This book was incredible. Different from others I read. I love the haunted house who speaks and acts. That’s just hilarious. And yes I was suckered and bought into Volvaks purchases, body guards, and special gift to deem her trust, and I was equally blindsided by his evil side. Cant wait to learn the hundreds of secrets Maud kept hidden.

When I first started reading this, I was confused. I felt like I was missing some of the story. But as I kept reading, I realized that was the intention. As tidbits were revealed, it left me wondering who (which characters) to trust. I was so enthralled by the story. It is a different take on Necromancy, and I like that. I don't usually do reviews, but this story is so compelling. This world that Hailey, has created leaves me wanting more. You jump right into, Grier's( our heroine) life. This story has action, mystery, humor, and a slow burn romance. I highly recommend reading, you will not want to put it down!

From the very beginning a soft spot in my heart is formed for Grier. and her haunted house she lovingly calls Wolly. The author is able to create an unbreakable bond between the two without it seeming forced for the sake of the story. I have never read a book where I love a character that isnt;t an actual character but a house, that being said I wish I had a Wolly of my own to call home.

Spent half of the book trying to determine if I was missing something. The mystery kept me interested, because it honestly read more like a follow-up than an introductory novel in a serious. I enjoyed some of these characters, but I'm unsure if my curiosity regarding their fates is enough to propel me towards book two.

It took a cool minute to get into this book, but it was worth it. I think the hardest part was trying to figure out what exactly was going on at first, but questions slowly start getting answered and when they do you realize how complex the author has made this storyline. Definitely going to read the next book in this series

The girl needs to be seeing a therapist, but I suppose Odette serves that function for her. Funny how Dame Lawson was able to reinstate her but they couldn't be bothered to set her up with a tiny bit of cash flow prior to the announcement? She was far too wretched and on edge.

I wonder if we're going to see more of Cruz in the future.

This was a smart & clever book. Loved the take on necromancy & vampires. Very much licked the h but only if she steps up in book 2. This first book was all about her early beat down & survival so we did see glimpses of who she could be. If the author lets her become someone who is strong & smart as we are lead to believe this will be a series I can become immeshed in. Looking forward to next book.

Ms. Edwards new series is a fascinating world with necromancers and and vampires. Grier incarcerated for murdering her mentor with no trial was suddenly released back in to the world broke and broken. With the help of her childhood friends she she finds work and lives in her haunted mentors home. The house is protective I really liked that. Looking forward to book two!

Or, you could say I am an ardent fan! Hailey Edwards has a freshness, a style, such a freaking strong voice that I feel a swoon coming on every time I realize there are 7 more books for me to read. She writes dialogue that flows like a good stiff breeze and she paints worlds with a magic hand.
This new series is about necromancy- although the plot didn't touch on that too much yet- and magic and vampires.
I've read 2 books so far, falling in hot damness! at the 15th page, and there is one thing Hailey does that has made me hers....... She doesn't bore you with a backstory that is stuffed down your throat. She states. She drops grenades. She has the story move along, talking to us like we know what's what. Sometimes someone else doesn't know this or that, so we see small explanations or apologies or pieces of desolation. But we begin to piece things together because the story is seamless. The story brings you in and informs you as we are all walking at a clip down the proverbial hall. Smooth. Talented. Creative. Hailey Edwards sits on my shelf right next to Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Faith Hunter, Kelley Armstrong, Darynda Jones, Meghan Ciana Droidge, Eileen Wilks.......
One peeve, HE titles her books before she writes them! I spent half an hour trying to find the rest of the series for this and Bayou Born. They are still in that brain I'm going to stalk. So, next I will start a series that she has completed, and I invite you to discover a fantastic urban/ paranormal author with me.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I wasn’t sure what to expect considering the title. The book wasn’t at all what I bought it would be. The characters were surprising and the story was easy to follow. I like the setting. I am going to immediately read the next book. I can’t wait to see where the characters go next.

Good start to the series. A little slow in the beginning but it picked up about half way through and got interesting. Not much wrapped up by the end but it left a nice little trail of mysteries that left me wanting to start the next book so I would recommend it.

Wow! I've read Hailey Edwards' books for a years--going back to the Araneae Nation-- and have enjoyed them, but this series is stellar!!! As in "I didn't want to put this down" kind of stellar. I've already devoured the next book in the series and am waiting for the third.

I love the story. I felt a little lost at first and had to keep checking to see if I was actually reading the first book of the series. Once I got going, I enjoyed it so much I have read the first 3 books in 3 days! I can't wait until Sept when the next installment comes out.

I wasn’t planning on reading an urban fantasy today, but hang it all, I was hooked from word one. This book has all the elements of a great UF and I am definitely reading the next one today. Immediately. Like, right now.

The beginning of this book feels a little disjointed but still intriguing. It takes awhile to understand the scope of horror the main character survived and how damaged she is. It draws you in and you want to know more.

I really enjoyed this read. Not crazy about the love interest but hoping his personality will be redeemed. Creativity to the world building and fun characters. I’m a sucker for a heroine who has a rough past and Grier nails that.

I really like Hailey Edwards writing. Her books always have enough of story that you want to know more. Has all the elements love, friendship, action and in the right amount as well. Her books while might have romance they are not the focus but develop nicely with the stories.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this story! An engaging heroine, Grier Woolworth, has a lot of issues to work through and you want to be there for her. Can't wait for the next chapter in her story, so please don't let us wait too long for it to be released! Thank you.

It was good, a great undertone of humor. I think it needed a little bit of editing for run-on sentences and for stuff that was repeated a lot. It was unique and the characters were fun. Sometimes I feel like the author switched points of view in the middle of important stuff though which made some things confusing. All and all I would read more from her.

I liked the main character a lot and I loved the haunt tours she does. I liked several of the side characters as well. I will probably read the next book in the series. The romance wasn't as intense as I'd prefer but it's a fantasy not a romance novel.

I like this book. I like its depiction of the supernatural in the south remaining true to the romance of the region. I like the gentle telling of a brutal story. I look forward to reading more by this author. This book was a surprise in a market full of crap this is a gem.

This story wasn't bad , the plot held my interest and the interaction between the characters are great . But there's just something about it that i stops it from being great!! Maybe it's the juvenile way the heroin thinks... She hasn't got too much intellect from what I can see, maybe it's because of what she's been through maybe her brain hasn't settled yet and she still needs to grow accustomed to being free still ,but the easy way she trust people is hard to reconcile with and the fact that she doesn't seem to really has any fight in her makes it hard to believe and root for her. Something's just off. I will try the second book and see what's happens before i give up because other than the problems i mention for me, the book is well written.

It took a few minutes for me to sort the storyline out at first, but was quickly drawn into the plot. Well drawn characters, well paced...can't wait till the next book is out! Thanks so much for making this a Kindle Unlimited offering.

The heroine is a sympathetic character who has recently been released from a brutal and unjust imprisonment. Now that she is back in her magical home and trying to get on with her life, she is once again threatened by forces beyond her control.

There are fun and interesting parts to this book, plus some nice girly friendships. The romance is a bit undeveloped, but shows promise. It can use some editing and proofreading but it’s worth reading.

My first book by this author and I'm quite impressed. A different spin on the paranormal world, a fascinating, complex heroine and an enjoyably layered mystery will bring me back for the rest of the series.

Am I the only person who read this book and thought wow that was bad? I see all the 5 stars and simply don't understand. The characters are one note and the writing is disorganized. Reading this book made me feel like I was wadding through mud. Boaz, Grier's next door neighbor, and Volkov, a Last Seed vampire, are typical alpha males you see all the time in romance books. Grier, the heroine, is kinda a nit-wit. When she notices some of her wards are down around her house, she doesn't investigate, she goes to work. When a wraith breaks into her house and leaves her a card....she ignores it and goes to clean her house. It's not until later she opens the card. Hey Grier, a wraith just ate your pet bird, and leaves you a card and you do nothing!?! Well at least now she decides to check her wards protecting her house. Surprise! The wards have been destroyed...duh!
Her "relationship" with Boaz seems forced and childish I skipped over those parts. Her "relationship" with Volkov is rather interesting. Why would a Last Seed vampire be interested her....both Grier and I thought the same on that. However, it dawned on me that she has something everyone wants....power. It takes Grier more time to figure that out.
The writing is disorganized. You'll be reading a paragraph that has Grier at work. The next paragraph it's three days later and she's just waking up. I had to reread so many sections to figure out what was going on.
I was really excited about this series, but was disappointed. Thank goodness I didn't pay for this.

First book I have ever read by this author, and by far my favorite series by her, but that being said I have now made it my personal mission to read everything she has written and thus far have not been disappointed.

This was a fun book to read. The characters are well developed, good story too. Not sure how I like the timeline, starting the story after prison felt off at times. But all in all I really enjoyed the book and look forward to the next.

Loved this book. I normally don’t start reading a series unless all books have been released, but gave in with this. I seriously need to keep to my norm, but I loved this book and will read more of the series.

I was looking for a fun paranormal story with a zombie parakeet. Through 50% of the book the parakeet was a throw away character. I gave up on the book when it became clear it was a romance book in a paranormal world. Not the focus I enjoy.

This book is all over the place. You never connect with any of the characters and it seemed to be missing a plot....and the rest of the story. The book is mostly just an answered questions and nothing really seems to happen. It was a very confusing story to read in the end you're just left with "is this all there is?"
