I had just about given up on Science Fiction - until I read this book. It seems like most current Science Fiction is "End of the World" stuff; civilization in ruins, humans wiped out or reduced to slavery, zombies in control - etc., etc., etc. When I was a teenager in the 60's, Science Fiction was about the future - a bright future in most cases - something to look forward to, not fear. A "deep think" book is OK - sometimes - but it's getting hard to find a SF book that is just fun. Thank you, Mr. McFarlane, for bringing back SF reading enjoyment.

There might of been a few things better explained but for the most part it all came together so well. The story is one I wish could be my life in space after turning 21 a few years older now I wonder if we will ever be in space like the stories I read but I hope I get to see it. Back to the book wonderful read wish I had found it earlier now to see about book two

Miracles do happen however not that often. Our hero must have a fairy godmother taking care of him. All that aside this book is t least an entertaining read. Have fun but don’t look all that close for explanations of our hero’s miraculous escapes.

Snookered in by the appealing and very clever title , I found myself propelled into a universe filled with new ideas and societies. I grew up reading R.A. Heinlein, Norton and Asimov under the bed covers with a flashlight until the last bad guy was taken care of and the hero and the Galaxy was safe. Although the flashlight is no longer necessary I did find myself streaking through space with that same old heart pounding, sweat inducing and time swallowing excitement! Well done and Thank you!

Jamie McFarlane has started with a good story, nice character development and a decent grasp of science. The pacing was a bit flat and the story was perhaps a little predictable but the action scenes were nice and the characters relatable. I look forward to more books in the series!

I enyoyed the characters and the story with its heroes and villains, attacks and rescues, with the focus on the good guys. Think of it as an Old West drama in the Asteroid belt with the added elements of the environments of space and low gravity asteroids- cleverly woven.

I have passed by this book many times before taking a chance on this book.
I am amazed at how well the book was written. The story is fluid, fast paced and, an enjoyable read. I could not put the down once I started reading.
One action packed moment after another. After I submit this review, I am going to purchase book 2

I enjoyed the journey. The writing was a little choppy. I had to adjust the scene in my head sometimes but sense this is the first book I have read by this author, I can give some leeway. I look forward to reading ng more.

I rushed out and grabbed the remaining books in the series. Enjoyed them all immensely. Fun uncomplicated space opera with pirates thrown into the mix.

Some of the other review comments criticize whether the two main characters could realistically achieve what they do, I didn't experience this myself, I thought the actions and subsequent consequences were mostly within the realms of plausibility.

Cant wait for book 9.

I loved this book. The only downside was that it wasn't longer. It's got everything a good space opera need: a struggling young protagonist, a broken down ship that is turned into a great trader/corvette, young love, betrayal, privates.....just awesome.

If you liked "Firefly," the Solar Clipper Series by Nathan Lowell, or good old fashion Sci-if, then you should pick this up.

This is an excellent space sci-fi. The characters are easy to invest in, likeable, and you want to see them succeed. Pacing is great, and fun to read. Excellent realistic details on technical points. A great read!

McFarlane's first of this series was entertaining. Liam Hoffen and his friends were people who were really relatable. McFarlane has also given us an understandable view of what it might be like to live and have families in space. Thankfully, nine of his asteroids looked like potatoes. :-)
If you have half a weekend or so to veg with a tome of enjoyable, fun escapism, this is the book (or series?) to choose.

It is almost a YA novel...all that post adolescent angst and pathos. But it is also a pretty good story, although you wonder just how gutsy an 18 year old whose never seen 'action' before would really be in the situations presented. Space Operas are my thing...and I like lots of star ships doing battle, marines kicking alien butt, and a solid basis of fact to the story. These are a bit light on all that.

When a colony is attacked, what should three young inexperienced colonists do? Counter attack or hide?

This is a great story with plenty of room for expansion into other stories in the same universe. Looking forward to reading Fool Me Once as the second book

Great character development with the storyline not all focusing on the main character. Ideas and plans of action are presented to all the cast for tweaking. Great refreshing writing and presentation.

This story is fun, fast paced and filled with humor. I really enjoyed reading this book and the following books up through Smuggler's Dilemma. The fifth book completes the first main story arch and I think the author should have stopped there, but I definitely recommend this series up to that point.

This is a great book for enjoyable reading. No pretension, just a few hours of escapism. At the risk of blasphemy, I would like to compare it to the Robert Heinlein juveniles I still enjoy rereading after sixty years.

I was surprised and delighted by this book. A light easy read, Rookie Privateer provided not only a great story but a memorable "universe" I'm want return to as well. It reminded me of the late great Robert Heinlein space novels, a high compliment in itself. Thank you, Mr McFarlane.

I enjoyed the first book of this series greatly, and immediately purchased the next four books. The youth of the leading characters and their competence conjures comparisons to Heinlein's famous juveniles of the 1950s. The action is strong, and the background is most carefully and believably laid out. Highly recommended!

I really liked the ' Rookie Privateer ' ., thus the five star rating . If you want adventure it's here, if you want shoot-um ups there here, are there good guys and bad yup. I am looking forward to reading the complete series.

The writing often comes across as passive. It often reads more like a log book than as an action oriented account. That being said, the story line is engaging and the characters are interesting. Despite including a too long account of a starship septic system cleanup, the novel accomplishes the goal of being entertaining. I expect the writer will improve with every book and I plan on reading more of his work.

Excellent story, very well written. Love a book that makes me feel like I am there, living the adventure with the characters. Well done Mr. McFarlane! Glad there are more adventures with my book friends Liam, Nick and Marney.

If you enjoy fast paced science fiction this is the first in a new series that has all the goods. Interesting original characters and
snappy dialogue. Good world building without the tiresome wordiness you sometimes have to wade through while the plot develops. Love that it is on kindle unlimited. Looking forward to downloading the next book.

Started off a little slow, but then went along on a fairly good clip. Some portions of the story were not a surprise, but you still had to wait for it all to be unveiled. The characters had some adjusting to do as the story moved along, but they did it in a realistic way and acted pretty normal, no over whining (why me) or overly done sarcastic attitude. Liam and Nick make a good pair and work well together in a mature way.

I gave it four stars only because of some grammar errors...and I was sad it ended so soon, lol. Good characters, dialog, environment setting and depth of story. Action and adventure balanced with story. I enjoyed it :)

I think this author is an alien. The world building is really too believable. I like the characters as well. Even the story is fascinating, with lots of action and human interest. I hope it continues this good, since I'm about 40% in at present.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was exciting and pleasant. I stayed up late finishing it, which is rare. I would say it is PG, which to me is a real pleasure. I can just read and enjoy with little worry that the material would hurt my conscience. Good work Jamie NcFarlane!!

I liked everything about Privateer #1. Perhaps I'm a sucker for 'poor boy makes good' stories, and this is surely one of those. The fact that it combines that genre with the good ol' space opera doubled my fun.

Well, enough with the cliches. The book itself is not a cliche. It takes a novel tack and spins a great tale that kept me reading without stop. I recommend it, and have already purchased #2.
