I watched the movie then decided I really need to know more. This story is amazing! It is written in his own words. The fact that this man could write about all the terrible things done to him and not have a bitter attitude about it really speaks about the value of forgiveness. Forgiveness frees us to live and not be ruled by those who have hurt us. Also the journal entries of Wilm Hosenfeld are extremely interesting. Very worthwhile reading!

Karma(luck, destiny, lady fortuna) plays a huge roll in all of our lives, but usually not to the extent that it did in Szpilman's case. For all its brutal tragedy, such horror often brings about the best and noblest in people. Moving and well written. Humans……..

I almost missed this book because I had already seen the movie. The movie does follow the book pretty well but you miss a lot of captivating stories in the movie. I read this book in three days and I loved it. Eye opening and well worth the read.

I liked this purchase because it didn't only come with Szpilman's memoir. It also came with excerpts from Captain Wilm Hosenfeld's diary which, I thought, was a gold mine. Something else that I liked about this memoir that the movie based off of it did not succeed at (in my opinion) was that it highlighted the psychological torture that the Germans put the Jews through in the Holocaust.

Excellent excellent. Better than the movie. Not just about a life during WWII, he made the whole era come alive. Very well written. Most stories of WWII are written decades after the fact. This was written immediately afterwards. Highly recommend for history.

This testimonial to the potential of mankind later made into a beautiful film is next to unbelievable. We need to remember the potential in all of us, all the while praying we are never tested to this degree.

This is the unbelievable true story of Wladyslaw Szpilman, who lived in Poland during the Nazi occupation and subsequent annihilation of its Jewish population. His survival amidst incredible brutality and cruelty is an astounding story, told with the objectivity and impassiveness of one determined to survive. I could not put this book down, and was very moved by this story of one man's determination to live amidst Nazi murder and mayhem. It illustrates the horrors of war, hatred and racism vividly, and has an uplifting ending. This is a book not to be missed, a classic for all time.

I highly recommend "The Pianist." Szpilman's account of how he survived in the Warsaw ghetto is an amazing story of resilience. Tucked within the book is a surprising turn of events involving a German soldier who was not as he appeared to be.

This story is absolutely amazing. I can understand why a movie was made based on this book. It was heartbreaking, exciting, moving and would seem unbelievable if it wasn't a true story. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I have been recommending it to everyone I know.

like reading biographical daily notes. starkly realistic and presents much about wwII Poland I never realized and that I found startling, such as the continued night life he describes that existed in tandim with the violence hunger and squalor of early Nazi occupation. nothing glamorized here, dark but passionate. I found myself empathizjng but In a different way than I expected before the read.

I wad impressed with how this gentleman endured so much and came away with such a positive outlook. After having seen the movie I liked reading the story from the true source and finding how much the movie followed the actual story.

I HAVE REFUSED TO READ STORIES ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST 1939 - 1945, after being forced to read The Story of Anne Frank. However this book was recommended by a book club and so I read it. And you should too. WE MUST NEVER FORGET!

An incredible book. And despite the horrendous experiences endured and the terrible human behaviour it still comes across as uplifting and a triump of the human spirit. I watched the movie when it was first released and loved it. The book is equally as good and incredibly moving.

The movie is very dramatic and Adrian Brody is excellent. I immediately ordered the book written by the man who is the central figure in the movie and through whom I discovered some of the most horrible events of the German soldiers.
