera slowly builds into lust/love. Vera had no confidence in men after several years of emotional/physical abuse from a previous boyfriend. But Killian taught her that he could be trusted and showed her love. Through several ups and downs love conquered and they became a happy couple. This was a new to me author but after reading this book, I have ordered the second in the series and plan on reading all the following books in this series. I enjoyed this authors work and recommend her books.

I have eagerly awaited Rachel's first new book in ages, and she didn't disappoint me at all. I've always loved her writing but had forgotten just how much. She draws you in right from the beginning with her complex but relatable characters, her fab storylines and the different twists and turns she adds to all her books.

In The Opposite of You, Vera Delane is looking for a fresh start. With the help of her bestie and brother she opens up Foodie, a late-night food truck with flair. But there's a hitch - Killian Quinn, local celeb chef, attitude extraordinaire and a bit of a hotty to boot!

Cue a heated competition, fuelled by an underlying attraction.

Fab story, great cover (Well done Mr H!) and the usual chills I get when reading a Rachel's books. Another winner!

So many authors get formulaic after a few successes and after a while, I lose interest, because it just feels like I've read the story before. That is NOT the case with Rachel Higginson! OH. MY. GOSH. It honestly feels like you're a fly on the wall (or in the kitchen) with these characters. The slow build up to their meeting and eventual connection, the well-crafted back story, all of it is addicting and compelling. I just loved the game of cat & mouse, the sly humor shown with a deft hand, and the perfectly crafted conversations. It's easy to lose yourself in this book, and I did! I found myself at 1 am unable to put it down! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story, a well-written story, and characters who stick with you even after you've finally closed the last page.

What a great read! This book follows Vera and Killian. Vera has just purchased a food truck after spending a year in Europe trying to escape an abusive relationship. Killian is the famed chef at the restaurant across the street from where Vera parks her truck. These two get off to a rocky start but push each other to be better chefs and better people from the start. Vera's best friend Molly and her brother Vann are great supporting characters and we will see more of Molly in the next book of the series. I really enjoyed this book. The characters were developed, the story of abuse was handled in a realistic way, and seeing them reach their HEA was worth staying up late for.

Best romance I've ever read with my kindle unlimited subscription. Most of the free romance books on kindle unlimited are poorly written with tons of grammatical errors, no character development, cliche storylines, and dialogue that is just plain embarrassing. Not so with this book. Higginson's characters are well thought out. The storyline flows naturally. This author wrote a complete novel with forethought and skill. I don't particularly care for the narrator addressing the audience, but that's a personal preference and may not be an issue for other readers. As for the actual story, it was cute and sexy. Perfect escapism.

Simply fantastic; romance at its best. Lovely pacing and great chemistry and tension. I loved how Vera had to address her demons gradually and that there wasn't an instant fix to her problems. A very plausible gradual development of love but lots of yummy attraction and desire. Speaking of yummy...the author's descriptions of food were on point and everything sounded scrumptious. I really couldn't get enough of this book, and I'm excited to read the next in the series. Well done! Michelin star for books. ;)

Killian knows how to make an impression. He is intimidating and straight to the point.

Vera is looking to regain herself, putting everything she has into her new future.

We get an intense connection, simmering with anger, frustration, and desire. There were many times I had equal parts of love and hate for Killian.

We also get a band of characters in The Opposite of you. I would love for any one of them to get their own book.

I couldn’t wait to start The Difference Between Us.

*Read through Kindle Unlimited.

Rachel Higginson is a very talented writer, her new adult romances drew me in , then i was sucked into her rom-zom-apocalypse stories, then i found her mystical series. This new work by her was such fun to read, a witty, contemporary romance, with a female lead i can totally relate to, who wants the same again and again when there is something new and exciting out there. The story sucked me in and everytime i put the book down i was kind of disappointed, as i just wanted to keep reading. I urge you o go try this authors work, and this new series is the ideal place to start. Also i have to say i love the cover.

This was a really different story from anything else I have read!! Vera is running a food truck that is parked near Killian's famous and upscale restaurant. He is not happy about that at all. Not only is Killian a pompous jerk, but he has the nerve to eat Vera's food and critique it, as if she wanted his input!

What starts off as a hate relationship turns into more over their shared love of food, cooking and each other.

This was a great read from one of my favorite authors, Rachel Higginson. I can't want for more books in this series!!!
