Great, quick read - as a follower of Force12, St. Martins, and the SOFREP crew, Irving's book is fun and lives up to his reputation. Don't get this if you're expecting technical / tactical knowledge - while it does encompass some training aspects of the Rangers/SOF, etc., The Reaper is the story of him; how and why Irving became what he is/was.

Just finished this book. Once I got started I was unable to put it down. The writer takes you through the whole gambit of emotions. He uses description to entice the reader to visualize his missions. I highly recommend the book and the author.

Well written story of the experiences of Nicholas Irving, a US Army Ranger. He served as a Sniper in Afghanistan. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in our military, and what they go through.
The Sniper and the Wolf: A Sniper Elite Novel :: A Bob Lee Swagger Novel (Bob Lee Swagger Novels Book 6) :: and Renewal - American Wife - A Memoir of Love :: Memoirs of an American Soldier - I Am a SEAL Team Six Warrior :: Jack Hinson's One-Man War, A Civil War Sniper

The author was not as entertaining as other sniper books that I have read. I found the entire book boring. While he was credited with 33 kills, he only writes about a few which actually came during combat.

These books help us gain a better understanding on not just the death side of war but the mental side of what our soldiers go through .This book took me through the whole gamma of emotions..great book!!

What an incredible read. In the best way possible, the Reaper himself, described his life and routine as an Army Ranger Sniper. All the great of and bad that come with that before, during, and after deployment. This seemed real and not embellished. I'm glad I can see what's been going on in the middle east with our country's men through books like this. It helps me appreciate more the freedoms I enjoy.
Thank you Nicholas Irving.

A very well written book, the stories are interesting and told in a way you stay curious to know what is going to happen next (even being a real story sometimes it surprises you with unusual situations).

Well written truly honors the heroes of our day. We have heard about the greatest generation, I include these men and women in that statement! You must remember the draft ended during the Viet Nam days, yet these Americans rose to the call. They have run to the sound of gun fire. Worth the time...

Mostly a stream of consciousness writing style from an obviously untrained and inexperienced author. However, it reads well and I have trouble putting it down once I started. Some grim and graphic perspectives on what it is like to get caught in the middle of war.

Author relates his story so that one sees him as 'one of the guys' but includes too much time with interpersonal conversations in an attempt to make that point repeatedly. Plan to scan lots of that content in order to get to the information about how he did his job.

An interesting tale of a sniper in modern day combat. On occasion the author wanders off from the story much like an old man who forgot what he was talking about. You have to pause and say how did we get to this topic from climbing over a wall? Nonetheless it was a good accounting of what our military is going thru and the difficulties of fighting an enemy that is not an organized army in uniform as in prior conflicts. This is the way wars are now and will be in the future fought. You don't know who wants to kill you. However it seems most everyone wants to do you in. Our politicians don't seem to get it and impose unrealistic rules of engagement that really at the least impair our troops ability to fight and at worst cost our troops injury and death. This is a good read.

Another great memoir written by another great hero/role model for us. I first discovered Nick on the SOFREP Ranger production a couple years back & have been following him ever since. He has articles both on SOFREP & The Loadout Room to check out.

5 star definitely,The story started out fast and it was also great for Nicholas to share his upbringing before joining the army.He seem such a down to earth professional as most men are in the elite units of the Armed forces.Brought out also what men go through to fight for and serve in this great military that we have.

As a Chaplain I appreciated all of the raw emotions that were described in this book. I read this book in one day and felt like I was out there on deployment with the Rangers. I literally had to snap myself out of it when I finished reading. I would recommend this book for any combat veteran or anyone who is just a military historian/enthusiast period.

It was good but not as fulfilling as American Sniper. It seemed long drawn out episodes and thoughts.
Maybe seeing the American Sniper movie inspired me more in the reading. So they could be both equally good.
