This is the third novel in the action series Sniper Elite featuring Gil Shannon, a Seal Team sniper. In the same vein as the first two books military action and plenty of it are the order of the day. Gil is sent to kill a Russian military sniper known as the Wolf who has spread havoc all across Europe and in the course of events has turned Chechen terrorist. The mission appears to be right on until Gil realizes that he has been exposed by someone high up in the U.S. government. In order to even the odds now stacked against him he teams up with a deadly Russian special operative. When Gil and his team discover that the Wolf is just the tip of the iceberg and what he is up against is a full blown plot to destroy the U. S economy and upend the stability of the Western World he must go full against the plotters as well as continuing to track down the Wolf.
Gil takes on hosts of enemy soldiers in his way, and in Herculean fashion destroys them one after the other. While exciting and filled with details of military weapons and one too many actions the number of encounters with armed and deadly troops stretches the imagination more than a little. The idea is to enjoy the book with the expectation of reading about the exploits of a super hero and his overcoming all obstacles thrown in his path; one after the other with no letup.
The book is pure entertainment and must be read as one would to enjoy the exploits of larger than life superheroes that bear little resemblance to us mortals. Doing it this way makes the read very enjoyable and becomes entertainment without having to decipher any devious plots.

If the reader enjoys a non-stop action-packed novel, then this one is for you. From the opening to the closing pages Master Chief Gil Shannon, the Navy Seal, is shooting, lobbing grenades and otherwise destroying hundreds of Chechens in his quest to encounter “the Wolf,” Sasha Kovalenko, apparently his equal (or superior) as a sniper, and Dokka Umarov, the so-called emir of the Chechen emirate, bent on destroying a pipeline running south from the Ukraine through Turkey which would imperil Western economies.
At the same time, the novel encompasses a plot by malcontents to seize control of the CIA, which of course leads to activity in Washington, Mexico and Cuba, where the insurgents meet with violence at the hands of another agent named Crosswhite. The story brings together elements of high politics (Shannon actually has lunch with President Putin), diplomacy (State Departments, foreign offices, various ambassadors), military logistics, intelligence and terrorists.
If the reader has the stomach for all the violence and killing, then this novel meets all the necessary qualifications. It is non-stop action and black ops of a high order. While it does give insight into the methods and techniques of Navy Seal snipers, the question is whether the reader can absorb it all. Certainly if it is to one’s taste, this is an excellently portrayed, exciting thriller, and is recommended on that basis.

In The Sniper and The Wolf, Gil Shannon returns with a surprise ally in order to thwart a terrorist plot. As in his previous books, Shannon is up against terrorists about to harm the world. In this instance, the threat is against the US economy.
Although not particularly a fan of war books or movies, I did find this to be an enjoyable read, even though at times I found myself completely baffled. Then again, I'm not up to date on all the war/army related agencies. Scott definitely knows his stuff. I don't think anyone will come away disappointed.

As with Mr. McEwen's previous books The Sniper and the Wolf is a well-written, thrilling page-turner, technically accurate and totally absorbing. If this is your first exposure to retired Navy SEAL Master Chief Gil Shannon, read the first two books in the Sniper Elite series, One Way Trip and Target America, to see how Shannon got to the point in his life he finds himself in;.

behind the scenes in Washington, are also written incredibly believable.
This is the third book in an outstanding series. One does not have had to read the pre sequels to enjoy this story. The characterization and intensive details go beyond the last books. In this world of military operations, the violence is described with brutal intensity. The authors reveal some of the objectivity needed by those willing to defend this country
Navy Seal sniper Gil Shannon teams up with a deadly Russian special operative Dragunov, a Spetsnaz commander to stop global terrorist plot of destruction by Chechen terrorists. But first they must take out the Russian sniper Kovalenko, who is hunting them. He is ex Spetsnaz, and his skills are equal or maybe better than Shannon’s.
There are other incongruous groups working together that are part of the plot. The CIA is working with the GRU, to stall ex CIA agents and an ex chief of staff from participating in the disruption of the world economy.
The Sniper and The Wolf is a brilliant page-turner. The plot and characters never stop moving forward. The subplots add to the suspense with descriptions of behind the scenes action.
