Stephen Hunter keeps churning them out and I keep loving them. With the increased reliance on snipers in our current efforts in Afghanistan, it's extremely interesting to get into the head of even a fictional sniper.

Excellent novel with plenty of authentic detail, prose and action. I've heard that some of Hunter's novels are formulaic. I don't think this is one! I'm a demanding reader and this one delivered, with a bullet.

I have really enjoyed the Bob Lee Swagger series, as well as several others of Hunter's work. This book is a success in the "mindless read, go ahead and shoot 'em up" perspective. Other than that, it felt a little too "connect the dots" without quite enough coherence. I more than once felt that there was a goal involved (crank out a book) and then a start and beginning were decided, a few decent scenes constructed... and the rest was just kind of pieced together.

The "good guys" vs. "Liberal Media" started to feel a little hamhanded after awhile as well. It felt like Hunter approached a lot of Black and White hotbutton issues and tried to just invert the colors, rather than try to explore the greys that'd make the reader think. Either you'll agree wholeheartedly with the perspectives explored, or disagree violently- but I felt that could have been a lot more subtle morality that could have been explored.

Overall, I read it cover to cover in a few days- but I don't expect to fondly recall this one as I do some of his other books.

Re: Kindle Version: The Font seemed a little 'big' and wouldn't resize as I expected- except for some block quotes or headlines, which were rendered ridiculously tinily. Something doesn't seem quite right in the current format.

The letter agencies never worked so well together as long as they don't show their cards and have secret agendas. Swagger always cuts to the quick and he does it again. Cruz is great and hopefully we see more of him in the future.

I've always loved Stephen Hunters books. Earl Swaggard is a great "American" hero. The story line is kind of cool because it's kinda mirrors true life celebrities but takes them to the extreme. I highly recommend all Stephen Hunter's books.

I have always enjoyed Bob Lee Swagger stories and I was not disappointed by this yarn. A great book.
This was my first kindle book. I read it on both my iPad and my PC. I still like a paper book but am more willing to try more eBooks now.

Very entertaining; a man's literature!
Tough and believable. Being a veteran of the armed forces, and having worked undercover for and with 4 different govmnt agencies, I can relate to Bob Lee and his exploits.

Like many other reviews, I should point out that I read some of Mr. Hunters earlier work and was very disappointed. I was leery of this purchase. However, I enjoyed the movie " Sniper" very much. So I decided to give it a try. I was very pleased. Again though, like others I felt there was to much time spent on the types of guns and ammo for my taste. However, in the context of this book it did have a certain importance. For those who are into guns, this was probably what they found best about it. Overall, I found the book entertaining and if not spellbinding, exciting. I will continue to read the series only not as quickly as other less expensive ones. Were I not a senior citizen on a fixed income I would buy them all and read them in what the "streaming world of TV " is called slamming.

I greatly enjoyed most of Hunters early books and found some of the later ones not so satisfying. The reviews I saw on this book caused me to wait quite a while before finally buying.

Much of the criticism is so-so valid, the book is more than a little ham-handed, so why did I like it so much? It occurs to me that I have gotten used to the little shots so many writers take at republicans, conservatives, anyone on the right. It is pervasive throughout Hollywood and the publishing world, with a few obvious exceptions. Here were a few sneering, insulting in-your-faces thrown at the lefts leading 60s-80s heroes. WOW, I winced a little, but there seemed a small degree of equity bound up in these 'shots'. And really, which is more true to life, the incessant storyline of bankers or pharmaceutical bosses, powerplant developers or builders-in-general involved in the most dastardly vicious murder and cover-up plots or radical leftists engaged in domestic terrorism and the occasional bank robbery? On the one hand, a republican leaning villain or a series of gratuitous insults tossed at various causes on the right seem to relate to higher likelihoods of being published whereas any shot at the left will be quietly tsk, tsk'd and followed by a smack of the ruler.

Anyway, I enjoyed the book, the oddly verbose Irish were the subject of some very pertinent political/military tangents, the bureaucratic bludgeoning process described was interesting and the Post/Times comeuppance was a pleasure. This had much of the feel and appeal of Hunter's 'Pale Horse' but with about 250,000 excess words edited out. I gave it a 4 star rating but maybe 4 1/2 would be more accurate. If you liked Swagger but lost some interest when he went west, try this, you'll enjoy it.

I bought this on impulse (Kindle version) and I'm glad I did. As a long time fan of Stephen Hunter and Bob Lee Swagger, I was looking forward to a good yarn with amazing near-impossible shots, formidable bad guys and good plot turns and surprises. I was not disappointed. Having been in the long range shooting community for nearly 2 decades, I am familiar with many of the characters that are mentioned, and on the whole they and their systems are presented accurately.

I know it is very difficult to constantly top your best work and come up with fresh and new plot twists; "Point of Impact" remains one of my favorite books and the movie made from it, "Shooter" is also a very good translation from the book to the screen. With "I, Sniper", Mr. Hunter has achieved an entertaining and mostly intriguing story. Bob Lee's Swagger's resourcefulness and determination continue to entertain.

I read about this book in American Rifleman. The text was friendly; the plot was engaging; the action was credible. I suspect Mr. Hunter will probably be released from his NY Times job if this book gets the recognition it deserves, and Mayor Bloomberg becomes aware that a dangerous book like this one was developed in his city. But a writer like Mr. Hunter should prevail, as does horse sense, on occasion. I look forward to more of Mr. Hunter.

Bob Swagger is back this time trying to clear the name of a famed war hero Carl Hitchcock for his 93 kills as sniper in Vietnam (based on the real life exploits of the late Carlos Hathcock)who was accused of killing four well known 60s anti war lefties with one of them based on Hanoi Jane Fonda herself. This book is good read from start to finish with the nailer back at what he does best dispensing justice with his Remington 700 no samurai swords here.

The overall storyline kept me from abandoning this book. More than once I skipped page after page of detail - of a weapons description, a torture scenario, landscape descriptions, etc. Someone in the sniper world would probably enjoy and understand the detail. I did not.
