Good book overall. Fair amount of detail about what it takes to get into the Navy Seals and eventually, Seal Team Six. There are several personal narratives about combat missions in Somalia and such and interactions with other elite special ops (Delta Force and Australian SAS).

My students don't always speak in a correct manner (I'm working on that in the classroom) but they are brutally honest with me. A few weeks ago, I came across this book while looking for something that would appeal to male students (all former dropouts) in an alternative school setting. The book has not only grabbed and held the attention of these students but many more are asking for a copy to read. One student told me he hasn't read or touched a book in 4 years but enjoyed reading about Howard's life. Many have expressed how they could relate to his earlier experiences while growing up which makes it extra special to them. In addition, I located a study guide that goes with this book that enhances the learning for these young men. Though I haven't haven't read this book from cover to cover (I'm writing my own book) the students told me to give it 5 stars!

Many aspects of this book were absolutely fascinating. I enjoyed (in a better-you-than-me-but-holy-cow-that's-impressive kind of way) reading about all the training that Howard went through, from joining the Navy through becoming a SEAL and then later a sniper. Learning some of the history of the SEALs was neat too. Seeing the events of the movie Black Hawk Down (yes, I'm sure the book was better and more accurate--I'm planning on reading it too--soon) from another perspective was really interesting as well. And I just can't get past the fact that the author met Rudy from Survivor; I had no idea that Rudy Boesch was such a well-known individual in the military world. I shared quite a bit of this book with others while I was reading it; I just couldn't help myself. There were many times that I didn't want to put this book down, and I'd already purchased a print copy for my classroom library before I was even halfway done with my digital one.
The authors did a decent job of taking what must be a challenging adult book and making it more accessible to a younger audience. At times narrative transitions were less than smooth, because it appeared that a larger chunk of information must have been pared out of this version. The end result was a bit of choppiness in the tale, but overall it doesn't really detract from the narrative. I think readers from middle school on up can find a lot to relate to in many parts of this memoir, and in fact I have read parts of it out loud to my classes already. If the grown up version happened to cross my path, I definitely wouldn't be adverse to reading it as well.

A memoir that gives us an overview of Howard Wasdin childhood, his entry into the Navy and the events that lead him too become a U.S. Navy SEAL. The book has a very brief overview of his life before joining the SEALs and his life after leaving the Navy. The main narrative focused on his time in the Navy outlining his various training assignments, a few missions but mainly the book goes into depth on his involvement in the Battle of Mogadishu. The main operation which most people will know from the book and/or movie 'Black Hawk Down' is shown through his eyes; a member of SEAL Team Six and a Special Forces sniper.
It does not glorify combat and shows the horrific cost too both sides in a conflict. His accounts are straight forward and should help anyone realize what the military Special Forces do for their country. He also shares his mental state as a successful SEAL member, too being wounded several times in the battle and finally the stress of being home and separated from the close knit support one gets use too being a member of a specialized unit. This book has been adapted for young readers and I would suggest for any adult who wishes too read this book to find the adult version.

this book is simply incredibly (sorry im still looking for a better word to describe) fabouesly fascinating and wonderfully written, definetly one of them best military books out there, the book is basically about how Howard (the author) overcomes a rough childhood to fullfill his dreams of becoming a elite sniper for seal team six this book also shows us that nothing should hold us back from completing are dreams, anyway Howard is later found in the battle of Mogadishu which is supposed to take a quick half hour but takes a whole lot longer, after the battle he struggles with stress and depression and even has suicidle thoughts,( now dont get me wrong he is a great man but the stress from war isnt fun )later he learns to get over his depression and to think about his future which makes him become a fabouleous chiropractor. overall he has put his life to great use first helping america in the military then later helping patients. we should be like him and serve our country in whatever ways we can. (off topic: to learn more about the brave men who risked thier lives in the battle of mogadishue watch "Black Hawk Down" by ridley scott) finally God bless brave people like howard wasdin who risk thier lives for our country. GOD BLESS

I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
I think this is a tough subject to translate into a YA book, and I think the authors did a decent job of doing so. The difficulty of paring down the text to a simpler version for the younger audience showed sometimes in disjointed paragraphs as they moved quickly from one event to another with little transition, however the story did keep me interested and Howard E. Wasdin is a man to be admired for his service to this country. I'm glad that he included background on his childhood and his military training before we learn the details of his overseas service as it added to the reader's understanding of his character and special skills. I also like that he addresses life post-war and doesn't shy away from the effects the battles had on him without undermining or disrespecting the military. In all I would say that younger readership, particularly boys, could be pulled into reading with subjects such as these, although the graphic and adult nature of some of the topics necessitate that parents be conscious of their child's reaction to the story and discuss it with them

All this book is, is a shortened, condensed version of Wasdin's book "Seal Team 6" that has been written down to about a 6th grade level. I purchased Seal Team 6 and absolutely loved it......pre-ordered this thinking it would be a "further adventures of....." type book, but all it turned out to be is an easy reading version of Seal Team 6. Don't waste your money on this....it is a total disappointment. "Seal Team 6" was great and I do recommend that the extra money be spent and get the full length book. I tried to rate this ZERO stars, but it wouldn't let me, so I had to give it one star, but this book is not worthy of it.

I bought this book at the Scholastic Book Fair. It's very good, and tells all that a SEAL has to go through--similar to what I've read before--but I would NOT recommend this book for kids, due to all the swear words. I know someone will say that kids read (and hear) these words all the time, but--it's not right. I am reviewing this book, but am going to quit; I have only gotten a little ways and my page is filling up with plenty of "hells."
The story so far is good--the author lets us know how extremely physically fit he was--although several men are coldly killed in the first pages. I expected more out of the book, being a Scholastic book intended for kids--but I was disappointed.

What another reviewer said is incorrect. It's not written "down." It's shorter and condensed, but has the full story and all of the impact of the original version, a deserved bestseller. Mr. Wasdin's story is fascinating. Highly recommended.
(For some reason there's no "Verified Purchase" label, but it was.)
